22 USC POSTGAME QUOTES USC vs. Arkansas State Sept. 5, 2015 Los Angeles Coliseum USC Head Coach Steve Sarkisian I thought we did well in our first game against a very dangerous opponent. This was a good football team, they will win a lot of games and probably go to a bowl again. We played 13 true freshmen tonight and had 23 players make Trojan debuts. We also got players back off injury. Kenny Bigelow, Jabari Ruffin, we had some guys change positions and they made those transitions smoothly. All in all it was a good first win. We re going to look at the tape and there s going to be plenty of room for improvement. We were not good on 3 rd down. There are areas for improvement, but for the first time taking the field, I was pleased with the effort, they played hard and played together as a team. On starting the season: It was easy. This is what I love to do. We moved on quite a bit ago as a family. It s not like we had to come in and turn the light switch on, we were prepared for this. I am proud of the guys. We only had three penalties tonight, which is an improvement on last year. We played a better second half. We did some things really well. On Adoree Jackson s status: We don t think it s serious. He felt a twinge and didn t have great strength at halftime. We have a deep football team that we can work with. On the gameplan against Arkansas State: I think a couple times we lost containment. We need to improve upon that, but all in all I thought we contained them well. Not only did we make it hard on him running the ball, but we defended the pass well. On playing a lot of players on defense: That will be the plan until it goes astray then you make the proper adjustments. Even at the end of the game we played three freshman defensive tackles and a true freshman safety. The only way in this game that you get better is by playing. You have to make mistakes and realize that s what coach has been talking about. I want us to improve individually, but also collectively and that comes from playing. Surely we got better on that front because guys got experience, and it made us a better team in the long haul. As we move through season, guys will start to jockey for position, but for now we re playing our people and they re doing their jobs. We held their offense to six points. On the running game tonight: I thought we did good. We didn t get to run a lot of plays tonight, unfortunately. We only ran 63 plays, so we didn t get as many opportunities as we d have liked. But when the guys got their chances they went hard. We wanted to get them more opportunities to get into the flow of the game. On pass protection: We had a couple blown assignments and gave up some sacks. There was a combination of things, I thought we shored it up in the second half, but it will be a point of emphasis when we go back. TB Tre Madden On his return to the field following injury: I feel like I did pretty good. On that fourth down coach talked about I could have used more power. But I feel I did pretty good. On the depth of the team: It feels good to have guys who can go in at any moment in the game. Leon McQuay and Matt Lopes played great today. It feels good because the stress isn t on you. Nine players made their first career start at A State, including six on defense and three on offense. The defensive starters included DL Waylon Roberson and Robert Mondie, LB Tajhea Chambers and DB s Bo Sentimore, Cody Brown and Blaise Taylor. Gaining their first offensive career start were OL Daniel Keith and Austin Moreton and TE Warren Leapheart. OFFENSE: Senior RB Michael Gordon recorded his 24th career rushing TD, which ties Lamont Zachery for the sixth most in school history. Arkansas State went over 300 yards total offense for the 59th time over its last 65 games, including all 14 during under head coach Blake Anderson. Redshirt freshman QB James Tabary saw his first career action, finishing 7 of 11 for a game high 95 yards, including a 40 yard completion to Darion Griswold. The 40 yard reception was the longest of Griswold s career. DEFENSE: True freshman LB Tajhea Chambers recorded his first 2.5 career sacks. His 2.5 sacks tied the 14th most for a single game in school history. Chambers also collected a team high eight tackles as well. Senior DB Rocky Hayes recorded a career high eight tackles, topping his previous career high of seven set against Memphis in Junior LB Quanterio Heath posted a career high eight tackles in his second career start. His previous high was three, set in four previous games. The Red Wolves, who ranked 17 th in the nation in sacks a year ago with 2.85 per game, posted five against the Trojans. Sophomore DE Ja Von Rolland Jones recorded his first sack of the season and ninth of his career.
