Play Continues - Army Rugby Union In the immediate post-wwi period, Army shrank back to a small rump of disparate parts a small Permanent Army, a larger but skeletal Militia and a small Reserve. The Australian economy remained depressed. Within the decade, and with the crash on Wall Street banks in October 1929, a world-wide depression began which caused unemployment in Australia to hit 35% by The economy had barely started to recover a decade later when WWII intervened. It was not until the 1950s that the Australian economy began to boom once more on the sheep s back. After the grand success of the 1919 AIF rugby teams, and with the disbandment of the AIF itself, in the 1920s the Royal Military College kept the Army rugby flame burning. Unit teams played throughout the country at large, including the non-traditional rugby states such as Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. Army Rugby - Duntroon One effect during the first half of the post-war decade was a decrease in cadet numbers at Duntroon. In 1920 it was also decided that the competition would be more even if players were of a similar age. The result was, that Duntroon agreed to field a team drawn from the Third and Fourth classes, which meant that during the 1920s both sides recorded wins. Against a background of the depression of the early 1930s, the Royal Military College found itself temporarily relocated to Sydney s Victoria Barracks in Despite a lack of suitable sporting facilities at the Barracks, cadets soon found the availability of local teams meant increasing opportunities for competition. In the six years the College was in Sydney, RMC s First XV played around eighteen games each season, establishing a reputation as an outstanding exponent of the game. In 1931 and 1932 RMC participated in the competition for the Kentwell Cup. From 1933 until its return to Canberra in 1937, the cadets distinguished themselves against public and government school teams, the Hawkesbury River Agricultural College and local army and navy teams. In its first year back in Canberra, the College won the Forsayth Shield and played a series of matches against visiting rugby teams from Sydney also saw the scheduling of a match between the visiting South African Springboks and the College unfortunately cancelled due to an outbreak of German measles. The following year RMC Duntroon joined the Australian Capital Territory Rugby Union Competition and by 1939 was fielding a team in the senior grade and another in the lightweight grade winning the premiership by defeating Canberra s Eastern Suburbs in the final.

Army Rugby to WWII In Western Australia, an Army team was playing in reserve grade by 1931, a year when Army also played against teams from HMAS Australia. By 1933, the Army s Artillery RUC had become a United Services team and had a place on the 1 st Grade championship ladder. No doubt many of them watched Western Australia play the Wallabies en route to their South African tour in May In South Australia, an Army team debuted in the local competition in 1935; by 1938, they were second on the premiership ladder. Games against the South Australian Navy team also continued the traditional rivalry between the two services started at RMC in In Victoria, a Citizen Force team from 37 th and 52 nd Battalions was entered into a 10-strong 1 st Grade competition, along with Navy and Air Force teams. The success of Army and other service teams was so prominent by 1937, that a separate service competition for teams representing the Air Force and Militia was promoted by Victorian RU. A cup valued at more than 100 was made available for perpetual competition among the Service teams. It was even suggested that the competition be arranged as a curtain-raiser to the Interstate and South African matches to be played in Melbourne in June. Even in Tasmania, Army was strong enough by 1938 to field a side in both 1 st and 2 nd Grade competitions. In New South Wales, a strong Artillery RUC had been encouraged by Lieutenant-Colonel G.W.F. Meredith, Officer-in-Charge of the First Heavy Brigade of the Royal Australian Artillery. By 1939, its success was sufficiently recognised to seek entry into the NSW 1 st Grade District Competition. Its application was refused by NSWRU on the basis that the team lists were full. NSWRU suggested an inter-services competition instead, and Army had to be content with continuing in the Sub-District competition, where it played for the Burke Cup. At the same time, many of the Artillery Club men from North Head represented Army in the Inter-Services matches of 1939, in which the Army wore a scarlet jersey. From the triangular series, a Service XV team was chosen to play the Metropolitan Colts XV team in August 1939; all of the Army members were from the Artillery Corps (RAA). In the supporting fixture, the RAA s 2 nd XV from the Metropolitan Sub-District competition (where it was leading the table) played Christian Brothers. In Queensland, Rugby Union was the poor relation of the dominant Rugby League code. In the immediate post-wwi period, Union could not even hold a senior competition, such was the dearth of interest after the highlight of the visit of the 1919 AIF Team, and it wasn t until 1926 that Union was re-established. By 1932, 10,000 spectators watched NSW defeat Queensland 9-8, but it was not until 1937 that the newspapers record an Army team playing a Navy team at

Gregory Terrace in Brisbane. While no doubt some unit rugby union was being played, Army rugby union remained a poor cousin compared to competitions in other States. Army Rugby - WWII The outbreak of war in September 1939 did not unduly curtail sporting activities at Duntroon. Sport was regarded as a vital part of the overall training program and therefore rugby continued essentially unchanged. While it was more difficult to organize matches against external teams, cadets had many opportunities to participate in intra-collegiate games, particularly against the officers training wing. Though the traditional Forsayth Shield rugby game was not held in 1940, it resumed in 1941 and continued throughout the war with RMC Duntroon winning in 1941, 1942, 1943 and In 1945 the question of competing football codes (Australian Rules and Rugby) caused some controversy when a West Australian senator asked why cadets were not permitted to play Australian Rules. The official response from Duntroon not only argued that rugby was the game played in the areas most cadets came from, but that much of the standing of the College was associated with the success of its rugby teams considered to be amongst the best in the nation. Following the end of the war in 1945 cadet numbers began to increase and by 1950 Duntroon had three rugby grounds and four teams. Rugby was going from strength to strength. Forsayth Shield games continued - though not without controversy surrounding the ages and abilities of the cadets compared with the Sydney school boys. In other parts of the Army, rugby union was revitalised by wartime preparation and activity, as club and representative rugby players enlisted in the services. In Sydney, AIF teams were selected to play Metropolitan teams in a fund-raiser matches for Patriotic Funds in August 1940, while an AIF team from Redbank Camp in Brisbane played Queensland in August Unit and formation teams, with artillery teams prominent, were formed and inter-unit sport was given especial emphasis as Australians trained for war. These matches often had Australian, State and 1 st Grade club players in them. With the despatch of the 2 nd AIF overseas, a replay of the 1919 Paris match against the French Army was played out in Beirut, in then Syria, on 28 th April The AIF team was selected following a Possibles vs. Probables exhibition match in Tel Aviv in Palestine the week before. Seven thousand spectators saw the AIF Team defeat the French Army champion team, the Marsouins, 11-5, after the French led 5-3 at half-time.

The Australians wore a green jersey with a gold rising sun on the chest, although other reports stated a royal blue jersey was worn. The Australian team comprised Maxwell, Frank Hassett a former RMC player - McElhone, Movicker, Richard Featherstonehaugh, (Captain) Basil Jika Travers, and W. H. Travers, Leslie Matchett and Wand, Long, Campbell, Louis Loughran, Dunbar, Donald Jackson a former RMC player and (vice-captain) Edward Weary Dunlop. On the eve of the match, Travers said that the team had not had as much training as would normally be considered necessary for such an important game, but every player was fit and keen. "We are meeting a team which has many internationals in it," he said, "but I am confident that the French Army will not have a walk-over. I believe they play a fast, open game, which should suit our Australian play." During the war, rugby matches were played everywhere, at home and abroad. Prior to the military defeat of the Allied Forces in Singapore at the hands of the Japanese, the Singapore-Johore rugby team, sprinkled with leading Australian Service players players, including two Wallabies now with the AIF, defeated the British Army team In February 1941, a 42-team, sevenaside tournament took place at Alexandria in Egypt, in which four Australian teams (two from the AIF) took part. In January 1942 the New Zealanders defeated the AIF side at Gezirah in Egypt, the enzeds winning 11-3, although both sides were suffering from the effects of an extra large helping of Christmas duff. Matches continued in Australia between Commands, formations and units. In Western Australia, Army rugby flourished under Major General Horace C.H. Robertson (founder of the ACT Rugby Union and better known as Red Robbie ) in a competition with 43 unit teams. These included a winning Armoured Brigade team among others, including two American teams. In June 1944, an Army XV played New South Wales players included the 1941 AIF team captain from Beirut, Captain Basil. H. Jika Travers: A visit to the Army Rugby team s camp at the Showground revealed that the Army men in training, in typical Aussie style, are already cobbers in the best sense. Rank counts for nothing as the men eat, sleep and play together officer, non-com and private alike.the Old A.I.F. won a reputation on account of their magnificent physique, but the 1944 A.I.F. forwards will dwarf the former Anzacs

The Army XV in the interservice competition in NSW for the Stan McCabe Cup 1945 AWM Army Rugby - Post WWII In the aftermath of WWII, rugby continued but perhaps without the same intensity without the name players, who were returning to their clubs and State sides. A mid-week union of 17 teams was revived in Sydney in early 1946 which included an Army team. In 1946 a New South Wales United Services side toured Victoria. In 1948, a South Australian Army side defeated Victoria. RMC again won the ACT 1 st Grade premiership in In 1950 Army played teams from the Eastern Suburbs RUC in Sydney, while Western Suburbs played a United Services side in Meanwhile, competition between the three services for the McCabe Cup continued. Overseas, in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) in Japan and in Korea, rugby also flourished. A unique competition took place in the BCOF when teams from Australia, Britain, New Zealand and India competed for the Duntroon Cup, presented by graduates of RMC Duntroon on duty with the BCOF. The competition and cup was the idea of the Commander-in-Chief of the BCOF, Australia s now Lieutenant-General H. C. H. Robertson. One infantry captain wrote: In the Occupation Force rugby is very popular, the main drawback being the lack of good grounds. Many games are played on unit parade grounds, which usually have no grass on them whatsoever. Even small gravel rashes soon fester, and poisoned limbs are quite common. This seldom dampens interest though. From Korea, Australia and New Zealand Army teams played in a match organised in Japan. It appeared that the Australian team was comprised of RMC graduates Maj. J.W. Norrie (formerly coach at RMC), Lt. R. Grey (1951), Capt.

B. Trenerry (1944), Lt. F. C. Smith (1951), Lt. R. Hutton (1950), Lt. A. L. Limburg (1951), Lt. J. W. Black (1951), Maj. R. Sutton (1942 [?]), Capt. B. Poanango (N.Z. graduate attached to 3 Battalion, RAR), Maj. W. J. Morrow (1941), Lt. J. A. Hooper (1951) and Capt. A. Hutchinson (1947). A 1 RAR rugby match in the snow in Korea AWM Two other RMC graduates were noted in Korea. Lieutenant William Brian James (1951) who was awarded the Military Cross, represented the College at Rugby Union in 1948 and captained the New South Wales Services team against the visiting Fijian side in Sydney in Lieutenant Colin Nadar Kahn (1951) had led the RMC Rugby Union team in 1951and was a Canberra representative in rugby union. As captain of Scots College team he represented GPS against RMC in 1947, and four years later played for Duntroon against GPS. He was seriously wounded in Korea, but would retain a lifelong interest in the game. The 1950s had arrived, and a new era for Army Rugby in Australia. Duntroon was once again to be at the forefront of rugby success, continuing its role as the nursery for many future prominent Army rugby players.
