Rugby 1 st XV Sport Boys Photo provided by Andrew Coope. Thank you. Won 6. Lost 5. Drawn 5. Points for 108. Points against 65. Although the 1st XV have had only a moderate season, several positions were filled by young players who will be able to play for another two seasons. There has not been a great deal of attacking power in the backs, but on the other hand their defence has been sound. Johnson, at stand-off, in his first year of senior rugby gained a final county trial and generally had a good season. Our strength lay in the forwards. Williamson was invaluable in the lineouts while Nuttall frequently gave the backs possession with his superb hooking. In the back row Tate and Newitt turned out to be the great attacking forces in the team and Chaplin, in his third season with the 1st XV, was always in the forefront. I would like to thank Mr. Tate and other members of staff for giving up their spare time to train the team, and Mr. Rhodes for keeping the pitches in excellent condition. Sugden, D. A., UVIA (Captain)

Rugby 2 nd XV Back Row L-R: Mr. Tate, Eric Wildman, Peter Buttle, Alvin Bashforth, Hunt, Tibble, John King, Colin Dawson, Caldwell, Tom Wild, Mr. Pacy Front Row L-R: Andrew Hudson, John Byrom, David Oxley, Peter Cooper, Vic Hryschko, David Shaw, Terry Logan Second XV Rugby report Cooper, P., U6S (Capt.) The 2nd XV have had a very successful season winning 12 and losing 2 of their 14 matches. The highlight of the season came against old rivals, Heath G.S., and after a very hard-fought game Hemsworth emerged victorious by 14 points to 11. The easiest win of the season came in the last match against Doncaster T.G.S who were beaten 46 points to nil. During the season a good pack has been welded together; led by Hryschko they became a mobile unit which combined extremely well. A particularly good back row of Buttle, Tibble and Hunt, emerged. The backs have also played well together and in every match have shown themselves superior to the opposition. Connolly and Midgley deserve mention. I am sure that next season if any of the team are called upon for 1st XV duty they will fill in admirably. Record: Played 14 ; Won 12 ; Lost 2 ; Points for 242 ; Points against 23. Third XV Rugby Report Although they played very few games, the 3rd XV have had a very satisfactory season, having won three and drawn one of the four matches played. Despite frequent unavoidable changes they played well and enthusiastically as a team. The most entertaining game was against the West Riding Police Cadets. Although the opposition were considerably bigger, Hemsworth never lost heart and after being 5 - nil down went ahead to win, 14 ponits to 5. Coop had a fine attacking game and Orange covered well with some effective tackling. On the whole the whole the side had a very enjoyable season and provided some useful reserves for the 2nd XV. Special mention should be made of Byrom, C.J., the pack leader, who inspired the forwards, and of Coop, the most effective threequarter. Fearnley, G., 5R (Captain)

Colts (U15 XV) Rugby Photo contributed by Dave Fearnside. Thank you, Dave. Back Row L-R: Mr. Tate, Stuart Haigh, Jack Marston, Richard Baxendale, Neil Stone, Michael Osborne, Keith Shelley, Bashforth, Howard Fisher, Senior Front Row L-R: Alan Howey, Peter Marsh, Allan Skelton, David Fearnside, Hudson, Christopher Higham Played 12; Won 12; Points for 293; Points against 62. The Colts were very successful this season winning all their matches, and in six out of the twelve games the side was considerably weakened by taking part in trials. Howey, Shelley, Stone, Fisher, Osborne and Fearnside all played for South Yorkshire and Fisher followed in Johnson's footsteps in representing England against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park. Fly-half Howey, who was well served by Hudson, greatly helped the side score nearly three hundred points, with his deceptive 'dummy' and sidestep. However, the skill of the backs is of little avail without the strength of the pack and in this respect Osborne, Fisher and Shelley were versatile forwards. Stone, besides being a safe full-back, kicked many goals. The season's success emphasises the importance of keen reserves, the boys who turn out faithfully for practices week after week knowing that not likely to get a game on Saturday. The Colts team appreciates their support. Fearnside, D., (Captain)

Rugby U14XV Back Row L-R: Mr. Knox, William Hibbert, Alan Tingle, Eric Wheater, Peter Ryan, Simon Jackson, Craig Barclay, John Fradgely, Mr. Williams Front Row L-R: Kenneth Bates, Clive Jones, Gary Sykes, Noel Pickering, Robert Moxon, John Reevell, Peter Hryschko Played 13; Won 11 ; Lost 2; Drawn 0; Points for 285; Points against 55. Eleven convincing victories, two narrow defeats; this has been a very successful season for the Under 14 XV. Most of the points were scored by forwards, the mainstay of the side. Well led by Pickering, they quickly settled and developed into a very efficient and highly mobile pack. With outstanding work by Fradgeley in the line and swift heeling by Moxon from the set scrummages, they completely dominated many of our matches, though often up against heavier opponents. The backs took longer to settle down and their weak tackling often let the side down early in the season. Eventually Jackson was moved from the pack to partner Buckingham in the centre and Hibbert converted to fly-half alongside Bates, and these changes brought added strength and rapid improvement. With ample possession from the forwards there were many chances for Gaskell and Sykes to use their speed on the wings. Once settled the side ran up 9 consecutive wins, though without being able to find a consistent place-kicker to convert tries into goals. The team wish to thank Mr. Williams and Mr. Knox for giving up their time for training and coaching. N.W. Pickering, 3B (Capt.)

U13XV Back Row L-R: Mr. Smith, Jones T., Derek Ward, Robert Lunn, John Covell, Steven Cooper, Glynn Baugh, Brian Marston, Roger Hemingway, Mr. Shelton Front Row L-R: 1, Terry Horobin, Ronald Dyson, Terry Mills, Tony Horsfall, John Duckett, Bartle T. The Under 13's have enjoyed a very successful season, thanks to the help of Mr. Smith, Mr. Shelton, and of Mr. Hodgson who left us at Christmas. As a result of some good tackling by Marston and Horrobin, the tries against were few. Most of our tries were scored by the threequarters and accurate goal-kicking by Mills contributed much to the team's success. Out of 9 matches, 6 were won, 1 lost and 2 drawn.

All players have still a lot to learn about playing as a team but if this year's enthusiasm is maintained further experience should soon rectify these weaknesses. 13 School Cross Country Report This year tile cross-country season opened with a run against Sheffield University on Wednesday, March 6th. Only the Senior team took part, and although Sheffield won, they did well to concede only six points to a strong side. Two days later, the full school team took part in a triangular meeting at Doncaster against Doncaster Grammar School and Doncaster Technical Grammar School, and won all three sections convincingly. In their next event, the Northern Schools' Cross Country Championships at Disley, the teams did fairly well, with two outstanding performances by Dearnley who came twenty-eighth out of five hundred and eighty competitors in the Colts' event, and Byrom, who finished twenty-eighth out of six hundred and thirty six in the Junior race. Buttle was the first senior home at one hundred and one out of four hundred and ninety-two runners. The season closed with a home win over Wath Grammar School, all sections, Junior, Intermediate and Senior winning their team events. Hawkes, B., L6R (Captain) Boys' Hockey The Boys' Hockey Team has had a moderate season, having won 1 and lost seven of the matches played. The season was interrupted by bad weather, which spoiled what chances we had of matching last year's team in the feat of winning as many games as we lost. At Christmas we lost two seasoned campaigners in the person Moorhouse and Farrar. Both had played outstanding parts in the team and of course Moorhouse captained the team for the first term. The gaps they left were adequately filled by Thompson and Taylor who had little opportunity of proving themselves, but did not disgrace themselves in few matches played this term. The attack has had a good scoring record. Special mention should be made of the exploits of Mosley, who has been prominent for his scoring all season, and of Fletcher who proved a fast, clever right wing. I would like to thank Mr. Butler and Mr. Owen for the time they devoted to coaching the team, Mr. Rhodes for his expert care of the pitch and Dixon, who has been an indefatigable worker behind the scenes in post of secretary, as well as playing full-back. David Freeman.
