1 By Lee Allcock Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 Football Futures Programme ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The aim of the Football Futures scheme is to provide volunteer opportunities for young people aged in order to develop their skills, knowledge and experience to help equip them for further/higher education and employment. The programme is the biggest in the country with a variety of events and programmes running throughout the half term holidays. In this months edition the events include Us Girls Rocks With an interview with Team GB goalkeeper Rachel Brown- besides our trip to Poland and information on our Youth Council. I'll be attending the events throughout the year - interviewing the various volunteers on the programme and interviewing celebrities at times (Team GB Goalkeeper Rachel Brown makes an appearance inside this newsletter). I m hoping to express how the Football Futures programme can help young people of this county via the medium of our very own newsletter. It is important that the hard work of volunteers is recognised so each month this newsletter will be distributed to those involved in Football Futures in order to update volunteers on what they have achieved and what they will achieve in the future so volunteers will never miss out on their on-going achievements! 2 TEAM GB STAR HELPS OUT FOOTBALL FUTURES On Tuesday 30th October 30 young girls from Durham besides helpers from the Football Futures programme attended Us Rocks at Middlesbrough s FC in the community. The event which featured The FA Girls Football Festival along with a wide range of free sporting activities was aimed at encouraging young women aged 14 to 25 to get active and have some fun. The FA Girl s Football Festival included a free programme led by FA coaches aimed at encouraging girls to get involved in the game. They were accompanied by Rachel Brown, Team GB, England and Everton football star, who gave the girls an insight into the life of a semiprofessional female footballer. When I was younger I didn t have role models in my sport so I wanted to show them that we are very accessible and encourage them to get involved. Rachel: When I was younger I didn t have role models in my sport so I wanted to show them that we are very accessible and encourage them to get involved. The drop out rate for young people in sport is massive so I hope I can motivate young girls to stay involved in sport and stay healthy for life." How do you think your presence today can help the younger generation? "I want to become a role model for the younger generation by being accessible through attending this sort of event - I want to inspire a generation." What is your opinion about the difference between men and women s football? "With the help of the youth system and the Centre of Excellence's (which Hope Powell brought in) - women's football is definitely going in the right step. It is so much bigger now than when I began 15 years ago. This is an exciting time for women's football in this country and with the FA backing and funding it has been such a big help." Tell me more about the Olympics... "The Olympics showed how woman's football can draw big crowds and hopefully the FA will allow women's football to be held in Wembley from 2013." What inspired you or what was your motivation to become a footballer? "I always enjoyed football at a very young ago. I joined Liverpool at the age of 14 not knowing that there was even an England women's team." What are your ambitions for the future? 2 "I want to become a coach when I retire."

3 MORE ABOUT US ROCKS The day also incorporated a range of sports such as judo, volleyball, netball, football, touch rugby and table tennis, street dance and street cheer. TEAM GB STAR RACHEL BROWN GETS INVOLVED WITH THE FOOTBALL FUTURES PROGRAMME ABOUT THE DAY The event which was run by StreetGames and Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community, Newcastle City Council in partnership with The FA, WSL and Durham County FA as part of the National Us Girls programme, had a fun and friendly atmosphere with music, free T-shirts, and prize give-ways. Helen Crowley from Us Girls said: It was an amazing day, the turnout was fantastic. I saw a lot of young women playing sport with big smiles on their faces, which is exactly what Us Girls is about. The event helped those involved on the Football Futures programme get involved with a large scheme within the community to encourage and promote participation in football. Jade Murray, involved with the Football Futures programme said: I hope this event will help to raise the profile of the women s game. I will be helping out at all of the stations I m needed and I m hoping that I can help inspire young girls to stay involved with sport may that be through participation directly in football or through helping out just as I am today. The US girls project itself aims to get 30,000 young women living in disadvantaged communities more active and the Us Girls activities are tailored around the needs of As a reward for taking part in the activities participants were entered into a free prize draw for Ipod Shuffles and New Look gift cards. Us Girls is supported by 2.3 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England as part of its Active Women campaign to tackle the gender gap in sport. Us Girls is delivered by The Active Women Consortium, a body led by national sport development charity StreetGames that is dedicated to helping women in disadvantaged areas access sport. 3

4 EUROCAMP 2012 WROCLAW, POLAND MORE ABOUT THE POLAND TRIP The trip also included: Sightseeing Boat trip Making new friends Training Football3 Methodology Zoo visit Fire breathing (By a professional) Social Mixing Following the success of the Football Futures Programme the Durham FA were selected by The National FA to represent the country at a 4 day international football event in Wroclaw, Poland in August. The Respect your Health Eurocamp 2012 saw 41 European delegations come together for a camp full of learning, football and fun. THE SELECTION Elice Clarke (Age 16), Lewis Pye (Age 16), Nathan Brewster (Age 15) and Miranda Makepeace (Age 15) were great representatives of their schools, their county and above all their Country and were selected to attend the camp. Tina Reed (Durham County FA Football Development Officer Education) said: We felt these young people would really benefit from the experience but more importantly we believed they would gel as a team and use what they learnt to help develop and promote Football Futures in their local communities. The trip was an excellent opportunity to show other countries how the life of those living in under-privileged areas can be improved through football. At the camp individuals learnt about different cultures, how football is played in different countries and developed some vital skills such as communication and leadership. The communication and leadership skills were vital learning tools on the trip as everyone involved spent almost a week with new friends who didn t speak their language. Poland trip representatives Tina added: It was a great experience for all involved and they have brought lots of ideas back into the County which they are already implementing. Elice, Lewis, Nathan and Miranda can now see how football is portrayed across Europe in a range of different cultures. They learnt how the beautiful game is loved throughout the world and how the love of football can help improve the lives of those living in disadvantaged communities not just at home but throughout the globe. 4

5 6 THEMES TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES There are 6 main areas for new young leaders to get involved with Football Futures. This includes: Coaching and Working with Teams: You could help coach and/or manage a football team in your school, college or university or an FA Charter Standard Club. You could also volunteer on our FA Club Links Programme, with the FA Skills Team, our Disability Football Programme or as part of a Football in the Community Scheme. MORE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH FOOTBALL BENEFITS OF THE PRO- GRAMME: Refereeing: Durham County FA provide opportunities for you to train as a referee and many of our current young leaders who themselves are qualified referees are always on hand to offer advice and guidance on the best way to get started. Running Events: With assistance from the Durham FA you could help with the organisation, coordination and delivery of mini soccer festivals, club tournaments, fundraising events, school, college or university futsal events or disability festivals. Running and Developing the Game: We have volunteer placements available within FA Charter Standard Leagues for those whose interests may lie within organisation or administration. You could assist your PE staff with the running of intra mural leagues or competitions or you could volunteer behind the scenes in a Charter Standard Club. Promoting the Game: You could help with the development of your clubs website, social networking groups. Write match reports, press releases, website or newsletter articles or take photographs. Durham County FA can provide opportunities within the Football Futures Programme to get involved in filmmaking and editing, writing and photography. RESPECT Ambassador: This role could involve supporting football events in making sure all teams understand competition rules and regulations, helping develop a code of conduct and ensuring players/coaches/spectators sign up and adhere to it, promote the Respect Campaign within Durham FA s Football FA Certificates rewarded for voluntary work The chance to represent the Durham FA at National FA events Annual 2 day Leadership camp Annual awards programme Chance to enhance leadership skills Gain new knowledge and experience Recognition of voluntary work on the Durham FA website and newsletter Meet and work with young leaders across the county Earn free Umbro kit and equipment plus discounts on coach education courses Become part of our Leadership Academy and Management Team 5

They provide more opportunities for children and young people to play and volunteer in grassroots football via acting as Ambassadors for the programme and promoting the scheme within their local areas. Tina Reed (Durham County FA Football Development Officer Education) said: The Youth Council are our next generation of volunteers and have been put in place to ensure we are reaching out to as many young people as possible. The forefront aim of the council is to recruit new young people and ensure there are opportunities available for them in order to develop their skills and knowledge. Through Supporting local FA Charter Standard Clubs and Leagues, schools and colleges the council ensure the Durham County FA are providing the most appropriate activities and opportunities for our young people.
