1 NESA Awards 2013 Welcome to the NESA Awards newsletter. This issue is dedicated to all the students, staff and partners who have helped to make this year another record breaking year for sport at TyneMet College. We are immensely proud that we had the most students from any North East College representing the region at this year s National Finals held at Bath University and that TyneMet received the award of BCS College of the Year for the North East region. At the awards, it was extremely rewarding to hear about the success of so many NESA students and get an understanding of what they have achieved over the course of this year. Hopefully this issue will showcase the talent, hardwork and dedication demonstrated by the students over the duration of the year. We wish those students moving on into the next stage of their career all the very best and hope that they reflect positively on their time in NESA. Thanks again to all our key partners and stakeholders who have helped to create and develop some outstanding sporting opportunities for the students at TyneMet College. Congratulations to everyone on another successful year. See you at pre-season training! The NESA Team.
2 TyneMet Students are top of class Recently 12 students from TyneMet College were selected to undertake a 1 st 4Sport qualification that has been designed by the National Charity StreetGames. The students were put through 6 gruelling days of learning involving both theory and practical activities in the build-up to the assessments. The course is 2 level 2 awards with 1 st 4 Sport, one in The Principles and Preparations in Coaching Sport (QCF) and the other the Multi-Skills Development in Sport (QCF). The course enables the learners to deliver multi skill activities that will enable the children they are coaching to develop their basic movement skills and generic sport skills so they have a good foundation to do any sport they choose as they grow older. The 12 students from TyneMet College all passed with flying colours and really set a great example of the learners we have here at the college. StreetGames were really impressed in the high standard of sessions delivered in the assessments and knowledge the students had at the end of the 6 days. The plan is now that these 12 young leaders will go out to practice their skills they have learnt in the community. Sarah Bennett the college sport maker who tutored the course said I was really impressed with all the students who did the course. There were some great young leaders on the course and they really did me and the college proud! We had a 100% pass rate which is fantastic so I am very happy with all of them! If you are interested in being involved in the TyneMet Coaching academy and want any more info about volunteering opportunities and sports qualifications contact Sarah Bennett at sarah.bennett@tynemet.ac.uk or alternatively come and see her in the NESA office at the CRC or the QA magazine office at the QA on Tuesdays.
3 North East Archers run a two day Have-a-go session at Tyne Met College The 15 th May 2013 started very wet for the inaugural activities of the newly formed North East Archers, based in North Tyneside, Tyne and Wear. The venue was Tyne Metropolitan College and the newly appointed College Sport Maker kindly invited us to run two days of have-ago archery, to reach those students who would not normally participate in traditional sports. The college had organised a week s programme of intra-mural recreational sports of which archery was just one activity. Students of all abilities were encouraged to participate in the programme and enjoy new activities in a friendly non-threatening atmosphere. However, there was twist! Each group came as class and friendly competition was encouraged with a prize for the best class, department and individual. As the first day was very, very, wet a gym was made available so that we could continue the shoot, the second day was much better and we set up the range outdoors. As the groups arrived you had the normal apprehension from some and the sparkle in the eye of those who thought they would split the arrow like Robin Hood and everyone in-between. Shooting six arrows with imperial scoring it became evident that for most their archery skills far out-weighed their mathematical skills. Some were just happy that they had hit the target while others were competing for the score. There was a very exciting head-to-head as two lads who had never held a bow went up against each other and both shot the perfect end of six golds. No one split an arrow! About 130 students and staff participated with a further 30 through the lunch break. There were even members of the community who use the Flex gym giving it a go while they could! It has generated a lot of interest and the college are setting up a community club which we will help to launch so that students of all abilities and staff have weekly access to archery. The highlight of the two days for Joe Brown from the NE Archers club was the excitement in the faces of the students who realised that, Yes, I can do this! Followed by, Can I do this again? Proving what a truly inclusive sport archery is.
4 TyneMet Rugby Development Players Developing Rugby in Younger Players TyneMet Rugby Development players have been out in the community this month as their own record breaking season has ended. With time being freed up as the fixtures finish the players have been helping run local events aimed at getting young children playing rugby giving them the chance to pass on their love of the game to another generation. Working with local organisations such as Northumberland RFU, Durham RFU and the Newcastle Falcons the players have been refereeing, touch judging and generally making rugby happen in the North East. The voluntary work and the attitude of the players has been superb and already the organisations are asking the players back to help out again next year! Coach Jack Lambert said, For the players this is a great chance to give back some of their spare time as training and fixtures have finished for the year. It gives the players an opportunity to gain and use skills that many workplaces are looking for whilst working with young people playing the sport they enjoy. Whether these students are looking to extend their time in education and go on to study a degree or are looking to begin their working lives these voluntary opportunities are a great way to make themselves stand out as potential candidates. The players have been superb ambassadors for TyneMet College and I have been given great feedback about the work they have done.
