3 O V E R V I E W O F T H E E V E N T Introduction The Footballers Who Went To War aims to be an informative, educational and commemorative event to remember those footballers who fought in the wars of the 20th Century. The event will be hosted by Paul Fletcher MBE (Ex-Professional Footballer and Former Chief Executive of Burnley Football Club). Invitees The event will play host to a number of executive guest speakers including ; Phil Stant (Falklands War Veteran and Ex-Professional Footballer), John Hutchinson (Leicester City FC Club Historian) and guests from the National Football Museum. Other invited VIP's include the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Eddy Newman and representatives from Manchester United & Manchester City and the Director of UCFB, Brendan Flood. Local schools and sixth form colleges from in and around East Manchester have been invited to attend the event to create a beneficial educational event for the school children and give the event a community feel as we aim to involve those in the Greater Manchester area and inform them more on those footballers who fought for their country and in some cases paid the ultimate price. Event Details The event will feature exhibits kindly donated especially for the event by the National Football Museum which will include Sam Wadsworth's England cap (Lancashire born Ex-Professional Footballer and Veteran of the First World War). Upon arrival at the event the invitees will be able to see CJ-2A Tank and Army Jeep welcoming them to the event. Furthermore the event will feature a display of over 60 football scarves each with a story to tell about a First World War Footballer Veteran who fought for both "Club and Country".

The National Football Museum explains how and why football has become the people s game, a key part of England s heritage and way of life. A veteran of the Falklands War and formerly attached to the SAS, Phil played football at a professional level and went on to score over 150 times in the Football League, playing for 19 clubs over a

6 I N T R O D U C I N G P H I L S T A N T Phil Stant will have a half hour time slot to talk about his life experiences including his football career and his involvement in the Falklands War. Phil Stant is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker. A veteran of the Falklands War and formerly attached to the SAS, Phil played football at a professional level and went on to score over 150 times in the Football League, playing for 19 clubs over a 23 years long playing career. Over his career in total he made 500 Appearances and scoring 193 Goals. Most notably for Cardiff City, Mansfield Town, Lincoln City, Bury and Hereford United. MILITARY CAREER Stant joined the army as a teenager and was billeted at Aldershot Garrison for his training and played for local non-league club Camberley Town. In 1982, at the age of just 18, Stant was sent to the Falkland Islands as part of operations of the Falklands War. During his time in the conflict, Stant was witness to the Bluff Cove Air Attacks, There he was witness to the Argentinian aerial attack on the two warships and was one of the first on the scene afterwards where he helped wounded soldiers. Stant has described his experiences in the aftermath as "the day I grew up" due to the injuries he witnessed. He progressed into the SAS and also worked as part of a bomb disposal unit before turning his attentions to football. His experiences in the South Atlantic were the subject of a 2007 ITV documentary, "Falklands 25: A soldier's story".

7 E D U C A T I O N A N D T H E C O M M U N I T Y The event is aims to be educational and informative in its delivery to provide a fantastic learning and cultural experience for your students particularly those studying conflicts of the 20th Century e.g. First and Second World Wars etc. or sports students with in interest in the history behind the beautiful game and how the hardtimes of war impacted those heroic players. Almost every football team in the league today sent players to the front between 1914 and Many never returned, and those that did were never the same again. The National Football Museum and the Woodland Trust have launched a project called For Club and Country, remembering football s involvement in the First World War, To make the event further educational, there will be a display of football scarves from over 60 teams that had a player who fought in the First World War. Underneath each of the scarves will feature that players profile with a description of the involvement that player had in the war and a little history about themselves, a fact about the team itself during the war and a QR code at the bottom for visitors to scan to bring them to the Woodland Trust's website "For Club and Country" to find out more.
