3 W elcome Welcome to the Sports Gude of the K.U.Leuven Unversty Sports Centre. In ths gude you wll fnd all the nformaton you need to have a sportng academc year. The only condton s that you have a sports card (for a year or for a day: see p.2). We offer a wde sportng gamma of 60 dfferent sports, for students, staff and others; both for the begnner as the top-level athlete. Ths range of sports s organzed by the Unversty Sports Centre of K.U. Leuven. In cooperaton wth LOKOsport the Unversty Sports Centre wants to pont out the sport polcy of the unversty; not only on a regonal, but also on a natonal and an nternatonal level. The executve board of the USC s the Sports Secretarat. There you can buy sports - and ftness cards, enrol for courses and get all knds of nformaton. It s located n the entrance hall of the De Nayer Buldng, Tervuursevest 101, 3001 Heverlee. You can also contact the secretarat by phone (016/ ) or on sport@kuleuven.be. Based on these tests and your personal goals, the nstructor wll make for you a personalsed and adapted tranng-programme. You can book the sports felds and halls up to 14 days n advance. Before you start playng you have to brng the sports (or day) cards of all the players to the doorkeeper! If you want to play tenns or beachvolley, you can only make bookngs 1 day n advance (excepton: on Frdays you can book for the weekend and the followng Monday). Every player must have a sports card! For beachvolley you hand over the sports cards of all the players (mn. 4) to the doorkeeper, n exchange you wll receve the beachvolley net and the lnes. People who don t have a sports card have to buy a day tcket! PRICE If you and your team mates have a vald sports card, everythng s for free! For ndoor tenns you wll pay an extra fee of 10.00/hour. A WHOLE YEAR If you want to make use of a sports faclty on a regular bass (every week) at a fxed tme, you have to make a request by emal. Tell us who you are, whch sport you want to practse, when you want to do so and wth how many people you want to come. Please send your demands before October 14th 2011 to sport@kuleuven.be. Reservatons on a regular bass are only possble tll the Easter holday perod. N ew track L ockers IF YOU ARE A REGULAR VISITOR AT THE UNIVERSITY SPORTS CENTRE, WE RECOMMEND YOU TO RENT A LOCKER TO STORE YOUR CLOTHES AND VALUABLES TO PREVENT ANY THEFT. In both the Gymnasum and n the De Nayer buldng you have several optons: You can rent a locker for one day. It s free of any charge but you have to brng your own lock. Be aware that you have to take everythng wth you n the evenng; otherwse your lock wll be removed. You can rent a locker n BDN for a whole academc year. You have to pay 4,00 at the doorkeeper and brng your own lock. You can rent a locker for one day. You don't have to brng your own lock, but you nsert a 1,00 con. When you've fnshed you just take your bags and your con wll be returned. Agan: ths s only for one day, so please empty the locker n the evenng or your stuff wll be removed. As you see, lots of optons for usng a locker. Please use them, we want to help you to prevent theft! THE UNIVERSITY SPORTS CENTRE HAS A NEW RUNNING TRACK, A FINNISH RUNNING TRACK. The track wth a length of 1 km was constructed through the Unversty Sports Centre. The soft, reslent and absorbent layer not only provdes a pleasant feelng whle runnng but also reduces the load on tendons and jonts! Note: Also for runnng, you must have a sports card!

The SMAC s home to all people dealng wth sport njures as well for all questons concernng the preventon, dagnoss and treatment of chronc and acute sport njures. It s possble to perform a sport medcal test for so called more dangerous sports or for health reasons. The specfc rehabltaton of sport njures, after havng surgery or not, can take place at the well equpped sport physology department. 8 8 L OKO-Sport LOKO-SPORT IS A SECTION OF LOKO (THE COORDINATING ORGANISATION OF FACULTY STUDENT ORGANISATIONS IN LEUVEN). LOKO-Sport s a secton of LOKO (the coordnatng organsaton of faculty student organsatons n Leuven). Our goal s to motvate students n Leuven to take part n sportng actvtes. The best known actvtes are our classcs, whch are organsed n Leuven by the students themselves and are our hghlghts of the year. Almost every student has attended the 24-hours relay race to run at least one lap or played n the IFB-cup (an ntramural competton between all student organsatons and dormtores). These FUNtastc events wll all take place ths academc year as well. You wll fnd all the necessary nformaton on our webste. Our man actvtes 24-HOUR RELAY RACE: 25 AND 26 OCTOBER 2011 Ths s the best known and largest event organsed by students n Belgum. About 20 teams, manly student organsatons, work hard and tran for weeks n the run-up to ths unque and thrllng relay race whch, as the name ndcates, lasts 24 hours. For ths occason the unversty sports centre s transformed nto a festve and sportng party venue. The teams not only compete on the track, they also try to surpass ther opponents and wn the competton for the best constructon or most delcous dsh or refreshment. Wth musc and h-tech entertanment provded around the clock, even non-athletes can get nvolved. It has become one of the hgh-ponts of the academc year n Leuven for the student populaton. WEDNESDAY SPORTS FEVER: EVERY WEDNESDAY We support and coordnate all sport actvtes organsed by the varous student organsatons. As t s also the man goal of LOKO, LOKO-Sport works for the democratsaton of sportng events for students n Leuven. Every student should be able to take part n sportng events, therefore we subsdse the sportng actvtes of all student organsatons. Wednesday Sports Fever s organzed n cooperaton wth KHLeuven and K.U.Leuven by students for students. Wth ths sports project we want to gve students the opportunty to get an ntroducton n a not so famous sport. From the begnnng of October every student can partcpate for free (you just need a sportng card) on ths weekly organzed sports evenng (afternoon). Each Wednesday we offer you another sport such as capoera, dvng, urban golf, fencng and kayak. Subscrbng for each actvty s necessary because the places are lmted. More nformaton about the actvtes and subscrptons can be found n the centerfold of ths gude or on our webste: To guarantee that the two goals are acheved, we meet every week n our Work Assembly. The Work Assembly conssts not only of representatves of the student organsatons, but also of volunteer students as well as nonstudents. 9 ICUC: INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES 29/03-01/04/2012 The Internatonal Champonshp for Unverstes and Colleges', or ICUC, s the latest ntatve n collaboraton wth LOKO-Sport, LOKO- Internatonal, LOKO-Culture, K.U.Leuven and the Amercan Unversty of Pars (AUP). Together, we want to organze an nternatonal sports crcus at the K.U.Leuven Unversty Sports Centre. Sports, socal ntegraton and bondng are the advantages of ths project. Do you feel lke untng wth your nternatonal frends, partcpatng ths event and measure yourself wth the multcultural partcpants? Further nformaton wll follow, so be sure to keep an eye on the webste at the start of the academc year! STUDENT MARATHON: 14 MARCH 2012 The student marathon has three versons: 5km, 10km & 21 km. A very nce route s chosen each year, on rural roads and through beautfully rollng landscapes, sometmes traversng the town centre. Ths s one of the most popular and well known actvtes organzed by LOKO- Sport and t s very popular not only among students, but among unversty staff members and outsders as well. INTERFACULTY CUP Durng the months November, December, February and March the prelmnary rounds of the Interfaculty Cup wll take place. IFB, as t s known n Flemsh, s a competton between the varous facultes of the unversty. Competton s held for both male and female n four sports: volleyball, basketball, outdoor soccer and ndoor soccer. The clmax takes place on the fnals day, when the best teams clash and offer exctng games and an mpressve show of talent, the fnals day wll be on the 16th of May Adventure Nght Rad - Assocaton Sports Day WEDNESDAY MARCH 21ST, 2012 UNIVERSITY SPORTS CENTRE K.U.LEUVEN, HEVERLEE The second edton of the Adventure Nght Rad wll be organzed on Wednesday March 21st, Every student of the Assocaton K.U.Leuven s allowed to attend ths Assocaton Sports Day. Ths s not just a sports day! Durng ths Adventure Nght Rad, every team has to beat sportsmanlke records, to reach adventurous nstructons and to solve complcated bran teasers. Partcpate and become the most sportsmanlke team of the assocaton! 9

You can try to travel the 32km that separate the two ancent unverstes n 2 dfferent ways as a couple - 1 runner + 1 bker (as mentoned above) as a sngle runner As the ttle ndcates, we are lookng for runners and cyclsts. In ths event, you can combne both of these sports. As a couple you can partcpate, one as a cyclst and the other as a runner. Along the track, you can change functons as you lke. Ths year the start (2pm) wll be n the Centre Sportf de Blocry, the beatng heart of sportve Louvan-la-Neuve, the fnsh s located n our own Unversty Sports Centre n Leuven. A beautful track wll gude you from Louvan-la-Neuve to Leuven, as we try to make t as green as possble. Through the felds n the regon of Bossut and Doceau, we cross Meerdaelwoud and Heverleebos, two forests that le between both ctes. Wherever we cross any street, we provde people makng your passage as safe as possble or we work wth polce offcers. We offer you a nce warm shower afterwards, a recepton and several prces!! As usual we take care of transportaton of your bkes, clothes, etc If you re nto sports and lke to be out n a green envronment, ths s really what you re after! If you want to work on a more actve lfestyle and want to have some help from a sklled person, do not hestate and subscrbe for one of the personal coaches of the Unversty Sports Centre! The coachng conssts of: A personal ntervew wth the coach about your exercse hstory, your exercse preferences, your capabltes and goals... Durng ths ntervew he/she wll develop a personal exercse plan. The coach wll follow you regularly, put you on your way, answer questons, adjust your exercse plan wth you and wll motvate you to persevere. 12 12 I nter-unversty Sport: FSSF - BUSF - FISU FSSF FLEMISH STUDENT SPORTS FEDERATION (FSSF) STUDIES AND SPORTS, EASY TO COMBINE FISU UNIVERSIADE (FISU) The Unversade (the Unversty world games), organzed every two years, s the sportng Mecca for top level sport students. After the Olympc Games, the Unversade s the bggest sports event worldwde. Partcpatng at both the summer - and wnter unversade s possble. THE UNIVERSITY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The Unversade takes place every two years. In the odd year, the Unversty World Champonshps are organzed, especally n those sports that aren't on the offcal programme of the Unversade. FISU-FORUM ABOUT Competton Through the Assocaton, Unversty or College, the FSSF gves you the opportunty to compete aganst other colleague students out of the Flemsh regon. You have the choce between most of the team sports and certan ndvdual sports. Ths forum takes place every two years wth the am to brng students and professonals together and to try to develop student sport worldwde by dscusson and exchange. Recreaton The FSSF wll organze a recreaton day n sk & snowboard and n golf. These projects are organzed n corporaton wth the specfc sports federaton of these sports. FSSF awards College Student and Unversty Student of the year award: The students of the unversty and college who can combne ther studes wth ther top-level sport, wll receve a bronze statue made by Fred Bellefrod, the creator of de Kotmadam (Oude Markt, Leuven). Every year, these awards are gven at the fnal day of the Flemsh team compettons. Ths fnal day s a huge sports event, called het Groot Vlaams Studentenkampoenschap or GVSK. BUSF BELGIAN STUDENT SPORT In ndvdual compettons, the best performng students n the Flemsh champonshps are selected to partcpate n the natonal champonshps, organsed by BSS. In team sports the frst 2 teams qualfy for the natonal fnal 4, where they meet the top teams from the French speakng part of Belgum. Besde the barbell, a small bench s also used, on whch exercses are carred out lyng down. Durng body power, exercses have lots of repettons wth a relatve low weght. 20 20 M odern dance BASED ON EXPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS THIS CLASS WILL FOCUS ON MODERN DANCE TECHNIQUES SUCH AS CONTRACT-RELEASEMOVEMENTS AND FLOORWORK. Modern dance arose from a reacton aganst the academc ballet wth founders such as Martha Graham, José Lmón, Lester Horton, Merce Cunnngham and many more. Modern dance focuses on expresson, where body movements, deas and emotons are central. In these classes we wll pursue a techncal development as well as en mprovement n empathy and a transfer of emotons. Every class exsts of 2 parts. In the frst part techncal modern dance elements wll be ntroduced n dfferent exercses. Afterwards we apply these technques n a dance combnaton wth focus on transfer of movements. For several weeks we buld on a combnaton so t s best not to mss any classes! We wll work n three levels: Begnners (A): those who hasn't any dance-experence, we try to gve you movements and basc technques for authentc jazz dance. SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OBVIOUSLY HAVE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON OUR HEALTH. Ths means that a good physcal condton can be very mportant, especally when you consder that 80% of the populaton wll suffer from lower back pan at least once n ther lfe, generally caused by poor physcal condton. Anyone who has ever been confronted wth dscomfort or pan n the lower back regon wll know how mportant t s to tran n a back-frendly way. Wth 'back n acton', we provde a one-hour support programme where the safety of your back s paramount. To practse ths sport, both begnners and veterans have a lot of facltes at ther dsposal: for sprntng, hurdlng, hgh jumpng, broad jumpng, trple jumpng, pole vault, dscus throw, javeln, hammer throw, etc. We even have some ndoor equpment. 26 26 F encng FENCING IS AN ACTIVITY THAT EVOLVED FROM PREPARATION FOR A DUEL TO AN OLYMPIC SPORT. Fencng s an actvty that evolved from preparaton for a duel to an Olympc sport. The purpose of the game conssts n acqurng the proper sklls n handlng and controllng a weapon, together wth mprovng your reflexes. Only by becomng a master over your blade, you can ht your opponent n a duel. Fencng can be practsed wth three weapons: sable, epee or fol. If you bult up the basc sklls n handlng a fol, you can go many way: ether becomng a master n fol fencng or swtchng to another weapon. Therefore n the ntaton lessons, we consder fol as the prmary weapon of choce. As the fencer evolves, we can let hm get a taste of sable or epee! 30 30 K arate KARATE IS A MARTIAL ART THAT USES THE NATURAL WEAPONS OF THE HUMAN BODY. It strengthens all muscle groups by dynamc reacton movements. It also develops specfc coordnaton, dexterty and flexblty. As a compettve sport t not only develops your power, speed and courage, but also (and especally) self-control and respect for the opponent. The normal tranng sessons are for everybody (begnners and advanced alke). The extra competton tranng sessons are only for karatekas who are selected on the bass of fxed crtera. If you meet these crtera you can be a member of the unversty team. The karate style we offer for the begnners s WADO RYU. Durng the holdays we also have tranng sessons (probably other hours). K ung Fu SHAO-LIN KUNG FU IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS MARTIAL ARTS IN CHINA WITH A VERY LONG HISTORY. There are many dfferent dscplnes and styles e.g. the Preyng- Mants Style, Long-Fst and Northern Shao-Ln ground kung fu. Some of the movements of Shao-Ln are mtatons of anmals, for example, monkeys, swallows, herons, lons, prayng-mantses, etc. Three hundred years ago, Mster Wang Lang was fascnated by the attack technques of the preyng-mants and used ths nspraton to create the Preyng-Mants Style. The course s dvded nto three dfferent levels. The frst level wll focus on the basc technques, elementary defence technques and relaxaton exercses. 31 P lates A CLASS OF PILATES EXISTS OUT OF A COMBINATION OF STRENGTH ENHANCING EXERCISES, STABILITY EXERCISES AND RELAXATION EXERCISES. It s not the quantty of the exercses but the qualty of the performance that matters. Control and correct performance are key concepts n plates. Breathng and conscousness to make the rght muscles work are the base of every exercse. The result of exercsng plates are longer muscles, more flexblty and a balanced body. All materals that wll be used are at your dsposton. To ensure correct performance of the exercses ths class allows a maxmum of 15 people. P ower tranng USING THE POWER ROOM IS RESERVED SPECIFICALLY FOR ATHLETES WHO TRAIN AND ARE COMPETITIVE AT HIGH LEVEL.
