4 The VolleyKats hosted the Lady Shamrocks of Westfield Thursday evening. The VolleyKats put up a good fight but fell in four sets 25-19, 25-14, 25-27, Our girls are still looking to find the right chemistry, but we did a much better job of bettering the ball and forcing Westfield to make tough plays. Our serving was much improved from our first match and we had more balls in system than our first contest. Gabby Cooper led the attack with 13 kills, two blocks, and 15 digs. Alliyah Hochstedler floored six kills on.316 hitting, and dug up 16 balls. Adria Hartley added four kills, four blocks, two aces, and 14 digs on the night, and Asijah Miller put down three balls from the MB spot opposite Hartley. Ellie Trine served three aces and dug 11 balls, while Molly Fisher also had three aces as well as six digs from the back row. Correll Heath had 25 assists and seven digs. We will get right back into the action as we host the Kokomo Invitational Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. We will play a total of four matches so it is a great chance to see some different teams from around the state. 8 Kokomo opens their 2018 football season with a trip to New Palestine. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Tonight s game is a battle between two ranked teams. New Pal is ranked third in the Associated Press and the Indiana Football Coaches Association polls, while the Wildkats are ranked eighth in both. Fans attending tonight s game are encouraged to enter the stadium off Gem Road (County Road 500W). Go south at the main light in New Pal at Gem Road and U.S. 52. The entrance will be between the Administration Building and the elementary school, which will lead you to the main parking area. Kokomo fans will be sitting on the west side of Kelso Stadium. Kokomo and New Palestine have never met on the football field. New Pal s varsity has 54 athletes, consisting of 16 seniors, 21 juniors, and 17 sophomores. Kokomo s roster has 70 players 17 seniors, 14 juniors, 19 sophomores, and 20 freshmen. Kokomo has 35 athletes returning that lettered a year ago, including 11 seniors, nine juniors, and 15 sophomores. The Wildkats return just five players who started in the state championship last season. Only two of those five are in the same starting position Javias Gray at nose tackle and Jabrian Adams at linebacker. The Dragons return nine starters on offense and eight on defense. Making his head football coaching debut tonight is Kokomo s Richard Benberry, a graduate of Warren Central and Taylor University. He has been an assistant for 17 years at Southport, Lawrence North, Guerin Catholic, Arsenal Tech, and Warren Central, where he was the line coach when the Warriors won the IHSAA Class 6A State Championship. Kyle Ralph begins his sixth season with the Dragons. He has a 60-4 (.938 winning percentage) overall record at New Pal in his first five seasons with three sectional titles, three regionals, two semi-states, and the 2014 IHSAA State Championship. Ralph is a 2002 grad of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and a 2006 grad of North Carolina, where he played football for the Tar Heels. He had NFL tryouts with the Seahawks and Panthers before the coaching bug hit. After tonight s road game with New Palestine, Kokomo will play the next three weeks in the friendly confines of Walter Cross Field against Plymouth, Marion, and McCutcheon. New Pal will play their first ever Class 6A opponent next Friday when they host two-time state champ Center Grove.

9 Steven Edwards is the Wildkats top returning rusher with 316 yards on the ground in six games. He had three rushing touchdowns. DeShawn Winston, who will start tonight in the Kokomo backfield, rushed for 89 yards in 18 carries a year ago for a 4.9 average and one touchdown. New Palestine will have three rushers that gained over 1000 yards last season. Luke Canfield rushed for 1764 yards and 29 touchdowns last year as a sophomore, quarterback Zach Neligh had 1130 yards and 13 scores on the ground, and Charlie Spegal, a move-in from Delta, had a whopping 2385 yards and 33 touchdowns for the Eagles. Canfield, who needs 104 yards rushing to reach 2000 for his career, had a 305-yard rushing effort last season against Pendleton Heights. Zach Neligh had 110 completions in 199 attempts as the Dragons QB last season. Those connections were good for 1861 yards and 22 touchdowns. He threw just seven interceptions. Neligh, whose older brother Alex preceded him as the New Pal quarterback, had a 326-yard passing night against Delta a year ago. His 22 TD passes were the sixth most in NPHS history. Levi Hrabos, the Wildkat starter at quarterback, is a transfer from Northwestern, where he was 91-of-157 through the air as a junior for 1052 yards and five touchdowns. He also threw seven picks. Steven Edwards and Noah Cameron each caught 16 passes for the Kats last season with the former gaining 377 yards and the latter 181. Edwards had six touchdown receptions and had a 168-yard night against McCutcheon. Colby Jenkins is New Pal s top returning receiver with 37 catches and 655 yards last year. He had nine touchdown catches. For his career, Jenkins has 1077 receiving yards, the fifth most ever at New Pal. Junior Maxen Hook led the Dragons last year with 69 tackles, including a season high 12 against Zionsville. Luke Ely added 63 stops in 2017, including a team high 7 ½ sacks. Ryker Large had six interceptions for New Pal. Jabrian Adams was Kokomo s leading tackler last year with 98 including 11 ½ tackles for loss. Noah Cameron had a team-leading three picks in Nose guard Javias Gray was named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association s Top 50, the first KHS player to be named to the prestigious underclassmen list.

10 BOYS SOCCER August 19, 2017 Junior Cortlandt Kalkstein and senior Alec Barreira were the Players of the Game as Kokomo opened up North Central Conference play with a 1-1 tie with the Bearcats of Muncie Central at the Wildkat pitch. Barriera scored the lone goal for Kokomo in the 73 rd minute of play. The Bearcats took advantage of a Wildkat error in the box to net a goal and take the 1-0 lead in the 24 th minute of action. It would be one of only four shots that Central had during the entire game. Coach Aaron Blessing praised his Kat team for their persistence and high pressure, which finally paid off with the late goal.

15 N.C.C. Student-Athlete of the Week Kiah Parrott Kiah, a junior, has been impressive in starting the 2018 high school golf season. She has had the best score for the Lady Kats in each of their outings. Parrott was the low medalist in two of Kokomo s four contests to begin the season and never finished lower than the fourth best. Her low score was a 71 in the Harrison Invitational.
