1 CO-CURRICULAR NEWS First XVIII Football, huddle during their game against St Michael's. TERM 3, WEEK 5 FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 2016 Absentee line: BULLETIN Dear College Community, The winter co-curricular program has concluded for the bulk of our sporting teams and I would like to thank all of the coaches, players, team managers and families involved in making this year such a success. I would like to also recognize all of the boys who willingly volunteered to play additional games when teams were short of players, to all boys who helped out as an official and to those who ran water during football games. The boys who volunteered to assist are the ones who truly carry the spirit of Rostrevor and live out the desire to be men for others. In week 8, on the 16th of September, we will hold the Winter Co-curricular assembly to recognise the boys who have been judged to be the most valuable contributor to their team by presenting them with a trophy. Once all of the awards have been decided, letters will be sent to families inviting them to attend. The Term 4 nominations have been submitted based on all of the students who participated in teams of Badminton, Cricket, Tennis and WaterPolo in Term 1. If any students have special circumstances that would prevent them from fulfilling this obligation, they need to see me immediately. All teams have been entered on the basis of student participation and if boys withdraw it creates a situation where Rostrevor teams will be left short of players. 1ST XVIII FOOTBALL Rostrevor STMC Goal Kickers: Darcy Fogarty 5, Patrick Dawson 4, Harrison Petty 2, Guy Hutchinson 2, Luke Valente 2, Ankin Abbott 1, Lewis McCormack 1, Mihail Lochowiak 1, Nick Collins 1, Xavier Cubillo 1, Michael Dewson 1, Dylan Smith 1. Better Players: Xavier Cubillo, Toby Pink, Patrick Dawson, Darcy Fogarty, Bradley McCarthy, Josh Richards Game Summary: Our final game for season 2016 saw us play St Michael's College at home and the playing group were very keen to finish the season off strongly. With the aid of a slight breeze we started the 1st quarter well, dominating possession and keeping the ball trapped in our front half of the field. Our midfield were terrific around the stoppages, regularly winning the ball in congestion and getting the ball moving forward to a forward line who looked hungry to get on the score board. With our strong first quarter start, we quickly raced out to a 35 point lead at ¼ time. The second quarter was our best for the match kicking 8 goals 6 for the quarter as we were able to get our running game up and going. Our fast ball movement and handball overlap provided the opposition real problems as later in the quarter they began to get numbers back in defence to restrict our forward entry. In the times the opposition did get the ball forward, our back line positioned themselves well to regularly intercept the ball and only allow the opposition a score of 1 point going into the half time break. At half time we lead by 88 points. The 3rd quarter started similarly with us again dominating possession. With the opposition getting big numbers back to clog up our forward line, we did at times struggle to think our way going forward, often kicking the ball wide or directly to the opposition numbers. Our enthusiasm to create run through hand ball was still evident even though at times we did over use the ball and not get the balance quite right. We still finished the quarter kicking 4

We went into the ¾ time break with a commanding 116 point lead. In the last quarter with the game well in control, the opportunity was created for defenders Dylan Smith and Michael Dewson to play forward with each contributing a goal much to the enjoyment of their team mates. The team, after having a successful season, were able to enjoy the last quarter finishing with another 5 goals and still keeping the opposition goal-less for the game to run out eventual winners by a large 144 points. We had an even contribution from all players in a game that we controlled and all played well. Our midfield again put in a dominant performance having our best game clearance wise and high possession numbers. Xavier Cubillo after a tough week with the passing of his Pop, was in terrific touch winning a lot of possession and using the ball well to set up play with his calmness and composure. Toby Pink again continued his good form over recent weeks with another strong marking display and dominance in the ruck. Brad McCarthy and Guy Hutchinson both benefited from Toby s ruck work to win regular clearances. Up forward our 3 talls of Darcy Fogarty, Harrison Petty and Louis McCormack provided strong marking options. Darcy again finishing with another 5 goals. Up forward at ground level Patrick Dawson was influential and had a fine game finishing with 4 goals. Our backline was again rock solid with Cam Ball, Mihail Lochowiak and Josh Richards controlling half back and intercepting everything that came their way. It was great to see the boys finish off the season in great style and showing a continued improvement in both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. We now wait on the final results of the season to confirm if we have claimed the Messenger Shield for 2016 which would be great reward for the playing group. In closing I would like to put forward a few thankyou s. Firstly thankyou to all the 1st and 2nd XVIII players for embracing the program and challenging themselves to improve both as players and people. The group s effort and commitment went a long way towards re-establishing a strong team culture within the College. They were a terrific group to coach. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the year 12 s moving on from the College at the end of the year all the best in not only their football futures but also that of their work careers as well. No doubt our paths will cross again someday. I hope the remaining year 11 s can take ownership of the football program, show the way for the new players coming in and drive the program to another level in I would also like to thank Brett Giles, Shannon Simpson and Nic Kernahan for their assistance as coaches with the group. All have had a positive impact on the program and players. Thank you to Grant Bishop and Anthony Paech in their duties as runners and at times masseurs. Thank you to Andrew Robertson in his role as Team Manager and Jeff Fischer in his role as Head of Co-curricular, their support and assistance throughout the season has been invaluable and greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank the parents for their support throughout the season. It has been appreciated and has helped us put together a successful season. This season the College has re-established itself again as a strong football school and I look forward to seeing this continue in season Steve Symonds 1st XVIII Head Coach FIRST XVIII, Nick Platten Year 12 was a debutante in the final game of the season.
3 CO-CURRICULAR Photos from the Winter Season: IN OTHER CO-CURRICULAR NEWS: The Year 9A soccer team played tremendously well against Glenunga International High School in their qtr final match of the state knockout competition, however were defeated 3-1. The boys represented themselves and the College with great sportsmanship and played with passion throughout the competition. Year 11 Harrison Rahaley (Pictured Top Left) was recognized as the U18 MVP for the SA Rugby association at a recent function. The award stands as a fitting tribute to Harrison for his consistently outstanding season. Year 10 Luke Valente backed up a good performance against St Michael's in the Rostrevor 1st XVIII football side on Saturday by debuting for Norwood Reserves on Sunday against Port Adelaide. Luke kicked 3 goals in Norwood s 13 point win, which is an impressive performance for anyone, but made even more special given that he is still eligible for U16 s.
