1 NORTH CANBERRA BEARS MINOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB PO Box 7244 KALEEN ACT 2612 Web: Welcome to the Bears 2010 As we kick-off into Round 3, I thought it appropriate to mention a little housekeeping in preparation of the games. Although as Bears, we have claws, apparently they are not a necessity to play football with. Please ensure that your child s nails are cut prior to the game. The referee will not allow players to play with nails that appear over the finger tip. For the younger children, its easier if they come to the field ready to run on the paddock; dressed in shorts, sox and footy boots. Tracksuit pants and jumpers can be worn until the child is warmed up before running into the field. Don t forget your mouth guard and head gear. The age old question all parents ask: If it s raining do we train? & If it s raining is there a game??? Please contact your coach/manager. It s easier for you make one call and contact your coach/manager than it is for your coach/manager to make 15 calls. If in doubt, please, give your coach/manager a shout. This includes if you won t be attending training or the game. DO WE HAVE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS? If you are not receiving SMS s or s from your coach it could mean many things... above all, it could mean your coach doesn t have your details. ENSURE YOUR COACH HAS YOUR CONTACT DETAILS & THAT YOUR CONTACT DETAILS ARE CORRECT. Team Photos have been scheduled and we need to make sure that your child s name is spelt correctly. Please check that your coach/manager has the correct spelling for your child s name. If there is an incident, on or off the field, and you cant/don t want to approach your coach/manager, please do call or myself. Together we can tackle the problem. Merchandise: the Bears have tracksuits, polar fleece jumpers and polo shirts for sale contact Boxy or Marty details on page 2. All Coaches & Managers are to complete team lists, please ensure that your coach and manager know how to spell your child s name! GGRROUUNDSS SSEETT UUPP Each team whose game commences at 9am has been asked to provide two representatives from their team to assist setting up the grounds. There are 3 fields (mini, mod and international) to set up. It doesn t take too long to coordinate. You will be assisted by the grounds-set-up-army, and, on completion, will be awarded with a free coffee. We ask that you come to the home ground at Ashburton Ovals at 7.30am to help. Same goes for the reversal at the end of the day. The teams who play the final games on their respective field are asked if they too can provide support to the grounds pack-away-army and assist packing down the fields. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK Grounds set up this week Round 3 Under 8 s Ground pack away this week Round 3 Under 13 s CCAANTTEEEEN Leesa is no stranger to the club, and this year has taken on the Canteen Coordinator job. The Canteen; on cold days is a popular place to be (the pie warmer and coffee machine are quite warm and inviting!). Rostered on this week Round 3 Under 14 s. Families are asked to provide assistance in serving hot food and beverages, throughout the whole day. You are not expected to be working in the canteen when your child is playing on the field. The canteen is only small, and to be honest, anymore than 3 people in that little room can be quite squishy, but please, drop by and say hi to the troops in the canteen and offer some assistance, even if you re not rostered on. NEEWSSLLEETTTTEERR The Bear Beat Newsletter welcomes your input. Newsletter contributions, including photos, can be sent to northcanberrabears@hotmail.com for inclusions. Remember, it doesn t have to be up to the Manager or Coach to write a report, if you see something spectacular then we all want to read about it! If you want your own column me and we ll see what we can do. I look forward in keeping you up to date with the Bear Beat Newsletter. 4 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR TEAM UUNDEERR 66' 'ss See you at the game Training Thursday only 5.30pm 6.30pm - Diamantina Cheers from Coach Rossco Ross UUNDEERR 77' 'ss Round 3 we take on the Queanbeyan Blues at Wright Park, see you there! Training - Wednesday only 4.30pm pm - Ashburton Thanks Peter UUNDEERR 88' 'ss The Under 8 s had an excellent away win, 28 to 4, against the Gungahlin Bulls Gold Defence was the key this week and well done to every player for listening at training. The boys moved up in a straight line and worked as a team. Special mention to James, Chris and Jed, who led the way with outstanding tackles. Our attack still needs a lot more work, in spreading out and getting organised, and this will be a focus at training this week.. The boys were still able to score 5 tries, so maybe the coach is being little harsh. New players, Zak and Andre, had their first games of the season and fitted into the team really well and played great. Also new player Liam, playing in only his 2nd game, was able to score a try. Next week, we are at home against another Gungahlin Bulls team, the Whites. Training Saturday 2pm-3pm GO BEARS! Ian

5 UUNDEERR 99' 'ss ROUND 2 Nth Canberra Bears (44) v Queanbeyan Kangaroos (0) What another fantastic game. You all stuck to the game plan which was great. However even though it was a convincing win we still showed areas that we need to improve on. I would like to see the team using the whole field to spread out and also giving our less experienced players a run of the ball. We will need to spend a bit more time at training practising spreading out around the ruck area and giving our first receiver more room to off load the ball, we also need to improve our speed when we are moving up in defence to increase pressure on the opposition. Over all it was a great game. Walt had an exceptional game (yet again) and Bodhi was great (his speed is incredible). We saw Dean, Tom, Ronin and Jarrod (just to name a few) tackling and bringing even the biggest Roos players down. Nathan, JD, Bodhi, Jake S and Walt (just to name a few) all made great runs and were offloading to other players with accuracy which was great to see. I think Deano needs to give himself a pat on the back for his amazing run which saw him running with at least 6 Roo's players hanging off him and he still was making metres. Good work. We've got a tougher match this week against Queanbeyan Blues, so let s keep up the good work and let s hope we get another win under our belts. Our man of the match this week was Bodhi. Well done Training - Tues & Thurs Diamantina Well Done & THANK YOU! Ben UUNDEERR 1100 ss BBLLAACCKK ROUND 2 V s Knights (My mistake they weren t the Buffaloes!) What a glorious mothers day! After a mockery of the coach s shoes and my first mother s day wish for the morning, some of the boys came up with player nicknames and we psyched ourselves up for the game. We had a bench of just 1, so there was minimal room for error. We were lead on the field by Captain Nick who played outstanding all game! Nick equaled the top of the tackle count this week, stopping the Knights from putting additional points on the board, and he made outstanding runs, gaining us great field length; including the time he took the ball along the sideline heading for the try line. He was tackled, but managed to fight off the defensive team and stay in the field of play for a quick play the ball. Doodles (Jarred) scored the only points for the Bears this week, first scoring from dummy half and kicking the ball over the black dot for a successful conversion and then ploughing through the defensive barrier to cross over the line in the second half. He also shared the top tackle count, performing textbook single-handed tackles; tackling one guy over the side line and you all know what that means... we get possession of the ball, of course. With Mark in dummy half and Liam by his side as first receiver, a quick play the ball seen the team working together in unison. Ethan caught the fast pass and took the ball running, powering across the field and breaking the Knights defensive line, making them come and chase him down, Ethan ran so fast yet came shy of the try line. A second quick play-the-ball to Carsey (Jack) in dummy half who, with quick thinking, tried so hard to score, but couldn t ground the ball with 6 defenders in front of him, and his try was disallowed (unlucky Carsey)! This is brilliant thinking for our boys and evidence of great team work! Our chase from kick off was very clever this week, proving we were very hungry for the ball and we can get what we want (- that ball!)! We kicked a line-drop-out and The Duke (Lucas) made a huge run, powering through the defensive team, chasing that ball to the very end, he jumping on the ball so that the Bears could have possession, this man is a machine. Hoo-ha (Hayden) chased the ball from kick-off in the first half and was too fast and too tricky for the Knights also coming up with possession. Hoo-ha (Hayden) himself kicked-off the ball in the second half and Carsey (Jack) chased that ball into a field of attackers, jumping on the loose ball and not letting go, again possession for the Bears. Nancy (Dante) wasn t on the field for long in the first half, replacing a blood nose, but his time on the field was valuable when he jumped on a lost ball again possession for the Bears! Nancy (Dante) took the ball from the first receiver in the second half and tried with all his might to cross the try line, but the Knights defence proved to be too powerful on this occasion. We had a few misses and a few more unlucky s this game, but we are proving to be a mighty mighty team.

6 Mighty Mark played a full 40 minutes, and was in the play all of the time, defending and attacking the whole game, this seen him earn the Most Improved award this week, his never say die attitude and just get in there and have a go is something that we can all learn from. OMG! How can I forget Warbo (Sam)? Warbo got that ball and made a run for it, I was sure he was going to cross that try line, it was an excellent effort, he held that ball and ran like the wind, keeping the ball close to his chest, weaving his way through the pack. It was great to watch! And the tackles! WOWEE! These three newbies had their Weetbix this morning and came ready to play footy! Chook, Zeke and Sam, well done guys, welcome (back) to football! The Knights might have put 20 points on our 10, but they had to fight for every single one of them, mostly scoring from the 5th tackle. This just proves how good our defence can be. Carsey, you scared me this game! I cringed each time you went in for a tackle or made a good run; all because the first thing you told me on game day was I forgot my mouth guard! That s your responsibility dood; keep it in your kit bag. Last thing I want to tell Mum and Dad is the tooth fairy s coming to visit, because YOU forgot your mouth guard! I am looking forward to the next game against Queanbeyan Blues; let s see what we can get out of training this week. Let s go Bears & remember training well = playing well! 7 UUNDEERR 1100 ss RREED ROUND 2 Norths 38 Buffaloes 8 What a great game to watch, not for the scoreline, but for the way the team played together. Unlike the first game where everyone wanted to do everything themselves, the team played as a team. It was so good to see the new players play so well along side the veterans. Bring on the Roos!! 8 UUNDEERR 1122 ss ROUND 2 Bears 34 def Queanbeyan Kangaroos 0 Jese Smith-Shields 3, Dylan Parker 2, Jason Davey & Mack Hansen tries Ryan Cannon, Brad Box & Tom Halls goals On Mothers day the boys were out to impress their mums!! Impress they did with a try in the first couple of minutes scored by our Captain Jese. The boys continued on their impressive start in defence for the year with two, three and sometimes four players involved in each tackle. This attitude in defence put plenty of pressure on the Roo s who were unable to make any real ground. Only two weeks into the season and the boys are showing commitment that we hope will continue throughout the year. The offloading and quick hands to the backs gave them a chance to shine as this was where all the tries were scored. Special mention to a few players today: Pawan, for his safe hands from kicks and commitment in his defence. Matthew, for his strong tackling and running in the forwards when put there at the last minute. Ryan, for his safe play at fullback. Sunday Game V s Gungahlin Bulls (last years runners up) at 9.45am be there 9.00am!!! Training times starting this week Tuesday 5.00PM -6.30PM & Thursday 5.00PM-6.00PM Great work team Keep it up!!! Luke UUNDEERR 1133 ss Home game this week and we re on pack up duty Training - Tues & Thurs Cheers, See you all at the footy TANYA , BILL (HOME) Diamantina UUNDEERR 1144 ss ROUND 2 Bears 6 vs Bulls 14 Tries Zac 1 Goals Willy 1 RReeppoorrtt Defence: Awesome Ball Handling: Crap Thanks Boxy and Daz

9 PS: We probably should elaborate a little more. UUND EERR 1144 ss RReeppoorrtt CCoonntti innuueedd Yes our defence was the best we have seen in a long time with some huge hits from Zac, Willy and most of all Kirk, who continues to impress with yet another big hit taking the opposition player over the sideline as they looked certain to score. On the other end of the scale our ball handling was up there with the worst we have seen in a long time. We did not complete a single set of six, not one. Being mindful though that my impression of our ref was that he was about the same standard as our ball handling, but you must play to his rules. We did bring some positives out of the game apart from the big defence and that was the boys showed some great spirit and camaraderie through adversary and in a spiteful encounter they stuck together and shouldered arms when the going got tough. A big improvement from dropping our heads when we get behind on the board. The forwards were running in pairs and the backs were trying different plays when we weren t moving up the field which shows the boys are starting to think about their game plan. All in all, not a bad game except for when we had the ball, so I guess with a little more attention to detail at training hopefully the boys can iron out these little errors. Bring on the Sharks next week and we will see how we fair against our arch enemies from Melba Once again Thanks Training TUES AND THUR Boxy Daz UUNDEERR 1155 ss At Nicholls V the Bulls!
