Friday 29th September 2017 Barfield News Website: Charity Day Results With all the results now in from the Cothill Charity Day, it is evident just how much effort the children put in to trying to cover as many metres as they could, whether they were running, swimming or climbing. There were, unfortunately, quite a few absentees on the day though, with Year 6 being particularly badly hit. The table below shows the combined totals by class for each of the three aspects, in addition to every class's total and the total number of metres which were run, swum and climbed (as well as the overall combined total of 269,884 metres!) The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountain in each of England (Scafell Pike at 978 metres), Wales (Snowdon at 1085 metres) and Scotland (Ben Nevis at 1345 metres), giving a grand total of 3408 metres. CLASSES 8A 6T 5M 4A 4B 3P 2K 1B RL RR OWLS OWLETS TOTALS RUN (M) SWIM (M) CLIMB (M) TOTAL (M) Between them, the children therefore covered enough distance in total to have scaled the mountains of The Three Peaks Challenge more than 79 times! They also climbed the height of any one of the three mountains and swam a distance which was higher than Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, as well as running over 5 1/2 marathons! This was an excellent team event, with everyone trying their hardest; however, particular congratulations go to the 21 children (10 of whom are in Year 4!) who individually covered more than the 3408 metres of The Three Peaks Challenge. The boy and girl who covered the furthest distance were 8A's Joshua Furneaux (5334 metres) and 4A's Charlotte Mitchell (4976 metres). Well done, Barfield! At the time of going to press, the total raised stood at 2,755. Thank you once again to everyone for their generosity. A few more pictures appear on the next page. The JustGiving page ( will remain active over the weekend, until Monday 2nd October 2017 for anyone who may wish to donate. Thank you. James Reid

Cothill Charity Day 2017

A New Arrival! There was much excitement in School on Monday, when Miss Marshall visited with baby Douglas!! After many cuddles in the staff room, baby Douglas then visited Owls and I think the look on Tessa's face says it all! Jo King What a tasty range of entries we had in from Year 6 (Group A) this week. It was lovely to see the children using the different skills needed to make treats such as savoury pastries, seriously chocolaty cup cakes and zesty lemon icing. The judges thoroughly enjoyed tasting them all and decided that first place should be given to Nathan Ellis who made a trio of the lightest chocolate cupcakes with careful and detailed icing. Particular mention should go to both Josh Jones, for his sausage Danish pastry and homemade tomato sauce, and to Ellen Jackson, for her deeply iced lemon cakes, as they were only one point behind the winner! Good luck to all those in Year 6 (Group B), I look forward to receiving your entries on Monday. The Queen of Hearts would have been very proud of the Hands On group this week. They made some delicious apple and jam tarts together and their particular target was not only to develop their tricky pastry skills but to make all the tarts the same shape and size, neatly presented! A particular mention goes to Kalash who used her maths vocabulary to describe them as 'congruent' shapes!! Great fun. GUITAR Trial Sessions Our guitar teacher, James Shannon, has offered to hold some trial guitar sessions should your child like to learn the guitar. Lessons will take place in the lunch break. If you are interested, please would you sarah.grantham@barfieldschool.com. to Eloise Chapman who celebrates next week.

Y8 Assembly On Wednesday, Year 8 hosted a whole school assembly which reflected on our European Day of Languages which took place on 26 th September. They had to generate a PowerPoint Presentation, research facts, come up with their own discussion points and then present it clearly and confidently to the school and staff. They did a BRILLIANT job and managed to get a very strong message across to the children. I felt proud of them all as they nervously stood and spoke for a full fifteen minutes, particularly when things didn't go to plan and they used flexibility of mind in order to carry on without error. A super experience for everyone. Thank you Year 8. Here are some facts they taught us: 75% of the world's population do not speak English. Over 60% of British trade is with non-english speaking countries. British business has the poorest language skills in Europe. People who can speak another language can earn up to 5000 more than colleagues who do not! Nelson Mandela was the former president of a country where at least 18 different languages are spoken. He said If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart. INSPIRATIONAL Old Barfieldian News Many congratulations to Alexandra Sharp who has been selected for the Surrey U15 girls rugby team. Ray Taylor On Tuesday, the children in Years 3 to 8 were very lucky to have a visit and an inspirational talk from the GB Triathlete, Barnaby Gray! He spoke to the school about his achievements and the path he took to get there. He is involved in all things Multi-Sport including competing for Great Britain in a number of World and European Championships, and he is still competing for GB as an Age Grouper. He has competed in all distances and has enjoyed many overseas experiences including the USA Lake Placid Full Ironman. European Day of Languages Tuesday was European Day of Languages, and this year we celebrated by saying the word banana in as many languages as possible. Nathan Chan won the Golden Banana Award for managing the most! John Milne The children took away the message that never giving up pays off. He was not born a triathlete but he made himself one!

MATCH ROUND-UP Wednesday 27 th September Netball v Longacre U11 (A) Barfield 9 6 Longacre After a poor start to the game, our girls began to work better, both individually and as a team. We tried players in different positions during the game as we played 6 sections, playing against their 2 teams in turn. There may still be a lot of work to do on their movement about the court, but it was showing improvement throughout. Well done girls. Players of the Match were Emma Kimura- Young and Sacha Mullins. Ros Milton Netball v Longacre U10 (A) Barfield 6 2 Longacre Barfield had an excellent start to the game, maintaining possession and efficiently getting the ball to the shooters. Along with excellent defending, this gave us a 5-nil lead after the second quarter. Although Longacre fought hard in the second half of the match, our girls maintained their focus and produced a 6-2 win. Well done girls for a fantastic game and congratulations to Kalash Rai for being chosen as Player of the Match. Alex Bouckley Thursday 28 th September Netball v Longacre U9 (H) Barfield 3 2 Longacre This was a tough match from the start. The teams were evenly matched and made it difficult for their opposition to score. By the end of the second quarter, it was 1-1 and each team s defence was doing an excellent job of keeping the ball away from the shooting circle. Towards the end of the third quarter Barfield played brilliantly, getting the ball straight to the shooters to give us a 3-1 lead. The final score was 3-2. A well-deserved win after putting in a great deal of effort. Well done to Maya Tilney who was voted Player of the Match. Alex Bouckley A Message from Woodlarks Camp Site The Friends chose to support Woodlarks Camp Site in 2015/16 and donated 5000 to them from funds raised through the 2016 Fun Run and Summer Ball. "I just wanted to let you know that we used the funds raised by yourselves to purchase the new pool controller which was installed at the season start. As a result we did not lose a single session of swimming this year and camps have been able to access the pool whenever they have wanted. The new controller has worked brilliantly. Please pass on our sincere thanks to everyone involved in raising the funds." Nick Richard. Wednesday 4 th October am P h o n I c s W o r k s h o p for Owls - Year 2 Parents (in the HC) Friday 3 rd November pm The Barfield Bonfire Night is one of the social highlights of the year so bring along all family members and friends for to enjoy the fun. There will be a huge bonfire, a fantastic firework display and live music. As ever, there will be snacks, drinks and food available. Barfield friends would be grateful if you could pre-order, and pay for, your hot dogs when you buy your tickets at Entry and extra hot dogs cannot be guaranteed on the night. We sold out last year so best to get all tickets in advance.

It is a great opportunity to encourage reading amongst the children, and as the library receives 60% of the value of sales, provided we reach a certain limit, it is well worth supporting. There are only 86 days until Christmas (heh! heh!) so why not come and see if there are any special offers! John Milne WATCH OUT! CHICKEN POX IS ABOUT! It's A Wrap After 3 days of intensive filming it is now over to School Reel to produce a 3 minute film which sums up just what a wonderful school Barfield is. Over the last few days we have filmed nearly every activity, lesson and year group in the school and it's a useful reminder of just how much the children fit in to their day. A really big thank you to the children for their enthusiasm, the staff for their flexibility and to those parents who were brave enough to be filmed. We look forward to sharing the final version with you in the next few weeks. Debbie May
