2 INTRODUCTION NAB AFL Auskick is the key introductory program for primary aged children and their families. The program provides boys and girls with a fun and safe Australian Football experience in a community or school-based setting. There are approximately 300 Auskick centres that operate in South Australian schools and local football clubs. NAB AFL Auskick centres are driven by volunteers and parent helpers. Your help is greatly appreciated! This activity booklet comprises of 10 week activity plans for you to utilise during the program. Please take out the week of the session you are looking to conduct, cut along the dotted line and use. The back of each activity card will contain a modified version if the activity is too simple for your group of participants All NAB AFL Auskick Centre Coordinators / coaches are bound by the AFL Coaches Code of Conduct. This booklet is one of two that has been developed in This booklet should be used in conjunction with the Auskick Centre Coordinator manual. If you would like a copy of this manual please contact your local SANFL Development Staff.

3 RUN SHEET 24 hours prior Print out Auskick one-click report, *Please refer to Auskick Coordinator Manual for instructions on how to get to the Auskick one-click report Organise groups (colour code and match with cones at session) It s recommended that centres use small groups e.g participants in each group Identify any new registrations so you can welcome them to Auskick Plan a minimum of 4 activities to be run as a circuit Check that you have enough equipment to conduct these activities Have a think about where they will be located on the oval minutes prior Set up stations Set up sign in area and gathering point Complete a ground inspection *Please refer to Auskick Coordinator Manual for ground inspection check list 15 minutes prior to session commencing Greet parents and children as they arrive Session begins Tick participants off the sign in sheet and notify them what colour group they are in and where they will gather Encourage parents and children to have a kick and catch Speak with parent helpers as they arrive and assign them a group or station Welcome (5 mins) Gather everyone at the meeting point and introduce the activities for the day and where each group will begin. Activity 1 (10 12 mins) Activity 2 (10 12 mins) Activity 3 (10 12 mins) Activity 4 / Grid Game (10 12 mins) Close (5 mins) Thank parent helpers, give out any notices about upcoming events or any news about upcoming sessions. 4 EXAMPLE MUD MAPS Set up may vary from centre to centre. Ensure your activities are set up safely away from cricket pitches, heavy foot or car traffic and any hazards that may be identified. 5 WEEK 1 - WELCOME NAME GAME Participants form groups of 5 forming a circle Players throw a ball to each other and upon catching the Ball must call out their own name. Groups are swapped every 3-5 minutes NUMBERS GAME In a designated area all players must run around with a Football in hand. After varying amounts of time (up to 20 seconds), a coach yells out any number. Participants must as quickly as possible form a group of that many players. Last group to form complete 2 star jumps. GOAL KICKING One ball each Ball to spin backwards Teach value of goal and point Different angles and distance HANDBALL IN PAIRS Participants handball back and forth in pairs Focus points are: Thumb on Outside of Fist Stand side on to target Steady hand holding the ball Swinging arm hitting the Cross on the ball Challenges: Most in 1 Minute, Opposite Hand, Race to 10 passes.

7 WEEK 2 BALL CONTROL PICKING BALL UP OFF THE BROUND Players face each other behind cone Ball starts on the ground between cones Player runs and scoops ball to chest proceeds to teammate and gives ball Player with ball places ball on ground and tags next player in line PARTNER CHEST MARK Player with ball throws (if advanced handballs) the ball to teammate Player practices chest mark Mini Game How many chest marks can partners do before dropping the ball PARTNER OVER HEAD MARK Player with ball throws (if advanced handballs) the ball to teammate Player practices overhead mark Mini Game How many overhead marks can partners do before dropping the ball MINI GAME CRAZY BALL Players pick ball up from cone Run to another cone and place ball down Coach blows whistle to make players freeze Any player with a ball in their hand receives a point Objective is to have little to no points

8 WEEK 2 BALL CONTROL PICKING UP MOVING BALL Stationary player on one side starts with the ball Player rolls the ball gently to teammate facing them Player moves to the ball and scoops ball to chest CHEST MARK ON THE RUN Stationary player on one side starts with the ball Player throws the ball gently to teammate facing them Player moves to the ball and chest marks the ball to chest OVER HEAD MARK ON THE RUN Stationary player on one side starts with the ball Player throws the ball gently to teammate facing them Player moves to the ball and overhead marks the ball in hands MINI GAME RELAY RACES One at a time, players run out to each cone At the first cone player scoops ball to chest Carry ball to second cone and complete either a chest mark or overhead mark As they run back to group the ball is placed back on the middle cone

9 WEEK 3 - KICKING PARTNER KICKING One ball between two 5m apart from each other Teach technique (hold ball straight, drop straight) Ball to contact footy at shoelaces Ball to spin backward ACCURATE KICKING Use goal posts or agility poles Pairs or small groups (depending on size and poles available) 5-10m from the pole Work on accuracy (toe pointed towards target) Ball to spin backwards GOALIE Pairs of cones, 5m apart Player stand in the middle acting as Goal Keepers 10m between each goal Players kick the ball end to end, trying different spin and angles to get past opposing Goalie. OUT NUMBERED More kids than footys Depending on group size (10 kids, 7 footballs) On coaches call kids with ball kick footy as far as possible Kids then turn and face opposite direction On coach call, kids chase after the footys Repeat, add variations (Change distance, lying on ground, hide ball, competition)

10 WEEK 3 KICKING WITH PARENTS PARTNER KICKING (WITH PARENT) One ball between two 5m apart from each other Teach technique (hold ball straight, drop straight) Ball to contact footy at shoelaces Ball to spin backward ACCURATE KICKING (WITH PARENT) Use goal posts or agility poles Pairs or small groups (depending on size and poles available) 5-10m from the pole Work on accuracy (toe pointed towards target) Ball to spin backwards GOALIE (WITH PARENTS) Pairs of cones, 5m apart Player stand in the middle acting as Goal Keepers 10m between each goal Players kick the ball end to end, trying different spin and angles to get past opposing Goalie. OUT NUMBERED (WITH PARENTS) Keep away game Kids v Parents Kicking only Area 15m x 15m

11 WEEK 4 - HANDBALL HANDBALL IN PAIRS Participants handball back and forth in pairs Focus points are: Thumb on Outside of Fist Stand side on to target Steady hand holding the ball Swinging arm hitting the Cross on the ball Challenges: Most in 1 Minute, Opposite Hand, Race to 10 passes. CLEAR THE CIRCLE Form a Circle with Cones Half group inside circle with ball, others outside without Inside group handball outside to Clear the Circle Outside group retrieve ball and handball back in After 2 minutes stop game, count Footys and declare winner CONE BALL 2 Teams / 2 cone colours Each team is allocated a cone colour o Each team tries to knock the Footys off the oppositions cones o Players pick up Footys not on a cone and place the ball back on top of their teams colour cones. After desired amount of time, stop and count up balls HANDBALL FOOTBALL 2 teams of approximately 6 Handballs only Maximum 5 steps with ball Ball handballed through 2 cones for a goal

12 WEEK 4 HANDBALL ACCURATE HANDBALL Use Goal Posts as the target 1 partner either side of post Handball back and forth aiming at post 1 point per hit HANDBALL ON THE RUN Form a circle of cones, with half group inside half out Inside group have a Footy each Inside players run with the ball and pass to an outside person Handballer then replaces outside player. Receiver then runs through the circle and pass to someone else CONE BALL 2 Teams / 2 cone colours Each team is allocated a cone colour o Each team tries to knock the Footys off the oppositions cones o Players pick up Footys not on a cone, handball to a team mate And place the ball back on top of their teams colour cone. After desired amount of time, stop and count up balls GAME 4 V 2 HANDBALL Within a square, 4 attackers, 2 defenders Attackers get 1 point per successful handball to each other Attackers are allowed a maximum of 5 steps Game stops when ball is intercepted or goes out of bounds

13 WEEK 5 MINI GAMES STUCK IN THE MUD All participants start with the ball excluding the tagger/s. When a participant is tagged, they must freeze with ball above head and legs apart. Participants who are not tagged can free teammates by rolling ball between the legs of tagged/stationary participants. Rotate tagger every 2-4 mins FILL THE BUCKET Square grid with a bin of footballs in the middle Two players stand in side square next to bin All other participants stand outside the grid On go the centre participants grab footballs and handball to an area inside the square Outside players objective is to pick up the ball and place back into the bin BULLSEYE Participants are split in half with a ball each Standing either side of the bullseye they take turns in kicking the ball, aiming for the centre circle Centre is 10pts, outer circle is 5pts and outside both circles is 1pt GRID GAMES 6 v 6 games of Football. No tackling, smoothering, bumping or bouncing. 2 per zone, rotate players. Maximise involvement FORWARD MIDFIELD BACKLINE

14 WEEK 5 MINI GAMES STUCK IN THE MUD - ADVANCED All participants start with the ball excluding the tagger/s. When a participant is tagged, they must freeze with ball between their feet. Participants can free teammates by passing their ball to frozen player and receiving a one two. Rotate tagger every 2-4 mins FILL THE BUCKET - ADVANCED Add additional centre players Add multiple bins BULLSEYE - ADVANCED Participants can be moved further back from target Target can be made smaller GRID GAMES 6 v 6 games of Football. No tackling, smoothering, bumping or bouncing. 2 per zone, rotate players. Maximise involvement FORWARD MIDFIELD BACKLINE

15 WEEK 6 KICKING & HANDBALL GOAL KICKING One ball each Ball to spin backwards Teach value of goal and point Different angles and distance PARTNER KICKING One ball between two 5m apart from each other Teach technique (hold ball straight, drop straight) Ball to contact footy at shoelaces Ball to spin backward SCORE ZONE Two teams Area 25m End zone 3m x 15m Handball ONLY Must catch in the end zone to score S C O R E Z O N E S C O R E Z O N E SKITTLE BALL Two teams Handball to knock balls off cone Area 25m x 15m

16 WEEK 6 KICKING & HANDBALL (WITH PARENTS) GOAL KICKING One ball each Ball spin backwards Different angles Parents involved (kick ball back to child) PARTNER KICKING (WITH PARENT) One ball between two 5m apart from each other Teach technique (hold ball straight, drop straight) Ball to contact footy at shoelaces Ball to spin backward SCORE ZONE (WITH PARENT) Two teams Handball ONLY Handball to parent in score zone to score S C O R E Z O N E S C O R E Z O N E SKITTLE BALL (WITH PARENT) Two teams Handball to knock balls off cone Area 25m x 15m

17 WEEK 7 GAME EDUCATION HOLDING POSITION Players approximately 15m away from each other Kick the ball to each other up and back down the line Race against other teams Focus on holding position at each cone STANDING THE MARK Groups of 4 o 2 Attackers 2 Defenders Kick to opposite group Defender stands mark Attacker pushes back and kicks over Defender Repeat and swap after 5 kicks RUCK WORK ACTIVITY Groups of 5 o 2 v 2 and 1 Umpire Umpire throws up ball 2 rucks compete and try to hit to 2 rovers Rotate every 5 turns Ruck Rover Umpire Ruck Rover GRID GAMES 6 v 6 games of Football. No tackling, smoothering, bumping or bouncing. 2 per zone, rotate players. Maximise involvement FORWARD MIDFIELD BACKLINE

18 WEEK 7 GAME EDUCATION HOLDING POSITION & LEADING Ball to start at one end (back line) Player to lead one way, into space. Player to YELL for the ball Player to mark, turn around and kick to next group leading player Continues until it gets to the end (forward line) Repeat STANDING THE MARK Kick around a square After kick run to the next cone and stand the mark Next player to take 5+ steps backwards and kick over the man to the next group. Repeat process. RUCK WORK Partners One will ruck (tap ball) One will throw ball into the air and call out the colour cone Person rucking to hit to colour cone GRID GAMES 6 v 6 games of Football. No tackling, smoothering, bumping or bouncing. 2 per zone, rotate players. Maximise involvement FORWARD MIDFIELD BACKLINE

19 WEEK 8, 9 & 10 ACTIVITIES & GAMES Start sessions with a mini game from previous weeks Chaos Fill the bucket Stuck in the mud etc Game Based learning Important points for game based learning: o Set rules FORWARD o Total of 6 v 6 for maximum participation o 3 per zone o Rotate positions MIDFIELD o Ensure all players get possessions o Have a parent in each zone to provide coaching o Ensure players are spread out for better game flow o Encourage teamwork (passing) BACKLINE Rules of the game Ensure that players are instructed of the rules prior to playing. Even the most simplest rule needs to be spoken about. Some important rules to cover are: Players must stay in their zone Only forwards can kick goals The ball must be in a players possession in each zone No soccering No tackling / bumping No throwing Player who makes decent effort to mark the ball will be paid a mark Auskick Coordinators can adapt rules to suit the skill level of participants. It is important to remember that all players must be involved and have as much possession as possible.
