Foto: Renette Stofberg Rayno Blomerus Paul Roos se eerste hokkiespan het vanjaar as verdedigende kampioen in die finaal van die Cape Town International Schools Hockey Festival (20 tot die 24 Julie) ná n verbluffende eindpoging vir Wynberg met 3-0 geklop en sodoende wraak geneem vir hulle 1-4 nederlaag teen genoemde skool vroeër vanjaar. Die titel is dus weer eens Paul Roos s n, en spankaptein Andrew Hobson is aangewys as Speler van die Toernooi. Dewaldt Raath, Liam Conradie en Janlu Nieuwoudt het elkeen tydens die toernooi hul 50ste wedstryde vir die eerste span gespeel. Die span het in die kwarteindronde Worcester Gimnasium met 6-0 gewen, en in die semifinale ronde met 3-1 teen en toe teen Somerset College 3-1 gesëvier. Verdere hokkienuus is dat een van die kompeterende spanne hom aan die toernooi onttrek het en dat Paul Roos toe die geleentheid gekry het om nog n span in te skryf n uitnodigingspan span bestaande uit Graad 9, 10 en 11 s bestaan. In die SA O/18B-span is daar nie minder nie as drie Paul Roosers: Antonie Small- Smith, Janlu Nieuwoudt en Migali Giagas. William Eveleigh en Andrew Hobson is albei verkies tot die SA-skolehokkiespan en Andrew is ook aangewys as die kaptein van die span.

2 Uitgawe/Issue 278 Concipio Page 2 The 2016 South African Municipal elections are drawing near and on Wednesday 3 August all registered South African citizens above the age of 18 will have the chance to vote. Political parties have made it their mission to cover every lamppost from Polokwane to Pringle Bay with campaign posters like dogs marking out their territory. During the past few months the African National Congress has been ploughing through all manners of criticism on their taxpayer-funded yacht while they search for new ways of clinging to their two-decade-old accomplishments and of hiding their scandals of recent years. It has, however, become quite apparent that a R250-million homestead is not very easily concealed. The Democratic Alliance and the Men in Red have tried their best to surf the scandalous wake of the ruling party s boat by pointing out the ANC s shortcomings and taking the Van Agter die Skoolbank term thrash throwing to a new (and not-so-figurative) level in the case of the EFF. Local radio waves are saturated with DA propaganda and slander aimed at the ANC, yet not a single reason was given as to why the DA deserves the public vote. The DA is very effective in sending ANC voters running for the hills, but these voters are not necessarily running into the desperate arms of Mmusi Maimane. Regardless of your political agenda it is imperative that you vote come next Wednesday. If you re not yet 18, you should convince your parents to do so in your stead, because the only way of keeping politicians accountable for their actions is by voting. As a citizen of the Republic of South Africa you have the responsibility towards your fellow South Africans to vote for a better South Africa where our differences are celebrated and not used to create racial divides between different cultural groups. The polls show the DA retaining the Western Cape and possibly clinching one or two Metropolitan municipalities such as City of Tshwane in Gauteng or Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape. The Economic Freedom Fighters have strong support in both North West and Limpopo provinces and Julius Malema is confident that they could take one of these two provinces. The mighty ANC empire seems to be crumbling as it faces onslaught from the north and the south. Polls show the ruling party losing support in almost every municipality to the opposition parties snapping at their heels. Not to worry, though, says President Zuma, because his party will rule until Jesus returns to earth. It seems the long lost prodigal son may be coming home a little too early for the likes of some. After an outstanding campaign, they went on to conquer the Lions in the finals, It must be said that Province s greatest assets were its lightning-fast backline and a dominant forward pack. Paul Roos star Damian Willemse, a Craven Week veteran, has certainly played a monumental role in the Western Province s success. This can be attributed to his pinpoint tactical kicking and near-perfect passes. Ben-Jason Dixon and Jesse Johnson were prime players, with consistent support to the WP captain, Salmaan Moerat. Tristan Leitch quickly demonstrated his prowess, becoming a true force to reckon with - and a possible top pick for 2017 SA prop. Lyle Hendriks and Aiden Toply represented the winning Western Provence Academy side. Ben-Jason Dixon and Damian Willemse were both selected for the South African U/18 side, alongside eleven other Western Province players. Jesse Johnson was included in the SA A-side, along with one other Western Province player. The U/18 International Fixtures are listed below. The United Nations declared this an international community day in November 2009, recognising Mandela s values and his dedication to the service of humanity and acknowledging his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world. As Paul Roos is part of the world and an engine which produces men of the world, it also did its fair share for Mandela day. The Societas Committee, consisting of nine members and Ms Vermeulen, went to visit the bergies of Stellenbosch to offer them food and comfort. These are the two most needed factors, especially during the winter season. The committee received mental training before the night, to equip them for everything that was coming. It took a huge effort to move out of our comfort zones to help the homeless move out of their danger zones truly a life-changing experience. If you lost track of Mandela Day you can still do your community service with all the other weekly Societas activities. Charl Smit The Societas Committee went on an outreach with Straatlig on 26 July, to do their 67 minutes for Mandela Day. Mandela Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela - on 18 July - Mandela s birthday. The call is out for people everywhere to celebrate his birthday by acting on the idea that each person has the power to change the world. The creation of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London in 2008: It is time, he said, for new hands to lift the burdens. 5 Uitgawe/Issue 278 Concipio Page 5 Alexander Klose Elf Paul Roosers het tydens die afgelope Junievakansie die Evangelie in Malawi gaan verkondig. Die groep is gelei deur mnr. Cobus de Beer. Marius vd Westhuizen en Francois du Plessis, albei in Graad 12, het ook saam met 31 ander jongmanne in Nepal besoek afgelê. Die Malawi-groep het Suid-Afrika op 23 Junie verlaat en op 5 Julie teruggekeer. Volgens mnr. de Beer was die hooffokus van dié uitreik om die FCE-sendingstasie (Foundation for Cross-cultural Education), en die sendelinge daar te help. Dit was ook n uitstekende geleentheid om by mense van reg oor die wêreld te leer. Alles het egter nie altyd volgens plan Nothing grows in the comfort zone verloop nie. Twee tasse is gesteel nadat diewe die tente met n mes oopgesny het. Een van die tasse het belangrike dokumente bevat, wat almal gelukkig tydens die rooftog uitgeval en weer gevind is. Afgesien van die eet van vreemde diere en die 15km-reis agter op n bakkie vir een en n halwe uur, het die seuns geleer om na mense uit te reik en hulle met die Evangelie te bedien. Daar is ook met die hulp van n vertaler uitgegaan om deur-tot-deur-bediening te doen. Marius en Francois het saam met 31 ander sendelinge na Nepal op 24 Junie vertrek en op 11 Julie teruggekeer. Die groep het in totaal 70 km te voet afgelê. Volgens Marius het die groep dit moelik gevind om tydens die staptog moed te hou in die versengende hitte. Vir hom was dit ook n groot aanpassing om te aanvaar dat nie almal noodwendig vir Jesus wil aanneem nie aangesien hul vroegtydig in hul lewe deur hul ouers daarteen gewaarsku is. Tydens die uitreik moes die groep altesaam tien vlugte beleef, waarvan vier vertraag was. Die manne het saamgestaan, vasgebyt en daarop gefokus om geluk te kies. Sokkerwedstryde in die reën en rissie-eetkompetisies het hierdie doelwit ongetwyfeld vergemaklik. Paul Roosers wat uitreik na ander lande deur die Evangelie te verkondig, keer terug om dit wat geleer is, hier te kom deel. Na 150 jaar slaag Paul Roos Gimnasium dus nog steeds daarin om as n sendingskool in Suid-Afrika te dien. Etienne Britz Pokémon Go is a mobile game which has revived our immediate areas. Its general aim is to introduce the longrunning Pokémon game series to the mainstream masses while simultaneously appealing to fans and people who are already familiar with the franchise. The game is developed by Niantic, a game company relatively new to the m o b i l e gaming scene. The licensing rights to the game maintain exclusivity to Nintendo systems (Pokémon G o being the obvious exception). The premise of the game is quite simple. You are a Pokémon trainer and your end goal is to catch as many Pokémon as possible. The big catch, however, is that you re not in a digital world. In order to find and catch Pokémon, you are required to go through the tedious task of having to go outside for once. After you ve taken this big leap, you ll be greeted with a GPS interface which displays a realistic map of your current location. As you walk further, you ll encounter Pokémon alongside your path which you can catch with your limited amount of Pokéballs and a flick of your finger. If you re lucky enough to be living in an urban area, you ll most likely find many Pokéstops and gyms around your location. Pokéstops are areas which are mostly located at points of interest around your city or town. When you reach these areas you can get different items like extra Pokéballs, incense (which is used to attract Pokémon to your location) and eggs which you can incubate to breed more Pokémon. When you reach level 5 in the game, you will be prompted to join one of three teams: Mystic, Valour and Instinct. This is where gyms come in. When a gym is empty, someone can put their own Pokémon inside and the gym will automatically be represented by the team that the player has chosen. Members of that team will be able to add more and more Pokémon to the gym, whereas players who have joined another team have the power to battle the Pokémon in the gym and attempt to overtake it for their own team. People on the same team can decide to team up and eventually take the gym for themselves. If the hype around Pokémon Go hasn t already encouraged you to try the game out for yourself, then I hope that my recommendation will finally get you to download it. Despite some early-stage bugs and glitches, Pokémon Go is splendid and is sure to please fans and newcomers alike.

7 Uitgawe/Issue 278 Concipio Page 7 I can be your Euro baby Jiptoer 2016 Jaco Marais In Junie vanjaar het ongeveer 50 sewentien- en agtienjariges van skole oor die Wes-Kaap op die jaarlikse JipToer op soek warmer weer aan Europa toe vertrek. Dié toer, gereël deur Temba Jeugtoere wat ook die Kalahari Vasbyt organiseer, se doel is om tieners n onvergeetlike drie weke lank in Europa te laat toer en soveel as moontlik daarvan te sien en te beleef. Daar word sterk gefokus op vrye tyd, om oorsee onafhanklik jou eie weg te vind en om self te besluit wat jy wil doen en besoek. Vanjaar was die twee Paul Roosers op die toer Hannes Lups (Graad 11) en Jaco Marais (Graad 11). Die toer begin in London, waar buitengewone besienswaardighede Buckingham-paleis, die London Eye, Westminster Abdy, die London Dungeons, Big Ben en Piccadilly Circus insluit. n Mens voel in dié chaotiese stad soms soos die mense van Divergent wat rondhardloop om op die ondergrondse treine te spring voor die deure toemaak. Die stad is propvol geskiedenis, maar ook baie modern en vol jong mense. Na drie dae in Londen vertrek ons met n oornag-veerboot na Amsterdam, die stad van klompe, fietse en poffertjies (waarskynlik die lekkerste ding wat jy ooit gaan eet). Daar besoek ons die Van Gogh-museum en leer ken die geskiedenis van bier by die oudste Heineken-brouery ter wêreld. Ons verken ook die stad te fiets (en probeer om nie omgery te word nie). In Parys besoek ons die Arc de Triomphe, die Versailles-paleis en natuurlik die Eiffeltoring, waar ons een aand piekniek hou. Vir twee dae loop ons rond sonder om een woord Frans te verstaan, maar die Franse kook- en bakvernuf maak dit darem meestal die moeite werd. Van hier vertrek ons na Lucerne in Switserland. Hoë, sneeubedekte berge toring oral om jou. Die Switsers se self-dissipline, netheid en trots op hul omgewing is ongelooflik. Paul Roosers kan gerus by hulle leer. Van hier af begin die temperature erg styg. In Nice, Frankryk, kry ons drie dae van niks anders nie as vrye tyd ongetwyfeld n hoogtepunt van die toer, met kilometers asuurblou see, klippiestrande en gesellige restaurante in die historiese gedeelte van die stad. Hier ervaar ons hoe die Fraanse sokkerliefhebbers te kere gaan wanneer hul span n semi-finaal in die Uefa Euro Championship 16 wen amper net so vol gees soos Paul Roosers wat Grey op Markötter verpletter. Ons besoek ook Monaco se bekende F1- wedrenbaan en kyk hoe word dinge deur die rykste mense in die wêreld gedoen. Die somer in Italië word ondraaglik warm, soos ons in van Venisië en Rome agterkom. In Rome besoek ons die Colosseum en die Vatikaanstad. Die stapelvoedsel hier is vir seker pizza en roomys (egte Italiaanse gelato), wat eenvoudig op n totale ander vlak is as in ons land. Die toer word afgesluit by Sorrento, met n bootrit rondom die eiland Capri aan die suid-italiaanse kus. Die opvoedkundige waarde en lewenslesse wat op die toer geleer word, sal vir die res van ons lewens met ons bly. Jy kry die geleentheid om saam met mense van dieselfde ouderdom as volwassenes gehanteer te word en baie wêreldkennis op te doen. n Belangrike aspek is dat die toerleiers die jongmense se belange op die hart dra en hulle vertrou met die vryheid n vakansie vir die boeke die avontuur van n leeftyd!
