Monday Cheerleading Table Tennis and Badminton BTEC Diploma help Tuesday Football years 7-10 Netball all years Boys Rugby: Chichester High School for Boys left reeling after SPH victory: 22/09/11 After a very successful end of term last year, the now year 8 boys had probably the biggest challenge to face at the Chichester High School for Boys. Unfortunately due to injury and some pupils being unable to play, we went in to the game with only 14 men against a squad of 19. The boys went in to the game with absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. CHSB had at least 50 supporters along the sideline all wanting their home side to demolish a some what timid looking SPH, with some pupils having not even picked up a rugby ball before. Our boys fought until the very end whistle and with some fantastic side stepping tries from Sam Myles (Captain), great kicking from Ciaran Keating and numerous runs and tackles from the other boys we sealed a very strong win against an extremely shocked Chichester Boys. The next team to play is an equally strong Bishop Luffa but I have ultimate faith in the boy s abilities!! Come on SPH!!! Wednesday Rugby year 7 and 8 Basketball all years Thursday Rugby years 9 and 10 Netball fixtures Yr 11 Netball Team: 29th October V Felpham Community College The team included: Anna Wardrop, Lydia Hothersall, Jodie Castle, Lily Ross-Thomas, Gabriel Ayling, Chevonne Reed-Forrester, Amber Lyons-Kennett. On the way to the game at The Regis School, spirits were lifted with finding a lucky toy elephant and a singalong on the bus. Throughout the game we played as a unit and worked together which at half time was a 4-4 draw. Gabrielle Ayling played awesome in GD, stopping almost every pass into the shooting 'D'. Lily and Amber worked amazingly, getting the ball to our shooters Chevonne and Anna who were brilliant. Lydia and Jodie played very well n their positions and we could not fault our team as a whole. Due to a last second penalty shot, the game ended in a 6-5 victory to Felpham Community College. The team were ecstatic about their performance and could not believe how well we played as a team. Miss Duckers lifted our spirits by cheering us on when we lost the ball and was very happy with how well all of the girls played. Players player - Lily Ross-Thomas - "She did amazingly well and was everywhere on court!" Managers player = Gabrielle Ayling - "Marked her player out of the game!". Match Report by: Lily Ross-Thomas (11RI) and Yr 11 Netball Team. Friday Sixth Form Football Year 11 Indoor football Countdown to the Olympics!! St Philip Howard have been fortunate to have received 36 tickets to the London Olympics to see Beach Volleyball and Athletics. Places have been allocated and this is a reminder that monies are due in on 5th January and 25th May please, to the Front Office please. Also, during the Olympic year, the PE department will be holding special events during class and after-school time to join in with this amazing event. Give me an S, Give me a P Give me an H. A massive thank you to everyone who brought in Sainsbury s vouchers. One of the items that the PE department were able to purchase was an high quality camera, to capture images from events such as Sportsday, Mountbatten, Leadership etc.. (These will then be passed onto year heads to embarrass all involved when they have their leavers ceremony!!

2 Sport News Page 2 Meet the PE staff Miss Black Head of PE Susannah Black Ironman Triathlete who came 9th out of the British women at Ironman France. Susannah is the subject of one of the year 10 BTEC assignments! She is also Miss Black s sister. I have been teaching for 11 years and this is my 7th year at SPH. I am responsible for all areas of PE, but in particular, the academic side with BTEC, GCSEs and A-levels. I can also teach Science and probably D and T because I m good at DIY!! My favourite sport to teach is badminton. I have a 6th Form tutor group and run the Young Enterprise Company for Sixth Formers. Outside of school I play hockey at Chichester Hockey Club. I also run marathons and am going to train for a half ironman triathlon next year, which will involve a mile long swim, followed by a cycle of 56 miles followed by a half marathon. It will mean I have to carry on getting up at 5am a couple of times a week to run or cycle part of the way into school from Brighton to prepare for it!! Favourite sports star: It has to be my lookalike Dame Ellen MacArthur!! Favourite Football team: Shrewsbury Town Mr Collyer Boy s PE Miss Duckers Girl s PE SPH is my first school and this is my third year. I enjoy teaching games activities such as Netball and Football. I am in charge of Girl s PE and run after-school clubs including Netball, Badminton, Basketball, Football and Trampolining. I am a year 8 Form Tutor and love playing bingo on a Friday with them in form time! Outside of school I play hockey for Chichester and Stoolball for Clymping. Favourite sports star: David Beckham Favourite Football Team: Wolverhampton Wanderers My Name is Mr Collyer and I am in charge of Boy s PE at SPH. I have been teaching PE for 3 years and I have worked at SPH for nearly 2 of them. During my time at the school I have had the pleasure of working with some very talented sports people and have been a part of some very successful teams. I am a keen Rugby enthusiast and have recently joined Bognor Rugby Club (lets hope all of that training at the gym will have paid off) and will hopefully be playing competitive Rugby very soon. SPH Rugby has really taken off in the last year and I truly believe we have a fantastic chance of winning some very tough challenges, especially in the year 8 squad!! Favourite sports star: Lawrence Dallaglio Favourite Football Team: Tottenham Hotspurs Mr Shawyer Football legend I have always loved sport from a very young age. Indeed any picture of me under the age of 5 would see me cradling a ball under my chin! Football has always been my biggest love, and I have supported Bognor Regis Town since I was 4. Cricket is a close second, and I often attend Sussex matches. Now I am in my 'pre-senility' years, I still manage to play golf to a very poor standard, and run 10k races when I can. The PE Department do a fabulous job with after school clubs, and I am delighted to be able to help in a very small way. Favourite Sports star: Jimmy Greaves Favourite team: Bognor Regis Football Club Mr Stewart Basketball and Tennis Legend SPH is my first school and I have been a cover supervisor for almost 2 years. I was Junior squad members for Sussex for Squash and Cross- Country, and have played golf, tennis, cricket, and squash for many years. Whilst I was at University I spent 3 summers working at a Camp in America, initially as a tennis coach, and ran in the 1983 Worthing Marathon. Currently I am a 9 handicap golfer. I run tennis and basketball clubs at SPH and I am so pleased at how popular these are! 3 An interview with Catherine Hawkins and Shannon Roberts (Year 11): How has the sports leadership course helped us out side of school? Last year, during our P.E. lessons in year 10, we successfully completed our Sports Leadership Award. We then took our newly learnt skills further to the next level by practising them out of school and volunteering at our local Rainbow Units in Barnham and Yapton. Rainbows is for girls aged five to seven, and is the very first step into Girl-guiding, so this makes our job extra important. One of the many skills we learnt during the course was to project our voices so that everyone around us could hear us clearly. This then enables the girls at Rainbows to follow our instructions properly. Along side this skill, we had to learn how to give short concise instructions, making them able to understand the tasks we were presenting. Another skill that we have learnt through the Sports Leadership programme, was how to get down to the level of understanding that the participants require from us, in our case this is the Rainbows. One of the most enforced skills we were made to aquire was time management. This is a very important skill if you are to be successful in completing any type of leadership course, whether inside or outside of school. We learnt that it is best to have a time plan, and to have a back up if all else fails. In conclusion we feel that the sports leadership programme has helped us a lot when we help out at rainbows and we are sure that it will help us in the future in whatever we chose to do. We hope to use all of our skills as we continue to volunteer. The PE department have introduced a new idea to get more pupils to attend clubs and it appears to be working! All you have to do is attend a club and then collect a stamp on your card. Cards and stamps are available from PE staff. You must receive your stamp on the day of the club as no stamps can be given out afterwards. We have been very pleased with pupil s commitment so far and have seen a massive increase recently. Last week, 75 pupils attended clubs on 1 day, which is outstanding!!!!
