ST IVES SCHOOL SPORTS ROUND-UP SPRING TERM 2018 YEAR 8 FOOTBALL CUP RUN With another packed schedule of sports fixtures, the St Ives students have been busy despite the atrocious weather conditions. Although a number of fixtures had to be called off, there has still been plenty of sports success. Read on to find out more... YR 8 FOOTBALL CUP RUN It could not have been closer! In the 5 th round of the ESFA Small Schools Cup the year 8 team travelled all the way to Wiltshire to face Cranborne Middle School. In windy and wet conditions, the boys played superb football, pressing and challenging the opposition throughout the match. Two well deserved goals from Andrew Simpson and Charlie Thornton made it level at the end of regulation time. Ten nervous extra time minutes could not break the deadlock; (the St Ives team had a goal disallowed, which was very worthy of debate). Once again the boys went in to a penalty shootout and again Harrison Goodman made a great stop to keep the dream alive. However, lady luck was against us, and when the ball rolled off the spot just as the final kick was taken to cause a scuffed St Ives shot, the Cranborne team celebrated a very narrow victory. The St Ives team were absolutely superb in their conduct and quality of play and should be proud of a fantastic achievement the final 32 in a national competition.

GIRLS RUGBY FESTIVAL SUCCESS Following on from the development of girls rugby within the curriculum, St Ives School organised a rugby festival for U13 and U15 girls against all the other Penwith Schools. The festival was designed to provide the girls with an opportunity to play competitive rugby in a supportive setting and to continue to drive their enthusiasm for the game. St Ives fielded a huge squad of 26 players, testament to the enjoyment the girls have found for the game. The atrocious conditions could not dampen their spirits as the girls took on Mounts Bay, and Humphry Davy in the muddiest and wettest matches played this year! Both our teams played brilliant rugby with organised rucks and superb support play, which led to countless trys for both our teams. Phil Morris from the RFU who supported the event, commented on the improvement in the quality of their play they are confident taking the ball into contact, and they are playing several phases of possession. Thank you to Miss Averill for organising the competition, to Phil Morris and Mr Jones for refereeing, Miss Horam and Mr Stevens for coaching and support and to Mounts Bay and Humphry Davy for playing in dreadful weather. GIRLS FOOTBALL The year 7 girls had an excellent performance in their 7 a side tournament at Mounts Bay Academy. The girls started really well with a 2-0 win over Cape Cornwall. Maddie Barrett was fearsome as a lone striker and scored two fantastic goals. Ella Redondo Barter also had a great performance in goal throughout the tournament. The girls lost to Mounts Bay 3-0 in the 2 nd game but put up a performance full of commitment all the way up to the final whistle. Well done girls! FOOTBALL COUNTY CUP The year 8 boys had a fantastic result in the first round of the Cornwall County Cup wining 4-0 against Cape Cornwall School. It what can only be described as difficult conditions the wind at St Just made for some unique challenges which the boys stood up to really well. With Josh, Jobe, Andrew and Sam getting on the score sheet it was a real team performance. The boy s great attitude was also shown in their ability to mix up positions and formations to make sure that everyone got a game and didn t get to cold! Onto the next round we go! The Yr 9 side had a bye in the first round and are due to face Helston in round two. GIRLS CRICKET GETS A BOOST St Ives School are part of the Chance to Shine Cricket programme, designed to promote and develop cricket, especially to players new to the game. Craig Williams, a cricket coach from the Cornwall Cricket Board has been in to run taster session with our Years 7 and 8 girls groups. Craig has introduced the girls to batting and bowling using a softer ball for indoor cricket. The year 8 girls have also taken part in an indoor competition against the other Penwith Schools and experienced their first taste of a new team sport.

TRAMPOLINES ARRIVE AT LAST Following our successful Sports England Bid, our two new trampolines have arrived, and make a superb addition to the PE facilities on offer to our students. The competition quality beds are far more powerful than any domestic trampoline and provide a great challenge for the students to develop their gymnastic skills. That was so much fun, can t believe how high you go, were comments heard from the BTEC sport students, the first to test out the new equipment. Trampolining will now be offered as part of the Year 10 and 11 PE programme and is also available to all students on Mondays at 3.15 at trampolining club.

FOOTBALL VS MOUNTS BAY Both the Year 8 and Year 9 boys were celebrating wins on Wednesday evening after beating close rivals Mounts Bay in two friendly matches. Jobe Upton was man of the match for the Year 8 s scoring twice with quality finishes to steal a 2-1 victory for St Ives. The Year 9 game was a close affair with Mounts Bay pressing every counter attack. However, Nate Friedberg settled the nerves with the first goal on his debut for the Year 9 side. The match swung from end to end but in the second half, two goals from Asa Donaldson and Archie McTeare sealed a 5-3 win. CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS On Saturday 20 th January St Ives were once again well represented at the Cornwall Cross Country Championships. Miss Horam s coaching has clearly paid off with great runs from Will Stirling and Aaron Perry. Congratulations go to Freya Perkin, Kezia Elliot, Aaron Perry and Will Stirling who have qualified for the Cornwall t eam to run at Exeter in the regional competition. MORE FOOTBALL SUCCESS The year 8 boys continue their great season with a county cup win over Penair, taking them through to the quarter fnals. To prepare for this fixture against Penryn College, the boys had a friendly against Cape Cornwall and secured a comfortable win, playing some of the best football seen this far. Superb first touch passing, constant movement off the ball and a very solid defence mean the team are playing with real confidence. Jack Stewart and Jack Kevern named as men of the match and also a great performance from Dan Organ, playing his first school team fixture.

OTHER SPORTS NEWS After a brilliant cross country run at Newquay on Saturday at the county championships, Will Stirling found the energy to compete in a 2 day ( Saturday and Sunday) SW England Regional boys U12 tennis event at Plymouth and ended up gaining a 5th place result. Pretty amazing as he was competing against the strongest U12 boys in the region great result Will. Riley Bird took part in a Cornwall Gymastics competition in February. It was an all boys floor and vault competition, held at Swallows gymnastics club in Helston. The top six in each category qualified for the Cornwall Boys Squad and will compete in a regional two day competition in Barnstaple in April. Riley achieved 4th place in vault, 3rd place in floor and 3rd place overall. Still being very much a beginner in this sport, he is extremely proud of his achievement, as are we. GYMNASTIC SUCCESS Congratulations to Freya Perkin who came 5 th on Sunday 4 th March in the Cross Country Westward League at Redruth School. Great work Freya! Josh Potter won his lightweight boxing match on Saturday 10 th March against a tough competitor from out of county. Josh won on points after going the full three rounds. Josh boxes for Penzance and is making real progress so far this season well done Josh!

Sam McGuigan is now back from the Samonte Cup/ Ultimate Kickboxing Challenge in Germany. The great news is that he won 2 Golds, a silver and a bronze amazing results in an international competition. He also tried out a new discipline called Low Kick which is like Muay Thai and by all accounts was winning by a mile. However his competitor kept fouling him by going for Sam s shins which unfortunately resulted in Sam being taken to hospital by Ambulance! However, Sam is already back in training a superb example of resilience, and determination to succeed. Lewis Williams has competed in the CCASA County Championships over the last two weekends in a total of 11 races! His hard work, determination and commitment to hours of gruelling training have truly paid off as he has become County Champion after winning Gold medals in 100m & 200m Individual Medley, 100m & 200m Breaststroke, 100m & 200m Freestyle. In addition, he also won 2 Silver medals in 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke with a Bronze medal in 50m Butterfly. An amazing achievement - Congratulations Lewis! If your child has been successful in sports events outside school, please let us know so we can recognise and celebrate their achievements.
