Friday 10 th November 2017 Barfield News Website: We Will Remember Them Today, all the children from Reception to Year 8 gathered in the HC Auditorium. The first thing to strike us was the amazing poppy display that Mr Hollands had created using all the felt, paper and wire poppies that every year group in the school has been making in DT. It symbolised our togetherness. Mr Reid started our Remembrance Assembly with a poem. It was a good way to get us all thinking about the meaning of Armistice Day. It created a calm atmosphere which made his presentation have meaning. He spoke about the conditions that the soldiers had to put up with during the Battle of Passchendaele. We saw a picture of Menin Gate and learned that an average of 50,000 soldiers died every day in the battle. The Year 8 children were involved in readings and saying prayers and Raphael Gould played the Last Post on his trumpet. That part made us all emotional because it sounded so brilliant. He felt nervous, but very excited and proud to play. We had our minute silence at 11.00am and that gave us all an opportunity to pay honour and respect to those who lost their lives serving their country. It also gave us a chance to remember our own family and friends who might have lost their lives fighting in more recent wars. Mr Reid bought along a coin that has been made to mark the 100 year anniversary of the battle and we all had a chance to look at it closely as we led out of the HC. The different parts to the assembly all led to us considering one important thought - the cost of war. We Will Remember Them. By Year 8
Living Rain Forest On Monday the children in Year 5 visited the Living Rain Forest and had many interesting memories of the day: Our first animal encounter was a Six Banded Armadillo called Harry which was incredible at digging because it has claws like needles. We then saw a magnificent tortoise which is such a peaceful creature with elegant movement. We walked on a little further and saw in a box my favourite animal ever, the poisonous Dart Frog, the blue one. Funnily enough they weren't poisonous but need a poisonous leaf to become poisonous. William Birkbeck Our guide explained not to touch the leaves of plants because some of them had hairs and could get in your eyes. We were introduced to the bird-eating tarantula that sticks out its hair for protectiion. We saw leaves with gutters down the middle of them to drain away water -another great adaptation! We loved the little monkey who had adapted by being able to leap long distances! Anya Camm We got into 3 groups of 6 and our group went to the turtles and I found out with my binoculars they have yellow and black stripes. 5 minutes later we found the Sloth. It was as still as the sun. This was my favourite animal. We saw where coffee came from. We also saw a vanilla plant and banana plant, but my favourite plant was the dumb plant which was poisonous and if you eat it your vocals will shut down and then your air tube. Alex Blake-Pead. This was a really nice day out!. Elizabeth Trevett
Thank you to everyone who entered the 4A Qualifying Round. We had some really technical entries this time as there was a variety of top skills used to make meringue, fruit puree, short crust, puff and flaky pastries, as well as extremely detailed icing and decorating of scrumptious cup cakes. The judges enjoyed tasting all the entries and were in need of the sugar to keep warm on such a frosty morning! They finally decided that Maya Tilney should win for her passion fruit pastries topped with golden glitter meringue. Congratulations to those who took part for showing off your cooking skills and being part of the competition. I look forward to our last Qualifying Round next week for 4B. Olympic Gold Mrs Milton attended a Hockey course on Thursday and was privileged to meet Crista Cullen, one of our Olympic Gold Medallists with the Women s Hockey Team at the Rio Olympics! Ms Cullen was even persuaded to part with her gold medal for a minute or two! Cathy Anderson On Thursday, the children in Owlets were learning all about the Green Cross Code and how important it is to be very sensible when crossing a road, or in a car park where there are bicycles, cars, vans or lorries. We were very impressed with Miss Ainge s Lollipop Lady skills! Prep-Prep French Day What didn't we do in the Pre-Prep on French Day? Year 2 played French bingo and built mini Eiffel Towers using a variety of materials to see which would work best. Year 1 baked rustic baguettes and played petanque in PE. Reception produced beautiful interpretations of Monet's Water Lilies and completed the cultural quiz. Owls crafted magnificent models using grapes and cocktail sticks and listened to French stories. Owlets created colourful collages and munched pains au chocolat for their mid-morning snacks. We all dressed up in the colours of the French flag, ate boeuf bourguignon and tarte tatin for lunch and celebrated our learning at the end of the day by singing French songs to each other. Magnifique! A few photos of the day can be found on the next page. Rachel Forder

Fire Brigade On Monday, the EYFS children were visited by Green Watch Fire Brigade. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly using the hose and sitting inside the truck. Upon hearing the sirens, Francesca in Owlets said, That s the noise you hear when someone needs help. Henry in Owls said his favourite part was going in the back of the fire engine, and Ted from Reception said, I was really good at the hose. I got the grass and the blue sign! Olivia Shirley
SCHOOL EXAMS FOR YEARS 3-8 School Exams will be from Monday 20 th Friday 24 th November inclusive. The successful format used in previous years will be maintained. The older children will sit more exams than the younger ones; however, for all year groups, their exams will be spread out across the week. In the afternoons the arrangements will be similar to those followed on a normal Wednesday. Each Form Tutor will post his/her class exam timetable in the classroom during the week commencing Monday 13th November and these will also be available on the Parent Portal section of the Barfield Website. Members of staff will revise relevant topics with each class next week prior to the exams. Each teacher will operate his/her own revision programme. In addition, the children will have plenty of time to revise during Exam Week itself. Prep time each evening will be available, most afternoons will contain a Reading session, in which revision may be undertaken and, for the senior year groups, there will be timetabled revision sessions during the week. Parents should have already received a brief synopsis of their child s suggested revision by . Experience has shown us that, by operating these arrangements, we are preparing your children extremely well for future public examinations, as they become ever more familiar with all the necessary requirements. Indeed, feedback indicates that many of them rather enjoy Exam Week! While these exams should not be seen as the be-all and end-all, they do provide us with a useful and important guide and we would ask that absences for non-urgent appointments are avoided during Exam Week, that the children arrive on time each morning with all their appropriate equipment in working order, that they are well rested, having gone to bed at a suitable time the night before, and prepared to do their best. James Reid Life Skills On Tuesday we were so lucky as we had a double Life Skills lesson to learn all about law from Mrs Craig. She had a brilliant Powerpoint and it was full of really useful facts and interesting cases." Hands On "We learned the difference between theft, robbery and burglary and I had always thought they were the same thing!" "I didn't realise that you could be charged for the same criminal act that a friend committed just because you knew about it and that they were going to do it!" "I found out about the different jobs a Solicitor and a Barrister have and why a case could be written as R v Blaue - this would be Regina (the Crown) versus a person or company called Blaue." "From the age of 14 you are allowed to sit in the public viewing gallery of a Magistrates Court and learn more about how a court room runs, watch lawyers in action and see them dressed in their gowns and wigs." "I loved talking about making a contract and how it goes from being an offer to being accepted. I always thought a shop was offering their goods and we accepted, but actually we offer to pay and they accept our money!" "I am going to look round the shops for examples of 'passing off'. This is where a shop may sell something like Puffin Bars that look exactly like Penguin bars - they shouldn't do it!" Thank you Mrs Craig for a brilliant Life Skills session. We learned so much and want to find out more! Cathy Anderson The children had great fun making some tissue paper and charcoal cherry blossom trees. They looked outside and took used some mindfulness time to study the shapes of trees, branches, leaves and flowers. They then used this to create their own artistic versions. Some of the children went on to use this technique to make their own designs. Very colourful girls. Just what we need as winter sets in! Cathy Anderson
MATCH ROUND-UP Friday 3 rd November Mixed Swimming v Grey House U11 & U10 Barfield U Grey House U11 Barfield U Grey House U10 This was a closely contesed gala and the pupils swam very well. Individual wins were achieved by Emma Kimura-Young, Lucy Sproule, William Birkbeck and the U10 Boys Freestyle Team. Ros Milton Netball v Hawley Place Barfield 7 0 Hawley Place The girls in Year 4 all played in this game against Hawley Place who brought a large number of Year 3 and Year 4 girls. I was pleased with the way our girls played and as we used this as a coaching opportunity. They showed improvement in their movement on court and accuracy of throwing. Well done girls. Barfield Player of the Match was Maya Tilney. Ros Milton Wednesday 8 th November Football Tournament at Churcher s U11 (A) 11 schools took part in this annual Tournament and we played all of the other schools in a round-robin. Our boys played some excellent football throughout the afternoon against schools with 3 times as many boys from which to choose. Barfield was the smallest school involved and yet at the half way stage we had played 5 and were un-defeated with 4 wins and 1 draw to our credit. Eren Aydin was outstanding in attack and scored 9 goals with Alexander Blake-Pead and Kit Littlefield claiming many assists and a couple of goals each, to add to an excellent afternoon of football. Jamie MacDougall was outstanding in goal with Ben Avery, Pfumo Heaton- Adegbile, Toby Smith, Jerome Sturridge and William Birkbeck all demonstrating good defensive play throughout a very demanding afternoon of matches. The following results were achieved: Barfield 1 0 CCJS (B) Barfield 1 1 St Edmund s Barfield 2 1 Dunhurst Barfield 1 0 Oakwood Barfield 2 0 Meon Cross Barfield 0 2 Princes s Mead Barfield 1 1 CCJS (A) Barfield 0 1 PGS Barfield 4 0 The Royal Barfield 1 2 Alton School Well done to all the boys who took part. I was extremely proud of your efforts and behaviour throughout the afternoon. You were a credit to Barfield School. Ray Taylor Mixed Challenge Match v Conifers U9 (H) Barfield 3 2 Conifers The Under 9s joined forces with Conifers for a Challenge Match. Multi-ball Football, Noughts and Crosses and Aeroball were some of the activities in which the teams competed. The children all had a great afternoon. Mark Gore
MATCH ROUND-UP Wednesday 8 th November (continued) Netball v Grey House U11 Barfield 9 5 Grey House The U11 team played a very nice, controlled game from the beginning. Passing was accurate and movement on the court agile. The cold set in in the last quarter and mistakes started to appear, but we still kept command of the game. Well done girls and thank you to the players who swapped sides to be the Grey House honourary player each quarter. Emma Kimura-Young was chosen as Barfield Player of the Match. Ros Milton Netball v Grey House U10 Barfield 8 3 Grey House Our team showed some fast passing, leading to numerous attempts at goal. Throughout the game the girls competed hard to overcome their opposition and eventually won rather convincingly. Well done girls! Barfield Player of the Match - Jess Spencer Godfrey. Christina Tupper Thursday 9 th November Netball v Greenfield U9 (H) Barfield 6 0 Greenfield The U9 girls played a strong match against Greenfield, winning 6-0. They demonstrated excellent marking and intercepting skills and also had the opportunity to swap around with their positions to try something new. Player of the match Sofia Tinnirello, as voted by the other team, even managed to get a goal from the edge of the circle; which she had been practising earlier. Well done to all of the girls! The U8 girls had a training match at the same time, against Greenfield, and enjoyed themselves greatly. Jenny Henman Mixed Squash v Barrow Hills The Year 8 students enjoyed an afternoon of squash at King Edward's School, Witley with Barrow Hills. After warming up and picking teams they took on Barrow Hills in a series of friendly games. The aim of the afternoon was to experience the sport and to improve their skills. This aim was definitely achieved and some high class technique as well as good tactical awareness was developed throughout the afternoon. Well done. Steve Hollands
Friends Christmas Market Saturday 2 nd December, 12.00noon pm The Friends are gearing themselves up for another successful Christmas Market and in order to avoid a rush nearer the time, they would appreciate your help. If you are able to donate any of the items listed below, please would you bring them to the School Office by next Friday 17 th November. Many thanks in advance. Secret Santa Gifts Each year, Barfield students have the opportunity to purchase gifts for their parent/s in a Secret Santa. We rely on donations to make this very popular event possible. Please can we ask you to search in your cupboards for any new/unused items which may be suitable to be given to an adult (male or female) by a child. Tickets for this event will be on sale via Jumblebee in the near future. Toy Tombola New or unused unwanted gifts/books/toys/ DVDs suitable for children for this popular stall. Raffle Barrel of Booze Instead of asking each class to make up a hamper, we will be raffling off a barrel of booze as well as other raffle prizes from local business at this year s Christmas Market. Again, we rely entirely on your support and generosity in order to make this possible. Please can we ask you to search for and donate any unopened and in-date alcoholic beverages. We are searching for donations from shops or businesses for the Raffle. In previous years, we have been strongly supported by local and national businesses, especially where parents of Barfield students have had a connection to the organisation. If you or your company are able to offer any assistance with donations for raffle prizes, please can you the Years organising team at: christmasmarket@barfieldschool.com

The fireworks display, once again, provided fantastic viewing and the bonfire was a roaring success.
