1 ACROSS MY DESK Red Onion Creative Ballarat FNL Operations Manager Scott Carey Ballarat FNL s Indigenous Round! Welcome to the Ballarat FNL s Indigenous Round. The BFNL is very proud of our themed rounds and in this particular case, how community football can highlight how Indigenous communities play an important role within the Ballarat Football Netball League. The Ballarat FNL Indigenous Round is a themed round to acknowledge and celebrate the Indigenous players of our game, and to highlight the proud history of the contribution of indigenous footballers in the Ballarat FNL and the greater region. The Ballarat FNL has over a number of years, followed the lead of the AFL in introducing a Round dedicated to acknowledge the contribution of Indigenous footballers, and it is worth noting some of the following key points which the AFL has provided that highlight the enormous contribution Indigenous Australians have played in the evolution of football. These include: Indigenous Australians represent less than 3% of the population, yet make up approx 11% of the AFL lists. Indigenous players have won 3 Brownlow Medals, 7 Norm Smith Medals & 3 AFL NAB Rising Star awards, with over 30 Indigenous players being members of an AFL premiership team. Between 2002 and 2006 indigenous children participating in AFL Kickstart clinics grew 300 per cent from 2000 to Up to 25% of current AFL lists players from diverse backgrounds (11% Indigenous). Over the past few years the Ballarat FNL has created our own No Limits United Through Sport advertising program that celebrates the cultural diversity of the Ballarat FNL, and which appears as posters at all Clubs and will appear in over 100,000 Footy Record this year. We are also committed to roll out AFL Goldfields Club Education Program for all Ballarat FNL players from U10 to Senior level which will nearly 4,000 players and will be delivered by Football Development Managers in the Region. Some of the initiatives planned for our Indigenous Round includes: BFNL to produce a special edition Indigenous Round Footy Record with a commemorative colour cover. BFNL to promote Indigenous Round via Media Release in the week leading into the round with the BFNL to launch Indigenous Round logo. On Deck Media s Shaun Kelly will be putting together a series of articles to promote: 1. The initiatives of the Redan, Darley and Bacchus Marsh FNC s to produce indigenous designed jumpers and netball dresses for this weekend. 2. Interviews with key Indigenous players and community leaders within the BFNL. Home clubs will paint the Indigenous flag colours in the centre circle on each ground. Home clubs will perform a welcome to country prior to the Senior match. Home clubs will ask a key indigenous member of their club or community to toss the coin prior to the start of the senior match. All AFL Goldfields clubs will be provided with an Indigenous flag to fly at their ground today. All AFL Goldfields clubs will be provided with a specially designed Indigenous football to be used in the Senior Football matches today. This weekend we celebrate the contribution our Indigenous communities make to our wonderful game. Continued Ballarat Football & Netball League Inc. 2 ACROSS MY DESK...(Continued) WorkSafe Community Championships First and foremost, congratulations to all players and officials who took part in last weekend s AFL Victoria Country WorkSafe Community Championships at the Whitten Oval in Footscray and represented the Ballarat FNL against the Western Region FL. The BFNL unfortunately couldn t come home with a win in the Under 19 or Senior matches, however we were very proud of the way that all players and team officials represented the Navy Blue & White. This now means we slip back in the rankings to play off in the 9th v 10th game in 2017 in a rematch of last year s game against the Bendigo Football Netball League once again at a venue yet to be determined. A huge thank you needs to go out to our Coaching Staff of each side. To Shaun O Loughlin, Gavin Webb, Mathew Cape, Glenn Wilkins, Rick Horwood and Eammon Gill who led the Senior Footballers in their nail-biting loss to Western Region. All have been outstanding in the past 6-8 weeks. To Tim Beacham, Anthony Beacham and Brad Baker, you guys have been fantastic with our U/19 Footballers. Thanks to you to all the Trainers led by Jim Everard and Peter Dwyer and to all the other support staff we had on the day, thank you for your contribution, it is very much appreciated. We had over 100 people involved across our Football & Netball Interleague sides on the weekend and everyone played a part in making the day an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. We also thank the Darley FNC, Bacchus Marsh FNC, Ballarat FNC and Lake Wendouree FNC s for hosting training sessions throughout the campaign, we couldn t have made the campaign run smooth without you so thank you too. And finally, we congratulate Sunbury FNC Senior Coach Rick Horwood as he heads into his 100th Senior game as coach of the Lions, a fantastic effort Rick, well done! 3 AT THE BAR with Theo & Digger Once again for the 2016 season, local footy fans Theo and Digger return to give their views and opinions on BFL footy each week, from the comfort of the Sports Bar at the Ballarat Leagues Club! Theo: Ummm, what is this mate? Digger: What do you mean? T: I know we haven t been here for a week but don t tell me that you ve gone all healthy and switched from beer to milk? D: Far from it mate, just trying to show support for our dairy farmers who have been hit with the rough end of the pineapple at the moment, and given that I can t find any brand-name milk at the supermarkets at the moment as they seem to be hiding it, I thought I d do my part here at the BLC given that they use brand-name milk all of the time plus I was told that if I drink my milk, it will help me see in the dark and after the past weekend, I might need that! T: Assume you re referring to the interleague game there. D: Yep, the damn thing finished at 5:30pm, and we were getting more light from the moon than the lights at the Whitten Oval. Not sure what the timekeepers were doing maybe they thought it was 25 minute quarters plus time-on as from my seat in the EJ Whitten Stand it didn t seem like there were a lot of goals or a lot of stoppages but it was pretty dark when the game finished, and still using a red footy! T: How was the day at the Whitten Oval apart from that? D: From a senior perspective pretty good with an undermanned side and a couple of blokes not doing much on the day. Thought the team played well, some unsung players stood up and a couple of big names did their thing, and thought we were desperately unlucky to not come away with the win. T: A couple of blokes not doing much tell me about that. D: Don t want to name names, to save a lynch mob from taking over the BLC Sports Bar, but I thought a high-profile forward didn t do much and missed some crucial goals, another late inclusion was good for most of the day but made a crucial error at the end, and one of my favourites looked a little over-matched at that level. T: Not naming names is admirable, but I think Blind Freddie could read between the lines there! D: I love the interleague concept and it s good to see how selected players respond at the higher level, and I was particularly impressed with Nick Hind from East Point, who was crucial down back until he hurt his ankle, and big Benny Sortino from Melton South in the ruck played a mighty game. T: What does the loss mean for the BFL? D: It looks like we re back on the Bendigo merry-go-round again, and given that the last couple of times we ve played Bendigo we ve been in Ballarat, it looks like we might see the QEO next year! T: What about the Under 19s? D: Looked terribly outmatched in the first quarter when they were blown off the park, and couldn t get back from there. Had some good players the Sullivans from Melton South looked good but very hard to fight back from such a start. T: OK, let s look at this week, and a pretty big game at Maccy Park between Melton and Bacchus Marsh kicks it off. D: Melton are slowly starting to win me around, although a win today will go a long way towards solidifying them as a contender. That said, I m still not sure about Bacchus Marsh away from Maddingley Park, so it will be interesting to see how they fare today. On paper, Bacchus Marsh look the better side and I m tipping them, but the Bloods could surprise. T: Huge game at Darley Park in the Grand Final rematch as the Devils face North Ballarat City. D: And a huge, huge game for Darley going into a week off for them they re 1-5 at the moment and can t really afford to be 1-6 if they have fixings on not just playing finals but trying to secure a double chance, but it s not going to be easy against North City, who s only blemish on the season came last round against the Lakers and if they had kicked straight in the first quarter, it may have been a different story altogether. Can t see Darley winning this, which puts them in a giant hole. T: East Point at home against Melton South, do you give the Panthers a chance? D: Nope, East Point will win this easily. Next T: Sebastopol and Lakers? D: Not quite as dismissive here, as a few VFL boys might float back to the Burras who have had the double bye now which has given a few blokes a chance to overcome some niggles. Still, they re playing the best side in the league, and they re not going to win this game. T: Last one, the Lions against the Lions at the City Oval. D: Redan and Sunbury? T: Spot on mate. D: Game of the round, make no mistake. Redan are in form now, but so are Sunbury. Putting everything on paper looks pretty similar, so going with the western Lions simply on the fact the game s being played at the City Oval. T: Well in mate same time again next week D: I ll be here mate, although my milk mustache might be replaced with some more traditional froth next week!!! 4 BFNL RECORD

5 ROUND 6 FOOTBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly With the AFL Victoria Worksafe Community Championships now in the rear-view mirror, we enter a pretty crucial time of the season in the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League, where the ladder is something that we start to pay more attention to, where wins and losses start to take on more significance and when the cold weather starts to kick in. Two of the most improved teams of the season, MELTON and BACCHUS MARSH, face off at Macpherson Park in one of the matches of the round today, and one that could further establish either teams bonafides for season You could have won a substantial amount of money by stating these two teams would be in double-chance positions at the interleague break, and today represents a great chance for the winner to start to get a bit of a gap inside the top three as well. Damian Cupido is the obvious one to watch here, having kicked a lazy 20 goals in his first two games as a Cobra, and Nick Gale and Malcolm Beck could look a little blearyeyed this morning having thought about having to stand Cupido and Cam Richardson today. Melton s confidence is at an all-time high though, and a win today will keep that confidence going through what s promising to be a pretty tough month ahead. PREDICTION: Both teams are in form at the moment, but BACCHUS MARSH are just going that little bit better at the moment and should do enough to get over the line again today. Huge, huge game for DARLEY today as they look to right the ship after their recent run of outs, although it will be a tough ask against a NORTH BALLARAT CITY side that will consider themselves unlucky not to still be undefeated at the moment after a bout of inaccuracy against Lake Wendouree in the first quarter of their pre-interleague top-of-the-table clash, and as Jordyn Burke found out, you don t give good sides a break like that and expect to win. So much on the line for Darley here, who have just the one win from their six games this season so far, and with this game sandwiched in between a couple of bye weeks, the Devils know that a loss here will make not just their top-three chances almost disappear, but also diminish their chances of even getting to defend their title in December. They ll be looking for a lift from the likes of Mitch Banner in the midfield against a pretty good North City midfield, and Luke Delahey or Leigh Spiteri could be candidates to fall back and keep a close eye on Derick Micallef, who, as we know, can change a game in the blink of an eye. Don t expect to see a scoreline like the last time these two teams played the 2015 Grand Final, which was a one-sided affair, as both teams know how important this one is. PREDICTION: The Devils will be in this one all the way, as their season depends on it, but NORTH BALLARAT CITY are in form at the moment, and won t drop this one. EAST POINT have a potentially interesting encounter today at the Eastern Oval against MELTON SOUTH. You know how some sides always have a bogey team? For the Roos, that team is Melton South, who they never seem able to shake, no matter what kind of form they are in. And with a couple of injuries in the Roos camp, notably Nick Hind and his ankle injury from the interleague game and young gun Joe Dodd, who is also sporting an ankle injury after playing for St Patrick s College recently, Glenn Wilkins will get a chance to see how deep his playing resources are today. The Panthers are improving with every week and will enjoy the chance to stretch their legs on the Eastern Oval, but like most young sides, they re prone to lapses in concentration, and if they lapse for too long today, the Roos will take advantage. PREDICTION: Might be closer than most think, but EAST POINT will get the win they need to keep pressure on the top six teams today. SEBASTOPOL welcome LAKE WENDOUREE to Marty Busch Reserve today, with the Burras coming off a two-week break having had the bye prior to the interleague break last week giving their playing list a chance to shake off a few niggles. As such, the Burras could be bolstered today expect to see star forward Michael Powell take to the park, expect to see a refreshed Brett Goodes and possibly a couple of VFL players looking for a run in the North Ballarat Roosters bye week, such as Oli Tate and Daniel Cox. They ll need it too, coming up against the undefeated Lakers who are strong all over the field at the moment and who have several players coming back from interleague duties including Nathan Pring, who was very impressive in the navy blue and white last weekend. This won t be a repeat of the 120 point margin between these two sides early last year, and the Burras could even give the Lakers a few headaches early on if they re on their game today. PREDICTION: LAKE WENDOUREE will get the points, but not before a scare Match of the Round today is at City Oval as REDAN and SUNBURY meet each other in what is truly one of the more unique rivalries in footy, in that it s a rivalry born from respect rather than hatred, born from both sides meeting in meaningful situations so many times, and recently from being there for each other during some very trying times. All that, though, will be out the window come 2:15pm, as there s a fair bit at stake for both sides as a win will keep Sunbury pushing for a top-three spot and start to give them some separation at the top end of the ladder, whilst Redan, who have four clubs a game ahead of them and four a game behind them, need to win to keep in touch with the top sides. This should be some sort of game as well, as both teams are in form at the moment and both have several weapons through the midfield at their disposal you d pay money to see Nathan Horbury, Dean Mathews, Chris Giampaolo and Callum Currie come up against Alik Magin, Andrew Duhau, Joe Redfern and the in-form Nathan Wood. I was impressed with my first look at Grant Valles during the interleague game last week and his versatility will be a key today he could go back to keep Brenton Riordan honest, or join Jack Sheahan and Josh Burgess in stretching the Redan backline who aren t overly tall, so this one could come down to how Eammon Gill and Rick Horwood perform in the coaches box. PREDICTION: Tough game to tip between two evenly-matched sides, so as I said on the BFNL Footy Show this week, I m going with REDAN solely because of today s venue if it were down the road, the blue Lions would have gotten the nod! 8 BFNL RECORD

6 ROUND 6 NETBALL PREVIEW by Shaun Kelly We ve come to an interesting time in the BGT A Grade netball competition, where we re starting to see the ladder take shape, and where games are starting to take on more meaning as teams get a feel for where they re at this year and weather conditions make playing conditions tough. Let s cast an eye over this weekend s Round 6 matches as we resume netball after the interleague break. Must-win game for MELTON as they take on BACCHUS MARSH at Macpherson Park today should they harbor thoughts of playing finals, they need to win today to stay in touch with the top flight after a crushing loss against East Point back before the interleague break. Bacchus Marsh coach Dean Giarrusso probably wouldn t have wanted the interleague break to come given that his team was building some nice momentum in the two weeks prior with their first win of the season and a close result against Ballarat before the interleague break. Melton probably still haven t had their full side on the court at the same time this season, which means there s still a touch of the unknown about them, and if Melton playing coach Renee Hulls is on song in goals, it could be the impetus towards victory that the Bloods need. PREDICTION: Going with a slight upset here and putting BACCHUS MARSH in capital letters here, as I feel that they re just going that little bit better at the moment. DARLEY face another huge test today as they welcome reigning premiers NORTH BALLARAT CITY to Darley Park, and Devils coach Marika Barnes would have been one that welcomed the interleague break as the Devils have hit a plateau after their hot start to the season. It doesn t get any easier for them today, as North City remained undefeated last round thanks to a come-from-behind win over Lake Wendouree, turning it on in the last quarter as they ve been so known to do, and as we know have a star-studded line-up at their disposal. PREDICTION: Annie s Angels shouldn t have too many troubles today NORTH CITY to win comfortably EAST POINT will christen the brand new court at the Eastern Oval today as they welcome MELTON SOUTH to their home court in what will be another enormous test for Melissa Climas young Panthers side, but one that will also be a tremendous learning experience for them too. As predicted, Kate McLeod made her East Point debut last round against Melton, although if she plays again today, she ll come up against a coach that knows a fair bit about her game, having coached her at Macedon in the Riddell District FNL in recent years. The Roos have a bye next weekend, so expect them to go at full throttle early on today. PREDICTION: EAST POINT to win this one comfortably going into next week s bye/ Interesting game at Marty Busch Reserve today as LAKE WENDOUREE travel to SEBASTOPOL in a game where we ll learn a bit more about how both of these sides will fare this year. The Lakers almost did what no-one has been able to do in the last 18 months in defeating North Ballarat City last round, leading by five goals at three-quarter time before the reigning premiers put the foot down to overrun them in the final quarter, with Sebastopol players and coaches no doubt paying attention given their bye in Round 5. Sebastopol have shown that they have the capabilities to play finals this year, but I m yet to be convinced that they can make a splash if they get there a win against a big scalp like the Lakers is something that they ve been craving for the last few years now, and would go a long way towards the Burras gaining the respect of the netball world. Lake Wendouree have gotten a huge on-field lift from playing coach Kirsty Walsh this year, returning to an on-court role and looking like she d never left, and it s helped strengthen their midcourt rotations and make them look so powerful feeding the ball into goalers Kellie Berry and Steph Burns. Well worth the $10 admission to take a look at this one today. PREDICTION: LAKE WENDOUREE will get the win, I think, but the Burras will push them the whole way. Match of the Round takes place at the City Oval this week as REDAN host SUNBURY in what s shaping as a key encounter for both sides. Sunbury have gone through the season without a blemish so far this season, as evidenced by their win over Melton South before the break which featured a 53-goal explosion from Beck Anstey, whilst Redan have slowly gone about getting their season back on track in recent weeks thanks to a hard-fought win over a Darley team that always gives them troubles in their last round. That game also represented one of the rare times that Ruby Parry and Tasha Dack have found themselves occupying the same goal ring this year, and with Dack improving every week as she adapts to Victorian conditions, this duo is only going to get better as the season goes on. They ll face a tough test this week though, as you could argue that Monique Clark and Rachel Dovaston are the in-form defensive combination of the league at the moment, and they ll be dead keen to get a win today ahead of a testing couple of weeks. PREDICTION: This one will be a lot closer than what the ladder suggests, but SUNBURY should get the win today. 10 BFNL RECORD

7 A MESSAGE FROM WORKSAFE AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY School Football back in 2016 Football is back on the agenda for thousands of Victorian students this season, after the 2016 AFL Victoria School Programs season was officially launched at Collingwood Football Club s Holden Centre on Wednesday. Students from 20 different schools were in attendance to welcome a fresh year of football, along with new Magpie recruit James Aish, Collingwood VFL coach Dale Tapping, Western Bulldogs player and Carlton Female Ambassador Lauren Arnell and former AFL star David Rodan. Representing 15 different School Sport Associations, the select group of students and coaches enjoyed a tour of the Collingwood Football Club facilities and a Q&A session with some of the game s greats. Catering for students of all ages, AFL Victoria School Programs include initiatives such as Umpire Academies, AFL 9s in School, Access All Abilities clinics and specially designed curriculum to engage students from a multicultural background. In 2015, more than 76,000 participants engaged in AFL Victoria School Programs, while a further 700 teachers from Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions completed Level 1 AFL Coaching Courses. In addition, the launch also highlighted the amazing work of more than 2,000 Woolworths AFL School Ambassadors who continue to encourage their students to take up opportunities and play Australia s indigenous game. AFL Victoria chief executive Steven Reaper said that the launch was about recognising the fantastic football programs available to students throughout the state. AFL Victoria recognises that there are amazing football programs being run at Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels across Victoria, all of which require an ongoing contribution from Victoria s outstanding teaches, he said. Season 2016 is a very exciting year for school football with some new and exciting changes being introduced across the board. With more than 108,000 students participating in school football competitions last year, 2016 is expected to be another huge year of football, with the return of the Herald Sun Shield. Hundreds of schools from across Victoria take part in the competition which has grown to involve eight School Sport Associations competing in each of the boys and girls divisions. Ballarat s St Patricks College will be seeking its seventh straight Herald Sun Shield title this season while Methodist Ladies College will defend the Senior Girls Division Shield. 12 BFNL RECORD

16 MELTON BLOODS BANTER BACCHUS MARSH COBRA S CHATTER A huge match for the Bloods this week against the Bacchus Marsh Cobras. Both side s are tracking well at second and third rungs on the senior ladder. It will be a true test for both teams. The Reserves should also be a close tussle with teams in 6th and 7th spot. Likewise in the Under 18.5 the teams are neck and neck at 3rd and 4th. Providing the weather holds up we are in for a spectacular day s football. Over on the Nadine Webber Netball court, things should also be pretty close with not a lot separating most grades. We do need game day volunteers for duties like time-keeping, interchange stewards and doing club votes. These are essential tasks which need to be filled for home games and away games. Please give your team manager a break and offer to help out. A new batch of Polo shirts and other apparel has arrived, so there is no excuse for player not turning up to games in club gear. If you have ordered a long sleeve jumper the first batch has also been delivered. Today of course is the Indigenous round and in keeping with tradition there will be brief ceremony prior to the main game where we pay our respect to the traditional owners the land. On the social front the next major item is the big 10K draw on 26th of June. Tickets have now been printed and will go on sale at $100 a shot this week. I was a little early in my prediction last week but now I have it on good authority that the tickets have been printed and delivered. Players will be issued a number of tickets for them to sell as will committee members. Other tickets will be on sale at the club. Be on the lookout for your chance to snag a major prize. Apart from individual tickets there will be a number of syndicate tickets generated. So just be aware of this and expect a tap on the shoulder for a $10 contribution from time to time. This is a major fundraiser for the club and it is essential that players and members get behind it. Today we are hosting our annual Sponsors and Meltonians function. Festivities commence at midday with a meal served at around 12:30 pm or when everyone gets seated. This is our biggest opportunity to thank our sponsors in a tangible way. We hope as many as possible turn up for the day. Also welcome to the lunch are all our Meltonians members. As a special guest speaker we have former AFL legend Doug Hawkins who should be highly entertaining. A reminder for all members to use our sponsors as often as possible. Their support helps keep the club going. New sponsors are turning up thanks to the efforts of our committee people., Greg and Hursty have been particularly active. Thanks Guys. The latest to join is Willandra who are developing the new housing estate in Coburns Rd just south of Minns Rd. You would have seen their signs on the left while driving up today. Player sponsorships are also trickling in and photos of sponsored players will be appearing on out TV screen in coming days. Team App is a great way for the club to communicate with members. If you have not already subscribed to the app go to and search for Melton Football Netball Club. We have 121 registered users so far and there is room for more. Check the website www. meltonfnc.com.au for all the latest news from the Club, including the popular Daisy TV. GO BLOODS Interleague Round Last weekend there were no games due to the Interleague round. Representing the G B Forestry Cobras and making the club very proud were: Senior football - Alec Del Papa, Jackson Bolton and Damian Cupido who were all amongst the goal kickers and played well. In the U19 s - Billy Griffiths, Sam Griffiths, Joshua Calvitto & Dylan Bishop each held their own during the game. Round 6 Indigenous Round This weekend is the Indigenous Round and we travel to neighbouring Melton, hope to see you there. The Bendigo Bank is a proud partner of the Bacchus Marsh FNC and is very proud to be sponsoring and have graciously supplied the Indigenous jumpers for this round. Travis Hodgson (our senior coach) has for many years worked with the Aboriginal communities; he currently works and manages a hostel which is set-up as a crisis accommodation arrangement for homeless aboriginal youth and young men aged years. It includes intensive case management, assistance in gaining schooling and employment and teaching living skills. For the previous 4 seasons, Travis coached the Fitzroy Stars in the Northern football league; the Stars are a predominately aboriginal club but also embrace non aboriginal people. The stars are more than just a football club and act as a meeting place for the aboriginal community to come together. The focus is as much on health and wellbeing as it is on football and as a former coach of the club and through his employment Travis has and still is very much involved in the community. 18 DARLEY DIARY NORTH BALLARAT CITY Football: First of all congratulations on such a great effort with the injuries that resulted in late changes to the squad, but also commiserations to the BFNL Interleague seniors, who were narrowly defeated by the WRFL in a game that could have went either way. Congrats to Steven Kennedy who was given the huge honour of captaincy, Lukey Delahey and Mitch Banner on making the team. This week we host North City and replay the Grand Final of We look forward to what will be a Grand Final game for the Darley FNC in a must win game. We also celebrate the Indigenous Communities of Australia and recognise and acknowledge their contributions to this great nation. Today our players will proudly wear our Indigenous Guernseys and show our respect for aboriginal culture, heritage and the ongoing relationship the traditional owners have with their land. Netball: A weekend off netball and our girls should come out refreshed, energised and ready to go. Good Luck to all sides today.. Would love to see you all get the points today. Social: This Sunday May 29th you are all welcome to a catch up session at Melbourne Public, 11 Dukes Walk, South Wharf starting at 12pm. For those of you that have booked to travel in on the bus, it leaves Darley Park at 11am sharp and will return to the park at 7pm. Come along and listen to some live music, enjoy the great food and watch the footy on the screens. Don t forget our Mid Year Ball is fast approaching. Tickets available now. Saturday 25th June you don t want to miss out on our Ball in the Barn!!! Darley Den: On a sad note, one of our long time life members and past premiership players in John Carr passed away peacefully on Saturday 21st May. A true gentleman and huge supporter of our club. Mr Carr attended all of our home games for as long as he could manage. We express our deepest sympathy to his family and close friends. We will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace. Rumour has it that Chewy is learning to speak French. Get around him in his efforts on this very difficult language. Who am I? How many Grand Final draws has there been in VFL/AFL history? This week we travel down the road to Darley for the Grand Final rematch and for the BFNL Indigenous round for Today we acknowledge our Indigenous players and their contribution to the game both in present day football and from the past. At North Ballarat we celebrate their achievements and look forward to today s game with great enthusiasm. Last week was disappointing for the senior sides with losses to Lake Wendouree at their home ground. With a reduced bench by two at half time it was difficult for us to maintain our pressure in the game and with some poor kicking we were unable to overcome a more accurate Lakers outfit. Ryan Luke and Ben Simpson in defence were both notable performers for us on the day. Our Reserves were unable to get their first win of the season despite leading up to three quarter time. Lakers outscored the boys in the last quarter 38 points to 1 to take the win despite some improved footballers from the reserves boys. Good games again from Lachie Simpson and Nathan Olver. The U/18.5 s had a terrific win over the Lakers. Well done to the kids for overcoming some aggressive play to go on and win by 82 points at the end. All boys played well, were strong to the ball and shared the workload to bring about a good win. Great games by all but special mention to Flynn Appleby and Trent Moss. The netballers continue to impress with great wins and a draw on the day to remain undefeated in all grades. They are all impressive groups of girls and let s hope they can keep up the terrific form for all season. This week we go back to the Millers Arms after the game for our ipod shuffle night. If you haven t got your song on the list yet then make sure you see Emily Pellegrino or Josh Bromley Lynch today it could already be too late. Come along and support our club sponsor and have a fun evening. Good luck to all competing today. Go Northies. 34 BFNL RECORD

Ballarat Aboriginal art group The Pitcha Makin Fellaz submitted a design which combines two of their original pieces of work to the Bulldogs, which was then chosen to adorn the indigenous jumper that the Bulldogs will wear in both this weekend s Indigenous Round match against Collingwood at the MCG, and also again in Round 11 when the Dogs host a home game at Etihad Stadium against the West Coast Eagles. Our indigenous guernsey for the last two years has been one that Anzack Newman designed in connection with [former player] Liam Jones, said Western Bulldogs Ballarat Engagement Manager Brett Goodes. When I started my job [in November 2015] and with our push into Ballarat, I thought wouldn t it be great for an aboriginal group or person from Ballarat to design the jumper. I got on top of that straight away, and through my connections and relationships approached a few groups here in Ballarat letting them know we were looking for a new design. The Pitcha Makin Fellaz were one of those groups, who have been very busy doing a mountain of work, and they ve been commissioned to do work at various galleries including a gallery opening in Ballarat next month, as well as at the White Night in Melbourne recently. What they did was combine their designs from two previous pieces of work, which really worked and their design was one that they went with. The design holds special meaning to the local indigenous community and also to Goodes personally, especially with the issues that his brother, Brownlow Medallist and former Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes, faced in the final year of his storied career last year. The design is made up of two parts, Goodes commented. The background, which is the wattle and the blue part, is made up from a piece called Coat of Arms, which is their version of reclaiming the Australian coat of arms for us, the Aboriginal people. The key part of that piece is their coat of arms, which isn t on the footy jumper, but the background of that piece makes up the back of the jumper, as the nice blue flows in with our Bulldogs blue. The main feature on the jumper is The Great Black Pointer, which is like a key person in the community, usually an elder, pointing the way for the younger generation and saying this is the right way of doing things, but also at the same time pointing out how not to do things and showing the way. A strong part of Aboriginal culture is learning from your elders and telling stories about the bad things, the good things and the way we should do things going forward. There is also some reference in there around the strong leaders that have stood up and pointed out racism in the community, people that need to be respected and celebrated for their courage. The personal connection continued for Goodes, as once the design was selected and he had a chance to meet the artists, he realized the close personal connection he also shared with the key members of the group. When I finally got to meet The Pitcha Makin Fellaz, I knew Peter Shane Rotumah, I d played in some Aboriginal football carnivals against him, Goodes commented. Scotty Marks, I grew up with his cousins Ricky and Tony. Adrian Rigney s a Dimboola boy, and I remember growing up with him and his brother PJ, and there s some Aboriginal elders that are part of that group as well. It s one of the high points of a big year for the local group, who will also have their work featured in a major upcoming festival in Melbourne. We ve got the exhibition down at the Melbourne Museum for Bunjilaka, and we re going to have an exhbition up here in July during Naidoc Week, Peter Shane Rotumah told The Courier recently. That s going to be called Black Face Real Face...we ve got Aboriginal people from the community and took photos of their faces (before painting them), we ve got young fellas, elders, to come in and do it. The Ballarat connection for the Western Bulldogs continues to go from strength to strength as the club moves closer to the goal of playing AFL matches in the city next year, and it s been strengthened again through the work of The Pitcha Makin Fellaz helping the Bulldogs to recognize and appreciate the role of indigenous players throughout the game of Australian Rules Football. 38 BFNL RECORD

21 It s hard to imagine now that footy wasn t the first choice sport for a young indigenous kid growing up in country Victoria in the 1990 s named Brett Goodes, especially after an AFL career with the Western Bulldogs and three premierships at VFL level, including a best-onground performance in Footscray s 2014 win, but there were a couple of other things that occupied young Brett s time and thoughts. We came from a soccer background in Adelaide before we moved to country Victoria as kids, Goodes said recently. Initially we couldn t play footy as we were Jehova s Witnesses and were always busy on Sundays, so we couldn t play Aussie Rules as the local competition was on Sundays. Adam started playing as he was older and he had the option, whereas [younger brother] Jake and I still had to go to church, so I didn t start playing until I was 12 years old with the Horsham Tigers. To be honest, I didn t really like footy at that time, I wanted to play rugby, but in country Victoria there was nowhere to play rugby [back then] so I played footy with a few cousins, plus it was a social thing it s what everyone did on the weekends, so we did it as well! But once Goodes took to footy, he soon realized that he had a passion for the sport, and the success of his older brother also made him think that he had a chance of making it to the big time, which he soon went about trying to achieve. Adam soon became really good at [footy] he was a good sportsman all round, footy, cricket, basketball and seeing him go really well at it being four years older than me and going through the Rebels program, even though I didn t have an understanding of what all that was back then, was an inspiration to me. Having AFL clubs come to our house to have meetings with Mum and Shane Sexton, who was the [Rebels] Regional Development Manager at the time, there was a bit of hype around it all. Then seeing Adam get drafted made me think, well Adam s going to the big time, there s no reason why any of us can t, but also the small things like Adam being the first in our extended family to finish Year 12 that made me think well if he can do it, I can do it too! and gave me that belief to achieve those things. I d started playing at Horsham College, then we moved to Dimboola and I played local footy and school footy there, and soon found myself moving through the talent pathways the Under 15 schoolboys and the Timmy Watson Legends as they called it in Dimboola, and then the Rebels system came next after that, and I played the last six games of the 2000 season [with the Rebels] as a bottom-aged 16 year old, and played with the Rebels for the next two years. It was during this period of his life though where Goodes went through what most indigenous kids in western Victoria heard about but never wanted to experience being singled out on the footy field because of GOODES JOURNEY LEADS HIM TO BURRAS the colour of his skin, something that has stuck with him and helped shape the path of his life. I had a strong group of indigenous brothers and cousins around me all the time, so we looked out for each other a bit, Goodes remembers of that time in his life. We copped some here and there, but it was quickly knocked on the head. As a young indigenous fella though, your first thing was to get really defensive and have a start swinging mentality rather than approach things a different way like I would now. I remember quite vividly a school footy match where I played for Dimboola against Kaniva, and I can t remember the guy s name, but I can remember one of the Kaniva players calling me a black c, and I remember just losing it and going for him. I got red-carded, so it didn t help anyone other than their team, but I remember at the time being really upset, really hurt and really angry, and as a young fella I didn t have any of the tools to be able to deal with that right at the coalface. When I think back to that day I ask myself how could I have dealt better with that situation? Obviously I know now, but I think going forward that my role in the community is to try and help those guys, and help the non-indigenous players and people in the community to have tools to deal with that, once they see that, to deal with it right then and there. After finishing his junior footballing days with the Rebels, Goodes moved to Ballarat to finish his schooling at Ballarat & Clarendon College along with a few friends, chalking up one of the major milestones he set himself earlier in his life. There was four of us at the time, Adam Fisher [who was rookielisted by Melbourne], Luke Brennan [who played with Hawthorn and Sydney], Dean Mathews [premiership player with Redan] and myself, that all came down from the Wimmera, and was the start of College encouraging talented footballers to attend the school on scholarships, recalled Goodes That was the first year that College beat St Pats in 18 years in school footy, so we got looked after pretty well. Injuries and work ethic combined to de-rail Goodes other dream during his final year of secondary school though, the dream of following his brother to footy s pantheon. I had compartment syndrome during Year 12 and didn t do any preseason, and had a pretty average season because of it, said Goodes. I was pretty lazy at that age as well, and I didn t comprehend how hard you need to work. I thought it was just going to happen, if you d asked me before my final year of Under 18 s I would have told you it was automatic that I d get drafted and that I didn t have to work hard and do those extra things. History tells us that it didn t happen, so Goodes changed his focus a little bit, with injuries again not helping his cause, before a friend stepped in to help get his dream back on track. After school I moved over to Adelaide, as I had family there, and played SANFL I played one senior game then broke my wrist, then came back to Ballarat the following year, said Goodes. I did some work, got sick of that, then went to uni, and in that time I played with the Roosters in the VFL reserves I probably played over 40 VFL reserves games during my time with North Ballarat. I was enjoying being a young fella and enjoying the lifestyle going out mid-week through uni, having big weekends and those sort of things and not taking it that serious. It wasn t until I was about 23 that a good mate of mine who was the strength and conditioning coach at the Roosters at the time took me under his wing and said mate, you re a good player, let s get some work in here before pre-season starts so you can really start ahead of the group. We worked pretty hard together, every second day we d be doing something, and come that pre-season I was up at the top of the running groups with some pretty fit blokes like Dan Feery and Steve Clifton, and that s when I gained an appreciation for how hard I could work and what I needed to do. Once the penny dropped, Goodes became one of North Ballarat s VFL stars, and AFL clubs started taking notice. I remember at the end of the 2007 season after I d had a really good year the Kangaroos, who we had an alignment with, had a word to me about doing some training, not with them, but here in Ballarat following their training schedule, said Goodes. We got the work done, and I was doing their 3.2km time trial not with them, but around Lake Wendouree and I was in their top five in terms of times. I didn t get picked that year, Donald McDonald called me and mentioned that I d just missed out, it came down to the last pick in the rookie draft and they went with Michael Wundke, from SA, instead. He said that as a rookie I d only be playing VFL [with the Roosters] anyway, so to go about it, have another good year and to see what happens. As a result of this, Goodes focused on having another solid season in 2008 to ensure he wasn t overlooked again, and after nine rounds of the season had polled 16 votes in the Liston Trophy, the VFL s Best & Fairest award, and things were on track until he suffered a pretty nasty quad injury, which was initially treated like a corked muscle before it wasn t getting better and the severity of the injury was realized. It wasn t until the last two games of the season that Goodes returned to the side, then played a part in North Ballarat s first ever VFL premiership side, but the damage had apparently been done. I had a great year, played in a premiership and James Podsiadly pipped me by two votes in the Liston I didn t poll another vote after Round 9 then didn t hear boo from the Kangaroos at the time and thought that ship had sailed, Goodes mentioned. I stuck at it for another year, still with the hope that something might come out of it, and come 2009 I had another great year personally and we won another flag, but didn t hear boo again and that s when I decided to focus on my work life. That focus firstly took him to St Patrick s College, where he worked for a year as their Indigenous Education Manager, then to Darwin in a similar role with AFL Northern Territory, which is where the Western Bulldogs first came calling. Chris Maple, a connection I had from Ballarat, was a player development manager at the time, and they d just drafted Zeph Skinner, a kid I was working with in Darwin, said Goodes. As part of drafting him, they looked at their welfare and development program, which was a big push from the AFL and the AFLPA at the time, and a position opened up there so I took that. Initially upon his return, Goodes was considering playing football in Geelong with friends as he didn t want to play against North Ballarat, but eventually realized that playing footy with the players he was working with had its benefits, so started playing with Williamstown in the VFL, who the Bulldogs were aligned with at the time, but not after penning a letter to the Roosters explaining his decision I remember writing a letter to North Ballarat at the time, explaining my decision and my feelings about playing against them, and the club responded pretty well to that and the players did as well, knowing it was a work choice and nothing personal, said Goodes. Two years later, after a 2012 end-of-season trip with the Bulldogs to London for an AFL exhibition game that doubled as a team bonding trip for the upcoming season, then-bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney pulled Goodes aside for a chat that would change his footballing future forever. I had a pretty good relationship with most of the players, having worked with them and played footy with a lot of them, and Macca tapped me on the shoulder once we got back and asked me to do a pre-season, recalled Goodes. I trained more as a coach than anything, I wasn t trying to make it too obvious that I was training, but I was doing the running and everything else [with the players]. The first two weeks were really hard, but I got into it and had a really good pre-season, then it came down to Brent Prismall or myself for the last spot and this time I got lucky. Goodes was picked with the fourth pick in the 2013 rookie draft, and made his AFL debut in the opening round of the 2013 season against the Brisbane Lions, fulfilling his AFL dream. Three years later, with the curtain having come down on his 22 game AFL career, the Bulldogs offered Goodes a job in the newly-created position of Ballarat Engagement Manager, and his thoughts turned to playing football in the local area again. Having spoken to many clubs in the region, Goodes settled on playing with Sebastopol in the Ballarat FNL through a connection with a former teammate and coach in Shane Snibson. Shane said to me that a lot of people have their own ideas about Sebastopol and pre-conceived ideas about many places in Ballarat, and his focus was that a lot of people are saying that they need to do this and do that, but no-one was willing to help them out, said Goodes. I really liked that he was going down to help out a club that had been struggling for a long time, and I remembered that when I was playing Rebels back in 2000, Sebas played in a Grand Final that year, and guys that were playing there at the time like Willie Rioli, Tim Chatfield, Popsy Collard, Damien Skurrie and Beamsy, a lot of indigenous players that got them up into that Grand Final, and I remember those days pretty fondly. That helped Goodes make the decision to play at Sebastopol this season, and so far he hasn t missed any of the Burras five games, and is looking to make Marty Busch Reserve his home for many years to come. It was always going to be a longer-term commitment [to Sebastopol], it was never going to be just a one-year commitment, and I ll definitely be there to help get players that have left the club in past years, be it due to a lack of success or otherwise, to return and help re-build Sebastopol into a powerhouse. 40 BFNL RECORD

22 AFL GOLDFIELDS CONTINUING TO BE PROACTIVE WITH RACISM After a successful launch in 2015, the AFL Goldfields Indigenous and Multicultural Steering Committee are firmly focused on implementing another range of initiatives to help AFL Goldfields clubs deal with the scourge of racism in their communities, and to highlight the important role that indigenous Australians play in football and netball clubs across the region was a watershed year for AFL Goldfields with regards to their indigenous activities once again, their Indigenous Round was well-received across all leagues, but the introduction of the first ever AFL Goldfields Indigenous Lunch was a highlight of the indigenous round activities, and was well-represented not just by AFL Goldfields clubs and leagues, but also by aboriginal elders and members of the community which pleased AFL Goldfields Regional General Manager Rod Ward. Looking back, we were thrilled with the response to our Indigenous Lunch last year, as it was a fantastic way to not just engage and interact with our local aboriginal elders and members of indigenous communities, but also to give clubs more of an understanding of what indigenous players have been through in past years, Ward mentioned. Being able to present each club with a plaque acknowledging the traditional owners of the land that their club s facilities sit on was an initiative that we were very proud of, and it s great to see that clubs across all four AFL Goldfields leagues have placed these plaques in prominent positions in their club rooms and buildings. In 2016, AFL Goldfields are taking it one step further and have provided clubs with special footballs to be used in this year s Indigenous Round, featuring a special aboriginal design on the ball. Playing each game with a special indigenous Sherrin is something that we re looking forward to this weekend, Ward commented. We had a special design commissioned initially and painted on two footballs that were showcased during last year s Indigenous Lunch, one of which the Creswick FNC were lucky enough to purchase at auction, and whilst we would have loved to use this design for this year s footballs, the design was too intricate in its detail to be reproduced en masse. We have found a ball though with a unique design that pays homage to the indigenous history of our great game, and we re looking forward to it being used all across the AFL Goldfields region this weekend. The Steering Committee is also looking at ways to help educate AFL Goldfields clubs and their members on how to deal with potentially volatile situations involving racism, with former AFL player Brett Goodes, who has moved to Ballarat to take on a role with the Western Bulldogs this year and who is well-known across the region, spearheading this campaign after joining the Steering Committee earlier this year. We ve really been trying to push for some resources that we can get out to clubs, Goodes mentioned recently. I think it s important, and I ve spoken to some youth and local ambassadors at a local forum recently, to try and develop a community resource that gives kids the tools to effectively and properly handle issues they may encounter, whether it s racism, violence against women or anything, we want to try and give kids tools to deal with that situation. Back when I was a kid, my first instinct when dealing with racial slurs was to throw a punch instead of trying to diffuse the situation. It s a real key issue for me, being a part of the Steering Committee, trying to work on something there and developing a resource that can be first used by the person that s been racially vilified, but then by his or her mates around them, to try and be supportive and help them through it, as well as trying to diffuse the situation without resorting to violence, because that s the last thing we need. That will be something that we ll really focus on going forward. AFL Goldfields is also pleased to see a number of clubs wearing specially-designed indigenous jumpers as part of this weekend s Indigenous Round, with a number of clubs also incorporating smoking ceremonies, Welcome to Country speeches, visits from local aboriginal elders and a number of other initiatives into their match-days. As in previous years, the colours of the aboriginal flag will be painted into the centre circle of all football grounds used across AFL Goldfields this weekend, and the flag itself will fly high above those plying their trade on the field or court. Football- Last outing we played Sunbury under lights. We started well, we finished well but in between we were totally outclassed. Best player was Boofa Hibbert. Great to see Boof back playing some good footy. Keep away from them ladders mate. The reserves were never in the game and got a football lesson. The boys need to hit the training track and get to know how each other play, However, the under 18 s had a great game. Played 4 quarters of consistent footy. The boys are really starting to gel and play good footy. Best on the day was Jake Charge and Patty Unsworth pushing for the senior selection. The club would like to congratulate Billy and Brody Sullivan on under 18 s representation. Also to our big ruckman Ben Sortino. Ben wasn t in the initial squad but played good footy and was rewarded. To Ben s credit he played a great game and was named 3rd best. Well done big fella. Netball- The netball girls come up against a very good Sunbury outfit. We had 2 great wins with the D grade and under 19 s prevailing. Great to have a committed, fun bunch of girls at the club. 25 SEBASTOPOL LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES FOOTBALL REPORT After two consecutive byes we look forward to today s home game. With three solid training weeks under our belt and the return of our injured players we feel we are up to the challenge of a strong showing against ladder leaders Lake Wendouree. We would like to acknowledge and recognise the traditional custodians of the land today the Wathaurung People with the celebration of the BFLs indigenous round and extend a huge thank you to Peter Lovett who enlightened our club of the importance of the welcome to country ceremony at our club meals Thursday evening and Uncle Ted Lovett who preformed the welcome today. We would also like to welcome our new sponsors Total Tools, A1 Air conditioning, The Bottle-O,The Robinhood Hotel and Winport Developments to the club and acknowledge there ongoing support and please when requiring any of the product supplied by these people make them your number one choice. Tonight we have a fabulously entertaining social event planned with Gerard V Comedy Hypnotist. Last year the night was a resounding success, with all present enjoying the event and having a laugh, regardless of if they were on stage or not. The event kicks of at 7pm and tickets are available from Social and Junior Committee members and on team app. Tickets are $25 Adult, $5 Child and $10 for 16-18year olds and a light supper will be provided. So good luck to all today UP THE BURRA! SENIOR NETBALL REPORT After a two week break we look forward to this week s games against the Lakers teams and welcome them to play on our new court. All netballers acknowledge the fine work of Tony Butler and his team, in conjunction with the City of Ballarat, for the construction of the new court and its surrounds. Moving forward, having two courts will greatly assist the training opportunities for our junior and senior netballers. Enthusiasm at practice continues to be evident amongst our teams and players and supporters look forward to continued improvement in our on court performances. Our matches against North City a couple of weeks ago were played in very difficult conditions [wet and windy] and all players must be acknowledged for their efforts. Can all Burra supporters and players, whenever possible, make the effort to support our weekly sponsors namely Stewart s Bakery, Ringin s Butchery, Regent Cinemas and Love My Look. These businesses make a significant contribution each week in providing awards for our netballers and it is much appreciated. Thank you to the many netballers who have paid their memberships and to those who haven t, can you please make the effort to do so as soon as possible. Finally, it has been terrific to see the off court vocal support of our teams each week. This is greatly appreciated by the players who are striving each week to give their best. Hello to everyone and welcome back after the interleague break. Congratulations to all the boys who made the team and they went oh so close to pinching the game. Today we travel to Sebastopol for the games. A little bird tells me that Sebas might have a surprise or two for us this week. We will be celebrating the indigenous round and the Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club acknowledges the traditional Custodians of the land and celebrate their culture and history. After the North City game the club held its annual ball at the complex and what a great night it was for everyone. The club is so lucky to have someone like Julie Maher who performed her magic again and turned the hall into a set for the Academy awards. All the players and supporters responded and turned up in their finest. Special thanks to those that helped set up and especially those that helped clean up. Our next social function is tonight at the complex as the Netballers host the club with their Mexican theme night, its fancy dress so make sure you get along its sure to be a great night. Last game we took on our traditional rivals North City with mixed results across the board. In the netball there was several close games with North coming out on top in most of them. The A grade played a fantastic game but had a couple of telling turnovers in the last quarter that hurt them. They lost in a high standard game considering the windy conditions In B grade they lost by the narrowest of margins while C grade played out a draw. D grade and the unders both got beaten comfortably. In the football there was better news with the seniors having a great win. Pitto kept up his good form with 5 goals and Tom Littore played his best game for the club. Haysey and Chooka were also in the best. The seconds were awfully slow to get going but then came with a rush and had a great victory by 22 points. Some of the younger blokes were outstanding including Ambrose, H and Woody. The under 18 s continue to run hot and cold and couldn t go with North after a solid start losing by 80 points. Good luck to everyone today against Sebas and... Go Lakers. 48 BFNL RECORD

Sunbury was represented well last weekend in the inter league games played at the Western Oval against the Western Region, Grant Valles in the seniors who went down by 3 points and Will Healey, Jacob Bygate and Mick Edwards in the Under 19s who all played well but went down to a much older and experienced side. A milestone happens today that does not happen often at our level of club football-- -congratulations to Rick Horwood in coaching his 100th game today for the Sunbury Football Netball Club as well as reaching this tally of games to date Rick s achievements since coming to the Club are a reflection of his time, attention to detail and genuine concern for the whole playing list in getting his side to 3 Grand Finals winning 1 and narrowly going down in the other 2 and playing in the finals the last 2 years when not expected to with a very young list, we thank you for the past 100 games and support you in the coming ones in our quest for ultimate success this year. Today sees us playing a great friend and competitor in Redan we need to get a scalp from a team the calibre of Redan to see where we are at and if we can compete at the level required to figure at the end of the season, we would also like to acknowledge the Indigenous Round and offer our respect and friendship to those that are the traditional owners of this land. 29 BALLARAT FOOTBALL UMPIRES ASSOCIATION REPORT Last Wednesday, the BFUA held its annual Life Members Night. Congratulations to Les Sedman and Stan Schaper who were both awarded BFUA Life Membership in front of a large crowd of BFUA Life members, current members and family. Les and Stan have contributed greatly to the BFUA over a long period of time and are both very deserving recipients. BFUA is involved in an umpiring exchange this weekend with AFL Yarra Ranges. The exchange provides a great opportunity for BFUA Field, Boundary and Goal umpires to travel away and officiate in a different environment while also providing AFL Yarra Ranges umpires with the opportunity to officiate at local games within the AFL Goldfields region. Umpire Related Issues If any club has an umpire related issue that they would like to discuss with the BFUA in 2016, please Gary Learmonth at gary@aflgoldfields.com.au Each issue will be dealt with accordingly and passed onto the appropriate people within the BFUA. It is important that if a club does have something to discuss with the BFUA, the issue is presented to the BFUA through the right channels within your club. 31 NETBALL REPORT By AFL Goldfields Netball Manager Kim Bailey There has been a lot happening in the world of netball over the last week which will see a major change to how our elite netball competition is ran and giving our great game prime time national exposure. Netball Australia has this week announced new changes to the current ANZ Championship which will take place at the start of the 2017 season. Australia s leading women s sport will welcome an all new Australian competition, five-year landmark broadcast deal with Channel Nine and Telstra and three new teams into the competition. Netball Victoria is proud of the outstanding contribution our community and our team, the Melbourne Vixens, have made in creating this opportunity for netball. We expect this to drive increased investment into netball, investment that should contribute to the growth and development of the netball community throughout Australia, said Netball Victoria s President Jenny Sanchez. From February 2017, Netball Australia will deliver a new 8-team national netball league held across 17 weeks. The new league introduced will be positioned as the world s premier women s sporting league and will replace the current ANZ Championship competition in Australia. The new five-year broadcast deal will allow netball fans across the country to be able to watch all Australian netball content live, including the new national netball league, Fast5 World Netball Series and Diamonds international test matches. The broadcasting deal with Nine Network and Telstra is a breakthrough for women s sport, ensuring live free-to-air television for two games a week and live streaming and delayed television for all games from the 2017 season. With the introduction of Collingwood Football Club, Netball New South Wales / Greater Western Sydney Giants and Melbourne Storm into the 2017 competition, it will provide more opportunities for Victorian athletes coming through Netball Victoria s high performance pathway. Speaking to Netball Victoria s Acting Chief Executive Officer Katie Reaper about the introduction of the new 2017 competition format, she said, Netball Victoria is excited about the new competition format and ground breaking broadcast deal that greatly rewards the brilliant work women over generations have done to place our sport in this current position. We anticipate a number of long-term benefits to arise from this announcement for netball in Victoria, including deserved exposure of our sport through media, increased interest in netball leading to more fans, participants and commercial partners and most importantly our Victorian athletes having greater opportunities to play at the highest level possible as a result of more playing positions available across the competition, Reaper added. New teams will not only increase the competitions rivalry, it will also allow greater opportunities for athletes globally to play in what will be labelled the world s best league. For our own girls its back on the court this week after having a week off due to Western being unable to field a team for interleague. Hopefully we will be back up and running in This week Bacchus Marsh will be out to gain their second victory of the year over Melton. It should be a great game with both teams evenly matched. Sebastopol will have their work cut containing Lake Wendouree s rampant midcourt. This will be a game that Sebas need to win to count themselves as real contenders. Redan take on Sunbury at City Oval, the venue of many epic battles for these two teams and I am expecting this to no different. Sunbury will be looking to cement their position at the top of the table whilst Redan will be looking for a victory against one of the top teams in the competition. Should be a great game. Good luck to all teams this week. Happy Netballing. 60 BFNL RECORD
