3 Scots Water Polo at a Glance Welcome to Scots Water Polo The Scots College introduced Water Polo to its summer sport program in 1988 and has gone on to become one of the most successful schools in NSW, both in competition triumphs and representative honours. In 2005, Scots were the Combined Independent Schools premiers for the seventh time. The College also has a wonderful tradition of success in Australian representative teams, with players regularly selected in CIS, State and National teams. The College competes in a combined GPS/CAS summer competition during Terms 4 and 1 and enters six teams 1sts and 2nds Opens, 16A and B, and 14 A and B. The new Year 7 boys in Term 1 compete in an U13 competition. Competition matches take place on Saturday mornings between 8.00am and 1.30pm at various pools around Sydney. Other schools competing in the GPS/CAS competition are Barker, Knox, Newington, St Aloysius, St Ignatius, St Joseph s, Sydney High, Trinity Grammar and Waverley see draw on opposite page. Fixtures are played at Newington, St Ignatius, Barker, Knox Grammar, Cabarita, Ashfield and Scots pools see p 5 for details. Water Polo is a physically demanding contact sport requiring a high level of fitness. Players in the U14s and U16s have two sessions per week and the 1sts and 2nds three, either at the Scots pool or Redleaf see p 5 for details. The Water Polo uniform is available through the Scots Uniform Shop and is compulsory for all players see p 4 for details. Scots Players and Club Water Many Scots players also play Water Polo with Sydney clubs, which helps to develop their skills, fitness and game play, while benefiting school teams with added experience. Clubs enter teams in the Metropolitan Competition, which runs in both summer and winter, and from here boys go on to be selected in State and National teams and NSWIS Squads. We would like to congratulate the following Scots players who were selected in NSW State teams: NSW U14 Dugald O Neill; NSW U16 Nick Stephens and NSW U18 Sam Baraket, Lewis Taie and Matthew Willows. This season we also extend our support and best wishes to Scots old boy Thomas Whalan, as he embarks on qualifying for the London Olympics in 2012, which will be his fourth Olympics representing Australia. Last year, for the first time, Scots Prep offered Water Polo as a school sport to boys in Years 3-6 and now has over 60 boys enrolled in the program. The boys are training at the College pool and w i l l b e competing against other schools for the first time this season with other schools following Scots lead in expanding the sport in to the Prep school. We wish the Prep boys well and welcome any new players and their families to Scots Water Polo. The WPSG liaises closely with all Sydney Water Polo clubs, so that we can advise Scots players of opportunities outside school that may be of interest.
