1 RGS Junior School Bulletin Friday 10th November 2017 Autumn Term: Volume 9 In assembly this week I told the story of Saladin s generosity and kindness during battle with the soldiers of King Richard during the Crusades. Kindness is the value I have focussed on recently and your generosity in giving to the Salvation Army for today s assembly is an excellent example. Thank you. RJ Craig CONGRATULATIONS Zuhair Abdullah (6L) recently achieved his purple belt in Karate. Well done, Zuhair. Miss Gravely & Miss Noble CONGRATULATIONS Sophie displayed great sportsmanship at her rugby club (Alnwick) and duly received the biggest trophy I've ever seen. Well done, Sophie! Year 4 Hockey v Yarm Last Thursday afternoon all of the Year 4 girls travelled to Yarm to play hockey. With the weather very much on our side we enjoyed 4 fantastic matches in the sunshine. There was some excellent hockey on display. Moving forward in attack we were strong and assertive and we looked very determined in defence! Everyone learnt a lot and had great fun! The final scores: Red team: 5-0 win Blue team: 5-0 win Green team: 3-1 win Yellow team: 1-0 win Mrs Barlow

Maanvi Manchineni and Henry Rewcastle finished in joint second place with 5/6, so Henry won the trophy for the best boy. Craig Liang scored 4/6. In the U11 section, Sai Chinmayee Naresh Kumar won with an excellent 6/6. Tanvi Manchineni, Varnu Boora and Harman Gill finished joint third with 4/6. 3 Another successful Waterstones Review! Congratulations to Izzy Goldberg whose book review of The Polar Bear Explorer s Club by Alex Bell can be seen in Waterstones, Newcastle for the next month. If you are passing, have a look in the window or pop down to the children s department to read Izzy s review I know I will be! Mrs Wall Year 6 Rugby v Yarm Last Friday, Year 6 travelled to Yarm for a rugby match. The team kicked off the match with a strong start, scoring early on and keeping dominant possession through the first half with excellent handling skills from Taylor and Wardle. The defence was solid with strong tackling and rucking giving space for the wings to land several more tries. Great result 12-1 to RGS - good team work Lads! Alexander Searro Year 6 Rugby v St Olave's On Tuesday, Year 6 played against St Olave's in Newcastle. A disappointing first half as St Olave's pulled ahead and scored three excellent trys. At half time, the team had a quick pep talk and as they reached the kick off into the second half, with their game heads on fire, they went quickly into a try from Magill. Followed swiftly by Taylor and Linkleter also landing one each at the try line, making the score even! It had turned into an exciting match and it was nearly full time! The referee called 'last play' and St Olaves had possession of the ball, in the final seconds they just managed to fall over the try line, however great defence skills demonstrated from RGS. Good pep talk Lads! 4-3 to St Olaves. Alexander Searro Y3 & 4 Rugby v Barnard Castle Monday saw the visit of Barnard Castle. It was a fantastic afternoon of rugby with lots of fantastic skills on display. The effort, commitment and the drive to compete was evident in all matches and the sportsmanship and comraderie was also in abundance. Yesterday, rugby was the real winner! Well done all.

4 Mowden Hall Hockey Match Report On Friday 3rd November, a year 5 team and a year 6 team went to Mowden Hall to play hockey. Both teams played very well. The Year 6 game was tight- we played well and were getting on the post and passing to the wings to use more space on the pitch. It ended 3-2 to Mowden but we have learnt that for next time we need to protect the goal better. The Year 5 team played with a lot of determination and assertiveness. Lots of goals were scored and their match finished with a 7-1 victory! Well done girls. Cara Lee, 6W. St. Olave's Hockey Match Report On Tuesday, two Year 6 teams played against St. Olave's. They had two very strong sides and we were very impressed with their defending skills and extremely powerful hits. Both teams had to work hard to secure possession of the ball. Rae Faith (goalkeeper) made some fantastic saves in her match! Unfortunately we lost both matches with scores of 3-1 and 5-1 but we were able to take away things that we can work on for our next match!! Cara Lee, 6W. Year 4 Barnard Castle Hockey Match Report On Monday afternoon, three teams from Year 4 played against Barnard Castle on the ATP. It was a lovely afternoon for hockey and all the girls were very excited following on from a successful afternoon at Yarm last Thursday! The matches were tough as Barnard Castle put out some strong opposition- the RGS girls had to work hard to win the ball and keep possession. The Blue team lost 3-2 in a thrilling match that saw the ball move up and down the pitch quickly. The Red team won 7-0 in a fantastic game that saw them dominate play and the Green team lost 5-2. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the matches and are looking forward to the next ones!! Mrs Barlow On Tuesday, the hockey Y6 B team played St Olaves. They were strong and worked well as a team. In the 1st half, there were some strong kicks and tackles made by both teams, however we were unable to score any goals. On the other hand St Olaves managed to score 3 goals giving them a 3-0 lead. In the 2nd half, we came back stronger with good collaboration from Izzy and Fern strong sweeps from Fern and much better teamwork. All this meant we managed to score a goal but St Olaves also scored a goal. Even though the final score was 4-1 to St Olaves we all had fun. Thank you to all of the B team for trying their best and to Ms Whitney and Mrs Barlow who had arranged all this. Also well done to Fern who was our player of the match. Madeline Watt, 6W

5 National Young Mathematicians On Wednesday, a group of talented mathematicians (Esha, Annika, Nico and Peter ) attended the first round of the National Young Mathematicians Award. They showed great resilience and determination to solve the problems on the day and should be commended for their teamwork. Fingers crossed we get invited back for round two. CONTACT INFORMATION Do you have a new mobile phone? Have you moved recently? Any changes to your details, could you please inform the office and we will update our records. Centre for Life On Wednesday, Ben, Jeremy, Daniel and Shaarav, went to the Centre for Life and took part in a maths workshop. The boys enjoyed the trip and worked diligently and with enthusiasm. They applied their maths skills across a number of puzzles and problems and also learnt a few card tricks in the process! Well done all.
