ANANT MUNDRA Contesting for the post of General Secretary Games and Sports Council Proposed by: Ashish Ganvir Saurabh Srivastava Seconded by: Debdip Bhandari Swapnil Agarwal Rahul Sinha Mohit Gupta Rohit Upasani
Credentials and Achievements: Institute Badminton Team Captain GOLD medallist in INTER- IIT 10, INTER- IIT 11 Awarded Best Incoming Sportsperson GOLD medallist in UDGHOSH 10, 11, 12 Management Executive, Games and Sports Council Mission & Vision To an outside observer sports could simply be a way for people to enjoy as hobbies, but for those who play competitively, they are much more. Sports can be a fun activity amongst friends or a fierce competition among hated rivals. They can be as meaningless as a fight or as symbolic as life itself, as any passionate player can testify. A player s persona is moulded greatly by the concentration, confidence, bonds and instincts one develops through the sport. It is this immense contribution of sports to one s life that I wish to share with every member of our campus community. I envision a campus where sport is an integral part of every individual s life and where every person has a ready opportunity to experience sportsman spirit. Every small intent to play should be facilitated easily without any barrier. This vision, I wish to realize through the following broad ideas. Structure
Nutrition Plan and Nutritionist The mess food is not completely able to meet the needs of sportsmen and gym goers. Hence, I propose to appoint a part time nutritionist in the campus who will guide the students with their dietary requirements. The nutritionist would also be given the responsibility of preparing the Winter Camp Mess Menu for the Inter- IIT Contingent. Good sports nutrition helps athletes stay healthy and optimally fuel themselves so they can maximize training and conditioning. The idea of a good diet will be introduced and emphasized on campus thus: A talk/session will be organised initially to introduce the nutritionist to the campus and address any general questions After this, the nutritionist will be available for one day once a month on campus for students to consult as required. The timing and frequency will be flexible depending on response, requirement and availability Exclusive time will be given to the Gym- goers, the Jogger s club and each institute team Dietary plans will be made for student based on available food in mess and campus in general as far as possible I would also see through the proposal of a nutrition plan put up by the current sports secretary wherein team members from all sports would be given refreshments to boost their performance Permanent Horse Riding Stable The horse- riding workshop conducted in the summers received an over- whelming response and this is a clear indication of its popularity in the campus. I shall pursue the current proposal in the Institute to see it through. Two CPA trials There are certain sports which a student has never played before or has little knowledge about. So to cater to the needs of such students, I will try to hold a 2nd set of CPA trials at the start of the 2nd semester so that the interested students can participate in them depending upon their interests and if selected their CPA s would be changed.
Alumni Team Connect A lot of alumni are interested in staying connected with the teams in some form or the other. A lot of the institute money is spent on track suits provided to the Inter- IIT Sports Meet Contingent. I believe the alumni would be glad to contribute. This could be the start of the self- sustainability of the sports council. Track suit for WINTER CAMP players and Campus Community Track suits will be provided to the team members who stay back during the winter camp but aren t selected in the main team. This would serve as a token of appreciation for the hard work that they have put in throughout the year. Also, I would ensure that the track suits are made available to the general junta for sale. Registration barrier for Swimming, Pool Certain reforms could be brought about with the way registration is followed at Swimming pool and Pool table. The existing rule of registering for a minimum duration of days could be done away with, thus allowing for more participation from students who otherwise would have been reluctant to join considering the stringent rules. Gym: There is clearly a need for a bigger gym or expansion of the current gym. The construction for the new weightlifting room has begun and current weightlifting room would be used for the same. Besides, new and better charts about different exercises would be put up. FESTIVALS AND TOURNAMENTS Inferno I propose the following changes in the Inter- Hall Sports Festival Individual games like badminton, squash, tennis and table tennis would be held as individual tournaments and not in the Inter- IIT format. Based on their performance in these matches, players would be ranked at the Institute Level. This I believe would involve more number of students from each pool and increase competition level in these sports Water- polo and swimming events would be included in Inferno I plan to include chess, carom, taekwondo and pool as a part of Inferno as I believe that it is not only the Inter- IIT Sports which should be given priority
Participation certificates would be given to each player who takes part in WEIGHTLIFTING to encourage people to explore the sport Before start of Inferno, workshops would be conducted in sports like WEIGHTLIFTING, ATHLETICS and HOCKEY to increase participation. Also plan to have one PG Co- ordinator to oversee problems faced by the PGs. Team sports like HOCKEY, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, VOLLEYBALL and CRICKET would be held in the same format as in the previous edition. ATHLETICS and WEIGHTLIFTING would also be held in same format. Girl s Inferno: Spardha As of now, there is no institute level event separately for girls to showcase their sporting talent. Thus, a new event for girls would be held alongside Inferno wherein as many sports possible would be held. All sports in inferno as well as more indoor games like carom, TT etc. will be given importance. Wherever possible matches would be conducted between GH1 and GH2. Leagues IFL has been very successful and has gained a lot of enthusiasm and popularity among the campus community. Hence, on the same lines I propose new leagues in team sports. This league would run parallel with the IFL. PG League - Impulse The PG halls would be divided into different pools. The team composition would consist of having a mixture of PG Freshers and PG Seniors. This would help in exploring new talent and at the same time also act as a platform for the PG Freshers to interact with their Seniors. Josh I plan to hold CHALLENGE MATCHES in JOSH where in any player/team can challenge another player/team with their consent. I will ensure that the website is uploaded as early as possible. I will ensure one PG Co- ordinator in JOSH to oversee problems faced by the PGs. Departmental Matches To encourage inter and intra- departmental interaction, I will try to hold inter- departmental matches. These matches would be held as and when convenient, depending on the availability of the teams.
CLUBS JOGGER S CLUB I propose this new club with an aim to increase fitness levels of the campus community. Hence, I want to build a platform for people who want to start running but need some help and company would like to run but are lazy to go out on their own who are already running but are looking for company and motivation So, every week twice a day, a trained runner will accompany the group and guide them with warm up, running, cooling down and stretching exercises. A running programme testing your fitness level and progress with regular tests will be put in place. If possible this can be extended to incorporate three different levels- beginners, intermediate and advanced (cross country, marathons etc.) Adventure Club Sessions on wall climbing by trained professionals will be organized. Depending on the response, feasibility of a full time instructor will be thought upon. I will encourage the club to organize more leisure trips to increase participation from campus junta. Taekwondo Club The club activities like self- defence workshops etc. will be well publicized and will push for the conduction of district or state level tournaments. It will also be included in Inferno. Chess Club The players will be encouraged to participate in local tournaments and college fests to keep them motivated. It will also be a part of Inferno to groom talent within the institute. I will also explore the possibility of collaborating with other IITs to hold an inter college Chess Tournament. Skating Club I will push for the inclusion of Roller Hockey in Udghosh. Will press for more skates to cater to the increasing demand in the institute.
THE COUNCIL AND STUDENTS Sports Committee At present the sport secretaries of each hall work independently of the Games and Sports Council which leads to a lack of understanding/communication between the two. I will form a Sports Committee which would include the sport secretaries of each hall. This will provide a platform for the Sports secretaries of each hall to interact with each other and the Gen Sec directly. Sports Awards To appreciate the sincerity and efforts put in by the players who miss out on the INTER- IIT teams, I will discuss with all captains the possibility of recognising their efforts and rewarding them with suitable awards. Summer Camp trials for a week As it is among one of the crucial phases for team building for any sport, it is important that the best of the lot are selected not just on the basis of their talent but also on the basis of determination, punctuality and commitment. Hence the trials would be held for a week so that the interested players go through the regular grind that the INTER- IIT players go through and thus get a feel of the demands of the game. Finally the best among them would get through thus ensuring a good pool of players. Informal Games I will push for the introduction of Foosball Tables in NEW SAC. I will also try to organize events like Sitoliya, Gilli Danda, Dodge Ball on some weekends through which we can relive our childhood memories. Hall of Fame Have photographs of the INTER- IIT contingent, Institute Blues and some defining moments of the sporting history at IIT Kanpur. These would be at display in the New Indoor Sports Complex for everyone and would inspire the sporting community to attain higher levels of glory. Sports Calendar Sports calendar would be made in advance with the help of other General Secretaries to avoid clashes. The calendar would help both participants and organizers in the planning and preparation for the events well in advance.
Council Website Work on the council website has been long pending and I plan to actively take it forward by incorporating the following features: Details on all available institute facilities Data on all sports and clubs, their history, profile of the team players and their achievements Information regarding sports scholarships Information regarding all competitions, events and workshops Online feedback and grievance redressal system Important contacts INTER IIT AND INSTITUTE TEAMS Practice Matches It has been experienced in the past Inter- IITs that we lose out in close games. Hence, to improve team temperament I would encourage all teams to take part in local tournaments and invite quality teams in the run up to Inter- IIT. It will be the responsibility of the team members to keep track of the tournaments going on in the nearby regions. Also, the possibility of having leagues in all sports would be discussed and if possible implemented to create a competitive sporting environment. Gym Equipment for Inter-IIT teams I will try to provide all teams with basic gym equipment like dumbbells, weight plates, rods etc. so that they need not visit the gym for basic gym exercises. Inter-IIT Team Interaction During INTER- IIT s it is important for contingents to turn up in huge numbers to support their teams as during important matches this turns out to be a crucial factor. Hence more efforts would be made so that there is greater interaction between teams, so that by the start of INTER- IIT the teams live and play like one unit. Supporting Teammates All the Captains would be instructed to look after the academic progress of their respective players. The senior players in the team could help out the youngsters with their Resume, Intern preparation and also have GD workshops. These steps would help in team bonding and motivation level.
