Finally, we are starting to see progress on long awaited recreational projects. The Jimmy Gill parking expansion project is complete, which will allow public to enjoy the park better and entertain larger events such as family reunions and other community events. If you have been to the Athens Sportsplex, there has been significant progress on our new multiuse baseball / softball complex. If you look closely you can actually see how the fields will be laid out. There will be 4 fields with state of the art concession stands with hospitality room, press box, new batting cages and new shade structures. The tennis court renovation is well underway and Swan Creek is scheduled to be completed Monday, July 17th with Big Spring immediately following weather permitting. As far as the new recreation center, the City Council approved the hiring of the architectural firm Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood. We have already had two very spirited planning sessions and I have a third planning session scheduled for July 27th. We are still in the very preliminary stages but it has been very interesting and exciting planning a new recreation center for Athens. We hope to have a rendering of this project early Fall. Just as a final note, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the participants in the Youth Volleyball and Adult Softball leagues. Special thanks to Rocket City Yoga and all the ladies who came out to Big Spring Park and Swan Creek Park to participate in Yoga in the Parks. Ben Wiley Director Cemetery, Parks & Recreation Preston, our newest Recreation Coordinator delivering a signed volleyball to Elizabeth who was injured in a car accident. Her teammates from the Green team, Toxicity showed their support at their last game Youth Volleyball With the participation in Youth Volleyball up so is the excitement at Athens Rec Center as we are well into the season. 3 P A G E 3 In Case You Missed It 5K Training Program Relay for Life In February, participants in Athens Rec. 5k Training Program set a goal. That goal was to complete a 5k race (3.1 miles). On May 6th at the Chick-fil-A 5k race, several participants we able to accomplish their goal. Congratulations to this guys for their success! 5th Avenue Baseball Reunion / Wiffle Ball Tournament On July 1st, the Athens Parks & Recreation hosted the 5th Avenue Baseball Reunion at the Robert A. Tinnon Park, formerly known as 5th Avenue Park. Baseball players, coaches, and umpires that once spent hours upon hours at 5th Avenue playing, coaching, and umpiring baseball came to relive some of those great memories and to renew old friendships that were created through the game of baseball. As part of the reunion, there was a 4 team wiffle ball tournament, which was won by the Walk Off Warriors (pictured below). We would like to thank everyone that participated in the event and helped make it a huge success. Mud Volleyball County for a Cure took Mud Volleyball over from CASA after 28 years. There were 50 teams competing and over 500 attendees. Mud Volleyball has become an annual tradition in Athens and would not have been possible this year without them along with: Athens Parks and Recreation, Relay for Life team, Athens Fire and Rescue and the Sherriff Office. City of Athens Relay for Life Team Yoga in the Parks Rocket City Yoga Yoga Week June 5th 9th Athens Parks and Recreation along with Rocket City Yoga celebrated Yoga week by holding free yoga classes at Big Spring and Swan Creek Parks. All week registrants were able to enjoy our parks while doing yoga. This is something we would like to bring back on a yearly basis in the parks and possibly regularly by offering yoga classes when we get our new recreation center.
