We are very proud of the array of opportunities we are able to offer as a PE department and we would encourage all students to get involved in as many extracurricular activities as they can during their Maiden Erlegh lives. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive yet successful school when it comes to sport. All students are welcome at all of our practices and we strive to enable all students to represent the school. If you have any questions regarding the year ahead, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Finally, we would like to congratulate all of our Year 11 GCSE and Year 13 A Level PE students on their results and hard work over the duration of the course. 3 Student Sporting Success Congratulations to former Maiden Erlegh pupil Jade Bradley who over the summer signed for Portsmouth Football Club Ladies. She featured for them heavily during pre-season and has a great opportunity to establish herself as a regular first teamer this season. Congratulations to Year 12 student Olivia Francis who won the 1 metre individual event at the National School Showjumping Championships during the Summer holidays, representing Maiden Erlegh School! She was one of 16 who made it through to the jump off and they jumped a foot perfect jump off to claim the gold. Year 10 Emma Ward was in action over the summer break for her cheerleading team Platinum Allstars at the recent Future Cheer Nationals Here are some great photos of her in action. Former Maiden Erlegh student Rachel Newborough is now plying her trade in the United States of America. The Northern Ireland senior international last season represented Doncaster Belles in the second tier of women s football, but has transferred to Boston College on a scholarship to complete her Masters degree! Very best of luck Rachel.
Rosella Ayane is another former Maiden Erlegh student who has recently signed for a new professional football team. Over the summer she made the switch to Bristol City Women s and has also featured on multiple occasions during their preseason campaign. We would like to wish her the very best of luck for what should be a very challenging season. Tom McIntyre who as a former student was one of our special guests at our annual Sports Personality Awards Evening in July, was recently selected for the Scotland U21 national team for their European qualifiers against Andorra and the Netherlands. Well done to Year 10 Bilal Rashid who successfully gained his 1st Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate this July. He continues to train at his Shotokan Karate club on a weekly basis, and often assists with the training for the lower levels. He's a great role model for his peers. Keep up the good work.
Sports Prefects Team We are happy to introduce you to our Sports Prefects Team for this academic year. This students all applied for the roles on the team and were selected to represent the PE department in their specialisms and to assist with the running of school sports events. They met for the first time on Thursday 6 th September and we are very much looking forward to seeing the good work that they do over the course of this year. If your son/daughter is in Year and would like to support the PE department in anyway, please tell them to come and get in touch with Miss Chapman or Mr Pringle.
Student Sporting Profile Yr13 Phoebe Fletcher Sports Captain Sport has always been something I have really enjoyed, particularly team sports. Whilst I was in primary school I did many sports including swimming, hockey, football and netball. I took part in most of them at school, and played hockey at Sonning Hockey Club until I begun rowing. I also played rugby and hockey at Maiden Erlegh. I especially enjoyed the competitiveness of them and being able to try a new sport like rugby was great! We ended up becoming Berkshire and U18 South East England Champions which was amazing! In year 8, I took part in a rowing summer camp and loved the sport so decided to join Henley Rowing Club. The first two seasons were mainly about building our technique and racing experience. As we moved into J15 and J16 (under 15 and 16) the competition and training got harder. We trained 6 times a week which was challenging, particularly when GCSEs begun but it was also very rewarding! Despite these 4 previous seasons being fun and successful, this past season has been the best- The Fours Head of the River Race was the first major event. We won in the coxed four and some of my team mates won in the quad, making it the 3rd year in a row where Henley RC won both Girls events. We continued to train hard, and in February we competed at the Women s Eights Head of the River Race, Schools Head of the River Race and Oarsport Junior Sculling Head where we got three national golds in the same week and set a course record at Schools Head. It was definitely a highlight of the season! In May, we competed at the National Schools Regatta, a race we had worked towards all season, where we managed to win the Championship Girls 8s event, which was my best moment from the season, and get a bronze in the Championship Girls Coxless 4s event. We stayed in the same four for Henley Women s Regatta, but we had a cox. We got knocked out in the final which was gutting but it was still good experience. Henley Royal Regatta was another highlight of the season and involved having to switch from sweeping, with one blade, to sculling, with two blades. We qualified and made it to the quarter finals which we were very pleased with! Towards the end of the season we got back in a four and trialled for the England Rowing Team. We were selected to race in Cork at the Home International Regatta. It was a great experience, coming 2nd to Scotland and getting to meet new people! It was an incredible year and hopefully we can do it again this season! Sporting heroes: My team mates at rowing, especially the girls in the older years who go onto university and senior rowing. Being able to see what they can achieve is inspiring.
The PE Department During the school summer holidays PE s Mr Bryant travelled to Italy for a weeklong training camp with the Polish National rugby team. After impressing during the training camp he was then selected to represent Poland in a friendly fixture against Rovigo. Well done Mr Bryant, we look forward to seeing if you get selected in the future for the championship fixtures or 7s tournaments! In October half term, PE s Miss Chapman & Mr Pringle are taking on the challenge of climbing the three tallest peaks in England, Scotland & Wales in 24 hours. They are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge to raise vital funds for a local disability sport charity SportsAble. If you are able to sponsor them for their efforts, they would be incredibly grateful!
Local Sporting Opportunities New Kit Thank you to KitWorld who have sorted out our new rugby and football kits for the new term. We look forward to seeing these in action very soon!
