2 WELCOME TO SPECIAL RECREATION! OVERVIEW The Chicago Park District is a national leader in serving individuals with disabilities. Starting in 1965, we began training park employees on ways to better serve Chicago citizens with disabilities. In 1968, Chicago became the birth place of the Special Olympics with the park district playing an integral role in its development. Today, the Chicago Park District strives to enhance the lives of Chicagoans with disabilities through providing a variety of recreation and leisure opportunities. ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS Intended for individuals with a primary physical disability and individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Programs include wheelchair sports, adaptive sports and additional recreation opportunities. DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PROGRAMS Specialized year-round activities to meet the recreational needs of individuals who have all types of hearing loss, from early childhood through adulthood. SPECIAL OLYMPICS PROGRAMS Year-round sports opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and older. SPECIAL RECREATION PROGRAMS Designed to provide opportunities that will enhance skill development, encourage socialization, and promote independence for individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. VETERANS PROGRAMS In the spirit of serving those who have served we offer a range of programs and events for United States Veterans, active military and their families.
