"Was there a B Section team good enough to topple Old 1lpdelburnians?" That answer is YES! Just ask Parade! T'VSy spies have told me that paradians coach Brendan Danaher had been planning the coup for a week. - to the exclusion of a ll else. Not only did Old Paradians win but they came from nineteen points behind at the last change and kicked seven goals straight to do so. Junior One team University Blues had a goalkicking spree at the expense of Geelong - recording a huge two hundred and eighty-six points and boosting their percentage by nearly thirty-eight. The "un-highlight" of the day was the abandonment of the game between junior Two leaders De La Salle and Old Haileyburians early in the last quarter - a most unfortunate occurrence. Back to the more mundane! A Section leaders Univ. Blues remained three eanles clear when they accounted comfortably for Ormond - and so, temporarily at least, halted that club's dash for the four. Old Scotch regained momentum and retained second spot with a timely win over North Old Boys - also charging towards the four recently. De 'La Salle came back with a venac.zc~ after the draw with the Blacks, to run away from Caulfield and score convincingly,by sixteen goals. Ivanhoe clung to third place with a narrow five point victory over St. Bernard's (after trailing for most of the day). The defeat puts St. Bernard's in last spot and intensifies their nightmares. '\tarcellin moved out of the hot spot and up to'seventh with an eight point «in over the Blacks. The scores indicate, however, that Marcellin lost much of their drive in the last quarter. Parkside - B Section - after leading by sixteen points into the last quartcr - could only manage a single scoring shot to Old Haileyburians' seven scores and must be considered fortunate to have escaped with shared points. Old Trinity led Coburg comfortably all day to record their second outright win for the year - by one hundred and forty-three points. Fawkner's seventy-six point win over Monash severely dented the Blues hopes of taking part in this year's finals. They must come home strongly from here if they are to figure prominently. Hampton Rovers trailed Alphington by seven points in their C Section clash and respectively positions would have pointed to an Alphington victory. But the Rovers came home the better (aided by the 'Ton's sudden inaccuracy) to win by fourteen points and so keep the competition more interesting. Geelong withstood a valiant last quarter effort from St. Kilda to win by five points and so consolidate their place in the four. Old Xaverians proved that they are still in with a chance when they bettered early leaders Old Brighton, but they must keep winning - their poor percentage will be of little assistance to them. A.J.A.X. snaffled the Section's top spot when they defeated Old Ivanhoe by only nine points, after having led by five goals at three-quarter time. 3 Editorial cont. - again Carey rallied after half-time, but the damage was already done and they could not overhaul Kew's ten goal lead. D Section's "upset" was the defeat of Old Camberwell by Heatherton - by five points in a game where only points separated the two for most of the day. Power House moved into joint leadership when they accounted for State Bank by sixteen points after leading comfortably all day. Power House, presently, are deriving much of their success from their ability to start well thus establishing a big lead for the other side to conquer. St. Kevin's consolidated their third place with a big win over Melbourne High after a tightly fought first half. Country Colleges gave their poor percentage a boost when they defeated University High by eleven goals, although they did let the `High Boys' in a little during the third term. A good second half saw Elsternwick run away from West Brunswick and finally emerge victorious by sixty-three points. After a very slow beginning La Trobe Blacks, in E Section, are now fifth, with a definite chance of making the four. Their one hundred point win over A.N.Z. Bank rocketed them into contention last week. Old Geelong's rather dismal showing against leader St. Bede's has put them in the hot seat - only percentage is keeping them in the four at the moment. Bulleen-Templestowe's nineteen goal win over Brunswick kept them in touch with St. Bede's and firmed their hold on the number two spot. Beverley Hills moved into third place when they accounted for Old Mentonians comfortably, despite a slow start. A determined North Brunswick denied A.M.P. the chance of moving into the four when they led all day to win by nine goals. In F Section, Thornbury scraped home by a goal against University Reds to hold top spot - aided by Footscray's draw with Bulleen United - who are now two points behind in second place. Commonwealth Bank consolidated third place when they comfortably disposed of Monash Whites, whilst Clayton made things very difficult for National Bank when they scored by three points to record only their third win. Big wins were the order in both Junior Sections. Monash Univ. are now sixth following their loss to Ormond who have moved into fifth place - a game out. North Old Boys are still undefeated - last week Hampton Rovers were the victim. Old Scotch led Univ. Blacks all day, as did Ivanhoe against St. Bernard's. In Junior Two Kew led Therry comfortably to score by seventy-five points. Coburg moved into provisional second place after their big win over Fawkner, and Old Paradians maintained fifth place with their victory over West Brunswick. Caulfield's twenty-two point win over Melbourne High enabled them to hold si th spot, but they are a long way from the four at this stage. PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAME S A SECTIO N Modesty and honesty deem that I make it clear that I tipped one winner from last week's games after I had carried on about my success in the previous round. Success is short-lived. Uni. Blues, assisted by Cortese (6 goals) and Hagar (4 goals), proved far too talented and strong for Ormond, who seemed very slow on the day. Old Scotch came out of a mini-slump with a clear win over North O.B., who were kept under pressure all the day long. Bates (O.S.) has returned to his best form and dominated the play throughout. Marcellin lifted themselves off the bottom with a good and determined defeat of Uni. Blacks, while De La Salle returned to their best form to thrash Caulfield Grammarians. St. Bernard's showed much of their old determination and were a little unlucky to lose to Ivanhoe in what was a close, tense match all day. Today's games find North O.B. In the hot seat again when they have to face up to Uni. Blues. North O.B. were a little disappointing against Old Scotch and wilted under pressure. North are aided by their home ground this week but Uni. Blues coach, Salter, has them In such fine form I must tip the Blues. Ivanhoe meet Old Scotch in what should be a very tight and strong game. However, Scotch, with the return to form of Bates and the continuing good form of Mason, should prove too brilliant for Ivanhoe. Ivanhoe were out of touch last week and just fell in on the bell which was not good enough for a team with premiership hopes. De La Salle meet Marcefiin at home following their resounding victory against Caulfield. Special mention should be made of the effort of A. Groves (D.L.S.) with his 12 goals, really a magnificent effort and Marcellin will find him difficult to cover today. De La Salle's form has been indifferent recently but their morale has no doubt been lifted greatly now. I think they will be too strong for Marcellin, who will prove lively opposition after their first taste of victory for some time. f - Uni. Blacks meet St. Bernard's at the University Oval in what is a vital game for both teams who are still in the position to sneak into the Four but who yet could be relegated. Uni. Blacks' form had picked up prior to the Marcellin game and no doubt will provide stern opposition to St. Bernard's who at least appeared to turn the corner against Ivanhoe, The Saints battled hard all day and seem to be only a touch away from regaining their form with some of their stalwarts in King,. Aughton, and Doolan on the improve. I'll tip St. Bernard's to win this one. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 8, 1978 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - - JULY 8, 1978 The final game of the round is between Caulfield Grammarians and Ormond. Both sides will be anxious to avoid defeat, particularly Ormond, who are pressing for a place in the Final Four. Both sides were soundly defeated in the last round but the more experienced players of Ormond should make sure that Caulfield do not get under their guard and steal the points at this vital stage of the season. It seems that at this stage of the season the only team that can afford any kind of a slip in form are the Blues, who are sitting pretty on top of the ladder - 3 games clear, of the nearest rivals. Last week's games secured the places to some extent of the other teams in the Four but the next coupl8 of rounds will be decisive. My tips are : Uni. Blues, Old Scotch, De La Salle, St. Bernard's and Ormond - MICHAEL ARNOLD. B SECTIO N Last Saturday was certainly the day for upsets. At long last the mighty Old Melburnians have been toppled. My congratulations to Old Paradlans team and their coach, B re ndan Danaher. You have done everything right for weeks now and deserve the praises bestowed upon you. It must have been a top class game with Old Paradians' accuracy in front of goal having a telling effect on the result. It also brought the best out of fan Cordner with a great 7 goals. Old Trinity settled the issue at Coburg and Old Halleybury stopped their slide by forcing a draw against Parkside in a top pressure game. This week the new glamour team of the Section, Old Paradians, journey out to Fawkner. This will be the match of the day. Old Paradlans are playing at their best while Fawkner really turned it on for a big win over Monash Blues. Both teams are running hot and on their own ground Fawkner are very hard to, beat. By now everyone should know the great respect I have for the Fawkner Club, so the biggest compliment I can pay the Old Paradians is to tip them to win over Fawkner at Fawkner. 1 Old Trinity, after a crushing victory over Coburg, take on the Collegians. Trinity will be keen to keep on with the job of winning and t feel they are unlucky to meet up with Collegians this week. After a week's rest, the Collegians side should line up very strong and take this one out. Old Metburnians may be just a bit lucky to be playing host to the, young Coburg side. If a, lack of concentration has crept into the

4 PREVIEWS (cont) k O.M.'s game, they have a chance to steady and get back on line against Coburg. The Coburg side has a lot of work to do if they are to lift and I can't see them improving fast enough to trouble the leaders this week. I will go for Old Melburnians to win this one. Monash, the danger side when they are at home, meet Parkside at the Blues University Oval. Parkside, who appeared to be heading for a win last week, let the chance slip and held on for a draw. The Parkside game is a first class game but they must keep working on their weaknesses if they wish to stop losing games they should win. Monash Blues have taught before it is dangerous to tip against them on their own track. Parkside are twice as hard to defeat after a set-back, so I will stay with them to sort out their problems and just get in over a stubborn Monash Blues. A word of encouragement to Russ Fitzgerald. Just keep going the way you are. Our friends in white will start to took after you soon. Old Haileybury, who, at this stage, are going along nicely, have the bye. This should help them to get a couple of their big guns back into the team. Well played Mike Porter. You are going to be at top form come Finals time. Selections : Old Paradians, Collegians, Old Melburnians, Parkside - BRIAN LAUDER. C SECTION C Section has developed into a cut-throat competition with surprises galore - only the Coldrey Brothers would have expected Hampton Rovers to knock off Alphington last weekl And some people rated Geelong only a rough chance against St. Kilda Old Collegians. New top-of-the-list side A.J.A.X. appears t o be the team to beat for this year's flag. However, that does not mean they are by any means certainties. They have been known to waver - Old Xaverlans tossed them back in May. So,' perhaps, more surprises will be in store for the important seven remaining weeks. Today, A.J.A.X. will be too good for Kew at Albert Park. A.J.A.X. must retain its winning sequence to hold top spot. Kew will, undoubtedly, offer plenty of resistance -but A.J.A.X. will take the points. Alphington are a mystery - beaten by Hampton Rovers. Well done, Rovers, on your determined come-back - a fine achievement. However, I expect Alphington to remain in Final Four calculations by beating Old Carey at Alphington today. St. Kilda and Geelong staged one of the "Classics" last week, with both teams playing superbly. My apologies St. Kilda for my 'iliadvised comments about your "muddy ground". I am amazed that the ground,can recover so splendidly from 1977 memories - the surfac e was like a bowling green. Page 6 Geelong's win put them right near the top, but St. Kilda should not panic, as the game could have swung either way. Today, the talented St. Kilda team will return to winning form and defeat Hampton Rovers. Old Xaverians, close to the Four despite its disappointing percentage, will be tested by Old Ivanhoe, an inconsistent performer. Old Ivanhoe ran A.J.A.X. to a handful of points last week and can be expected to test Old Xav's, who will be looking for another win. I fancy the Old Xav's to win this one at Yarra Park. Geelong lost narrowly to Old Brighton when the teams clashed early in the season. In that game, Geelong raced home after allowing Old Brighton too much latitude in the first half. Old Brighton are struggling at the moment. An improved Geelong" should strengthen its grip on third place with a win today. Se(ections:lA.J.A.X., Alphington, St. Kilda C.B.C.O.C., Old Xaverians, Geelong - JIM FIDGE. D SECTION Last week's results have added more variables to the possible outcome of the Section. Congratulations to Heatherton on their victory over leaders Old Camberwell. What does today hold for your tormented tipster? Two winners from last week meet at Burnley where Heathert on visit St. Kevin's. The home side is hitting form at the business end, of the season. Their team work and endeavour appear to be atoning for earlier reversals. Heatherton still can see a Final's berth and, provided they haven't left their form at home, they will be formidable opponents. I'll stick with the home side, whose forwards have the better figures over the season. The disappointing West Brunswick await Melbourne High School Old Boys at Royal Park. Reversals last week have jolted both sides. The "Magpies" have relegation visits whereas the boys from "Forest Hill" see their Finals dreams fading. The visitors will be all out to win and boost their percentage. They will be looking to Ma rtin to kick a bag of goals. Despite the game being on the Ransford Oval, I select Melbourne High to take the points. The State Bankers, anxious to regain a top billing, will be all out to inflict a heavy defeat on their visitors from University High School Old Boys. The visitors' attack hasn't proven very strong and as forwards win games, I must select the Bankers, who have forwards capable of converting opportunities. Both Eacott and Jefferies have proven capable of booting high tallies. Two sides which kicked big scores last week, Country Colleges and Elstemwick, meet in Royal Park. Elsternwick have only a 1976 victory from their five previous appearances on the Western Oval. On' that occasion they accelerated late in the final quarter to overwhelm Assumption O.C. I will stick with the Colleges for one more week, which will bring a smile to the Editor's face. (indeed[ - Ed.) In what could be a Grand Final preview old Camberwell Grammarians visit Power House. The Grammarians' form has deteriorated over the past few weeks and Peter Hutchinson, their coach, will be apprehensive as he returns to the scene of his many playing triumphs: Remember to use the left hand side dressing room, Petert Michael Perry` appears to have his charges playing with precision. Power House, through Sykes and Evans, have reliable. avenues to goal. The visitors lack a really talented spearhead and like many sides, have to rely on a concerted team effort to kick goals. On the Ross Gregory Oval and judging on June form, I select Power House to win and retain top spot. Selections : it. Kevin's Old Boys, Melbourne High School Old Boys, State Bank, Count ry Colleges, Power House. AMBITION : to read FIVE match scores in the Press - this will save time and energy for many and restrict Telecom revenue - NORM NUGENT. E SECTION St. Bede's and Bulleen-Templestowe are out of danger this Saturday by holding the two top positions, then - Beverley Hills with one game clear and another victory coming up today are safe for the time being. The power struggle is on with the next four sides - Old Geelong, A.M.P., La Trobe Blacks and one game behind these three, Old Mentonians. My loyalty to Old Geelong is costing me points and prestige, but I will stay with them again to beat Old Mentonlans. LaTrobe Blacks have won their last three games, but I feel this game today will be their real test when they tackle the leaders, St. Bede's. On form St. Bede's must be selected to win. A.M.P : did not do as well last week as I expected, but they should be too strong for the A.N.Z. today. Beverley Hills should be able to coast home in their match against Brunswick, but don't treat them too lightly - they never give in easily. Bulteen-Templestowe, at home to North Brunswick, will give them the edge on North : Selections : Old Geelong, St. Bede's, A.M.P., Beverley Hills, Buileen-Tempiestowe- NUGGET STEPHENS. F SECTIO N Clayton, at home to Thornbury, should be another win for the "Berries", even if they arenot yet at full strength. To me, Clayton have not been the success story of 1978, but then very few clubs have been able to take the V.A.FA. by storm in their first season. They now know their problems and, I trust, have a few thoughts towards solving them. The "Battle of the Banks" will be on at Harry Trott and the Common mob should have the edge in most departments. According to one of my mates, who IS a good judge of a team, the Commoners are improving and have a better than rough show, although their major test will occur next week. Therry will be at home to Monash Whites and should be able to pick up premiership points and percentage without straining themselves. Bulleen United and Uni. Reds should be another tipster's thank you but of ali,the lower teams (from a premiership list point of view only) the Reds are capable of upsetting any team. Perhaps not this week. Selections: Thornbury, Commonwealth Bank, Therry C.C.O.B., Buileen United ; Fitites having a rest day - SYD WHITFIELD. JUNIOR 1 SECTIO N A bit of an improvement in my tipping score last week and Mick Arnold certainly found out how hard A Grade is to fathom. All the top sides had good wins last week, with the Blues kicking a mammoth score and taking over second place again. Most significant result of the round was the defeat of Monash by Ormond. Monash would now appear to be out of business, while Ormond loom as the only side which could displace one of the top Four. The crunch comes today for Ormond with the visit of Uni. Blues. The Blues did as they pleased last week to kick 44 goals, but they will be brought down to earth today by Ormond. The 'Monds have Scotch In their sights and if they can win today they will probably draw level on points with that team. Blues are keen to hold onto second place, and I think they will win a close one. Unf. Blacks are at home to unbeaten North Old Boys. Despite the fact ' that It Is Ken Frenchman's 150th game as a coach at the M.U.F.C., a fine achievement by one of the nicest blokes In Amateur football, I can't see his Blacks ending North's run. North will be too fast and too good in the air. Scotch returned to the winning list last week with a good win over Blacks, but today they meet an Ivanhoe side which is full of confidence and firmly believes it is the best In the Section. It should be a good game between two talented sides, but Ivanhoe's strength and discipline should giv@ them their eighth win on end. Geelong have had a disappointing year and certainly hit rock bottom last week. They will appreciate the return to their home ground, but I can't see them opening their account against St. Bernard's. The Saints must win and win well if they are to keep out of the relegation zone. They kicked plenty of goals last week and should kick a winning score today. I can't follow Monash's form at all, but I have a feeling that back on their home ground they might be able to pull out enough stops to win a close one. Winners : Uni. Blues, No rth Old Boys, Ivanhoe, St. Bernard's and Monash - PETER BRUKNER. JUNIOR 2 SECTIO N Last week your scribe started watching an Under 13 game that started at 8 a.m. and was played In fog so dense that the goal umpires did not bother waving flags, but merely checked scores at the end of each quarter. However, as the day progressed the weather improved to give us near perfect conditions for football. Resuits were basicaliy as expected, with the exception of the abandoned De La Salle O.C. v Old Haileyburlans game. For the record, I believe De La were 19 points up 3 minutes into the last quarter. Today De La meet giant killers Coburg. Depending on how the abandoned game is handled, Coburg may finish on top of the,adder if they defeat- the visitors. They have not lost a game since going down to De La in the first round on 29th April and will be keen to avenge that defeat. A fitting result for this game would be a draw, but as a winner must be selected, I am going for Coburg to end on top of the ladder after today. TROPHIE S Old Paradians await travel-weary Old Haileyburians and as they are 2" tamesetptus percentage outside the Four they mgus 2 the four points ge t if they hope to play in thi year's Finals s. This will be a desperate game both on and off the field, and I fancy the home side. M.H.S. Old Boys are at home for the battle of the wooden spoon against West Brunswick, The visitors have not had a win since 20th May, when they defeated Therry C.C.O.B while the home side's last win was a fortnight ago, also against Therry. M.H.S. have been performing 'better in recent weeks and if they give Dunne enough opportunities on the forward line they should win. There will be another interesting game at Fawkner where Therry C.C.O.B. will be an. deavouring to bring about a repeat of their last win which was against Fawkner. Murcutt has been performing well for Therry and if he can put in a good one today they should win, Kew have established themselves as a Final Four side and today play host to Caulfield Grammarians, who are 31/2 games plus percentage outside the Four with 7 games to go, Their chance of, making the Finals is remote but not impossible. ST. BEDE'S O.C.F.C. DEATH Amateur football, and St. Bede's O.C. in particular, suffered a sad loss on the 27th June with the sudden death of St. Bede's O.C. President, George Alexander. A warm friend to all who met him ; an inspiring leader and a man dedicated to the spirit of Amateur football, his death is a severe blow to us all. Kilda C.B.C.O.C. to Bernie "Jaw" Salter on playing his 150th game for the club two weeks ago. Bernie came to the club in 1971 and immediately fitted In, both on and off the field. He has been a hard worker around the club, including a stint as Social Secretary. On the field he is renowned for his dashing play and raking drop kicks. Well done, Bernie. Hope you play many more seasons., A.M.P. RESERVES COACH'S 150TH Another great achievement at A.M.P. las t week against North Brunswick when Peter "Helmut" Henderson slipped past the 150 game mark on one good leg. Pete commenced with the club in 1970 and has been a tremendous asset - being a."one hundred per cent" man every week, whether rucking in the Seniors or leading his youngsters in the Reserves and, on many occasions doing both each Saturday. Since taking over as Reserves' Playing-Coach in 1976 he has become one of the most dedicated and valuable members we have. He has the obvious aim of a Reserves Premiership but with the crippling run of injuries to the Seniors through '77 and '78 this aim has so far been more difficult to achieve. But if I am any judge of character, this will only spur him on and we all at A.M.P. could wish for nothing better for him than the success in this direction that he is striving for. If there happens to be anybody who doesn't know "Helmut", he can generally be found behind the goals going beserk every time his little brother Ian puts another one through. Well done pal, and stick around, we need men of your calibre. 150 GAMES AT ST. BERNARD' S All at St. Bernard's congratulate Gavin Mitchell on playing his 150th game with the Club. Gavin started with the Under 19s in 1970 and since his promotion to the Seniors, has spent most of his career in the top side., Gavin played in the 1975 "A" Premiership side which has been the highlight of. his career so far. That year also saw Gavin runner-up in the Club Best and Fairest, beaten by Yz a vote. In 1976 Gavin represented Victoria in the Amateur 'Carnival and has also been on the Club Committee, acting as Treasurer. Congratulations are also extended to Gavin and Denise Ginnivan upon their recent engagement and best wishes for their future together. Graham started his football with the club in the Juniors and has since progressed to the Seniors where he is playing great football. Tony is one of nature's giants and though he may not possess the most consistently safe pair of hands in the business, opposition ruckmen Invariably find it somewhat difficult to outreach him when he stretches his arms some metres (metrication is such a bore!) above the turf. In fact, last Saturday he showed just how difficult it Is for opponents by dragging down mark after mark in front of men of significantly less stature. Tony's skills are also evident when the ball hits the ground, and it is hoped that his present good form will continue for the remainder of the season. Well done, Tony. Since joining the club in 1975, David has played most of his football in the Firsts on the forward flank and, despite a bad ankle injury last season (and the long drives from Somers this year), "Skull" is still flying high to take the spectacular big grab in the square, or running past for the crumbs or handball. Congratulations, Dave, on this 50, and best wishes for the next. Congratulations to Power House Reserves' wingman Geoff Pullin, who plays his 50th V.A.F.A. game today. After a long apprenticeship in the Club XVIII, Geoff was "recruited" to the Reserves, where he has been a model of consistency ever since. Geoff's rare ability to always be on his own has started many a forward move and he has been a key player in the success of the Reserves this year. As a First Aid and training expert, his advice is frequently sought and most appreciated by the players. Good luck, Geoff, for another good game today. July 15 - Ormond v North Old Boy s UMPIRES' ~ R'~ Season 1978 has seen many 'firsts' for the umpires in the V.A.F.A. but one thing that has been overlooked until now has been the resumption of this section of the Amateur Footballer. Organised training started very early this season - in February. A large number of new umpires were welcomed into our ranks - many with a great deal of experience. In fact by the first round there was a full list. Unfortunately injuries and resignations have since reduced our numbers. It is still not too late for new umpires to join the panel! Among the 'firsts' for the year are included: The introduction of the two-umpire system into `A' grade matches. The introduction of year old lads as boundary umpires in 'A' grade. These are field umpires of the future and clubs are urged to make them at home in Amateur football. For the first time the Umpires' Association has a delegate at V.A.F.A. meetings. Daryl Hill is the man who worked hard to achieve this and it is appropriate that he should be the first delegate. He is a past President of the Umpires' Association and a senior umpire of long standing. The Umpires' Association is most grateful to the V.A.F.A. for accepting this proposal and welcoming Daryl to the meetings. These are all progressive steps for Amateur football in Victoria and the Umpires' Association looks forward to playing its part in the promotion of our game.
