1 First XVIII Football, Rostrevor defeated Immanuel College last weekend in front of a home crowd. CO-CURRICULAR NEWS 1ST XVIII FOOTBALL Rostrevor Immanuel Goal Kickers: Patrick Shrestha 2, Harrison Petty 2, Flynn Pisani 1, Xavier Cubillo 1, Adam Nichaloff 1, Nathan Grant 1, Murphy Short 1, Mitch Warren 1. Better Players: Harrison Petty, Toby Pink, Mitchell Gum, Hugh Walker, Flynn Pisani, Guy Hutchinson. TERM 2, WEEK 9 FRIDAY 01 JULY 2016 Absentee line: BULLETIN Game Summary: After previously having a strong win against Immanuel earlier in the season, we were expecting a fired up opponent in our Round 7 clash at home. Immanuel certainly began with high intensity and a game plan that restricted our fast ball movement and closed up our scoring area inside forward 50. The game was a scrappy affair early with both sides having large numbers around the ball making the game very contested. Whilst we enjoy playing a fast running game, we also enjoy playing in tight and relished the challenge of winning the ball in close. Whilst the scoreboard remained quite close throughout the game, we dominated possession and field position for the majority of the game. Our Inside 50 entry count for the game (60) compared to Immanuel s (38) highlighting the amount of play and field position we controlled. With Immanuel congesting the Rostrevor forward 50 with extra numbers, it made it very difficult to find any space and open players to kick to. This often resulted in us kicking to a large pack of players. When the opposition were able to get the ball out of our attacking area, trying to catch us with quick rebound play, our midfield and backs set up well behind the ball often creating the turn over and relaunching the ball back into attack. The game often felt like tennis with the ball going back and forth inside our front half. Whilst we have had some easier wins this season it was good for the group to have to grind out a win. At times it was frustrating that our control of the game wasn t transferring onto the scoreboard but our improvement in being able to maintain intensity and keep focus for longer periods, eventually allowed us to run out winners by 16 points. Harrison Petty was the dominant player on the ground with his aerial marking being a highlight. With us lacking height up forward Harrison stepped up in his responsibility as the key forward and showed the way for the team. Flynn Pisani continued his good form up forward, regularly being first to the contest at ground level. Toby Pink had to shoulder most of the workload in the ruck and again had a strong game. Brad McCarthy, Guy Hutchinson and Xavier Cubillo all enjoyed the tightly contested style of the game, regularly winning contested ball through the midfield and around stoppages. Josh Richards and Nathan Grant provided good outside run in their wing roles. Josh was unlucky not to be awarded a mark in the centre of the ground which would have been a mark of the year contender. Down back Mitch Gum and Hugh Walker took a number of intercepting marks and repeatedly set up our rebound play. Steve Symonds Rostrevor 1st XVIII Head Coach

In a tetchy affair, several yellow cards were brandished as niggly fouls took the place of open football. Both the skipper, Nathan Monda, and Patrick Caraccia went into the book for innocuous challenges that put the lads on edge for the rest of the game. It could have been worse early though for Rossi as Iggies had a sharp chance tipped away by youngster Jamie Signorello, tending the goals. On the back of last week s Save of the Century, the young glovesmith has a bright future. Iggies battled well with the ever combative Sam Belyovski and skipper Nathan Monda at the back, proving impenetrable. Under increasing pressure in the second period, Iggies defenders held out until the 50th minute, after which they succumbed to what was easily one of the finest goals seen in school football. The busy Matthew Mezzini was brought down 5 yards outside the box on the 4 degree angle. As the referee sprayed the foam, Patrick Caraccia stepped up with an eye for the far top corner. The ball began about 3 to 4 yards outside the target, up and over the wall, beyond the despairing dive of the keeper and into the back of the net. The race to the Rostrevor supporter group (RCE), who had In other Co-curricular News: formed at the carpark end of the ground, had only one winner as Carracia was met with raucous praise. As the game continued, chances were few and far between, but Julian Esposito sealed the deal when his strike found the back of the net to help Rossie continue their claim for a coveted spot in the State Knockout Finals. Striker, Julian Esposito had said before the match that the team was not motivated by revenge as the sides met for the first time since the controversial loss at home early last year under stand-in coach, Urbani. His strike with 20 minutes to go, sealed a deserved win. I was in the right place at the right time, the lanky striker commented afterwards. It dropped to me and I wasn t going to miss, it meant a lot. Skipper, Monda, commented on his first game back after injury, the lads did well today in the face of some pretty scrappy football. We came for the points and left happy with that. With wins against Trinity, Saints and now Iggies under our belts we need to make it count at the pointy end of the season. We probably need to be cleaner with our ball movement and more clinical in front of goal, a clearly relieved skipper commented. John Coop First XI Soccer Coach George Connolly (Year 10) kicked 6 goals against Westminster in the 10B match last Saturday, contributing to their strong victory. After scoring one of the best free kick goals seen at 1st XI level, Year 12 Patrick Caraccia, was involved in setting up both of the goals scored by Campbelltown Reserves in the FFA Cup final where his team claimed a 2-1 victory over Adelaide Comets. If your son, be he a current or past scholar, has made any significant achievement in an activity outside of the College, please pass this on via to jfischer@rostrevor.sa.edu.au or by phone, so that it can be included in the weekly newsletter.
