1 9 th October 2018 WEEKLY NEWS 2018 Dear Parents and Guardians, We would like to welcome you to Term 4 at GWSC. As expected, there will be a flurry of activity over the next 11 weeks to ensure that all of our students are well prepared for the next stage of their education, be it continuing with us in 2019 or moving onto higher education or the workforce. As you are aware, we engaged in extensive consultation during Term 3 about a revised approach to our timetable structure for The consultation has informed our decision to move to a single start and finish time for all students from the beginning of Thank you to those who provided us with feedback through surveys and by . In light of the feedback we have formed the view that the benefits of the change outweigh the drawbacks. Overwhelmingly students and parents preferred an 8:30am 2:45pm school day (from the options that were provided). Consequently, from the beginning of 2019 the school day will commence at 8:30am and finish at 2:45pm. Students are encouraged to be on site no less than 10 minutes prior to the beginning of the school day to ensure that they are ready for classes to commence at 8:30am. I am very pleased to inform the community that the City of Monash have agreed to install a second pedestrian crossing immediately in front of the main school entrance on O Sullivan Road. This will alleviate the concerns that some parents and students have raised about the number of students crossing the road at a single point. We have also asked the City of Monash to liaise with the owner of the Dan Murphy car park to see if they can have a one way entry and exit at certain times of the day to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic into and out of that car park. We will keep you advised of the progress of this conversation. The revised start and finish times also differ from those of other local schools, making public transport less congested at relevant times. We appreciate that change is often hard for people and organisations, however we trust that you will appreciate that this decision is being made with the best interests of all involved. Most certainly we believe that there will be benefits for students. With this in mind, the revised times will soon become the new normal for us all. Kind regards Joanne Wastle - Principal

2 AFL Victoria SuperKick Grand Final STATE CHAMPION Jodeci Gillman-Timu AFL Victoria s SuperKick challenge is a state wide competition, open to all secondary school students, which is designed to engage more girls and boys in AFL football. During Terms 2 and 3 this year, schools from across Victoria conducted their own SuperKick competitions to see how far their students could kick a Sherrin footy. Following these intra-school challenges, the top 5 girls and top 5 boys from across the state were invited to participate in AFL Victoria s SuperKick Grand Final at Etihad Stadium. One of our Year 10 students, Jodeci Gillman-Timu, kicked his way into the Grand Final which was held over the holidays on Sunday the 23 rd of September. Jodeci was invited to attend the VFL Grand Final on this date and participated in the SuperKick challenge during half-time. Proudly sporting his GWSC GIANTS guernsey, Jodeci stepped up to the line and kicked three booming drop-punts, the furthest flying 58.2m on the full! This was by far the longest kick in the competition, resulting in Jodeci being named the AFL SuperKick State Champion for 2018! In celebration of his victory, Jodeci was awarded a $500 grand prize and he also won a $700 football equipment grant for our GWSC GIANTS footy program. Congratulations Jodeci, we are all very proud of your amazing achievement and can t wait to watch your future footy feats!!!! AFL Victoria SuperKick Grand Final STATE CHAMPION Jodeci Gillman-Timu

3 National Championships th September. We would like to congratulate Megan Fung and Michelle Mai; both in Year Eleven, who recently represented GWSC in that National Aerobics championships on the Gold Coast in mid- September. Megan and Michelle placed fifth in their section. They have both been training tirelessly over the last seven months and did a brilliant job performing their routine on the day. Fantastic effort, girls! Well done! Anna Rossetto Head of Physical Education and Health

4 Robotics at Glen Waverley This year our Robotics Club, made up of students from Year 7 to Year 9 have achieved some fantastic results. At the recent RoboCup Junior Australian Championships held in Melbourne from 5 th to 8 th October we had three teams competing against teams from all over Australia, China and South Korea. The teams were competing in the Secondary Rescue, Open Rescue and Standard League Soccer. The Secondary Rescue competition is designed to test the students by having them design and program a robot to follow a line, manoeuvre around, over and under a series of obstacles and then move a can out of an area. The course simulates a chemical spill and the robots have to rescue a person the can. Our team experienced highs and lows in this competition, however, despite their best efforts, they did not make the finals. The Open Rescue competition builds on the skills of the Secondary competition, however the robot now needs to be able to lift the can out of the rescue area. Again, our team experienced the highs and lows of competition and despite their best effort they also missed out on the finals. Both of these teams were a credit to the school in the way that they conducted themselves. In the Standard League Soccer is a new competition that we entered this year. Our team were able to win the Regional Competition, narrowly missed the finals on goal difference and then on the National Championships were defeated by two goals to place second in Australia. They were also awarded the University of Melbourne, Dean of Engineering Award for the Best Robot Design. Congratulations to all of the members of the Robotics Club for this year. We look forward to more success next year. Erfan and Jonathan at the Recent Austarlian Champioships with their awards.
