Where in the World was Colin McLunkie? Part 1 On Colin s travels, Captain Cook took him to some of the Commonwealth countries as the British Empire colonised them. Can you draw a line showing the journey they took from Great Britain and onwards to the rest of the colonies? The first leg of the trip has been done for you. In the play Captain Cook travelled through: South Africa, Canada, The Cook Islands, New Zealand and Australia Part 2 As time went on Queen Victoria commanded that more of the world should be under British Rule, until the point when the sun never set on her Empire. Locate the countries, Continents and areas that were colonised by the British and highlight them. You may need to use an atlas or world map to help you. At its peak this included: Cyprus Gibraltar Ionian Islands India Malta Burma Hong Kong Gold Coast East Africa Singapore British Cameroons Mauritius Nigeria Sierra Leone South Africa Barbados The Bahamas Canada Cayman Islands Bermuda Cook Islands Jamaica Newfoundland Fiji Australia New Zealand 4

A Commonwealth Holiday In the 18 th Century Captain Cook s first voyage lasted around three years, sailing around the world claiming each new place for Great Britain. In this time he only visited around eight countries or islands. Travelling by boat it would take weeks, or sometimes months, to travel from country to country. For the modern Games athletes, VIP s and spectators from all of these places travel to the host country, generally only taking a matter of hours in an aeroplane. Children may need access to the internet, world maps or holiday brochures to fully benefit from the following learning experiences. 6

A Commonwealth Holiday: 16 th Century (Part 1) During the 15 th Century a variety of European countries such as Spain and Portugal embarked upon voyages and expeditions around the world. This is known as the Age of Discovery, and it was around this time that America was discovered by the Spanish and colonies were introduced around Africa and South America. While the Europeans were all building their empires around the globe, England and Scotland were trying to come to some agreement about uniting their kingdoms. Around this time Elizabeth I sent out exploration voyages to discover something for, what was soon to be, Great Britain. Imagine you are Humphrey Gilbert, a young Member of Parliament and adventurer. Write a letter to the Queen explaining why you believe that she should choose you as Lead Explorer on this mission. You may wish to mention: Previous adventures you have been on? Why you think it is important to have an empire? What qualities make you a good choice? 7

A Commonwealth Holiday: 16 th Century (Part 2) Gilbert set sail in 1584, he landed on Newfoundland, but on the return journey he fell ill and his half-brother Sir Walter Raleigh took over from him (although he wasn t knighted until he got home). Around this time the first newspapers were being printed and sold around Europe. Create an article that tells the story of Humphrey Gilbert s journey, and how Walter Raleigh came to be the one sailing home a year later. Consider: What information does the reader need to know? What facts do you have? Is there any uncertainty in the story? Upon his return Walter Raleigh was knighted and sent on another voyage, this time to discover new lands of his own. In pairs, carry out an interview with Sir Walter Raleigh. Come up with a few questions to start the interview and then allow the conversation to flow naturally. You may want to ask about: 8 What he misses most when he s away? The most amazing thing he has seen? Sir Walter s visit to the palace?

A Commonwealth Holiday: 2014 Most of the Commonwealth countries send representatives to the Games every four years. 70 of these countries will be coming to Glasgow in Focusing on these four countries: 1) Who will travel the furthest in 2014? 2) Who has the longest journey time (including landing in other countries on the way)? 3) Who has the most expensive journey per athlete? Use the internet or holiday brochures to research your answers. Were you surprised by any? Fill in this table to show your findings. India Jamaica Malaysia Distance Time of journey Cost of journey (approx.) Nigeria 9

A Commonwealth Timeline: First Level Since the very first voyages of the British Empire set sail a lot has changed in the world, but for the Commonwealth most of it occurred in the 20 th Century. First: Sort the important events in the order you think they happened. Second: Match the dates to the events and write them into the timeline. Second: Check with a partner to see if you agree on the order. Third: Research the dates or check them with your teacher The British Empire Games first held Glasgow hosts the Games 10

A Commonwealth Timeline: Second Level In between the first voyages of the British Empire and 2014 a lot has happened, but for the Commonwealth most of it occurred in the 20 th Century. First: Sort the important events in the order you think they happened. Second: Match the dates to the events and write them into the timeline. Second: Check with a partner to see if you agree on the order. Third: Research the dates or check them with your teacher The British Empire Games first held Glasgow hosts the Games 11

A Sporting Chance In 2014 seventeen different sports will take place over 11 days in Glasgow. The organisers have been hard at work preparing all the venues and equipment for the events. This Planning Card shows where the Badminton events are taking place, what is required for the sport and suggests a logo to be used. 16 Old Sport: First Level Many colonists took sport with them when they travelled to new countries around the Empire, however, they didn t all start out looking like the sports we know today. Which of the Commonwealth sports do you think match the histories below? The first one has been done for you. 19 th Century Following the success of basketball, a separate outdoors game was adapted for an all-female class at a Physical Training college in England. Netball 19 th Century British Army Officers set a row of books across a table and hit a golf ball over the barrier using books as racquets. 19 th Century Adapted from battledore and shuttlecock this game was known as Poona before strict rules were set out and it was named after a country house in England. 19 th Century Coming from the opening of another sport, this was used by gymnasts in Germany to show off more interesting and fancy skills with a softer landing. Aquatics Athletics Badminton Boxing Cycling Gymnastics Hockey Sports Judo Lawn bowls Netball Rugby Sevens Shooting Squash Table Tennis Triathlon Weightlifting Wrestling These histories are all either proven to be true or are the most likely explanations taken from history books. But can you make up a history for any of the remaining sports? 16

Old Sport: Second Level Many of the sports that take place during the games were taken from Great Britain by colonists around the Empire, but they didn t all start out looking like the sports we know today. Which of the Commonwealth sports do you think match the histories below? 13 th Century The game of jactus lapidum involved iron stones being thrown in the manner of the shot put. Competitors were aiming to land their stones closest to a small cone. 19 th 20 th Century Based on control and efficiency with minimum effort, this Japanese sport borrows much from a similar sport, although focusing more on the philosophy rather than the display. 16 th 18 th Century After a book on physical exercise as a means to stay healthy was published in the 16 th century, a variety of educationalists built on the foundations to include a large variety of techniques using a range of equipment to display skill. 19 th Century Coming from the opening of another sport, this was used by gymnasts in Germany to show off more interesting and fancy skills with a softer landing. 19 th Century British Army Officers set a row of books across a table and hit a golf ball over the barrier using books as racquets. 1 st 13 th Century Different versions of this game appear from ancient Greece, Rome and China, but generally involve a small leather ball being thrown or kicked at some kind of target or hole. These histories are all either proven to be true or are the most likely explanations taken from history books. But can you make up a history for any of the other sports? 17

Be a Good Sport During the show Colin crosses paths with different people and rarely agrees with anyone! Think about each situation that cropped up and discuss a more positive way for Colin to deal with the situation, without just running away! 18

Take Your Seats: Early Level The Commonwealth Planning Council has announced that all of the stadiums must have the same kind of benches for the audience to sit in when they re watching the games. They have asked your class to use construction materials to make a model of these benches and they must: 1) Have enough room for three people each to sit on them. 2) Be bright and colourful. 3) Be able to be carried easily. This is the size of person that should be able to fit on your model bench. 19

Take Your Seats: First Level The Commonwealth Planning Council has announced that all of the stadiums must have the same kind of bleachers for the audience to sit in when they re watching the games. Bleachers are rows of raised benches that are accessed by a set of stairs. They have asked your class to use construction materials to make a model of these bleachers with these specifications: 1) Each bench must hold ten people. 2) There must be at least three rows of benches. 3) There must be a set of stairs at either side of the benches. This is the size of person that should be able to fit on your model bench. 20

Take Your Seats: Second Level The Commonwealth Planning Council has announced that all of the stadiums must have the same kind of bleachers for the audience to sit in when they re watching the games. Bleachers are rows of raised benches that are accessed by a set of stairs. They have asked your class to design and create a scale model of these bleachers with these specifications: 1) Each bench must hold at least eight people (assuming that one person will take up 50cm of space). 2) Each set of bleachers must hold at least 100 people. 3) There must be a set of stairs at either side of the benches. 21

I have developed my mental map and sense of place. I have extended my mental map and sense of place and can interpret information from different types of maps and am beginning to locate key features within the wider world. I can contribute to a discussion on the influence of an individual from history s actions, then and since. I can discuss why people and events from a particular time in the past were important, placing them within a historical sequence. Having explored the ways journeys can be made, I can consider the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of transport. I can compare and contrast a society in the past with my own and contribute to a discussion of the similarities and differences. I can interpret historical evidence from a range of periods to help to build a picture of Scotland s heritage and my sense of chronology. HWB 2-26a I know that we all experience a variety of thoughts and emotions that affect how we feel and behave and I am learning ways of managing them. Through contributing my views, time and talents, I can play a part in bringing about positive change. During practical activities and design challenges, I can estimate and measure using appropriate instruments and units. Through discovery and imagination, I can develop and use problem-solving strategies to construct models. HWB 0/1/2-02a HWB 0/1/2-13a TCH 1/2-13a TCH 1/2-14a 22
