Dear Parents/Guardian Welcome to what should serve as a positive and exciting experience for your son. We, the coaching staff of the DVHS Football Program, have put together an expectations package for you in the hopes of helping you to better understand the program with which your child is involved. Our objectives are to teach young players the qualities of teamwork, commitment, selflessness, leadership and the pursuit of excellence. This handbook is a look into what the Wildcat football coaching staff deems to be the important facets of our football program. High school football should be a positive, memorable experience for all involved. Coaches goals are to provide players the opportunity to be the best football player they can be. We intend to teach the game of football, instill discipline, encourage classroom success, prepare players through weight training and off- season conditioning, and build UNITY through hard work and commitment to a common goal of a successful football season. In order to be successful, everyone involved should realize that a positive attitude is a must. Very few things in life worthwhile come easily. Hard times require a positive outlook and attitude to continue striving to improve. Our motto revolves around everyone making a great effort to get better every day for the good of the TEAM. A player s level of improvement is directly related to the amount of effort put forth in each activity the team undertakes. We, as coaches, expect players to give great effort in everything we instruct players to do. While expecting great effort from players, coaches expect great effort from each other as well. It would be unfair for the coaches to expect more of a player than the coach is willing to give himself. In order for all to understand their role, everyone involved should realize the concept of "Team Before Self". Coaches will show a genuine interest in the well- being and concerns of each player as an individual, however; coaches, players, parents and administrators cannot put their interests before the teams best interest. As coaches, we will emphasize the importance of PLAYER ACCOUNTABILITY. It is expected that players will be individually responsible for their actions and day- to- day choices. Everyone should remember, "Playing football is a privilege, not a right". There is no room for special privileges on a team. Everyone is expected to abide by the same standards and serve the same punishment when they do not. In the event an individual player becomes a hindrance to the teams goals, that player will be removed. The DVHS Football Program demands a great deal of time from our student athletes and we do not tolerate absences or lateness for our practices, games or other scheduled events. There is a lot to learn in a relatively short amount of time so good attendance helps both the player and the team. We need you to support us in this effort and make sure that your son is available for the scheduled practices, games and other events such as teambuilding and fundraising. Thank you for allowing your son to be a part of our program. Together we will have a great deal of fun while working hard towards our goals. Coach Tisa 3

COMMITMENT Commitment is what transforms a promise into a reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions and the actions that speak louder than words. It is making the time when there is none. Commitment is the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism. 4

Tough Love is in effect here. We will not accept you as you are. Instead, we will show you a vision of what you can be and help you to achieve it. 5

Program Philosophy As Vince Lombardi said, Winning isn t everything, but striving to win is. This is the foundation of Dougherty Valley High School s football philosophy. Football is demanding. It is a sport of discipline and will, requiring commitment and hard work. It takes a dedicated athlete. Football is not for everyone. However, playing football will give back to you far more than it will demand. Football provides a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride. It fosters confidence, courage, and cultivates lifelong friendships. Being a football player is a state of mind, and it is an honor that only a few share. Although winning is always an objective and is important, we believe in, and work toward, what Vince Lombardi said, The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. At the beginning of each season, players should make a commitment to strive for victory. How can I make the team better? should be the question regularly asked throughout the season. Hardwork, discipline, commitment, and sportsmanship are imperative. They are how we define a successful season and football program. Being a committed member of the Dougherty Valley High School football team translates directly to behaving as a responsible member of Dougherty Valley High School and the community. We must always remember whom we represent. Each player and player s parents/guardians must sign the Player/Parent Contract, created by the Dougherty Valley High football program, located at the back of this handbook. Dougherty Valley Wildcat Pride It is a privilege to be a member of this football program and to be a Dougherty Valley Wildcat. The time, effort, and energy we all spend in making our program a success is based on a strong conviction that football and an education will provide some of your greatest values and most rewarding moments. Take pride in everything you do as part of our program, for in football as in life, the success you enjoy will result from the effort you are willing to give to be a winner. Dougherty Valley High School Football has committed to PRIDE and EXCELLENCE. Remember the players who came before you every time you walk into the locker room, weight room, step on the field, or wear a Dougherty Valley Wildcat Football uniform. Remember you are setting the example for those who will follow in your footsteps. You are a Dougherty Valley Wildcat all the time and forever. PROGRAM GOALS We want to build a program at Dougherty Valley that everyone players, coaches, parents, students, faculty, administration and community can be proud of. We want to build a great tradition at Dougherty Valley and make Wildcat football a championship 6

program. We believe that there are many determined young people here that want to have such a program and who are willing to work hard together to achieve it. The coaching staff is committed to providing the positive leadership necessary to achieve consistent success. In order to build the program we all want, it is important for players, parents and coaches to keep in mind the basic goals that serve as our foundation. Those goals are: 1. The football program must be an integral part of our school and one of which everyone can be proud of. 2. We must do things the right way and win the right way. 3. We must work hard and earn what we get. 4. We must develop team unity and maintain a team concept. 5. We should have fun playing and practicing the game. The coaching staff believes there are certain fundamental principles that are essential to our success. We don t just want to win games we want to help our players develop into the finest young adults they can become. We believe character is important, both on and off the field. Some of those principles are: 1. LOYALTY: We want our players to be loyal to the program, their teammates, and to the coaching staff. Loyalty is essential to building a strong program. 2. COMMITMENT: We want a commitment to excellence. Once you make a commitment, carry it to completion. 3. HIGH EXPECTATIONS: We want our players to have high but reasonable expectations of what they can accomplish as individuals and as a team. 4. SELF- DISCIPLINE: We all should be accountable for our own actions. Players should do the right thing even when no one is watching. They should work hard even when they don t feel like it. 5. MAKE RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS: This goes hand in hand with self- discipline. Your teammates depend on you. Decisions you make on and off the field will affect your teammates, so make responsible choices. You are accountable for them. 6. PLAY HARD: We will never accept less than your best effort and neither should you. 7. PLAY WITH ENTHUSIASM: Enthusiasm is contagious. It can inspire you and your teammates to greatness. 8. BE A TEAM: Work together, play together, and succeed together. 7

Mission Statement We will: Develop student- athletes who are committed to personal excellence and team success. Provide an inspirational and motivational environment where preparation, hard work and commitment generate legitimate opportunities for success. Emphasize the importance and development of the fundamentals and techniques necessary for positive experiences in football and in life. Create a consistently exciting and successful football program that generates high levels of support, pride, and tradition for all in our community to share. Football Program Alignment Philosophy Freshman and Junior Varsity Football Purpose: Teach players the intermediate rules of high school football and the strategies of DVHS football. Emphasis: Prepare the players, both mentally and physically, for Varsity football. Winning Freshman and JV games is not an emphasis. The largest difference between a lower level (Freshman and Junior Varsity) and a Varsity player is their aggressiveness. Lower Level players tend to be more timid for one of two reasons: (1) they do not understand the game and they play confused or, (2) they do not have the size, strength, and agility to play aggressively. The focus of both Freshman and JV football is to overcome these shortcomings and develop players that are ready for Varsity. Weight room: Develop strength, agility, quickness, and endurance through a structured lifting, agility, and conditioning program designed to make the players bigger, faster, and stronger. This will allow players to meet the physical demands of playing high school football. Increasing the strength, speed, and agility of the JV players will improve their ability to prepare for varsity. Varsity Football Purpose: Teach players the advanced rules of high school football and the strategies of DVHS football. 8

Emphasis: Win games by fielding the best team of players possible, who are both mentally and physically prepared to play football at the varsity level. Prepare potential college athletes for the collegiate level. Weight room: Continue to improve strength, agility, quickness, and endurance to physically dominate opponents. Playing Time Perhaps the most emotional part of a student athlete being involved in high school athletics centers around playing time. Attendance, attitude, commitment, and of course playing skill, enter into the decision. There are many decisions made on an ongoing basis by the Dougherty Valley coaching staff. It is our responsibility to decide which athletes should start a game and at what level of play. These coaching decisions, often difficult to make, are made only by our coaching staff and are approached very seriously after having observed and evaluated the players in practice sessions, film, game- like situations, scrimmages, camps, and actual games. We understand that every player wants to start on our football team unfortunately however, not all will. Additionally, some players who start the season as starters may not retain that position due to competition or caliber of play. Consequently, we feel it is important for you to understand how we will decide on playing time as the season progresses. The following five points will be the criteria used in selecting starters and developing depth charts (ordering of positions). 1. Knowledge of Assignment: We cannot and will not play people who do not know their assignments. All coaches will spend extra time with players if they so desires. Everyone can give 100% in this aspect. 2. Hustle and Effort: Everyone will be expected to give 100% at all times. Extra effort wins games. Everyone can give their all in this regard. 3. Hitting and Mental Toughness: We will discover during practice who is aggressive and mentally tough. Football is a collision sport and it must be played with mental and physical toughness. This will be the very core of our football program. 4. Contribution to the Overall Team: Football is one of the few absolute team sports left. The individual, who motivates teammates to do better, is always enthusiastic and ready, will make a greater contribution than one who does not possess this quality. An athlete who HATES TO LOSE is an invaluable player. Everyone can be a team player. Everyone wants to win, but we are looking for people who can t live with losing due to the fact that they are letting their teammates down. Players in our program have to learn about trust and accountability. 5. Talent: If the above four characteristics are equal, then the players who has the most talent, and makes the most plays, will start. Obviously if a player is injured or misses practice it will be difficult for us to evaluate them. 9

Above all, we will give EVERY player the opportunity to earn a position on the varsity team. It is our desire to play the BEST players and as many people as possible. Attendance (Absences and Tardies) All players are expected to be present and on time to practice. 1. Any player who is late to practice will be held after practice to make up for the time they missed (Wildcat Reminders). 2. Any player who misses practice without notifying the program level Head Coach in person, Mobile APP, phone call or by ahead of time (24 hours) will be dealt with accordingly. a. 1st Unexcused absence = miss game time at Coach s discretion (i.e. miss 1st quarter of the game) b. 2nd Unexcused absence = 1 game suspension c. 3rd Unexcused absence = possible removal from team 3. In the case of an unforeseen emergency, parent must contact the Head Coach. 4. All illness and sickness absences need to have a prior approval or doctor s excuse upon returning to practice to determine excused or unexcused. This does not mean that any time a player is sick or ill they need to go to the doctor, but any major illness and sickness that causes players to miss practice should seek treatment. Not feeling good is not an excused absence. 5. Any absence, regardless of excused or unexcused, will require conditioning to be made up upon returning to practice. (This is for player safety purposes so they are not out of shape when they return) 6. The DVHS Athletic Dept. policy states that an athlete must be at school for the entirety of 4 class periods to be eligible for practice or games on that day. If it is a block day (Wednesday/Thursday) the player needs to be there at least 2 class periods. 7. Any appointments (Dr. visit, Dentist, etc.) should not be made during practice time as well. An absence is considered excused for the following reasons: 1. Sick 2. Family emergency NOTE: The coaching staff must accept the excuse as a valid one. For example, a player telling his coach he wants a day off to study or isn t feeling well isn t an excused absence. Tardies All players are expected to be punctual to all practices (including Saturday for Varsity players) and team activities. Practice times vary based upon day and week of practice. Any player who is late to practice will be held after practice to make up for the time they missed (Wildcat Reminders). 10

Excessive tardies can be taken into consideration for participation or dismissal from the team. Safety Safety is of particular concern for most parents of football players. We purchase the finest equipment that money can buy and each piece of equipment is properly outfitted and checked by coaches at the time of issue. Whether it s on the practice field, during the course of a game, in the weights room, or a camp activity, each player is instructed with the proper fundamentals and techniques to ensure we provide and sustain the safest environment possible. As coaches, we will do our best to ensure that your child is never thrown into a situation where they will get injured or hurt. This is why it is important that players attend practice on a daily basis. Injuries From time to time players will get injured or hurt at practice and/or during a game. The DVHS football program has an Athletic Trainer that all players will receive treatment from. The proper protocol for injuries is as follows: Step 1- Report the injury: See Athletic Trainer before, during or after practice on the field for a diagnosis of the injury. Step 2- Diagnos the severity of the injury: The Athletic Trainer will give a diagnosis and recommendation of treatment. Step 3- Treatment: The player will either continue treatment or go to the doctor if recommended by the Athletic Trainer. Step 4 - Getting back on the field: A player will only be allowed to go back on the field once the trainer allows or gets clearance from doctor. Please know that even if a player feels better the coaches will not allow them to participate until the doctor note gives full medical clearance. This is why we suggest having the trainer review the injury before going to the doctor. Held out of practice due to Injuries a. Any player held out of practice will dress in the uniform and helmets (unless concussion) that practice and will complete a conditioning circuit. Once the circuit is completed, they will go to their position groups for the remainder of the practice. This will keep all players up to date so they are ready to go when they come back to practice. b. Any player not willing to do the above will forfeit their privilege to be on the sideline for the next game. If a player is out for a long period of time they must still attend practice during the week. Failure to attend practice due to injury could result in not joining their team during the games on the sideline. 11

Prevention of Injuries Unfortunately, injury is a common occurrence in athletics. Prevent injuries by: Working hard at conditioning programs established by your coaches. Reporting to the first practice in good physical condition. Keeping mentally involved during games and practices. Going as hard during every practice as you do in games. Learning to listen to what your body is saying. Most often pain tells you something is wrong. Stop, before the injury gets worse. If You Are Injured Tell your coach immediately and see the trainer. We will direct to the Athletic Trainer for diagnosis and treatment. Follow his/her advice. Do what your body tells you to do. No one has the right to tell you that your body does not hurt. Academics The football program takes academics very seriously and it is imperative that all players maintain a 2.0 GPA during the season. I will have players complete weekly football progress reports during the season in order for me to review their grades and behavior in all of their classes. It is expected that we represent ourselves with character in the classroom and focus our attention on academics both during the season and off- season. Failure to maintain a 2.0 GPA during the season will result in players attending mandatory study hall sessions either at lunch or Access period. If a player is unable to maintain a 2.0 during the season, they can be released from the team in order to focus their attention on academics, and will not be allowed back until the following season. Football takes a great deal of time, which means that players must learn to budget their time to do their schoolwork. The same attitude of hard work, self- discipline and commitment that are required to be successful on the football field will also make you successful in the classroom. Just as we expect your best on the field, we expect your best in the classroom. 1. Do the work teachers assign and do it on time. Do the best quality work possible. Don t wait until the last minute it s easier to keep up than to catch up. 2. Treat teachers with respect. If you work with your teachers, they will work with you. Most teachers respect the commitment you make to football. 3. Plan your day so you can get your assignments done. You may have to give up something else. You chose to play football because you wanted to. Choose to do your schoolwork because you want to. Do not make excuses. 12

4. Never use football as an excuse for not doing your schoolwork. This is not acceptable. 5. Parents/Guardians should help their players set definite times for doing homework and studying for tests throughout the year, not just during the season. 6. If you need help in a course, ask the teacher in a polite way. They will usually help. Also, ask your coaches. 7. We will check to see how you are doing in the classroom, both in terms of academics and behavior. Any problems will be addressed. We expect our players to be positive leaders and good examples for others in the school. 8. Remember, if you don t meet academic eligibility requirements, you can t play. We can t and we wouldn t even if we could change your grades. We ll help you get whatever help you need to keep up and be successful in class but we won t do it for you or arrange for you to get something you don t earn. Equipment Responsibility Outfitting our players is a substantial cost to the program. Equipment costs continue to increase and in fact, just ONE football helmet currently costs $225. It is the personal responsibility of the player, and ultimately the parents or guardian to safeguard and maintain all equipment issued. Uniforms, both practice and game, are supplied for the sole purpose of football participation. Equipment is not to be used for any other purpose. Practice clothing is to be worn at all practices and should be washed AT LEAST once per week. Game uniforms are very expensive and the best care is encouraged. Uniform Washing Suggestions: - As a general rule of thumb wash using cold water with NO BLEACH. - Hang dry rather than use the dryer. ALL equipment is to be turned in by the player to his coach when called for, and no later than three (3) days after the conclusion of the season. It will be the student s responsibility to see that CLEANED equipment is checked off by the coach upon its return. Equipment not handled this way will be deemed lost or stolen, and the student and family will be charged for the replacement value. Diplomas, grades and/or transcripts can be withheld until these conditions are met. 13

Fundraising Fundraising is a Team Function! Because of the high costs involved in maintaining and replacing football equipment, buses, pay coaches, film games, etc., our players are required to solicit funds through designated football fundraisers every year. We cannot stress enough how important this is to our program. Your complete cooperation, support and encouragement is needed to help us in ensuring that we can continue to outfit our team, supply practice and game equipment, and update supplies and items for every level. One misconception is that our game ticket sales go directly to the football program; they do not! The money from our ticket gate goes to the school s general athletic fund and is a tremendous source for all school athletic programs. If you have any other ideas for fundraising or would like to serve on a fundraising committee, please let us know. We are always interested in hearing different ideas for how we can keep the fees low for our players. Strength and Conditioning All Wildcat football players will be required to participate in our SUPERCAT weight- training program throughout the entire year. A proven in- season and off- season strength and conditioning program is essential to the success of any football program. Beyond making each player bigger, faster and stronger, it helps to prevent injury. Since one of the purposes in strength training for football is to help avoid injuries, the need to maintain all such development actually increases as the season goes on. The loss of this strength could increase the chance of injury. All football players will be required to be involved in our year- round program. We adhere to the core lift and ground based principles instituted by successful major college strength programs. Our off- season program starts after the holiday break in January and is held four days per week immediately after school or in the 6 th period weights class. We continue during the summer and throughout our season to help build the total athlete. Players will work closely with our Strength and Conditioning Coach Adam Seipel who has a B.S. in Kinesiology and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (N.S.C.A.). Adam will design and implement the weekly strength and conditioning programs during the in- season and off- season. Communication Methods to Parents The DVHS coaching staff will make every attempt to keep our players and their parents/guardians up to date on football program issues and events. 14

We have FIVE ways of communicating with parents and players. They are , Website, Instagram and Twitter. 1. s: If you are not receiving s on a regular basis please be sure that your is updated with the program level head coach. 2. Website: Please refer to the website regularly. Significant information is available including game schedules, rosters, meetings, training schedules etc. The web address is 3. Instagram: Instagram can be accessed from our website or by following us at dvhsfootball. 4. Twitter: Sign up for Twitter through our website or follow us at Wildcat Football@FootballDVHS. 5. Mobile App: With an Android or IPhone, download DVHS Wildcat Football for the App. Expectations of DVHS Coaches What Players Can Expect From Their Coaches 1. To be loyal to you in all areas. 2. To be totally honest! 3. To provide leadership and training necessary to achieve our goals. 4. To work you harder than you have ever worked before. 5. To assist you in any way possible now and after graduation. 6. To treat you as an adult and to respect you. 7. To make all decisions predicated on what is best for the team and then what is best for the individual. 8. To do everything within our power to make this the best place in California to go to school and to play football. 9. To help you mature and grow as an adult. 10. To help you reach your goals. What Parents Can Expect From Coaches 1. To care for your child. 2. To be totally honest! 3. To attempt to bring out the very best in your child on and off the football field. 4. To establish and maintain an open line of communication. 5. To assist you in any way possible with your child. 6. To make all decisions predicated on what is best for the team and then what is best for your child. Expectations for WILDCAT Parents 1. Sportsmanship: If parents hope for their children to carry positive sportsmanship then parents must model sportsmanship during competition for their children. 15

2. Teamwork: Parents must encourage a team first mentality by encouraging their child to take the high road and not allow them to have their own pity party. 3. Encouragement: Parents should encourage their child to have fun. 4. Life Lessons: Parents should help their child learn life lessons that can be learned from participation in football, such as overcoming adversity. Help them learn to deal with the disappointment of not making a team, or not playing the role which they had their hearts set on. The first question that should be asked by a parent when they observe the disappointment of their child is have you spoken to the coach? If not, then please encourage them to do so. 5. Character: Respect for other parents and other athletes at sporting events. Appropriate concerns to discuss with coaches 1. Concerns regarding your child s mental and physical status. 2. Ways to help your child improve in the activity. 3. Concerns about your child s behavior. Issues not appropriate to discuss with coaches 1. Your child s playing time. (This is always a coach s decision and he is paid to make that decision). 2. Team strategy and play calling. (Again the sole responsibility of the coach). 3. Other student athletes. Parents Attending Practice 1. All practices are open to parents unless otherwise notified. However, it is prudent for parents to stay off the field and not communicate with any players or coaches. The time allocated for practice is short and all attention needs to be on practice. 2. Due to the intense focus and nature of teaching required in the film room, only players and coaches will be allowed to attend film sessions and team meetings. 3. For inventory purposes, Parents are not allowed in the shed to grab any items or pieces of equipment. 4. Also, due to limited space parents will not be able to go into the weight room when the team is lifting. CODE OF COMMUNICATION- Proper steps to take when there is an athletic concern 1. Encourage your child to speak to the coach. 2. If your child is not satisfied the initial conversation, then request a time when you, your child and the coach can sit down and talk. Getting satisfaction doesn t mean getting your way, but it means getting a reasonable answer as to why the coach made the decision that he made. An attempt to talk to the coach before or immediately after a game is ALWAYS inappropriate. Abide by the 24- hour rule. Wait at least twenty- four hours then request the meeting mentioned above. 16

3. If you or your child is not satisfied then it would be appropriate for you to contact the athletic director. The first question the athletic director will ask is have you spoken to the coach? If the answer is yes, then the athletic director will schedule a meeting between the parent, child, and coach to further discuss the issue at hand. Expectations for Players 1. Do what you re supposed to do on and off the field at all times. 2. Be an example of the right kind of individual on and off the field. 3. Commit yourself to excellence! No excuses! 4. Work hard. The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. 5. Develop yourself physically through our weight, agility and conditioning program. 6. Listen to your coaches and follow their instructions. 7. Communicate with the coaches. 8. Work and play as a team. 9. Do not let outside influences be distractions from the team goals or your individual goals. 10. Be a player of integrity, character, commitment and discipline. 11. Respect for coaches: Coaches should receive Coach last name, responses from players when talking to them. Players in return will be treated with respect by their coaches. Whenever a coach is speaking with you, either individually or as a group, you will give him your undivided attention and always establish eye contact with him. The X Rule: X in mathematics is the symbol for the unknown. The X Rule states that if a situation arises that is not mentioned in the rules, the coaching staff, at its discretion, will have the right to determine whether the situation will be tolerated and what the consequences will be for the situation. *Failure to adhere to these expectations and/or conditions could lead to disciplinary action or dismissal from the team* 17

Players and Social Media Communicating on social media, first in the form of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram as well as other forms, is common among young people. A player should not use one of these forms of social media to harass, bully or torment another person in any negative way. Also, players should not post inappropriate pictures or comments that would put the program in jeopardy or portraying Dougherty Valley football as having no class. We ask that all parents monitor what their child is putting on these forms of social media and to educate their child on how to properly use social media in an era of technology and hand held devices. If a player does not abide by these rules there will be consequences, such as taking away playing time or dismissal from the team. Football: More than Just a Game Teamwork The ability to work with others is extremely important in today s world. Commitment Players must be at all practices and follow team rules. Work Ethic Peak physical condition can only be attained through hard work. Pride in Performance A feeling of accomplishment is realized through persistent application of effort. Friendships Lifetime relationships are developed through participation in sports. Achievement Players represent their communities, schools, and families. A feeling of togetherness is experienced. Enthusiasm In order to be successful, both football and life must be approached with enthusiasm. Persistence One learns to get up and go again after being knocked down. Confidence Self- esteem is enhanced through a series of achievements. Athletic Ability The skills essential for football are valuable in other sports. Have Fun! Football is fun to play and exciting to watch. Identity The team provides all participants with a sense of belonging. Courage Performance under pressure helps conquer fear. Challenges Participants learn how to overcome obstacles to success. Better Grades Numerous studies indicate students active in school activities perform better in the classroom. Responsibility The game of football holds individuals accountable for their actions. Success in Life According to the American College Testing Service, participating in high school activities is a major indicator of success later in life. 18
