Sport Report, Week 3, Term 4 Mountain Bike Riding 2016 has seen the introduction of Mountain Bike Riding to BAS Sport. Mr Matt Taylor has been kind enough to take the boys out to Mt. Clear Secondary College every Tuesday night for the next five weeks to learn and compete. Results from the first week were as follows. Year 7/8 Individual: 1st Alex Murphy MCC 2nd Liam Carroll MCC 3rd Cooper Krezlik MCC Team (first 4 riders): MCC 16 laps BGS 13 laps DC 12 laps SPC 10 laps Year 9/10 Individual: 1st Spencer Bedggood DC 2nd James Peters MCC 3rd Liam Parkinson MCC Team (first 4 riders) MCC 20 laps DC 12 laps BGS 14 laps SPC 5 laps MTB State Finals Bendigo has enjoyed a weekend full of great racing as school students from across Victoria descended upon the state s north-west for the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships finals. Run across one weekend for the third time ever, the three-day event offered students the unique opportunity to compete in BMX, MTB and road racing. On Saturday October 14, Spring Gully Reserve was the place to be on the middle day of competition, as mountain bikes replaced BMX bikes.
St Patricks College picked up a one-two finish in the under 15s male novice race, as brothers Lachlan and Nicholas Huf couldn t be split. The boys competed in a 9.9km circuit for 3 laps, with Lachlan coming in first place closely followed by Nicholas who finished 2 nd. With strong placings in 2 of the 3 zone finals and his first place in the State final Lachlan managed to achieve 2 nd in the Aggregate Series. We would like to congratulate both boys on an exception effort and wish them all the best for A special thank you to the parents who support their sons in their endeavours and interests and also to the event organisers Cycling Victoria in conjunction with the City of Greater Bendigo for hosting these finals. Junior Volleyball Our Junior volleyball players have started their season eagerly under the guidance of Mr. Daniel Sutton and Mrs Marg McIntyre. In the first round SPC went down narrowly to Ballarat Grammar two sets to one. Unfortunately, no other schools have entered teams in the Intermediate age group for boys volleyball. So our intermediates will play in the junior division, but not for points. Junior Tennis Inclement weather has disrupted the start of the BAS Junior Tennis season with only a small amount of play possible in the first two weeks. Hopefully the weather turns soon and the boys can get some tennis played. Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee has also been introduced into BAS Sport this year in a come and try format. SPC had fourteen boys represent the college at the Tom Brown Reserve in Sebastopol last Thursday, this will continue on a Thursday night for the next five weeks. I would encourage any interested students to jump on the bus in Wanliss Street straight after school in full PE uniform.
Football Junior Football On Thursday, October 13 the year 7 & 8 representative football team travelled to the Essendon Football Club training facility at Tullamarine to play the Maribyrnong Secondary College team. The St Patrick s boys were keen to do well against a quality opposition. The game was played in beautiful conditions on a pristine surface which ensured that the quality of football would be high. The game commenced with St Pat s gaining the first centre clearance from a Nick Stevens tap. The first goal came through Year 7 boy, Harry Sharp who capitalised on some effective ball movement finishing well to post a major. Prior to this, three scoring opportunities resulted in behinds. In the second quarter Maribyrnong capitalised on the strong breeze posting three goals and leaving the usually tight St Pat s defence in tatters. The Paddy boys, re-grouped and were able to score a goal through Nick Stevens in the second half of the quarter, keeping the St Pat s team in touch going into half time. In the third quarter, Josh Carlile-Marks was able to step up. After a spell on ball, he took up residence in the forward line and kicked two very good goals which did much to steady the ship and get St Pat s back in control of the match. In this quarter the St Pat s back line lifted with the likes of Sam Broadbent, Will Rothe, Will Clark, Ed Boyer, Declan Phillips, Rhys Perry and Isaac Carey causing the Maribyrnong forwards some headaches. Their tough accountable defensive play and uncompromising tackling provided plenty of opportunities for midfielders such as Will Liston, Finn Lappin, Cooper Bath and Siddarth Rajesh to gain possession of the ball and feed it into the forward line. With the game still in the balance going into the final quarter, assistant coach, Peter Brady suggested the move of the day, placing Sid Rajesh deep into the forward line. By the end of the quarter Sid had slotted three goals sealing the victory for the St Patrick s team. Cooper Bath maintained his high standard deep into the final quarter after sustaining a severe knock to the face in the second quarter. His attack on the football, tackling pressure and finishing skills were tremendously important in the final result, he was awarded the medal for best on ground. In the end St Patrick s run out sixteen point winners in what was a high quality display of junior football. SPC: def. Maribyrnong SC: Best: Cooper Bath, Nick Stevens, Will Clark, Sam Broadbent, Declan Phillips, Will Liston, Josh Carlile-Marks Goals: S. Rajesh 3, Josh Carlile- Marks 2, Nick Stevens, Harry Sharp.
Intermediate Football An SPC Intermediate side played Maribyrnong Sports Academy at Tullamarine Recreation Oval in fine but blustery conditions. SPC kicked with the aid of a tricky breeze in the first quarter but were unable to capitalize and wasted a number of opportunities to score. Maribyrnong Sports Academy were much more efficient going inside their forward 50 throughout the match and converted these opportunities into goals. SPC s tackling pressure was immense and the pressure and effort throughout the game was extremely impressive. Ethan McLaren was judged best afield for SPC with his excellent showing off half back. Ethan won a lot of the ball and used his possessions efficiently often bringing team mates into the game. Tom Clark was excellent in the midfield and his tackling pressure as well as his run enabled SPC to win back possession of the ball on numerous occasions. Lachie Dawson, Sam Romeril and Joel O Connell worked hard all game in the midfield. Year 9 student Izaac Grant was SPC s only goal scorer kicking 2 opportunistic goals. The backline held up well for three quarters but eventually Maribyrnong Sports Academy were able to break free in the last quarter and score more frequently resulting in a 25 point defeat for SPC. After the match the players headed back to Maribyrnong Sports Academy where they participated in various recovery strategies including ice baths, foam rollers and stretching. The day was a success and will hopefully see many of the students represent the College in the 1 st XVIII Side in the future. Warrnambool clay target event. On Monday October 10, 15 students from the college made the trip to Warrnambool to compete in the annual junior clay target championship hosted by Brauer College. This event involved students from years 7 & 8 competing in a DTL clay target competition against schools from across the region. The weather presented a challenge for the students with Warrnambool living up to its reputation with strong cross winds playing havoc with the clay targets. As a college this was the first time we have had student represent SPC at this event. Our junior students thoroughly enjoyed the competition and the day out. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the day and show great comradery in both supporting and encouraging each other throughout the day. The following list of results indicates each student s result for each round of 12 targets. 1 st round 2 nd round Total Trent Corboy Matt Devries Mitch O'Brien Matthew Simpson
Ethan Azzapardi Finley Ballinger Tom Conroy Hugh McKenzie Ash McKenzie Alex O'Brien Geordie Dickson Dylan Johns Ben Morcom-Knight Max Peterken Patrick Tyler In addition, we experienced success in the novice section with Max Peterken placing second and Mitch O Brien placing third. Well done and congratulations to all students as they represented the College in an outstanding manner in both conduct and performance. I would to thank the parents who took time out of their day to supported and encourage their son s interests in shooting, and also thank the staff who assisted with the organisation and supervision on the day. Mr. Matt Taylor Yours in Sport Gavin Webb
