Friday 3 rd February 2017 Barfield News Website: admin@barfieldschool.com PRACTICAL MATHS DAY 2017 After many years of World Of Maths delivering Practical Maths Day, this time we invited The Happy Puzzle Company to visit and sessions were arranged in the HC Auditorium for all the children from Reception upwards. The day was a great success and below is a selection of comments and observations from some of the children. The Happy Puzzle Company left some copies of their catalogues for us. If you would like one, these are available in the School Office, on a first come, first served basis. A few more photos of the day can be found on the next page. "Their puzzles helped us to use teamwork, collaboration and determination." James Reid "It made me realise that I could accomplish more than I first thought." "The games might have looked quite easy, but they were actually quite hard." "We had a lot of trouble fitting the tubes together, but we didn't give up and we did it in the end." "The day grouped everyone's skills together and it made you learn to work in a group better." "The penguin iceberg game made you think of creative ways to solve it. It was all about weight distribution." "It made me feel proud that we managed to complete the puzzle." "Overall it was amazing, good to work together and so much fun." "It was the best Practical Maths Day." "I didn't want it to end as I was having so much fun."

Practical Maths Day Congratulations to the following children for being Star of The Week in their classes: Year 2: Year 1: Reception: Nikolay Shishkin for using punctuation appropriately in his written work. Harrison Lee & George Simms for keeping the Golden Rule of We are honest. Florence Hollands for learning to use different maths strategies to work out addition. Jackson Stoneman for helping another child to do up their coat. Owlets had a wonderful time in the Hall on Monday with the brightly coloured Parachute. The children played a number of games around and under the Parachute, such as running around the circle when one of their names was called, bouncing the teddy bear up and down until he fell off and going into the Bear Cave to wait for the bear. Well done Owlets. You were so good at looking, listening and following instructions. What fun we all had! Angie Ainge

YEAR 2 PARENTS' MORNING On Thursday, Year 2 parents had the opportunity to join their children for a morning of lessons. In addition to the simple enjoyment involved, this was also a chance for the children to have lessons in some of the locations which they will be visiting on a more regular basis in September when they move in to the Prep part of the school. The morning started for all with a Music lesson with Ms Lynch, before Mrs Pryce took over to explore some aspects of Drama. Splitting into two groups either side of morning Break enabled everyone to experience a Humanities' lesson with Miss Trevett and either have Art with Mrs Lester or DT with Mr Hollands. A delicious roast pork lunch was then followed by the final lesson of the morning, Science, in the Lab, with Mrs Tupper and Mr Hollands. From the conversations had, and subsequent comments received, it was clear that this was a very successful, informative and enjoyable experience for all involved, and we look forward to repeating it again next year. My thanks go to the parents and children, and to the teachers mentioned above for delivering the lessons and to all the other members of staff who were involved. James Reid

Chinese New Year The Year of the Rooster! The Nursery children have had a busy week full of culture, learning all about Chinese New Year and the Year of the Rooster! The Owlets have spent lots of time in the Chinese Restaurant role play area, dressing up in Chinese clothing and playing with dried rice! They have also been very creative in making their own Chinese dragons and dancing to lots of different Chinese music! The Owls have had a really fascinating week. They have learned all about the year in which they were born and also had a visit from Scarlett s mummy, Mrs Hardwick, who taught them all about Chinese New Year and how she celebrates with her family, as well as showing the children how to write and pronounce their names in Chinese. At the end of her visit, Mrs Hardwick had brought in some Chinese sweets for the children to try. They were yummy! The Owls children have also shown their creative sides this week by making lanterns in the classroom, and then venturing down to the woods to sculpt Roosters on to the trees in Forest School! The Owls and Owlets have worked collaboratively together this week, to create a giant dragon s head, which they then used to dance like dragons in their Music lesson with Ms Lynch! The highlight of the week was sampling all the different types of Chinese food! On Wednesday, the children enjoyed eating sweet and sour chicken with noodles and broccoli for lunch in the dinner hall! The children also went to the Cookhouse for some food tasting; they tried noodles, rice, spring rolls, dumplings and prawn crackers and these all went down a treat! Happy New Year! Sarah Marshall

Reception Visit to The Natural History Museum The children in Reception had a fantastic day at The Natural History Museum on Thursday. They saw lots of amazing skeletons and fossils, had a close encounter with a big roaring T-Rex, and were amazed by the size of the big blue whale. The children behaved brilliantly and had a great time. There were lots of sleepyheads on the coach as we returned to school. Thank you to all the mums who helped to make the trip such a success. Melanie Lewin

SPORTS ROUND-UP Friday 27 th January Tag Rugby v Hawley Place U9 & U8(H) Barfield U9 6 2 Hawley Place U9 Barfield U9 Return Match 3 3 Hawley Place U9 Barfield U8 7 4 Hawley Place U8 Barfield U8 Return Match 6 6 Hawley Place U8 All our boys in Years 3 & 4 participated in this fixture together with 12 boys from Hawley Place. Our Under 9 team performed extremely well and were complimented by the opposition coach on their ability to organise themselves and support each other during match play. Our Under 8 players were divided into 2 separate groups and each group played one half of each match. Both age groups were able to compete in a return match, each of these ending in a draw. An excellent performance by all who took part. Ray Taylor Netball v Hawley Place U9 (H) Barfield 7 1 Hawley Place We played a mixed Year 4 and Year 3 team against the opposition s Year 4s. Our players tried hard and there was some very successful passing down the court to the shooters. Sophia was very accurate and scored with nearly every attempt. Well done girls. The Player of the Match was Jessica Spencer Godfrey. Ros Milton Monday 30 th January Netball v Frensham Heights U11 (H) Barfield 9 7 Frensham Heights Our girls played a very good match against a strong opposition, to whom we had lost last term. We started slowly, but as the match progressed, the ball handling and use of space improved and we were able to get the ball to our shooters with more accuracy. Players of the Match were Robyn Singleton and India Steer. Well done girls. A great match. Ros Milton Wednesday 1 st January Mixed Challenge Match v Dolphin U12 1 x 8-a-side (H) Barfield 3 2 Dolphin Well done to all those involved in the Challenge Match against Dolphin. It was pleasing to see the improvement in teamwork during the Command Tasks. Steve Hollands Rugby v Longacre U11 1 x 9-a-side (A) Longacre 6 2 Barfield The boys played a good second game of the season, in this rematch against Longacre. It was an evenly matched game with the opportunities taken by Longacre. Well done boys. The Men of the Match were Harrison Blake-Pead and Hamish Forrester. Karl Gibling

SPORTS ROUND-UP (continued) Wednesday 1 st February (continued) Netball v Greenfield U11 (H) Barfield 13 0 Greenfield I challenged the U11s today by making them play in unaccustomed positions for most of the match. Despite this they all played very well, adapting to their new roles very quickly. Players of the Match were Natalie Phillips and Annabel Manicom for their contribution to the game. Ros Milton Netball v Greenfield (U10) (H) Barfield 3 7 Greenfield All the girls worked hard, but now need to concentrate on their spatial awareness by balancing themselves on court. Phoebe Thorpe defended well using the space and her hands securely. Player of the Match was Ines Tinnirello. Victoria Astor Thursday 2 nd February Netball v Greenfield U9 (H) Barfield 4 4 Greenfield The girls built up a good lead; however, Greenfield fought back hard, and earned a draw. Both sides played well. Players of the Match were Lara Duthie (Attack) and Grace Wede (Defence). Well done girls. Victoria Astor Boys Unihoc v Greenfield U9 2 x 6-a-side (H) Barfield U9 A 3 0 Greenfield U9 A Barfield U8/U9 B 3 0 Greenfield U9 B Barfield U8/U9 C 2 1 Greenfield U9B All the boys in Years 3 and 4 played in this match. Barfield put together three teams and the all-round performance was excellent. Well done boys. Ray Taylor Sainsbury s School Vouchers Barfield has benefited hugely from the collection of these vouchers in the past, so please collect them and pass them on to the School. A box will be located in the lobby of the School entrance. Thank you for your support. Ray Taylor
