2 RECREATION Fall Youth Flag Football Leagues Ages 4-14 This is a fun, recreation league that plays non-contact, 5 v 5 games for boys and girls. Leagues focus on learning skills, game fundamentals, making friends, and having fun. Games are played on a 60-yard field where the basics of football are learned and good sportsmanship is promoted. There will be one practice a week with Saturday games. Fee: Resident: $85 Non-resident: $98 Registration deadline: Sunday, July 22 Practices begin the week of August 13. 3 Messenger Summer/Fall 12 RECREATION GUIDE Youth Sports Youth Sports Introductory Lacrosse Program Grades K-8 There s no better way to learn the game and proper use of a lacrosse stick than an introductory lacrosse clinic for new players. This is a four-week introductory program. Lacrosse sticks will be provided. Black Friday Baseball Camp Ages 8 & Older This is a one-day developmental baseball camp for baseball enthusiasts. Designed for the beginner to intermediate ballplayer, camp participants will learn the fundamentals of running, infield and outfield skills, throwing and hitting from HitStreak s professional staff. Cross Country Youth Lacrosse Leagues Spring 2013 This program provides youth a recreational distance running experience in a fun, age-appropriate, and skill development based atmosphere. Fee: Resident: $65 Non-resident: $75 Teams will compete in five meets during the season (Saturdays or Sundays) starting September 15 through late October. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays starting August 21, from 6-7 p.m. at Redstone Park. Meet host sites, dates and distances for events have not yet been determined. Events will be offered to boys and girls age seven-14, based on age as of October 31, Boys and girls will compete in separate gender and age divisions (8 & under, 9/10; 11/12; 13/14). Youth Inline Hockey The Highlands Ranch Metro District has partnered with fellow metro area parks and recreation agencies to offer an inline hockey league for youth ages seven to 18. This eight-week league was created to be a program with a strong recreational format. Each team will practice once a week with Saturday games. Games will be held in Highlands Ranch and at surrounding metro area rinks. Fee: Resident: $60 Non-resident: $69 Registration ends Sunday, August 5 Practices begin the week of August 13. NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition Wednesday, September 12 Register at the event beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Redstone Park South Green. This skills competition is open to both boys and girls ages six through 15 (age as of December 31, 2012). Winners from each local competition (one winner from each of the boys and girls four age groups) will move on to compete at an assigned sectional competition. Players will test their skills in three events: Punting Passing Kicking There are five separate age divisions for both boys and girls: 6 & 7 year olds 8 & 9 year olds 10 & 11 year olds 12 & 13 year olds 14 & 15 year olds Important Each participant must have an on-site parental waiver form and copy of a birth certificate. Only gym shoes may be worn. No football shoes/cleats/turf shoes will be permitted. Youth Sports RECREATION GUIDE The Ruler of the Railzz skateboard competition at Redstone Skate Park provides a competitive event for all skaters in the Denver Metro area. This annual event brings out local skaters to compete for the top spot in this area. The contest is open to all ages and abilities with six different divisions in which to participate. However, registration will also be accepted on site beginning at 11:30 a.m. The event is open to the first 15 skaters per division. You must be registered by noon to compete. 5 Messenger Summer/Fall 12 RECREATION GUIDE Youth Sports Youth Sports Skyhawks Sports Camps Registration for Skyhawks programs will be accepted until camp is full or seven days before the camp starts. Skyhawks provides a wide variety of fun, safe and positive programs that emphasize critical lessons in sports and life, such as teamwork, respect and sportsmanship. Skyhawks programs are designed to give each child a positive introduction into sports while fostering a lifelong love for an active, healthy lifestyle. Skyhawks patient and knowledgeable staff use a variety of skill-building games and activities to give each athlete a complete understanding and overview of the sport. Since 1979 Skyhawks has taught more than one million boys and girls life lessons through sports and the experienced and well-trained staff makes Skyhawks what it is the best athletic provider anywhere! Each camp includes quality instruction, t-shirt and merit award. Skyhawks participants should bring appropriate clothing, a water bottle, two snacks, running shoes and sunscreen to each camp. Baseball, basketball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environment filled with encouragement and fun. Through games and activities, campers explore balance, hand/eye coordination, and skill development at their own pace. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 8:1. Northridge Park August 6-10 Activity # G...Redstone Park Ages 5 9 Cheerleading Skyhawks Cheerleading teaches the essential skills to lead crowds and support the home team! There is no stunting in this entry level program just a big focus on fun while each cheerleader learns proper hand & body movements and jumping techniques. The week concludes with a choreographed performance. All participants receive pom-poms. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 14:1. Cheerleading camps are held from 9 a.m. until Noon. July 30 - August 3 Activity # D...Northridge Park Beginning Golf Campers will learn the fundamentals of swinging, putting, and body positioning. Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system to its curriculum. SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy and effective transition onto the golf course. All equipment provided. The golf camp will be utilizing golf helmets for protection. This is a fundamental golf camp. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 8:1. Golf camps are held from 9 a.m. until Noon. Campers learn skills on both sides of the football including the core components of passing, catching, and defense all presented in a fun and positive environment. The week will end with the Skyhawks Sports Bowl! This is a great camp for those kids interested in playing in the Highlands Ranch Metro District youth flag football leagues. Falcon Park... 9 a.m. - noon 14 Ages 6 10 Basketball This fun, skill-intensive program is designed for the beginning to intermediate player. Using our progressional curriculum, staff focus on the whole player, teaching respect, teamwork and responsibility. An active week of passing, shooting, dribbling, and rebounding makes this one of our most popular programs. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 10:1. July activity # D... Toepfer Park... 9 a.m. - noon Ages 6 12 Soccer Developed over a span of 30 years, this is the number one soccer camp for parents looking to introduce their children to the fundamentals of the world s most popular sport. Using our progressional curriculum, your young athlete will gain the technical skills and sport knowledge required for that next step into soccer. Participants must bring shin guards. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 14:1. 9 a.m. - noon July activity # F...Marcy Park Track & Field Skyhawks Track & Field combines technical development, fundamental techniques, and safety with a major focus on fun! Using special equipment, our staff teach the fundamentals of body positioning, stride, proper stretching, and cool-down techniques. Participants put it all together for one fun-filled day at the Skyhawks track meet! These are learning camps not training camps. The participant-to-coach ratio is approximately 14:1. Track & Field camps are held from 9 a.m. until Noon. July activity # B... Plum Valley Park Ages 6 12 Lacrosse Suit up and find out why lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Lacrosse combines the basic skills used in soccer, basketball and hockey into one fast-paced, high-scoring game. Athletes will learn all the fundamentals of stick handling, cradling, passing, and shooting in a fun, nonchecking environment. Participants must bring their own protective gloves, mouthpiece, helmet with full mask, and a lacrosse stick. Need equipment? 6 Adult Sports Golf 101 for Adults Ages 18 & older The Metro District and The Links Golf Course have teamed up to offer you a way to learn or improve your game in a fun setting. All aspects of the game will be covered from the full swing to short game and putting. The class will meet for one hour and 15 minutes each week for four weeks. Classes will be held Wednesdays at the Links Golf Course in Highlands Ranch. Fee: Resident: $165 Non-resident: $190 Space is limited to 12 per class, so sign up now! Unless otherwise noted, all classes will have the following fee: Resident: $10 Non-resident: $12 Group Rate Programs (three or more): Resident: $6/person Non-resident: $7/person Map and Compass Treasure Hunt Ages 8-12 Lewis and Clark were important explorers who helped map the United States. Learn how to read a map, orient yourself, and find various sites using a map and compass just like these famous explorers. Find hidden treasures on an exciting scavenger hunt in the open space. All participants will get to keep their found treasures as well as a compass! An accompanying adult is required to come along, partner with the child and learn. Fee: Resident: $15 Non-resident: $17 Activity # B Sunday, July p.m. Northridge Park Class maximum: 12 Junior Rangers Ages 7-10 The Junior Ranger Program was created for kids to learn about life as a Metro District Park Ranger in Highlands Ranch. Your child will learn about fire, community, wildlife, flora, and recreation. Upon completion of the program, a t-shirt and certificate will be awarded. 10 Outdoor Volunteer Opportunities Healthy Steps Get Active, Live Healthy! The Metro District founded the Healthy Steps program to get you on the trail to a more active lifestyle. Register now and you will receive a pedometer, log book, walking suggestions, and a Highlands Ranch Outdoor Map & Guide that shows all of the great trails and parks where you can get your steps. You ll also be able to connect with other walkers through our optional walking partner list, posted on our website. To register for Healthy Steps, please call Brenda Willcutt, at or bwillcutt@highlandsranch.org. Fee: Resident: $10 Non-resident: $12 Activity # A Trash for Treasures Trash for Treasures offers the opportunity for groups and organizations to help keep our special places clean. During this one-hour event, a Metro District Ranger will present a brief talk about environmental stewardship, the reason trash is harmful to our natural areas, wildlife living in the area and participant safety. Trash bags and disposable gloves will be provided. After the clean-up, Metro District staff will provide refreshments and a small treasure to all participants younger than 10 years old. A prize will also be available to the participant making the best effort during the clean-up. Scheduling for this program is Tuesday through Saturday. The group leader will choose the day and area to clean up. A minimum of two weeks is required to schedule your group.
