1 EXTON VILLAGE NEWS LETTER 155 MAY 2017 Many thanks to everyone who joined the litter picking session on the morning of Saturday 8 April. Around 30 villagers, adults and children, enjoyed the fine weather clearing paths and roadsides in and around Exton. In only a few hours, around 40 bags of rubbish were collected. The action day was organised by Edward Heckels on behalf of Exton and Horn Parish Council and supported by Rutland County Council, which arranged contractors to take the rubbish away and provided litter picking grab sticks, gloves, high visibility tabards and bin liners. Annette Oliver, Clerk to the Parish Council, commented: We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Britain. Sadly, however, our countryside is spoilt by the growing spread of fast food wrappers, bottles, cans and other rubbish along the road side. The Parish Council were very happy to support the initiative of one of our residents who decided that something needed to be done and delighted by the support from villagers for the action day. June Fox, Rutland County Councillor for Exton, said: The County Council was very pleased to be able to support this local initiative. I hope that the success of the action day in Exton encourages other communities in Rutland to organise litter picking events and to clean up their neighbourhood. 1

7 Exton s Produce and Craft Show 2017 Update It is now thirty two years since the first annual Produce and Craft Show was held in Exton Village Hall. During this time there have been only two years when the Show did not take place. With the demise of the long established Street Market in 2008 and more recently the Exton Day, the annual Show is now the only long-standing event involving a cross-section of Exton Villagers, their families and pupils attending the Exton and Greetham Primary School. The envy of many local villages, the Show continues to go from strength to strength and 2016 was no exception. There were thirty-four trophies and cash prizes awarded at the Show. The Children s Section now hasten classes including a hotly contested trophy for the Best Young Baker and a special prize of a superior model kit for The Best Junior Model donated by The Rutland Scale Model Club, who meet regularly in the Village Hall throughout the year and for the first time this year mounted a fascinating exhibition of their handiwork as part of the Show. In addition to the Show itself in August, the customary Presentation Buffet was held at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel for trophy winners, their friends and family. Trophies engraved with their winners names were presented for winners to keep until it is time for the next Show to be held on Sunday 20 August

8 At the end of the year, 1, was carried forward so as to ensure there will be sufficient funds to mount the Show in 2017, even without income from the customary fund raising activities. In 2016 these included providing teas for those taking part in The Exton Day, a Summer Barbeque for Committee and friends, a small surplus from the Show itself and an auction following the Presentation Buffet. Two long-standing stalwarts of the Organising Committee: Chris Wallace and Meryl Hart, announced their retirement following many years of involvement with the organisation of the Show and their long experience and wise counsel will be sorely missed. Newcomers welcomed to the Committee in 2017 include villagers David Collins, who has taken on the role of Treasurer and Annie Allison a Member of Friends of Exton and Greetham School. We are hoping to have a plant stall to boost the funds raised, which will be donated to village groups. If you have any unwanted plants, seedlings or other garden related items for our stall, please could you bring them to either Chris Wallace at 1, The Green, or Meryl Hart at 12, Pudding Bag Lane, by Tuesday, June 13th.. 11

12 Ladies Circle - Members and visitors enjoyed a most interesting demonstration of how to plant different hanging baskets, picking up several useful tips while watching. Kevin Barker planted four varying baskets, which were then available to buy at very reasonable prices. The competition for a photo or picture of your garden was won by Meryl Hart, 2nd. Terry Connolly and 3rd. Margaret Oliver. The raffle prizes were won by Ann, Sandra and Serena. What will be happening at the May meeting has not yet been decided upon, but will be either a picnic or possibly a meal out. Once a decision has been made members will be notified. This will take place on Thursday, 4th. May. and will be the last meeting until Thursday, 7th. September when Annette Oliver will be giving a most interesting talk on her experiences of being a Judge at Crufts. The competition will be a photo of your pet cat or dog. HAS ANYONE LOST A YOUNG, GREY/WHITE / TABBY CAT? For the last three or four weeks he seems to have adopted Pudding Bag for his home. It seems several residents are offering him a bed and food and he is so very friendly. Somebody must be missing him/her surely? If anyone is looking for him, please call for information. 12

15 Services in May St Peter and St Paul Parish Church, Exton 14 th am Matins 28th am Holy Communion Morning Prayer will be said every Wednesday in the church. Everyone is welcome and the short service is about 15 minutes long. The Easter Day service was very well attended by villagers and visitors. Special thanks to Ann for organising the lilies again which looked lovely. The church is open every day if people want to see the beautiful arrangements and there is a list of donors and their loved ones in the church porch. Thanks also to Bernadette and Mark who made a very effective simple wooden cross from the trunk of the Christmas tree. Recycling at its best. Thank you also to Ed and Killoran and Georgina, Thomas, Eliza and Matilda who devised and produced an Easter sketch during the service which was much appreciated by the congregation.. Christian Aid week this year is from 14 th to 20 th May. This year the money raised will be to help refugees from the war torn areas of the world. Due to a lack of man-power we will not be distributing envelopes in the village but if you would like to donate a cheque (payable to Christian Aid) or to give cash we would appreciate it.
