3 Monash University upset things in Junior Section 1, beating North Old Boys by nearly 5 goals, and the Blacks beat the Blues by 14 points In the Reserves, De La Salle thrashed North Old Boys, Scotch beat Melburnians by 5 points, Reservoir went down to Old Haileybury by 8 points, and Power House surprised St Kevin's with a 3-point win Heatherton crushed West Brunswick, Commonwealth Bank beat St Bede's by 10 points and Footscray Tech, won with a score of 1-4 (10 points) Their opponents, LaTrobe Reds kicked only 6 behinds What a battle that must have been! TRIBUNA L (JUNE 25th ROUND) R Divirgilio (Bulleen United ) was found guilty of striking M Lockwood (St Bede's O C) and suspended for three matches M McArthur-Allen (Bulleen United) was found guilty of striking P Fogarty (St Bede's O C) and severely reprimanded P Manning (Old Carey Gramm Reserv es) was found guilty of striking J Rudd (Hampton Reserves) an d suspended for seven matches Page 4 UMPIRE'S CORNER AUSTRALIAN RULE S It has often been mentioned of recent years that "Aussie Rules" captures the largest spectator audience per head of population of any fi eld sport in the world To the many followers of the sport it is obvious the game provides for teamwork, skill, speed and physical contact between players Also it creates excitement, tenseness, partisanship and controversy amongst spectators The rules of the Australian game of football have been framed in such a way that they permit players of various physiques to capitalise on their particular attributes Players of small stature are afforded the opportunity to excel by exploiting their speed and elusiveness whilst the taller and heavier players may utilise their natural advantages of height and weight THERE IS, IT SHOULD BE ALWAYS REMEMBERED, NO SUBSTITUTE FOR SKILL Not many followers of our great game stop to realise that the intention of the "Laws of the Game" is to help, not hinder, "Aussie Rules" and to afford protection to the fair player who is prepared to make the ball his sole, positive objective In order to cope with a vigorous fastmoving field game the laws must provide for many eventualities The umpire's advisor has a ve ry onerous task in helping and instructing umpires in the interpretation of such laws and how to deal with -the many eventualities that umpires are likely to meet during the course of any game in which they umpire Each year new situations occur which require an umpire to make an instant "reflex action" decision Such an honest decision may lead to controversy but a decision must be made After all that is what umpiring is all about - decision making Eve ry umpire has the right to discuss "situations for decision making" with the Umpires' Advisor It could result in the umpire deciding that the decision he made was perhaps an incorrect one (this does happen) but once an interpretation is given he can confidently be correct in the future The "Laws of the Game" come under close scrutiny eve ry year and additions, alterations and modifications are made by the "administration executive" Because of this it would do well for players, coaches, and officials to frequently peruse, like umpires, the rule book and become conversant with the laws under which their club plays Umpires are continually updating their knowledge of the rules, improving their mental and physical fitness and becoming aware of the vital and unique role they have to play in Australian Football THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 9, 1977 PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAME S A SECTION The heavy grounds are certainly proving a tipster's nightmare - however Ormond scrambled home last week to give me four winners I commisserate with ALF KEAM who has the unenviable task of scoring winncrs in "B" Section I've had a feeling for quite a time that Uni Blues would cause an upset - and they did! Today they will overwhelm Coburg - some people out Coburg way must now realise that even the "mighty" must sometimes fall to the respectability of B Section And if the Blues win they may move a rung up the ladder De La Salle, with more scoring shots than North last week will hold off Marcellin who appear to have surrendered their final four aspirations Caulfield Grammarians must keep winning -there is a chance that Ormond could slip from fourth place Today I expect Caulfield to keep their hopes high by accounting for University Blacks who have developed some inconsistency At Elsternwick Park, North Old Boys, helped by De La Salle inaccuracy last week, will remain unbeaten Ormond will improve after last week's "narrow squeak" but not sufficiently to take the points Mauro Borcich is in magnificent form for North but it's good to see some of the Ormond even-ness being restored - there is not total reliance on players such as Bruce Bourne and Bruce Corben Old Trinity showed amazing improvement last week and were a trifle unlucky Billy Peers showed the way with great leadership and here's hoping this improvement continues But I don't see a win today St Bernard's, with Peter Aughton, Joe Donlan, Mick Drennan and Gavin Mitchell all back to top form will prove too strong SELECTIONS: North Old Boys, Uni Blues, Caulfi eld Gramm, De La Salle, St Bernard's - JIM FIDGE B SECTION The men are being sorted out from the boys this last few weeks The top four look to have cleared out and from now on, the "relegation stakes", with four clubs on 16 points, will be starting to occupy the minds of the hapless coaches of these sides Selecting Old Melburnians over the past L'ew weeks has proven to be an unrewarding r :stime for a tipster This week they meet Monash Blues on equal points outside the four The winner will remain a contender, just, whilst the loser can forget the final series I'm going to follow my money and back the Navy Blues as they appear to boast slightly better current form There is no doubt many readers, who follow St Kilda CB C will have the distinct impression that I do not recognise their talents Well, hang on boys I think you may just sneak in from Collegians in a tight game The result is going to be very important to both teams Last round losers Geelong and Old Halleyburians also meet in an important round, which either side could win without surprising I'm surely tempted to change my mind, but will stick with my first impression and lean towards Haileybury Close neighbours, Old Scotch and Old Paradians will meet in what should be a most attractive game There is not much between the sides except that the Cardinals appear more consistent, and I look to them to trap the points Whilst Reservoir have been good to me recently, one could hardly but be impressed by Ivanhoe's great winning streak since the second week of the season I must go for Ida's 'Hoes to win a most interesting game SELECTIONS:- Old Melburnians, St Kilda C B C, Old Haileyburians, Old Scotch, Ivanhoe - ALF KEAM C SECTIO N Unfortunately adverse ground conditions robbed us of seeing the two top teams in action at Fawkner - only to find them sharing the points All other games were battled out in fine weather but the "going" was very heavy - let's hope some wind and sunshine clear up the grounds for today's matches Old Xaverians should prove too strong for Kew Hampton Rovers at home to AJAX will keep the local fans on their feet The Rovers look good at home, however AJAX are in good form and should come home strongly Old Carey and Univ High will be a close encounter, but the Old Boys look a shade better and should take the points Melbourne High still struggling to win a game have a slim chance against Old Ivanhoe - still Old I's should be able to use their hame ground advantage to gain the points Parkside play well at home and today's game against Fawkner could be a beauty Although Fawkner could be short of a gallop, I expect them to take the honours My Selections are:- Old Xaverians, AJAX, UH S O B, Old Ivanhoe, Fawkner - ALEX JOHNSON D SECTION Apart from Old Ca mberwell all other teams in the four collected points last Saturday Old Camberwell are in a precarious position with Elsternwick and Power House on the same points but slightly down on percentage What will happen after todays games? Power House at home to Old Brighton will be a hard game ; on paper Old Brighton should win but this game means more to Power House, a chance to get into the four, a chance for the finals I think Power House will win it THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 9, 1977 Page 5

4 Elsternwick also at home to Old Camberwell who have had a bit of a bad run in the last few weeks and I don't think that this game will see them come up Elsternwick should win Alphington should have no troubles in disposing of Old Geelong State Bank have been up and down this year but they should not have any fears from La Trobe Blacks who have certainly seen better years Assumption and St Kevin's - although Assumption have come up over the last few weeks, they don't have the strength to knock off St Kevin's this time SELECTIONS: Power House, Elsternwick, Alphington, State Bank, St Kevin's - KEITH FINDLAY E SECTIO N West Brunswick regained top position last week by upsetting Heatherton (and me) This week, at home, they should be too good for Old Mentonlans Brunswick and National Bank will be a hard struggle on the Dunstan Reserve mud heap Brunswick have to maintain a margin of match points over A M P because of their respective percentages so it is the red and whites for me AM P Society v Beverley Hills should be a sure thing for the Hillites, but AM P must surely realise that it is preferable to stay in E Section then to have to claw a way out of F Section again North Brunswick meet Heatherton (all the "wickers" playing at home this week) Heatherton were not good enough to beat West at home last week and I feel that North will be too tough for them to digest this week SELECTIONS: West Brunswick, North Brunswick, Brunswick, Beverley Hills - SYD WHITFIELD F SECTIO N Last week's results served two purposes They added more interest to the fight for the four, while at the same time they widened the gap between the top six and the bottom four sides All followers of Amateur Football are pleased to see the resurgence of Commonwealth Bank who should continue on their winning way today against University Reds It would be the upset of the season if the Reds get up to take the points The game at the Footscray Insitute oval, where Thornbury will be visitors, should prove interesting The local side has moved to second place while Thornbury with a win today could sneak into the top four Home ground advantage coupled with greater depth of available talent, prompt me to select Footscray Monash Whites make the long journey north to meet Glenroy whose form has not been worthy of note A stronger defence plus the ability to lift form when necessary are two factors leading me to select Monash La Trobe Reds make the long southern journey to Mentone Only to find St Bede's out to erase memories of last week For the statistically minded, it appears La Trobe have half the strength of St Bede's This may be demonstrated today as I believe St Bede's will record another convincing victory The "Battle of Bulleen" resumes today when leaders Bulleen-Templestowe clash with their visitors, Bulleen United The sides play different types of football ; 5 LOOKING BAC K by NOEL R'UNDLE 5 YEARS AGO Upsets were the order of the day when Old Trinity and Ivanhoe joint leaders in `B' Section, were both beaten Old Trinity finshed strongly against Old Scotch but went down by 9 points Anderson, Kefrord, Duffy (Scotch) and Just, Macaw, C Fellows, (Trinity) were best University Blacks, trailing Ivanhoe by 3 points at the last change, kicked 63 to 22 in the last quarter C Cordner, McLean, Moffatt (6 goals) for the Blacks and Robinson, Berry and Hughes (Ivanhoe) starred 'A' Section coaches were John Caspars (Caulfield Gramm ), Alan Salter (Coburg), Ken Purcell (De La Salle), "Jocka" Nelson (M H S O B), Clyde Laidlaw (Monash Blues), Bob Spurling (North Old Boys), Ted Farrell (Ormond), John Booth (Old Paradians), Gus Mitchell (St Bernard's) and Barry Johnston (Univ Blues) The umpires bade farewell and thanks to Joe Jamieson who had looked after them so well at Elsternwick for some years, and had also greatly assisted the Association 200 games to Hampton Rovers veteran Dave Brickie" Fullagar who joined the juniors in the late fifties and had given great service to the club 10 YEARS AGO Collegians stopped Kew's winning ru n of 5 games straight when they led throughout to score by 3 goals The two top teams in `C' Section St Bernard's OC and Alphington were both beaten by 1 point, by O G G's and Monash respectively John Wood played his 250th game for Brunswick (John has since been president of the club) Parkside, undefeated with 11 wins, were 3 games clear of Hampton Rovers and AJAX in `D' Section Old In 'A' Section Old Scotch, Ivanhoe and Xaverians were in the last three positions - yet only a game behind Collegians who were fourth 25 YEARS AGO 'Curley Gemmell played his 150th game for Ivanhoe 'A' Section captains were Phil McLaughlin (Old Paradians), Sam Birtles (Hampton Rovers), F van Mcgregor (Ormond), Harry Meredith kuniv Blacks), Geoff Sinclair (Univ Blues), Pere Adams (Alphington), Jack Thomas (Commonwealth Bank), R Ferguson (Collegians), Peter Cox (Old Melburnians), Who captained Old Scotch in 1952? Old Paradians with only one victory to their credit, went down to joint leaders Old Melburnians by only 5 points, while Commonwealth Bank (4th) continued to be a hoodoo side for the other joint leader, Ormond as they led all day to defeat Ormond 711 to 5 9 Stars for the Bank were Alan Shiel, Miles Hurley and Don Malcolm Congratulations to St Kilda C B C wingman Chris Meehan on notching up 50 games last week A rover in the premiership side two years ago, Chris has now firmly established himself as a wingman and is having his best year so far If he continues his great form, he will have no problems in playing many more games for the Saints Old Trinity congratulate Ric Murphy on reaching his 50th game for the club last week Since joining in 1974 from the school, Ric has served an apprenticeship in the seconds and is nowadays a regular firsts player In his first year his efforts won him an encouragement award from the club, and in 1975 he played in the A Reserve Final Series He has played nearly all his football on the backline and has repulsed many an opposition attack with his strong marking and determined play CLUB SECRETARIES! Match abandoned CENTURY TO CAULFIELD MAN Most clubs usually possess a footballer who can be referred to as "one of the best players who has played for the club" and it is a safe bet that most Caulfield Grammarians would without hesitation agree that Tony Lester qualifies in this respect Tony played his 100th game last Saturday and after the match back at the clubhouse went through the ritual reserved for such auspicious occasions A natural ball getter he plays mostly as a ruck rover or in the centre but he is likely to bob up anywhere in quest of a kick Few players of his rather spare frame possess the courage and tenacity he displays each week and his strong marking against bigger players together with his ability to come out of the packs with the ball and deliver it accurately to a team member with his left foot not only puts him in the category of one of the best players ever to have worn the clubs colours but also won for him the title of Best and Fairest last season, whilst this season he was Vice Captain of the VA FA team against Tasmania THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - Perhaps I'd better re-asses COBURG - they may blast their way through the vital games ahead and hang on in the section I have a strong feeling Coburg WILL NOT be relegated Ormond are coming along nicely and will settle any rough chance University Blacks may consider they have for - a place in the finals Tony Von Mager is on target and last week collected 7 goals to give him 11 in two weeks The accuracy of tho Blacks forwards certainly off-set the Caul field minor scores But 'Blacks will need more th an straight kicking to toss Ormond Marcel lin, down in recent weeks, will pop back among the winners today After beating Old Trinity But a warning - Trinity are improving so don't treat them lightly or they will sneak their first four match points St Bernard's are looking more like the side of old and while it would seem this match may be a"cliff-hanger", I will be surprised if St Be rnard's surrender Caulfield the points Those names are still bobbing up among Caul field's best - a fine bunch of in-form veterans - but perhaps Tony Lester, Barry Morphet, Jon Long, John Griffiths and company need a little more support from some of their less experienced team-mates It's a funny season but St Bernard's will just make it, North Old Boys draw closer each week to dropping a game - but their all round ability still gleams I don't expect them to lower their colours this round - Uni Blues are well short of their mark De La Salle, on perform ances the likely September "runner-up", will continue their fairly safe hold on the "double ch ance" by exploiting the team-building problems of an improving Coburg SELECTIONS : Ormond, North Old Boys, Marcellin, St Be rnard's, De La Salle - JIM FIDGE B SECTION My opinion of the relative team strengths appears to change weekly as this crazy competition, In which it appears that anyone can beat anyone, moves towards its climax Some teams obviously have no regard for their tipster's sensitivities! Despite their thumping win last week, whereby they climbed from the bottom Geelong are not yet out of trouble as they must face up to Old Melburnians, who slipped again with the aid of poor goal kicking I must give the Navy Blues their very last chance to redeem themselves Recent form of Monash Blues and St Kilda CBC has been good and they meet in a very vital clash For the winner, final four chances stay alive, though dim, and I feel that Monash will continue their winning way Surely the keystone of the round is the Old Scotch and Reservoir match The boys from Reservoir obviously enjoy their spot in the four as they overcame a big obstacle last week to stay in Badly needing some winners at this late stage, I'm taking a desparate throw and going for Reservoir, as Scotch appeared to fall in due to some really atrocious kicking last week by their opponents Now firmly entrenched in the hot seat, Old Haileyburlans have a very tough nut to crack in Old Paradians, who will be desperate to atone for letting the big one slip last week I cannot see them repeating their mistake, and call them as the likely winners Whoever said "One month a rooster, the next a feather duster", must have had Collegians in mind as they have drifted into a dangerous situation Although they convincingly beat Ivanhoe the first time around, times have really changed I could not possibly suggest that the Magpies, challenging for the lead will drop this one SELECTIONS: Old Melbu rn ians, Monash Blues, Reservoir O B, Old Paradians, Ivanhoe - ALF KEAM C SECTION Tipsters are always sitting ducks to be "dudded", but I think it often gives the underdog incentive and great satisfaction in notching up a win - last Saturday was no exception Hampton Rovers showed their supremacy against AJAX - a great effort Rovers and now you certainly set the leaders a poser with only two points between the first five Old Carey also showed improvement and their 4 points helped them up the ladder Today they travel to Kew, who incidentally gave Xav's a good run for their money Form plus home ground advantage - I expect Kew to chalk up a win To keep their final four hopes alive, Parkside have their backs against the wall facing an away game, but they shouud be good enough to win from Old Ivanhoe The battle of the High Schools should prove an interesting game Melbourne are trying their hearts out to win however I think they will be up against it again today with University Top team Fawkner won't have it all their own way with Hampton Rovers in fine form At siren time Fawgner will - know they have had a hard game but should take the honours AJAX meet Old Xaverians at Elsternwick Park which will be a good one Xavs will be out to pick up four jettisoned points This will be an interesting game with Xavs finishing on top My Selections are :- Kew, Old Xaverians, Parkside, U H S O B, Fawkner - ALEX JOHNSON THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - July 16, 1977 Page 5
