MINI MATTERS Week 9 Sunday 30th October 2016 Hello Datchworth Mini Section Coaches, Managers, Players, Parents and Supporters, As the half term break comes to an end for most it was a busy weekend this week for the Mini Section; the U6 and U7 age group enjoyed a team-building event at St Albans Fire Station on Saturday lunchtime which was well supported and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Chris Thompson for arranging the visit which was a great success. On Sunday we had a really enjoyable fixture over at Leighton Buzzard; the longer than usual journey was rewarded with a very warm and well organised welcome from our hosts. Speaking to most age groups after the fixture everyone reported a competitive, fair and well organised morning which was great to hear and we will hopefully look forward to playing Leighton Buzzard again at Datchworth either later this Season or early next. U6 s Datchworth Training The events of the weekend are detailed below... The U6 s were blessed with a quiet car park and a dry day, lots of fun was had with games and training style activities. Congratulations to one of our new players Cameron, who won player of the week. Thank you to the coaches, players and parents for your support. Next week the rest of the minis section are at Welwyn while we continue training at Datchworth. U7 s Away at Leighton Buzzard After setting off in fog on Sunday, we arrived at a very sunny Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club. Despite the distance and it being half term, the U7s had a fantastic turn out. Our squad split into three teams with each of our coaches, Pip, John and Nick, and enthusiastically played some wonderful, well organised rugby against five Leighton Buzzard U7 teams. We are very proud of all our players as despite it being our only second fixture, they tagged brilliantly, supported their team mates and most importantly, scored lots of well-

deserved tries. All three teams had brilliant defensive lines which Leighton Buzzard found really hard to break. Well done to our U7 players and thank you so much to our parents for bringing their children along. And a massive congratulations to our Player of the week, Owen for showing great leadership qualities and knowledge of the game. Well done Owen!! We meet at Welwyn Rugby Club next week at 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off. U8 s Away at Leighton Buzzard Along with the rest of the mini section, our U8's travelled to Leighton Buzzard. Our gracious host play similar Rugby to Datchworth, we all agreed it was a great fixture. Despite half term, we had 19 strong today so we were able to field 3 teams with rolling subs. Across the 3 teams we saw some great rugby - with prolific tagging and defence and some excellent team tries. Steve W team - For myself, our team saw prolific tagging, great leadership and runs. Our newest player Mattio was thoroughly enjoying himself whilst scoring multiple try s, overall there was great support from everyone, communication was much improved and I must add there was quick and clever passing which was great to see. Kirston - We had three tough games, but we got better as the fixture went on. Across the three games, six halves, we improved every time. The ref who covered our team said he had never seen such improvement half on half across three games... Positives: no forward passes, only one run into touch. Improvements: better spread across the pitch in attack and defence, better defensive line, better tagging, better pace when taking the ball, better pace when passing the ball. Dave - We had 3 tough games also but found our feet quickly and every game was competitive. The progress with support play, pop passing and tagging is evident and all the hard work at training is starting to pay off. I also saw strong leadership and organising which is really positive - a good effort and performance. We meet at Welwyn Rugby Club next week at 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off. U9 s Away at Leighton Buzzard The slightly longer drive to Leighton buzzard was definitely a worthwhile one. The U9s had just 2 teams out due to half term holidays and Leighton buzzard were the same so we played 2 slightly longer games and there was some quality rugby on show. Out of the 4 games we won 3 and drew 1 but with the sides evenly matched all the players

enjoyed plenty of action & the games were played in the right spirit. The draw was actually the most pleasing to see as Datchworth were 4 try's to nil down at half time and starting to let their heads go down and bicker a little. After a positive half time chat the boys played the second half back in the right spirit encouraging each other and playing for each other with great determination to get the draw. William grace had a storming game in attack & defence and was awarded the man of the match. Thank you to the parents for doing the extra miles! We look forward to taking on Welwyn next week. 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off U10 s Away at Leighton Buzzard The Under 10's managed to put together enough players this week to play two 6-aside teams for the long trip to the Buzzards, on what looked like a foggy morning back at Datch but turned out to be a hot and sunny affair. We split up into two even sides and had two games each. The greens (Alby, George, Harry, Matthew, Oliver, Tom R) put in some excellent defence and thanks to some excellent runs from Tom R with support across the team managed to win the first game 8-2. The second game was tighter, tied at half time and full time 7-7, notably with Harry putting in a superb second half performance. The blues (Charlie, Mateo, Theo, Tom P, Troy S, Troy K, William) also fared well in a more even start, coming out on top of the first game 9-7 following some hard yards put in from especially from Tom P, Mateo and Troy S. The second game also went the same way 10-5 with Tom P also having another good game and also Theo. Finally we play a single game at the end with 8-aside and subs, which given the sun was appreciate by some hot and sweaty boys by then. We put in a great term performance at the end and with tries coming from across the team and some great support play from everyone. Overall we won 9-5 but still need to work on reaction speed at the breakdown as we kept on getting turned over at the ruck, but were compensating with some excellent running and offloads as well as much more consistent tackling. By the end of it given everyone got a lot of game time there were some pretty exhausted boys. Well done to everyone and in particular Harry

Dadd who got player of the week for a notable step up in effort and performance today. We also wish Tom Rutter well in recovering from his injured arm, received having put in a fantastic try-saving tackle today. We meet at Welwyn Rugby Club next week at 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off. U11 s Away at Leighton Buzzard With a few boys away for half term the U11 Squad were able to field a single team with four substitutes; we agreed to play two back to back games against the two different Leighton Buzzard sides. We had a good warm up before enjoying two longer games, 12 minute per half with 5 mins for half time which gave the two games an altogether more grown up and authentic rugby feel. We gave the boys clear positions this week and the structures worked well all morning. We were delighted that the lads put in a solid and convincing win during the first game. With tiring legs against fresh opposition on a warm morning the second game slipped away from the boys in the second half so we finished up with a win for each Club. We honestly couldn t have been more pleased with the way the lads played today. There were a number of note-worthy contributions. Kobie was solid as always in the middle of the park; Lucas took the ball forward and into contact with commitment which was great to see. Harry made an awesome tackle in the second game; Fabian, Tank, Whitfield took the Leighton Buzzard players on for a trademark drive in the second game which was great to watch. Alex Donovan as always tackled with great commitment and to great effect. Both Ronan and James Bedford were dangerous taking the ball forward and Ronan in particular had a great first full game at full back. Thomas Moore was very effective as our dedicated Hooker winning a number of scrums against the head as well as most of our own ball. Thomas Howard stepped in as scrum half and gave good distribution during the first game and also took on the kicking duty this week which worked very well with the boys communicating well and chasing down the ball from the restarts. But the outstanding player this week was Elliot Clifford. In both games Elliot tacked with fantastic commitment; finished and scored when he had the chances; distributed wisely and dominated the first game in particular. At the end of the morning; Elliot was presented as player of the week before the boys gave James Bedford the Birthday Bumps!! Happy Birthday James and Well done to all of the U11s this week..a great morning; the full U11 line up this week was: Kobie (Captain Fantastic), Tom Moore, (Hooker), Elliot and James, (Wings), Ronan, (Full Back), Thomas Howard, (Scrum Half), Alex, Lucas, Kyle, Mackenzie, Jack, Fabian, Harry the Forwards! Let s go and back it up next week against Welwyn! 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off U12 s Away at Leighton Buzzard 13 members of the U-12s survived a foggy journey up north to arrive in the sunlit uplands of Leighton Buzzard for this week s fixture. We agreed to play one 15 min per half match, followed by a 10 min match against LBs 17 man squad. The first match proved, quite literally, to be a wakeup call for Datchworth. 4 tries had been leaked before Datchworth players had moved, and the whole squad seemed to act with a lacklustre air for the first 15mins. Ball was turned over a lot and tackling seemed to be viewed as an optional extra. In the second period, things improved with better tackling, passing and general play. Leighton were a strong side who showed the benefit of passing the ball, and made the most of the few opportunities that came their way in the second half, as Datchworth put in a much stronger performance. The final score was 8 2 to Leighton Buzzard.

After a strong word or two and a few searching questions from Ben the second 10 min game was a different matter. Datchworth ran, tackled, rucked and mauled with much more aggression and took the game to Leighton Buzzard. All the players made a contribution to the performance. Support runners where on peoples shoulders, tackles were not missed, balls were ripped from the oppositions hands, players were committing to the rucks and winning turnover ball. The result was a 0 2 win for Datchworth, and some very tired boys at the end!! To encourage the boys to better understand what we are trying to get them to do, Ben has issued some homework to each squad member. First he has asked that they watch a full 80mins for first class rugby, and not play with their tablets while the TV is on, or go for a walk to the play area if watching live. Second he asked each boy to look up an individual player on You Tube to see how they went about their role on the rugby pitch, how they ran, tackled, supported, ruck, mauled and positioned themselves. Most of the players mentioned were Bens childhood heroes from the 2003 England squad, I would just like to point out that the boys could also learn from watching footage of the 2005, 2008, 2012 and Nations, I ll leave you to figure out why,(... Editors note... this statement really only just passes with Datchworth policy and quality standards, (on the grounds of inclusion)). Next week we are away to Welwyn. Parking is tight there, so if you can car share, I would recommend it, 9:30 meet for a 10AM Kick Off, and please can the boys be awake from the start!! We will be working on ways to get them angry from the get go. Senior Rugby Following last weekends home success against Grasshoppers this weekend the First XV boys had a very tough away fixture against Hackney losing On a more positive note the 3s had a good win against Welwyn 4s. Youth Section U13 Away Pool game vs Ealing U14 - Training - Pitch 3 U15 Training - Pitch 2 with U18s if no fixture U16 - Home league - Hampstead - pitch 1-11am KO U18 - Training - Pitch 2/3 & Car park Duty Mini Mid-Week Training: After the half term break we will get back to Mini Mid-Week training as normal this Wednesday. 7 Closing Notes I believe most people felt this weekend s fixture with Leighton Buzzard was the highlight of the season so far. Next weekend we are much closer to home with the first local derby of the season with Welwyn before we return to Datchworth for a training morning. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to travel over to Buzzard this weekend; have great weeks and see you on Wednesday at Datchworth or next Sunday over at Welwyn (9:30 for 10). Best wishes, Andrew Andrew Howard Chairman Mini Section
