1 Rugby 1 st XV Sport Boys The photo was sent in by Jacqueline Leonard. The names have been provided by Peter Fisher. Thank you. Back Row L-R: Alan Ousley, Dave Whitehead, Sam (Brian) Hughes, Mr. Leonard, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Senior, Brian Secker, Mick Fry, Arthur Warden Middle Row L-R: Chuck Allan, James Stead, Bernard Milner, Peter Schofield, Keith Bruce, Eric Sale, Geoff Manning Front Row L-R: Terry O Marr, Peter Fisher Overcoming very poor conditions at times and nearly always playing good open football, the 1 st XV, despite being handicapped by injuries, have had a very successful season. Much credit for this success must go to the backs and to the close marking of their opponents by all members of the team. Poor weather conditions resulting in hard grounds have caused a dozen or more matches to be cancelled, particularly for the 2 nd XV and Junior XV. The 2 nd XV have not shown the co-ordination expected of a team and this is reflected in their results. The Colts and Junior XVs have shown greater enthusiasm and have had more success than they had last year. These young players are our 1 st XV s in the making and we feel sure that the School s Rugger reputation and great tradition will be in safe hands. We would like to thank all memhers of the staff who have given up so much time to coaching the teams, Mr. Rhodes, the groundsman and Mr. Cliffe for refreshments. Team Played Won Lost Drawn For Against Ist XV nd XV Colts XV Junior XV MILNER, B. This is his third season as school Full Back. He is fast, can gather cleanly and punt accurately. This season, unfortunately, he seems to have lost some of the energy which made him outstanding in previous years. Half Colours. WHITEHEAD, D. A newcomer to School rugby. He is very keen - and with more experience should do well. He runs hard on the wing but his tackling is sometimes at fault. Half Colours. SALE. E. A prominent member of this year s team. Playing centre-three-quarter he has the ability to beat a man with ease. His tackling is very sound indeed. Treasurer. Repeat Full Colours. BRUCE, K. A good centre. In both attack and defence he is very reliable. His goal kicking abilities have been extremely welcome. Vice-Captain. Repeat Full Colours. POOLE, M. A penetrating wing three-quarter. He runs hard and straight, but should back up a little more. Secretary. Half Colours. STEAD, J. An excellent outside half. His acceleration when receiving the ball is outstanding. He is extremely elusive in attack and his football sense is so keen that he sometimes deceives his own side as well as his opponents. Repeat Full Colours. BIRKINSHAW, C. The smallest member of the team playing in probably the roughest position (scrum half). He combines very well with his outside half. Unfortunately he has missed part of the season through injury. Half Colours.

Front Row L-R: Maurice Poole, Peter Fisher, Christopher Birkinshaw, Michael Fry, Alan Ouseley. FROST, R. A sound centre three-quarter who has played both forward and three-quarter this season. Half Colours. OUSELEY, A. A hard working prop-forward. He gets through a tremendous amount of work in the loose and line-out. Half Colours. FRY, M. After a shaky start at the beginning of the season he settled down as a hooker, and performed his main task (to get the ball) admirably. In the line-out he is overshadowed mainly through his lack of height, but in the loose he is usually where he is needed. WARDEN, A. A good prop-forward who binds very well in the tight, helping his hooker to a great extent. In the loose lie is very sound. ALLEN, J. A strong second-row-forward. In the line-out he uses his height to great effect and in the loose is always up with the ball. Full Colours. HUGHES, S. Partnering Allen in the second row he helps to form an extremely stable pair. In line-out work and in the loose he is very good. Half Colours. FISHER, P. A fast and quick-throwing loose forward who covers the opposing scrum-half very well. His main fault is that he tends to break a little too soon. Full Colours. O MARR, T. A back forward who works very hard both in tight and loose. His tackling is good and he handles the ball well. Half Colours. MANNING, G. The scrum leader. Always tip with the play and his skill in getting the backs into motion has been very profitable. Full Colours. Schofield, P. U6S (Captain) SCHOFIELD, P. Captain for the second year in succession. Injuries kept him out of most of the games before Christmas. On the field he is a tower of strength and is the best wing-three quarter we have had for many years. Since Christmas he has adapted himself to the position of scrum half to replace the injured Birkinshaw. Repeat Full Colours. W.J.L.

Huddersfield Sports 1952 The Annual Inter-School Sports were held on the 9 th July and Mrs. Butterworth presented the trophies to the winning schools. The standard of athletics was particularly high, and although the boys were a little disappointed at not completing the hat trick - they won the W.R.C.C. Shield in 1950 and they did well to be runners-up on a day when 19 of the 30 records were broken. The School tied with Normanton for the Senior Boy s Plaque and won the Junior Plaque. The most outstanding of the school s athletes were Lodge K., who put up very creditable performances in the sprints, Trueman T., who made a new record for the Senior High Jump, and Homer R., who broke the Junior Boy s 220 yds. record. The girls again showed a slight improvement on the efforts of the previous year and finished in 3 rd position. M. Butterfield won both the Senior High Jump and Long Jump events, while Joan Taylor won the Intermediate High Jump.

School Sports The School Sports Day was held on the 16 th July and the large number of parents who came to the school were not disappointed in the afternoon s sports. The only events in which records were broken were the Junior Relay Race - won by Price - and the Intermediate quarter-mile, which was won by Pearson in 59.7 seconds. There were, however, two records established in the Pole Vault, which was introduced to the school last year. Downes won the Senior event with a jump of 8 ft. 4 inches, while Hudson F. won the event for boys under 15 years of age with a jump of 6 ft. 7½ inches. The fight for the Sports Cup was a keen one, and Talbot House only just managed to hold on to a very slight lead while Price House made a great effort to overtake them, an effort which gained them the Relay Cup. The trophies were presented by Alderman Flavell, this being the last of our Annual School Sports that he was to attend as Chairman of the Governors. Awards Senior Victrix Ludorum F. Crossley. Senior Victor Ludorum Lodge, K. S. Junior Victrix Ludorum J. Taylor. Junior Victor Ludorum Pearson. Half-mile Cup Pearson. Mile Cup Graham. Sports Cup Talbot. Standards Cup Price. Relay Cup Price. Triangular Athletics Match at Pontefract. On July 17 th the boys took part in a triangular athletics match which was held at Pontefract. The other schools competing were King s School, Pontefract and Normanton Grammar School. Although we were beaten into 3 rd place, the school s performance, particularly in the sprints, was quite good considering that the match took place on the day after the School Sports.
9 Yorkshire Schools A.A. Championships. Last year the Y.S.A.A. Championships were held at Hull, and a small number of the school s athletes joined forces with three other schools and competed as Ackworth and District Schools A.A. Those from our school who gained places were Florence Crossley, who won the Senior Girls 100 yards Championship, Roy Frost, who was second in the Senior Boys Javelin and Herbert James, who finished second in the quarter-mile championship. Florence Crossley, Yorkshire Senior Girls 100 yards Champion 1952 Yorkshire Youths and Junior Championships. The championships were held during the holidays and this prevented many of our best athletes from competing. Wall P., however, was placed 3 rd in the Youth s Pole Vault and Trueman T. received a standard certificate for the Youth s High Jump. Herbert James, U6S.
