1 Mayflower Archers Issue No. 10 July 2009 Inside this issue: From the Editor Junior News We re now halfway through the outdoor season and some of you have been very busy with competitions and claiming awards. This has given me quite a lot for the achievements page. Well done to those who entered some of the tournaments and the good results they won from Havering Youth Games, West Essex invitation shoot and especially the Junior National Outdoor Championships. More details on the inside pages. There are a few tournaments left so keep up the good work and give lots more to write about. The next issue should include results from Southern Counties FITA Championships at Colchester, Essex FITA, the Southern Counties target championships at Runwell and the Essex FITA Field Championships. Now there s a challenge, enter the field champs and you might spot me with a bow in my hand. Yes, mine this time. Although a competition, there were no prizes, just a chance to meet some new faces from outside the club. If you entered, did you enjoy it? It was a good chance to practice the distance for your age, shoot up a distance or just gain valuable tournament experience all for free. It was good to see that Nicole Scorah and Aaron Gourley took the opportunity to get some long range practice. Nicole even went up two age groups shooting a full Windsor round. Well done both of you and to Mayflower juniors who took part the opportunity to get some free tournament practise. Our thanks go to all who helped prepare the field, the judges and Lady Paramount for putting up with us and to the Mums, Grandmas and friends who kept us fed and watered all day long. The results, a report and two sets of photographs can be found on the club web pages. Should our arms be twisted hard enough, we may just do it all again, but in a slightly different format.

2 Tournament reports Havering Youth Games 25th April Nine members attended, had a very enjoyable day and came home with the team award, seven individual medals and James won second prize in the shoot-off. Well done Aaron, you work hard and practice regularly and there's your reward. Well done the team and without all of you, Mayflower wouldn t have had a team. Full report on our website. West Essex Junior Invitation shoot - 9th May Another Grand Day Out! Shooting National rounds again, but with no individual places, Mayflower fielded a team of five to bring home the team silver medals. Well done Sam Yeates, Alex Croft, Nicholas Johnston, Mark Robinson and Aaron Gourley. Aaron, in a fit of brilliance made top score of the day, while Mark, with a brand new release aid, never used before, made second place and improved his Havering score by a fantastic 205 points, then in the raffle, chose a West Essex Bowmen coffee mug. Hmm! I fancied that. Team results: Rayleigh 1st 2280 Mayflower 2nd 2224 Broxhill 3rd 1780 West Essex 4th 1733 Thank you all for making a team to represent Mayflower. Noak Hill Western Rounds 6th June Another good turnout for an excellent event and some good results. Alex was a little disappointed, but only got his new arrows 2 days before and hadn t had much chance to tune them. James was also disappointed with his score, but he was shooting up and age group and attained a Junior Bowman score, so well done! Ellie Vidgeon-Hart Junior Western Compound 714 Gold. We ll have to watch this guy; he s too busy enjoying himself. Page 2

GNAS July National postal tournament This is a National postal tournament where you can shoot it in the comfort of your own club. Only your best scores will be collected and sent to GNAS to be entered with other juniors around the country. The two National rounds on 18th and 25th July are an opportunity to shoot the round together. If you haven t been able to join in these National rounds or wish to improve your score, you are still able to shoot it any time you like in the remainder of July so long as a supervising senior is present and willing to sign your score sheet. If you do want to shoot it at your leisure, you may shoot as many times as you wish, but it would make it easier to administer if you used the score sheet supplied by Roger. Hand your scores to Roger or Steve and they will be sent off. Only your best score will be submitted. With any luck, results should be in October Junior News. 4 Junior National Outdoor Championships Lilleshall 4 th & 5 th July Apart from the occasional shower, the weather was kinder this year and I understand that a good time was had by all in this, the premier junior event of the year. With music supplied by GNAS and the dance routine provided by the participants, lunch breaks turned out to be very entertaining. See the clips on YouTube (JNOC Macarena dance) or use the link on You ll see Sam s Nan, and several Mayflower and Rayleigh members. Don t forget to look at the Montage as well. Essex archers put in many creditable performances on both days. Most notable was Sophie Cole, of Chelmsford Tudor Rose who was selected to represent the winning England team in the Home Nations match. Well done Sophie! Southern County Archery Society 2 nd Junior FITA Tournament 11 th July 2009 World Record Status FITA & Cadet Rounds and British Record Status Metric Rounds Hosted by Colchester and District Archery Club, Essex. Six Mayflower Juniors attended this tournament last weekend. Conditions were good for shooting and it was encouraging to see this event so well attended. The venue was CADAC ground located next to Colchester Rugby Club. Alex Croft competed in the Gents FITA and gained valuable experience by shooting this round. He knows what is takes to compete in a Gents FITA at a young age; this hopefully will put him in good stead for the years to come. Lewis Jones and Sam Yeates both competed in the Metric 2 Gents Recurve and in the end only 6 points separated them. Lewis started very strongly and in the end came away with a personal best. Nicole Scorah and Katie Ward competed in the Metric 3 Ladies Recurve after a shaky start Nicole shot steadily and Katie managed a strong performance, which was rewarded by a personal best. Aaron Gourley's hard work is paying dividends with a fine 1128 Gents Recurve Metric 3. This not only was a PB but a fine 2nd place too. Paul Kearse and the Organisation must be congratulated for bringing this first class junior event to the County. This Tournament is only in its 2nd year and was run very well indeed. Many thanks to the Judges and all at CADAC for a very enjoyable day. 6 Junior National Outdoor Championships A spectator s view Road to Lilleshall After waving off the shooting party we programmed Doris (Sat Nav) with Lilleshall, Newport. Loaded with all the tents and some chairs we began our journey. Our plan was to get there first and erect the tents before the archers arrived. After a couple of hours of a pleasant journey we decided to have a Welcome Break. A latte and a muffin later we continued on our way. Relieved we were not in the heavy traffic going in the opposite direction. Bad rain and dark clouds had not hindered us, but what we had not realized Doris had. Mountains loomed dark on the horizon, funny we did not recognise this landmark. Then we saw it, the Welcome to Wales sign. Several swear words later; we pulled over, smacked Doris and re-programmed her. You might have guessed it, we had to turn around and join the heavy traffic in the opposite lane. Still feeling optimistic we phoned Sam, only to be told they were two miles ahead of us. Our mission - to overtake them and get to Lilleshall before them. Luck was on our side Deidre (mini bus Sat Nav) had taken them twice around Telford, so we arrived ten minutes before them. So what had started off as a good intent, meant everyone putting up their own tents. A Spectators View Nothing prepares you for the sight of seventy targets, and a four-row tent city. Unbelievable. Unfortunately this year we were all separated, so bacon butties were off the menu, as delivery service could not be provided. It was not long before we could hear the shouts for scorers, so we decided on some ailments but fortunate for us we were not picked. Different story tomorrow. This year there was a more relaxed approach to the event. Music played in the interim between each ends. Judges, officials and competitors alike, danced to YMCA, Time Warp and Is This the Way to Amarillo to name but a few. It took a while for the juniors to settle in, but all seemed to be in good spirits. As roving reporter I decided to interview the juniors as to their thoughts of the day. Aaron and James thoroughly enjoyed themselves and Nicole, Katy, Sam and Alex all agreed it was a fun day, but very long and tiring. It did not go so well for Sam and Alex. But at lunchtime they joined the long line of archers and danced to the Macarena. An hour towards the end and the heavens opened up and all archers were soaked. Day Two Up early yet again, had breakfast and checked out of the hotel to arrive at Lilleshall at 8.15 am. Luck was on our side; the weather was lovely although there was a breeze. Our juniors warmed up with a flying bomb Sam had bought with him. They all seemed to be in high spirits. The shouts went up for scorers again, but we got away with it again, albeit, there were a few words, with one of the stewards. Towards lunchtime we had heard how well James was doing and he had scored a six gold end. At lunchtime all our juniors got in line with everyone else and danced to YMCA. The scorer on target 36 became ill and they could not get anyone to score so I volunteered (Big Mistake). That night ankles like balloons and the next day we both think we had sunstroke. The day finished earlier than yesterday. Tent city came down and we waited for the award ceremony, as we believed James might have got third place, which he had. Well done James. Page 6 Liz and Jane

8 FITA Beginner s Awards. Feather & Arrow Mayflower Archery Club have introduced this scheme to assist our new and existing juniors and all beginners, including adults with their development in archery. The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance. Skill. Knowledge & Know How. The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6-10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 m and even further to near 30m. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring. Feather Award Arrow Award To all juniors and adults wishing to apply for this training program please contact David Scorah by scorah1@btinternet.com Or Tel: Page 8

9 Steve & Roger s secret revealed! Several of you have heard of Steve and Roger's secret hideaway where we go to escape and do some other kind of Archery. Other Mayflower members do the same, but choose not to talk about it. It s that secret. Well, there may be a chance to move Junior Club there for just one afternoon. Should it be arranged, we will be joining Rayleigh juniors and have the opportunity to experience another branch of the sport. It will also prepare you for the Essex FITA Field Championships should you wish to enter. The proposed date for this event is Saturday 29th August and there will be a target fee of 5 each for those wishing to shoot. More details nearer the time. The format will be walking though some lovely woods in groups of 4 shooting a marked distance 12 target FITA round with some fun 3D s at the end. Parent archers are welcome to join in and parents/guardians will be required to accompany their offspring. There will be experienced field archers with each group. Here s the stinger, you will need sight marks for 10 metres up to your age distance (60m for seniors) in increments of 5 metres. Get those sight marks now. Don t worry, you won t be shooting any distance you cant manage, but please do mark your arrows with your initials. Add Mayflower if you wish. The Lilleshall Alternative. Steve is collecting names now in the hope that all goes to plan. When Mayflower juniors are away enjoying themselves at a national tournament, it means a quiet weekend at home. So what do some of the seniors do with nobody to annoy? While you were driving through the rain, we went and found ourselves a School Fete on a sunny afternoon where there were loads more people to annoy. Most said they enjoyed themselves and some even want to join the club so that means more juniors and seniors. And we managed to raise a decent cash sum for the school and the club. Yes, you can spot the usual culprits, Steve, Martin, John and Roger on bows and Mitch on camera, cash and bracers. Thanks also to David Chase for his part in the hard work of setting up and taking down. Junior Team Sub-Committee Saturday afternoons seems very quiet lately, where are you all? We do understand that the tournament season is in full swing and most of the regulars are busy entering them. You can see the results in the previous pages, but where are the rest of you? We really want to support and encourage all our junior members. Come along and join the regulars who will welcome you all. If however, you want something different or we re not making it interesting, come along and please tell the Junior Captain who will report and advide or you can tell one of us directly. Page 9
