2 NCS Speakers The first guest speakers of the year for the Sixth Form assembly were NCS and they advocated a change to your future by students coming onto the NCS programme during this October half term. In summary, the programme is based around 4 phases that include an outdoor adventure trip, a challenge, social action and finally a celebration event. The programme was neatly summarised as being for the (life) lessons they don t teach you in class and students were requested to submit an expression of interest form. We look forward to hearing about the exploits and life changing experiences our students have with this very popular venture. Mr Simmonds, Head of Sixth Form Supporting Mr Leonard & the Teenage Cancer Trust Throughout the summer I ve been running a number of 10K events and half marathons to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. To make it even more difficult for myself I ve done them all dressed as Gandalf! My last race of the year will be the Birmingham half marathon on Sunday 15 October. It would be great if anyone is available to come down to Birmingham and cheer me on, you certainly won t miss me go by! 4 AUTUMN TERM: SPORTS UPDATE This term has been a busy one for the PE Department as most of our teams have started their competitive seasons! Read on to find out how we ve been getting on: Year 9 Netball (Mrs Ballance) Wolgarston v Codsall High: Earlier this term we invited Codsall High School over for some friendly fixtures. They brought over two Year 9 teams to play us in some well contested games. Both games were won by Wolgarston with Pheobe Cope, Danielle Simpson and Lily Pedley receiving player of the match awards. Wolgarston v South Staffs Rural Enterprise: We mixed up our squad for this game with Rodbaston as we knew we would be the stronger team. It was interesting to see players coping with the challenge of playing out of position however it remained a convincing win for the team. Beth Campbell and Kirsty Hughes were player of the match award winners. We have a super squad of netballers in Year 9 this year and regularly have players training each week at Tuesday night practices. Year 10 Netball (Mrs Stanton) Wolgarston v St Dominics Grammar School: Our first game as Year 10 didn t go quite as we had hoped with us losing 9-8 in a very close game. A few more practices under our belts would have helped us but a good performance none the less, with Niamh Callaghan receiving player of the match. Wolgarston v Codsall High School: Another defeat this time against our local rivals Codsall. In this game our slow start punished us, as although we made an excellent attempt at a comeback, we ran out of time before we could catch Codsall s score. Player of the match: Ruby Turner. Year 11 Netball (Mrs Stanton) Wolgarston v Codsall High School: We were well and truly beaten in this game away at Codsall High. Unfortunately, we didn t perform well and were beaten to the ball all over court. A tough lesson for us although we were missing three key players. Player of the match: Charlotte Harrison. Sixth Form Netball (Mrs Stanton) Wolgarston v Stafford College: After what seemed like the longest break ever, our Sixth Form Netball Team began their season in the AOC West Midlands Netball League. After such an excellent performance last year and a 2 nd place finish in the league we were promoted to Division 2.

5 Year 9 Football (Mrs Stanton) Our new year 9s were straight into action this term in their English Schools Competition versus Charlton School in Telford. For many girls this was their first experience of playing in a full 11 aside football match, and in tough conditions they represented us very well. Sadly we were beaten by a more experienced team. Player of the match: Ella Milner. Year 11 Football The Year 11 Lads kick off their season away to Charlton School on Monday 16 October in the English Schools Cup. We are hopeful of another successful season, hopefully building on a very strong Year 9 & Year 10. Please see the next SNU for a full report. Sixth Form Football On Wednesday 4 October we kicked off our AoC Colleges fixtures with a tough hope game V Redditch. Unfortunately we lost 4-0 but we showed lots of spirit and there were plenty of encouraging signs. Oliver Butler was superb at centre back demonstrating outstanding leadership skills throughout the game. Club News Dance Club: Preparations have started early for this year s Wolgarston Dance Festival. This will be our 10 th year of hosting the show and we are expecting it to be the best yet! Thursday nights we have a dance club in our Dance Studio at a charge of 2 per week which is led by an external Dance Teacher. All are welcome to attend! Notable Achievements This Term County Cricket Trials: A number of our girls were selected to attend County Cricket trials this half term, and are currently awaiting the news as to whether they have made it through to represent Staffordshire. Good luck to Libby Price, Lexi Pope and Kirsty Hughes, all in Year 9. Netball Talent: Well done to Ruby Turner who has made it through a tough selection process to be selected as part of the Wasps Netball U19 Squad. She now joins her talented sister Annie Turner in this high performing team. Congratulations Ruby!! Lawley moves to Birmingham City: Gemma Lawley in Year 10 has made a move over the Summer holidays to Birmingham City Ladies U16 RTC. This is a step up for Gemma who will now play in the top tier of women s football at this age group and as a result has had to step up her training regime. Good luck for the season Gemma!! County Football Call Ups! Congratulations to all of our students who have been selected to represent Stafford Schools Football Association this year- this is a fantastic achievement; we are very proud. U15 Boys- Josh Milner & Callum Carter U16 Boys- Sam Edmunds & Alex Hallchurch U16 Girls- Gemma Lawley & Macey Turvey District Cross Country Championships: If there are any students who would like to represent the school at the upcoming District Cross Country Championships, please see a member of the PE Department ASAP.

6 St Georges Park On Monday 9 October, 24 students travelled to St Georges Park to help mark the 5 th anniversary of its opening. Throughout the course of the day we were one of very few schools asked to participate in a five hour 5-a-side football match. It was a fantastic occasion and students got to have a good look around the world class facilities on offer as well as participating in the football match. 13 CALLING ALL STALL HOLDERS! Stall holders are needed to be a part of this year s Codsall Christmas Fair on Friday 1 December. This great community event is back this year bigger and better and they are aiming for nearly double the amount of stalls! Last year s turnout of 3,000 people is expected to be topped this year, making Codsall Christmas Fair the place to be.
