1 CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL 6 MARCH 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER WORLD BOOK DAY All boys throughout the school took part in a wide variety of exciting actvities in order to celebrate our Book Week and World Book Day. The book theme has been reflected in our English lessons where Year 6, 7 and 8 boys have been busy writing their 500 word stories for the famous BBC Radio 2 Competition endorsed by many celebrities in order to encourage children to Get Reading, get writing and get inspired! The boys have written unique and exciting stories and some of these can be seen on display throughout the school. World Book Day allowed us to invite the boys to transform into an interesting array of characters from their chosen books. Pupils demonstrated fantastic characterisation as they presented themselves to the rest of the class. Donations were made to Book Aid International. The book fair was, as always, successfully managed by Amanthi Tollit and it was a great opportunity for boys to purchase books throughout the week. Many thanks to Amanthi and her team for their hard work and dedication. 3 THE U11s FINISH JOINT 3RD IN THE COUNTRY AT THE RUGBY NATIONAL FESTIVAL AT EPSOM COLLEGE On Sunday 1 March 2015, the U11s headed to Epsom College to compete for the title of National Champions.

3 3 THE U11s FINISH JOINT 3RD IN THE COUNTRY AT THE RUGBY NATIONAL FESTIVAL AT EPSOM COLLEGE On Sunday 1 March 2015, the U11s headed to Epsom College to compete for the title of National Champions. The day started well with a confident win over Heath Mount who tested Cumnor throughout the game. The second test was against the unbeaten Winchester House School who had just come off from beating Donhead by three tries to nil. It was a physical game and WHS were smarter around the break down, stealing the ball at every opportunity. WHS took the lead very quickly using slick hands to score in the corner. Cumnor scored a consolation try in the last minute where William Bonsu picked at the base of the ruck and smashed through the defence to go the length and score. The last group game was against Donhead who had originally beaten Cumnor in a previous fixture. The U11s needed to win well to secure a place in the Cup competition alongside WHS. This game was a dominant display by Cumnor House scoring eight tries throughout the game and not conceding a single point. Cumnor went through to the Cup Quarter-Final, facing Queen Elizabeth Grammar School who had topped their group going unbeaten so far in the tournament. This was a fantastic display of Rugby with both teams using the ball well in space and both teams being physical at the break down. At half time, Cumnor were one try down and had to play up the hill. The Cumnor forwards dominated up front carrying hard and making yards each time. This pressure resulted in a try from Daniel Ikezue-Clifford with 2 minutes to play. After numerous penalties Callum Murray, was sharp to react and tapped quickly to go over in the corner and win the game. An outstanding performance, which sent Cumnor House through to the Semi-Final against Shrewsbury House School. This game again was very physical and SHS were brilliant at the breakdown. Although Cumnor had the ball for the majority of the game many of the boys were running sideways or into a defender. SHS scored two quality tries around the edge of our defence and Cumnor were only able to score one try through the Captain Kyle Debrah. Unfortunately, SHS were too strong for Cumnor and it was the end of the day for the U11s. The U11A team should be very proud of their successful season, finishing joint third in the country. The only teams to beat Cumnor at Nationals were in the Cup Final finishing first and second in the country. An outstanding way to top off the season and we now look forward to the upcoming 7s tournaments. Mr Gray

4 2T ASSEMBLY On Monday 2T presented their assembly about Bucket Filling! The boys explained about how everybody in the whole wide world walks around carrying an invisible bucket.

The boys thought of ways to help fill buckets: telling your mum and dad that you love them; saying Hello! to the bus driver; remembering please and thank you; or even giving someone a smile.

These buckets have one purpose to hold your good thoughts and good feelings about yourself. However, you need other people to fill your bucket by saying or doing kind things. The boys thought of ways to help fill buckets: telling your mum and dad that you love them; saying Hello! to the bus driver; remembering please and thank you; or even giving someone a smile. The boys finished off by singing Happiness is something if you give it away. They spoke clearly and sincerely well done, 2T! Now go and fill those buckets! Mrs Parker-Brown ARUN OELKERS - SWIMMING COUNTY CHAMPION! Over the last three weekends I have been competing in the Surrey County Championships, this is the highest level I can swim at till I'm 11. I had to qualify with the 11 year olds, so did not expect much success, but went to swim my best and set a couple of personal bests. However, when the competition began, I discovered that I would be competing with the 10 year olds, so had a chance. The first weekend, I set 5 PB's in my 5 races, getting a Ribbon for 4th in the 200m free style, which was followed with Bronze in the 100m, then 3 Silvers in the 100m free style, back and butterfly. I qualified with a time of 1.42 and swam 1.29 in the final. The 3rd weekend I only had one race, I turned up on the day with a bad hand, having convinced the doctors at the hospital 2 days earlier that I would be ok to swim. Despite the pain and only being able to get out of the pool with one hand I became Surrey County Champion at 200m butterfly. The pain did not get better and I could not use my thumb and following another hospital visit I arrived at Crystal Palace for the 50m races. I couldn't warm up in the pool because of the pain, all I could do was race, I swam a solid race to qualify fastest for the final. When I got out I was shaking with the pain, my dad and others wanted to pull me out of the final, but after I agreed to pull out of the rest of the Championships, it was agreed I could be given to the last minute. I told everyone I was ok and could do it and that I had worked all year for this, and it was worth it, I went on to win the Gold to become a double county champion. Also despite not doing more races I received another Bronze as I came 3rd in my age group for the whole of Surrey. Arun Oelkers 5V
