Marist Year12 team heads into finals undefeated The 2018 Marist Year 12 team play their very last home game for the club this weekend, and despite being challenged at times throughout the season, they remain undefeated. The team, under the guidance of Matt Angus, is looking to prepare for a strong finals campaign. The Year 12 team has demonstrated the Marist spirit throughout the season. In fact all of the youth teams from Year 7 onwards have continued playing in the spirit of the game which has been admired by opposing teams and the Northern Conference League as a whole. Correspondence has been received from opposing clubs complimenting the club on their player s spirit and fairness, which is a positive reflection on the Marist coaches, managers, players and spectators.

2 Continued from page 1 Other youth teams have also had on-field success this season. Year 10 sits at the top of its division and is finals bound. Year 9 are sitting in the middle of their division and playing well. Year 8 were moved up to B division after the first five rounds which is a tremendous compliment and a challenge the team has taken head on. The Year 7 teams have challenged teams and won their share of games in a tough twelve team competition. Good luck to all our Youth teams over the remaining games and see you at the Youth Trophy presentations on Friday 14 th September. Marist Year 10 team Marist Football Club s 50th Anniversary Marist team of the century The Club s 50th Anniversary Dinner, held at Ambrose Estate at the Wembley golf course last month, was a trip down memory lane for many. The night was filled with wonderful memories, stories of past glory and acknowledgement of those who played important roles in making the club the success it is today. A dream team of the half century was named, with a mix of current and past AFL, WAFL and WAAFL players, who all started their journey at the Marist Football Club. Craig Nitschke and Phil Lamb hosted interviews which included plenty of laughs from guys like Matthew Spider Burton and Rob Malone. Those interviewed also took time to acknowledge key people like Kevin Lukey and Mal Green. Above: Craig Nitschke, Phil Lamb and Matthew Burton Many Marist premiership teams attended the night including the 1978 team, who celebrated 40 years since their big win. Their back to back coach Graham Duff, was also there to mark the occasion. Subsequent to the dinner, the club has been working hard behind the scenes to maintain contact with those who attended and also others who would like to reconnect with the Marist Football Club to ensure we bring back the rich history of the club. 3 Talented Claremont players train Marist Year 4 teams The Year Four Teams - Marist Black and Marist Sky Blue - had the privilege of being trained by a group of talented Claremont players last month. The players included former Marist players Kane Mitchell, Cooper Nitschke, Jeremy Goddard and Ryan Lim. The group helped the teams coaching staff with ball handling and kicking drills, ran some of their own drills and provided feedback to players during a scratch match. Each Claremont player also spoke to the kids about areas they should pay attention to; correct tackling technique, focusing on the ball from ground pick-ups and getting back to positions after stoppages. Fantastic year for Footy Champs Another successful year at Marist Footy Champs has almost been completed. While there was a good complement of returning players, this year there were some fresh faces with Molly and Charlotte - our first girls to join our Tuesday night training and game sessions. The team always has lots of fun, and they looked striking in their new jumpers, kindly sponsored by McDonald s Junior Sports Grants. Many thanks to our coaches Matt Geldard-Ker (Year 12 assistant coach) Josh and Oliver Pedley and Joel Frenzel, plus many more from the Year 12 team when available. While a small niche for our club, all should be congratulated, including our manager Nicole Milne. Footy Champs gives children with varying disabilities and special needs the chance to join a community football club, and Marist looks forward to another rewarding year of Footy Champs in Marist supports this district initiative and appreciates their interest in the development of our young players. 4 Sunday Times Volunteer of the Year Finalist Congratulations to our Sunday Times Volunteer of the Year Finalist, Josh Murphy. As our Auskick Coordinator, Josh does an outstanding job, always there early on Sunday mornings and working tirelessly to ensure our youngest members grow their passion for footy. We wish him luck as we wait to hear who the Claremont District winner is. The District winner will then be in the running to be named WA Volunteer of the year at the Sandover Medal night. Marist Girls Teams expanding in 2019 Congratulations Josh Murphy Marist AGM Date: Wednesday 12th September Time: 7pm Venue: Newman College Auditorium The Marist Junior and Youth Girls season has rolled into the second half of the season with the Friday night fixtures resuming on the 20 th July and set to run to the season conclusion on Friday August 24 th. The Junior and Youth Girls had a great time at the Annual Marist Auskick training day on Sunday 29 th July. The girl s players joined the Junior Girls coach Amy Woods to help train the 30 plus girls playing Auskick; a lot of fun was had by all as the current and future stars of female footy joined together for some footy based games and drills. The Auskick girls charged back to their teams after the training session ready to go for their match while the Junior and Youth Girls stayed for a welldeserved sausage in a bun. A very big thank you to Amy Woods for lending her time and expertise, a great time was had by all. The girl s competition is set to expand again in Marist is currently taking expressions of interest for players, coaches and managers for girl s teams in the following age groups: Being on the Marist Football Committee can be very rewarding. Not only does it give you an opportunity to help others and give back to the community, it can also be personally rewarding by helping you form new friendships and being part of a very successful organisation. 5 A memorable morning for Marist Auskickers Recently Auskick had the pleasure of hosting Junior Girls Coach Amy Woods, players from the junior and senior girls teams and the players from the senior boys team. Amy and the girls ran a special training session just for the Auskick girls. A huge amount of fun was had with the Auskick girls relishing the opportunity to train with the stars of Marist female footy. A special thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to come down and support Auskick. The energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers was infectious, and it made for a morning the Auskick boys and girls will not forget. The final day of Auskick is fast approaching and sure to be another memorable day with all teams and supporters encouraged to dress up in team colours! The senior boys were assistant coach for the day and did an awesome job training the starstruck Auskick boys. During the game, the cheering and support from the boys made the Auskickers feel like they were playing at Optus Stadium! A word from the President The year so far Season 2018 looks to be one of the more successful in recent years, not just for those vying for premierships but for the continued development of our Auskickers, Modified and Girls teams. Our coaches and managers are repeatedly acknowledged at district level for the way they represent the club and set the example of positive game day behaviour. As we approach the final month of the season we are all planning for team and club windups where hopefully we can all take some time to look back and reflect on a busy but extremely enjoyable year. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the organisation of this wonderful event that saw many past members re-live the Marist Football Club magic. It was a fitting way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this great club.

6 Club Annual General Meeting This year our AGM will be at 7pm on the 12th of September at the Newman College Auditorium and the club is desperately looking for committee members to come on board and lend a hand. As per the constitution all positions will become vacant and nominations are welcome for every role from president to general committee members. This is a great opportunity to help the club and give back to the community. Donation to Fair Game Marist Football Club has donated more than 400 Aussie rules Auskick jumpers to charity Fair Game, which provides recycled sport clothing and equipment to young people in disadvantaged communities around Australia. Marist is a community-based club that promotes a healthy lifestyle for children through football; we know how important sport is for their health and wellbeing and we hope the jumpers will encourage children to take up sport. We hope these well looked after jumpers can provide some benefit for children who aren t as lucky as our members and could do with a helping hand. Working together with Newman Marist and Newman College have strong links and we continue to work together for joint success. Newman College High School teams were largely coached by our Marist coaches including our senior Coach Matt Angus putting in many hours working with the school first XVIII team. Matt successfully re-established the Newman vs Churchlands HS trophy and whilst the game was played in torrential rain it was most certainly played in great spirit with Churchlands prevailing with a very late goal to break the deadlock. In the Junior School the Year 6 team was strongly represented by Marist players at the IPSHA interschool carnival. Matt Mazzuchelli volunteered on the day and together with Scott Harvie helped the team to an undefeated performance to take out the Eagles Cup. The team was thrilled and excited to have Josh Kennedy come to school to present the trophy and answer questions about what it takes to get to the AFL. Finals Congratulations and good luck to our teams who have made it into the finals, or are battling it out to make finals.
