The rock that Wests perished on was Johnny Green. At centre half-back he was best for the Magpies. He never once gave his opponent a chance, with straight ahead football. Captain Ray Moore eclipsed his viv-a-vis at centre and was an inspiration to his team. He was never subdued and constantly drove the ball forward. Follower Len Thompson was once more a power of strength. He did most of the heavy work in the ruck, marked superbly and fought determinedly for the ball all day. "Lightweights" Cec Quilkey and Doug Baines were most active in their physical clashes with the opposition. They scouted well around the packs and seemed to be always in the play. Ken Longley gave a faultless display of solid defence at full-back. He saved repeatedly with timely marks and long distance kicking. Western Suburbs* best player was Bob Hall, who ran himself into the ground in his efforts to bolster a losing side. Time and again he drove the ball to the forwards, who were rarely able to capitalise on the opportunities provided. Defences on both sides dominated the game, and in this department high-flying Peter Kuschert, at centre half-back, and speedster Bob May, on the half-back flank, turned many Balmain attacks with sure handling and long clearing kicks. Of the remainder, Jack Chester deserves mention for always 'being in the thick of play, attempting to start constructive moves. It was regrettable that Captain George Hall was forced to leave the field in the third quarter with a recurrence of an old knee injury. St. George displayed brilliant form to down the Navy. Ken Fitz patrick, at centre half-back, gave another grand display and was well supported by Wal Atkinson, "Skipper" Keith Schow, Ray Jolliffe and Pat McGrane. Across the centre the Tigers had the Sailors well at sea. Wingers Peter Taylor and Allan Sigsworth turned in good games, while in the centre Terry Heenan was the sheet anchor with his coolness and sound marking. At centre half-forward Graham Richards gave his best game to date. Jack Courtney and Max Badens were two smart rovers, while Col Harris turned in yet another sound performance. Young Ian Rushton is worthy of special mention. This lad played in the early game and in replacing an injured player in the seniors more than held his own with his more experienced opponents. Against weak opposition, Easts took the opportunity to improve their already more than respectable percentage record and also gave signs of a return to top form. Players who contributed included Jack Dean, to whom no match is easy; Mai. Dean, sure in defence; Geoff Shone (eight goals); and Jerry Davidson (wing). Tony Buck had a run on the forward line in the last quarter and kicked his first and' what will probably be his last goal for the season. 3 3 all did their bit. Kevin Batchelor's display for the Southerners was a faultless exhibition of good fast football for the team, which at no stage was a match for the Bulldogs. His uncanny judgment and vigour to give Souths drive from a losing ruck were highlights of the game. Bruce Stubley (full-back) once again figures among the best players on the uay. Bruce had a battle royal with his doughty opponent, but proved himself as a player who never gives up. Stan Phillips was dependable in the back line and it was pleasing to see him give drive to the forwards with long distance kicks. Lionel Davies, Wal Speed and Don McEvoy (until injured) combined strong ground play with fine clearing from the back line. Top of the 'Town was Ossie Grose, who, with his fine positional play and understanding with the full-forward, Frank Finlay, was an object lesson to younger players. Between them they scored nine of the side's total of fourteen goals. Ron Grose also stood out for a serviceable game on the wing. The captain, Harry Free, marked and kicked in grand style and was well supported by brother Billy at centre half-back. Kev. Egan worked hard in the ruck and kicked two nice goats from the half-forward line. Seventeen year old Jimmy Brooks and nineteen year older, Bobby Walsh, roved in fine fashion. Sons of former Newtown players, they are proving a decided asset to the Red and Whites. Ruckman Ron Williams and Jack Armstrong (former Newtown players) gave brilliant displays for Liverpool against former team mates. The rovers, R. Nolan and N. Coppin, were quick to seize on the many opportunities offered and were often under notice for delightful play. W. Norquay (Tassie) and B. Sanders were smart forwards, who marked and kicked to perfection. A. Granna, D. Creek and T. Murphy were strong in defence and relieved with determination. The latter shows signs of developing into a star player. For the Northerners Bill McMahon at centre hall-back gave a dashing display of solid defence. Showing a good turn of speed and using driving drop kicks to position, he initiated many attacks. Lachie Thompson's five goals were well earned from excellent positional play and good overhead work. Jim Thomas again excelled at centre half-forward, where he worked well, and by his play-on tactics kept the forward zone open. Bill Hawkins appears to have regained the touch he showed early in the season. His backing up of the full-back were features of intelligent back pocket play. Others in a very even team to take the eye were Paul Josephson, Arch Pilling, Arthur Waghorn and Tom Giles. Once again Alan Dalton turned in a grand performance in the centre for Bankstown. Brilliant marking and ground play were features of his display. Whether rucking or iesting, Rhys Ghiddys made his presence felt. Leading out well and marking brilliantly he initiated many scoring moves. Back between the sticks a player who really made an impression was Pat Quinlan. His daring spoiling tactics and long range kicking placed him well to the fore. Noel Thompson again turned in his usual honest game, saving many a grave situation. Coach Johnny Quinn proved what a valuable asset he is on the half-forward flank. He plays the game as it should be played, and his kick for goal in the last term was a gem. Brilliant rover, Lou Hunt, once more turned on a grand performance, capping it off with three fine goals. Other players who stood out were Dick Hughes, Don Munro, Don Hickson and W. King. CONDOLENCE The deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Jack Clark, of Eastern Suburbs Club, in the recent death of his father, Jack, an old and respected member of the same club.

Pirak (Broken Hill) who withdrew on account of inability to secure leave of absence from work. Terrell is IS years of age, 5ft. 9in.. and weighs 12 stone. Me is displaying outstanding form and Mr. A. J. SNOW, President of the N.S.W.A.N.F.L. and delegate to the Australian National Football Council, who will precede' the N.S.W, team to Melbourne to attend the annual meeting of controlling body this week-end. \ is regarded as the No. 1 rover in the Silver City. It was reported that Mr. Alan Mclntyre, former umpire and recently appointed Umpire's Coach, had been admitted to Prince Alfred Hospital the previous Friday. Mr. Mclntyre had given the umpires instruction the previous evening at Erskineville Oval. All members and followers of the code will wish Alan a speedy return to good health. Mr. Fred Blencowe, Assistant Honorary Secretary of the League and junior stalwart, tendered his resignation, due to removing his place of residence to an outer suburb. The resignation was accepted with regret and a note of commendation was placed on the books in regard to the efficient manner in which Mr. Blencowe had discharged his duties. Mr. Percy Cerutty, one of Australia's authorities on physical fitness,' is an admirer of W.A. National League's training plan for the State squad. He told West Perth F.C. in a recent talk that "Footballers should train during the summer months for the winter game and use of weights under proper supervision is an essential part of any athlete's training. Under the present schedule of training twice a week, players cannot expect to play four quarters of football at full pressure."
