Lesson 2- Settling New England

Imagine you are the leader of a club at school. With your team, come up with rules for your club in order to make sure your club is successful. At the top of your poster write the name of your club. Then, number your rules! Everyone should contribute at least one rule. What happens if a club member breaks a rule? What are the consequences?

Puritans In lesson 1, we learned that the Pilgrims were forced to leave England because they were being persecuted for their religious beliefs. Like the Pilgrims, the Puritans also disagreed with the Church of England and faced persecution. Who treated the Puritans especially bad in England? What did the Puritans form as a result?

Cause and Effect King Charles I did not like that the Puritans were calling for change in the Church. So, a group of wealthy Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Company and got a charter from the King to sail west to North America!

Puritan Villages The Puritans arrived in Massachusetts in They called their first settlement Boston. Elected John Winthrop as their governor. When the Puritans arrived, they began setting up their villages. In your textbook, highlight what all villages contained.

Puritan Villages Puritan children helped their parents a lot when the settlers first arrived in Boston. Puritan settlements made each family make a covenant with the church. Covenant- contract. If families did not follow Puritan rules, they were forced to leave the community.

New England Expands People grew tired of following the strict Puritan rules. Leaders like John Winthrop worried about losing control of the villagers. Many people left to form new settlements. Tyrant- someone who uses power cruelly or dictates the rules. Tolerate- to allow something to be or be done without trying to stop it.

Founding Rhode Island Rogers Williams was the first to leave the Puritan tyrants behind. He felt the government should tolerate all religious views. After he left, Roger Williams met Native Americans that helped him survive the winter. He bought land from the Natives and called the land Providence. What is special about Providence, Rhode Island? Highlight it in your textbook!

Founding Rhode Island Who is Anne Hutchinson? What did she do?

Founding Connecticut Thomas Hooker left Puritan villages for new farmland. In 1636, he led his followers to the rich soil of the Connecticut River Valley. They called the new settlement Hartford.

Make an inference Go back and underline the reasons Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson, and Thomas Hooker left their Puritan settlements. What does this tell you about Puritan leadership? How is this hypocritical?

The Pequot War and King Philip s War Pages 118 and 119 of your textbook discuss The Pequot War and King Philip's War. Why were these two wars fought? How did each war end?

Diary entry Pretend you are either a Native American or a colonist during the time colonists were settling the New England colonies. Write a paragraph in which you try to convince the other side why you are fighting in either the Pequot War or King Philip s War. Convince them to back down from their fight!
