Meeting will start in the 3/4 classroom and then move into the other classrooms. The important P& F meeting will immediately follow, all most welcome and we would love to see as many parents there as possible. Today is Shrove Tuesday and Pastor Kees prepared a lovely service at school this morning. The children were most excited to eat pancakes and revisit the importance of this day in preparation for the church season of Lent. A huge thanks to all involved with the Henty Show catering. Your efforts are really appreciated and the staff and students would like to thank all involved for their efforts and constant support for our school. School tuckshop is on again, please revisit the calendar at the end of this newsletter and make note of the days tuckshop is running. Again, many thanks to the parents who work to provide this service for the students. A new menu was attached last week. Lunch orders are available from Liberty Highway store on other school days. There is a set menu for school and only the items listed are available. Only the minimum amount of chips can be ordered. In the past some students were ordering a massive amount of hot chips for their lunch, where most was wasted. Staff have noticed some students are packing very little to eat during the day. With the intensive swimming during this week, students are becoming very hungry during the day. Please check your child has enough to sustain them during the day at school. Pre-cut fruit can be eaten at any time during class throughout the day. Just a reminder of school bell times and hours staff are on duty. Students are not to arrive at school before 8.55am unless prior arrangements have been made and no later than 9.10am. Class times 9:15am to 11am 11:35am to 1:15pm 1:45pm to 3:25pm First lunch 11:00am to 11:35am Second lunch 1:15pm to 1:45pm Intensive swimming is on again Wednesday and Thursday and the long awaited Swimming Carnival is this Friday. Students are to arrive at school Friday morning and walk down to the pool with staff. On the day volunteers will be required to help with various roles, your support is appreciated. Please see Miss Habermann if you can help out during the day. Don t forget to bring something yummy to share for 1 st lunch, lots of water, hat and sunscreen. There will be the parent s verses parents race, and a year 6 student s verses parents race. So, don t forget to pack your swimmers!! Hope to see you there. GO MUD! 2 From the Principal Continued Attached to the Newsletter today is a letter to school families regarding the upcoming Quality Schools Survey that will commence on 19 th March I encourage you to read the letter and take part in the survey. We also have a transportation of students letter for parents to sign and return to school as soon as possible please. In Christian service, Kaylene McClure A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported our fundraising on Saturday at the Henty Show. It was a big success with over 60 meals being served along with fresh scones, slices, sandwiches, wraps and we can t forget the yummy selection of cheesecakes! We only received the call out to take over the catering from the CWA Henty Evening Branch 10 days prior so myself and Megan put our skates on to organise. Thank you also to Di, Colette, Renae, Katie, Susannah & Cameron, plus Jamie and Dave who worked on the day. Appreciation to those who cooked food and donated money towards the event. This kept our outgoings down with a profit of approximately $1200. A fantastic effort by all. The day was very hot and we were all exhausted afterwards but well worth all the work. Hope you can join us this Tuesday after the Parent Information Night for our P & F AGM and General P & F Meeting. 3 Year 3-4 class Last week in the amazing 3/4 class we have been looking at how to write a recount about something that s already happened. We have also been looking at place value and four digit numbers. In Art we have been using a projector so Mrs McClure could neatly, trace around our heads and obviously the girl s hair and then we were able to cut out some strips of colourful magazine then cut around our face. Chanelle and Layla We are an AWESOME MIX, in Year 5 and 6! Another week has come and gone! We can t believe how quickly time is passing and we are continuing to strengthen our learning routine in the 5/6 classroom. Children have now settled into their learning and are looking forward to a great year, with so many wonderful opportunities! The Henty Show display was beautiful thank you to all of our children for creating beautiful works for display and congratulations to all exhibitors on your hard work in creating and compiling entries! We are enjoying a refreshing start to the day with a lovely swim on the days that we have had swimming lessons. Children in 5/6 are busily preparing for our Swimming Carnival this Friday, looking closely at diving technique, stroke correction and body position. This week children experienced the first Assembly for 2018, with Susie and Micah leading our school. We are all looking forward to a great year of assemblies with 5/6 as our responsible leaders and students are planning to work really hard to achieve Principal Awards! This is what they looked like when they were finished. I look forward to seeing everyone at our PIN night and hope that you have a wonderful week ahead! Tonight I will go over ideas to support your child with reading and homework. I hope that you will be able to attend this valuable evening. We will be starting in the 3-4 classroom. Homework was well received by the students and families at home with only a couple of mix ups. All in all, the results at the end of the week were great and I commend you to keep it up, Well Done! Homework will continue in the same format for the year, however sight words will come home for your child to practise at a later date and if/when required. Each term there will be a homework free week. Thank you for the great response to covering your children s school books over the weekends. If you weren t able to complete this or finish, the books can come home again over the weekend. Just let me know and I can assist your child on Thursday with getting organised (a text message before then would be all you need do ). Swimming lessons will continue on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The swimming carnival is on Friday. Kinders rostered day off will be Wednesday s for the month of February only. God Bless, Mrs

4 A message from Pastor Kees Hi and welcome to the new school year. I feel very excited to be part of the team at St Paul s and look forward to meeting you all and working with you throughout this year. This week we begin the season of Lent. Lent is a time of reflection and preparation for our Easter celebrations. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and flows through until Good Friday. Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is known by a few different names and is generally associated with eating pancakes. Traditionally Shrove Tuesday is a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes as yummy as that may be. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. This is done reflectively and to give thanks to God for what He has given us. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Giving up foods: but not wasting them. In the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent without going off. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour. Even though this tradition is not widely practiced today (getting rid of all of the indulgent foods in your house), it is still something for us to think about. Is there anything in our lives that are indulgent that we could do without? Is there anything not right within us that we need freedom from with the forgiveness of sins? Lent is a great time to reflect on these things, and to know that as we approach our Easter celebrations we have been given the greatest gift of all, freedom, love and eternal life. 5 2018 Swimming Lessons and Carnival * Swimming lessons for all students will continue on Wednesday and Thursday this week.9:30 to 10:15 for Year and 10:15 to 11am for K-3 students. On Wednesday (rostered day off for Kinders) Kinder students may arrive at 10:15am, for their session and then leave. Please remember to pack swimmers, towel and a school jumper each day as it can turn cool. The cost to students who do not have a Seasons Pass is $1.50 per day. Please bring your money to your class teacher and for new students, who have a season pass, please bring in your number. Swimming Carnival We hope you are all looking forward to the Swimming Carnival on Friday 16 th Feb. Parents, family and friends welcome. Children are to arrive at school by 9:15am to walk down to the pool. Events will begin by 9:45am. Students are reminded that they can wear their team colours to the carnival, Green for Buckargingah and Red for Mundawaddra. No coloured hair spray or crepe paper is to be used. Helpers will be needed for time keeping, scoring, recording etc. Please let us know if you can help. Don t forget to Slip, Slop, Slap. Parents don t forget your swimming gear for the adult race! Please note: School students are not permitted in the little pool or on play equipment whilst the events take place. We appreciate your assistance to encourage students to support their team while they are not in an event. After final presentations, parents may take their child/ren home directly from the pool, please check with your class teacher to ensure your child has been marked off the roll. Lunch at the Swimming Carnival Can families please bring from home a lunch item to share for First Break at 11am and bring their own food in a lunchbox for snacks during the afternoon.
