Review Week 18 : 14 th 18 th January 2019 On Saturday the 15th of December last a small group of Transition Year students went Carol Singing in Supervalu. The group entertained busy shoppers and staff for one hour from 11am - midday singing a medley of Christmas Carols and Hymns. Ellen Whelan ably accompanied the group on Guitar with Ms Gilbert on keyboard while Ms Mc Inerney conducted. An enjoyable morning was had by all. Carol Singers included: Clodagh Moynihan, Jacob Keohane, Comfort Olasimo, Paula Fernandino, Luna Corrale, Ellie Desmond and Ellen Whelan on Guitar ( By Ms Gilbert)
The Panto On Thursday 6 th December the following students went to the Opera house to see Aladdin. We were lucky enough to get corporate box tickets so we had the best seats in the house!! It was a very enjoyable show. On Friday 11 th January GCC played their first ever game at under level 15 in the Munster Cup and were very unlucky to lose despite a very encouraging performance to a strong St Colmans Fermoy team 4-2. Goal scorers on the day were David Bomor and Marvin Ekhosueh. (Billy Woods).
The Chaplains team attended Mass in St Joseph s Church, Glanmire Tuesday morning 18 th December. The students sang at Mass accompanied by Ms. Mc Inerney. After Mass the students cleaned the Church in preparation for the Christmas Ceremonies. Below are reflections from two of the students. Mass was very good this morning, I really liked singing in the Church with my friends and cleaning the church after Mass. It helped me to reflect on my day and pray for the people I know who are sick. I really liked the crib at the back of the Church. People were getting it ready as we were there I was amazed at how many people were at Mass, I thought it was nice that they all said the rosary together. Singing at the Mass was very enjoyable people joined in for the last song, we then helped to clean the Church which was good as we were helping our Parish. Overall the Mass was very peaceful and enjoyable (Marie McInerney)
Wed Dec 19th. The School of Commerce held a "wearecork" event and invited 6 GCC music students to perform. Muireann O'Connell, Ciara Stacey, Ciara Leddy, Anna Morrissey, Olivia Cowhie and Jade Star Murphy all 5th year music students represented GCC and sang "The Parting Glass". Attended by Mr Ted Owens the event celebrated inclusion and highlighted homelessness in Cork. Mr Donal Creedon stole the show with his storytelling. The event finished with festive mince pies and coffee in aid of Penny Dinners. (Ms Mannix) Visit by LEO Mentor to TY Mini Companies. Denis Casey, Management and Business Consultant and mentor with Cork Local Enterprise Office (LEO) visited GCC this week(tuesday 15 th January) to meet with TY Mini Companies. The students presented their companies to Denis and received valuable feedback and advice in moving forward towards the Regional Finals. Denis gave advice on their Business Plans and how to keep their ideas alive after their big sales at the Christmas Trade Fair. The companies discussed their individual challenges and goals. They are now very motivated towards the Regional Final Competition in April.
TY Tag Rugby Blitz We organised a tag rugby blitz for first and second years as part of our mini company on Tuesday 15 th January. In this picture was one of our first games with first years. They competed in 4 different games against different teams, the teams that won the most games then entered the semi-final. These are 2 of the people involved with score keeping and refereeing. They are two of the main people in the mini company. We came up with the idea to do a tag rugby blitz because we knew that the younger years are really sporty.
In this picture it was one of the friendly matches we did. Everyone that part took in the blitz really enjoyed the day and got very involved with the games. We made the teams evenly and everyone was happy with them. We had a number of fourth year students volunteer to help referee and score keep. Everyone who volunteered enjoyed their day a lot and was happy they did. Everyone got to know the first year children and made new friends. This is all the first years that part took in the event. They all really enjoyed it and were all very happy at the end of it.
On Tuesday 14 th of January the John Paul II award team went to Mass in St. Joseph s Church. It was the feast day of St. Ita. The Priest talked about her she founded a school and convent in Limerick and taught St. Brendan the navigator. After Mass, we cleaned the church, helping out the sacrastian. We hovered, polished and cleaned the windows. This was good as we felt we were helping out our local parish. At Ms. Mc Inerney brought us to the parish centre for a cup of tea and biscuits. We then met with the Glanmire Active Retired group and showed them the knitted squares we have made over Chistmas. Ms. Mc Inerney will sew them together to make a blanket to be sent to teenagers in one of the orphanages in Chernobyl. The members of the Active Retired are going to get wool and knit suqares to join with ours to make the blanket. We all look forward to Tuesday 29 th Jauary when we will go back to the Parish centre to work with the Active Retired.(Aaliyah Philpott. Rang Padraig)
Munster Council GAA Transition Year Coaching Award On Friday 11th and Monday the 14 th of January, Mr Shane Supple East Cork Games Development Administrator for the GAA came to GCC to deliver the Munster Council GAA Foundation Coaching Award. On the Friday we focused on differences between Child, Youth & Adult and what particular needs each group on the playing field. Monday was all practical where groups of 4 had to coach using the IDEA approach. This was a very worthwhile course and we would like to thank Shane and the PE department for organising it. (Barry Shortall)
On Thursday January 17 th five fifth year Business and Economics students attended a Bond Trading Challenge organised by Bank of Ireland in Clayton Hotel, Silver Springs. Over one hundred and fifty Cork students attended the challenge. As a team the students had to react to real life world economic situations, set out as news headlines, and decide whether to buy or sell stocks and bonds. A fun, interactive competition, the students learned practical application of concepts such as the laws of demand and supply, the relationship between inflation and interest rates and the importance of economic indicators. They became more confident as the morning went on responding to the real market scenarios, making decisions and managing their share and bond portfolio. A very engaging and enjoyable experience. (Mairead Kingston) GCC Students (back row L-R) Jack D Arcy, Ciaran Cummins McCarthy & Aaron Foley, (front row L-R) Niamh McAllen & Rionna O Mahony with Irish International Athlete Rob Heffernan at the Bond Trading Challenge.
