1 Table Tennis England South West Area Newsletter As 2015 gathers pace it is a busy time for our South West team, and we have a number of exciting projects to update you on. We are still focussed on our Priority Zone work, with time and funding invested in Plymouth, Bristol, and Oxford this year. We are starting to see some great projects get up and running, and there has been encouraging partnerships developing in each of those cities. A few examples of the projects which are taking place in Priority Zones have been listed below: leisure centre sessions - Workplace table tennis, equipment donated and leagues/events set up - Satellite club sessions established for age group. - Community satellites - equipment donated to local groups who wish to set up their own TT sessions. - UKCC coach bursaries and workforce development in each area. As well as our work on Priority Zones and the Ping! city projects (more to come on that later in the newsletter) we have also continued to plan for future coaching courses, and have supported a number of clubs and organisations with Sport England Small Grants applications, helping to draw investment into our sport. If you are interested in applying for a Sport England Small Grant then please get in touch with one of our team. The recent Active People survey results show a very positive increase in the number of adults (14+) participating in table tennis in the SW area, but nationally we have shown a slight decline over the last 6 months, with our overall numbers being pretty level over the past 5 years. Despite our encouraging area results we are aware there is still a huge amount of work to be done. With sport battling for peoples ever decreasing leisure time it is our responsibility to find new and innovative ways of taking table tennis to the general public and drawing people in to our great sport. Our head office staff have been working to gather as much insight as possible over the past 12 months, and are using this insight to review our programmes and make them better. Thank you all for your patience and feedback when being asked to complete multiple surveys and questionnaires. Your feedback really is vital and will lead to improved programmes in the future. Enjoy this latest newsletter, and as ever if you have anything you want our help with don't hesitate to get in touch with one of our team. Chris Follow the South West Area on Twitter & Facebook! 2 An Update from the Talent Development Centre Since the beginning of December 2014 to February 2015 Plymouth TDC has had a very heavy competition programme. Players from the TDC have attended 7 different events with some great results. Joola Plymouth held it s first 2* event on 7 th December with TDC players dominating the later rounds of the events. On the 20 th December the TDC attended it s first senior event due to the cancellation of the Sussex 4*. Carl Baldry was the start of this event for the TDC winning both the band 4 and band 5 senior events. In January the TDC took 15 players to the East Midland 4* with several good performances gaining the younger players valuable experience. At the Bristol 1* 16 players attended with Ed Haskell winning the junior boys event and Josh Millman winning the cadet singles. Marketa Myskova took a small group of 5 players to the Cirencester 1* with Gemma Kerr winning the U13 girls and Holly Smithson winning the U11 girls events. On the same weekend the boys were at JBL with the Joola Plymouth team made up of TDC players winning Division Four in their first season after qualifying for the event last season. Other TDC players that represent other teams also fared well with Carl Baldry s team winning their division and Ed and George Haskell s team not only winning their division but also winning the team of the weekend award. TDC players also dominated the Devon Schools individuals with Jordan Bone, Ed Haskell, Ben Edmunds, Emily Haskell and Holly Smithson all winning their events to qualify for the national finals. On the training front Joola Plymouth and the TDC hosted a full England Youth Squad training camp. This ran alongside the usual TDC squad training. The TDC also trained for 3 days with the Welsh Primary School squad and Jordan Wykes from Jersey. Eggbuckland school was turned into a table tennis city with over 30 tables being used at various times in four different halls and over 1000 hours of training took place during the February half term. The TDC kitchen staff supplied breakfast, lunch and evening meals from 7am until nearly 10pm on some days and a big thanks must go out to Debbie Whiting, Jan Marshall and all the parents that helped prepare and serve the excellent food throughout the week. On the Wednesday evening TDC sparring partners, TDC players and the England and Wales squads put on a fantastic spectacle of table tennis during the match play evening, watched by over 150 local table tennis enthusiasts. Some fantastic matches were witnessed and it was a chance for the TDC players to watch and learn from the best players in the country. Paul 2

4 Coaches Corner Aled Howell, Coach Development Officer, provides you with the latest updates Updates - Please keep looking at the website on a regular basis so you do not miss some of the events that are happening. The coaching page holds information on coach licence, courses, CPD, application forms and butterfly skills. We welcome any feedback on the website and any suggestions regarding what you would like to see. - A Sports Coach UK workshop widget has been uploaded on the website, workshops can be searched directly through the widget. - A SCUK Effective Communication workshop is to be delivered in Exeter, Devon on the 30 th March. This is to coincide with 2 new deaf focused clubs starting in the county and a commitment to improving our inclusive provision. Places are limited and the cost is only 10 thanks to funding from UK Deaf Sport. Fill in the booking form attached and return to claire.colman@devon.gov.uk to reserve a place. Workshops At the moment Table Tennis England have a limited amount of CPD workshops running due to the programme being reviewed. The reading task and UKAD course can still be completed to fulfil the licence requirements. On the website we are advertising County Sports Partnerships workshops (first aid, safeguarding or CPD). More opportunities may be available in your area, so contact your County Sports Partnership for more information. Sports Coach UK are still running CPD courses throughout the country. Coaches Coaching courses are filling up quickly and some have been oversubscribed. We advise booking early to avoid disappointment. Please note that potential learners need to be able to attend all three days of the course; we cannot book learners on two different courses. Two UKCC Level 1 courses are in the process of being arranged in both Plymouth and Oxford. Please continue to check the for any up and coming courses. All information on UKCC courses can be found on: Coach Licence reminder Unlicensed coaches need to obtain the following before applying: - Certificated completion of a Safeguarding & Protecting Children workshop valid for 3 years - Certificated completion of an Essential First Aid course valid for 3 years - Completion of a CPD workshop between December 2013 and the present day - A valid DBS check (formerly known as a CRB check) To evidence these prerequisites a copy of the certificates can be sent to coaching@tabletennisengland.co.uk or posted to Coaching and Performance, Table Tennis England, Norfolk House, 88 Saxon Gate West, Milton Keynes, MK9 2DL. 4

The Southern event will be taking place at Cippenham TTC and the South West event will take place at JOOLA Plymouth TTC. Entry forms for both events are available on: Southern Region: South West Region: Closing date for entries is 1st April For the full exemption list visit: Somerset Update We are making a slight change to the way we support you in the SW area. As of now Aled Howell will be taking over the responsibility for being the first point of contact for all clubs, coaches, and enquiries in Somerset. Previously Chris Brown had been the initial point of contact. This slight change comes as a result of this summer s upcoming Ping! Exeter, Plymouth and Cornwall projects, which Chris will be leading on from our SW team. You can still get in touch with any of us, but please note if you are in Somerset then Aled will be your first point of contact for general enquiries. 5
6 Issue 2 November 2014 This Girl Can This Girl Can is a nationwide campaign developed by Sport England and delivered in partnership with a wide range of organisations, to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. Around 30% of women across the UK aged 14+ take part in sport at least once a week but this campaign aims to increase that figure by breaking down any barriers and removing the fear of judgement. If you haven t already seen the television ad campaign, you can find the video on YouTube: To find out more about the campaign, please go to: South West Area Contact Details Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire & IOW, Wiltshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Devon, Somerset, Cornwall, and Avon Area Development Lead Chris Brown Tel: chris.brown@tabletennisengland.co.uk Development Officer Lisa Williams Tel: lisa.williams@tabletennisengland.co.uk Coach Development Officer Aled Howell Tel: aled.howell@tabletennisengland.co.uk Talent Development Coach Paul Whiting Tel: paul.whiting@tabletennisengland.co.uk
