Forest Lake State High School Rugby League Program Welcome to the Forest Lake State High School (FLSHS) Rugby League Program for 2015! To our students Congratulations on choosing to play for Forest Lake SHS in 2015! Your season will be successful if you are enthusiastic and disciplined at school, at training and during the games, supporting your team-mates, especially in tight situations and aim to always produce your best effort. Winning and losing will not be the measures of success. Your emphasis should be on improving individual skills in Rugby League and life in general, and developing teamwork and friendships that ensure your sport is enjoyable. To our parents and guardians I would like to encourage parents to support your son s sporting interest as time allows. Come along to the games; ask about his individual and team performances both on and off the field; and support the coach. Your involvement throughout the season is essential and will always be greatly appreciated. The 2015 FLSHS Rugby League Program booklet serves to provide details about the program, training requirements, competition draws for the season, travel directions to away venues, competition rules and regulations for each sport, and also offers advice to students on footwear, game day preparation, nutrition and hydration. It has been designed for you and your child to read together and to keep at home. COMMON ELEMENTS FOR A FUN AND SUCCESSFUL SEASON Fun and successful teams tend to have a few common elements involved in their success: 1. Enthusiasm from the students to learn and improve in all areas of their schooling. 2. Commitment from the coach and team to attend regular training sessions and every game. 3. Team spirit that is reflective in Forest Lake High School s sporting teams. 4. Parental support that allows students to attend training and games outside school hours, and participate in something that they are interested in and are very skilful at. It is easy for the coaches of our Forest Lake SHS teams to achieve these results when we are able to work with students that display the above elements throughout each season. Our job of training and preparing teams only requires that the students are committed to achieving the goals that both the coach and the team set for the season. The rest is then made easy! Our sporting success continues to grow with each New Year and the establishment of specific sporting programs within the school curriculum will allow us to fulfil our seemingly limitless potential. Sport at Forest Lake SHS is in a new and exciting stage and has the potential to achieve great results and we look forward to your participation in this rapidly growing and successful concept. We look forward to seeing you throughout the season!

Rugby League Program Fee Costing and Expectations The cost for each student to participate in the FLSHS Rugby League Program for each year will range between $50and $100, depending upon which competitions the team qualifies for. Years 7, 8, 9 are $50 and years 10, 11, 12 are $100. This cost includes the provision of transport, referees, first aid, strapping tape and a training shirt Students and parents are strongly encouraged to have school text and resources fees paid up to date at the beginning of the school year, or commencement of each term. Payments for extracurricular sporting activities, such as rugby league, will not be accepted at the main office if all other school fees are not up to date. Forest Lake State High School has undertaken the task of organising business partnerships and sponsors with different organisations to reduce this cost to you at home. Unfortunately, there are some items we cannot avoid. We are always severely constrained with time due to the early start of the Rugby League competition and we apologise for the late distribution of information. However, we do believe our season will be a successful one and we strongly encourage your support and involvement. If any students have any concerns regarding this cost and payment procedures they should speak to Mr Cameron Webb as soon as possible. Travel Costs & Information When students are involved in AWAY matches that require our teams to travel, a bus will be provided under staff supervision to transport the students to and from the particular venue. Each parent/caregiver is required to give permission for their child to travel to games. Students must return their permission to travel form before they are allowed to travel on the team bus. Students are not permitted to independently travel to game venues. They must travel to the venue on the school bus as a team. If prior notification is given to the coach that they are to be picked up from the venue, students can travel home with the nominated carer. All students are required to travel to each venue with the team on the school bus. At the completion of the game the school bus will be returning back to school however, students may return home privately with a family member if arranged with the coach. Students will not be permitted to travel home from games with other students with licences. Uniforms All students competing for Forest Lake SHS will be provided with their playing jersey prior to games by their coach/manager and will be required to return the uniform to their coach/manager at the conclusion of each game. The school is responsible for the maintenance of each team s set of uniforms throughout the season. All Rugby League students will be required to compete in the schools rugby league uniform at all times. Jerseys and shorts are provided by the school however socks will need to be purchased from the uniform shop for a cost of $10. Students will not be allowed to play unless they have correct uniform.

Extra protective gear e.g. headgear and mouthguards is encouraged though not compulsory. Footwear All Rugby League players will be expected to compete in footwear that provides support and stability on grass surfaces, and that are suitable for competing in Rugby League. The GOAL is: Nutrition & Hydration To have an empty stomach and gastrointestinal tract, but enough fuel for the muscles and enough food to prevent hunger. To have a settled stomach and a confident athlete. To be a well hydrated, comfortable athlete. Why? So that the blood will flow through the working muscles, and not the digestive organs. Because muscles rely primarily on fuel stored from meals eaten in the days before the competition. Food eaten on the day of the game fuels the brain and keeps the muscles topped up when the competition is long or intermittent. So that pre-competition nerves don t upset the stomach. The Night before THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL The night before the game, every player should eat a carbohydrate- rich dinner. Spaghetti is a popular choice, but any meal based on rice, potatoes, breads, noodles, vegetables, and fruit will do the job. These carbohydrate-rich foods are stored in the muscles as muscle glycogen and provide the energy you need for endurance. Be careful, though. Sometimes, athletes think they are "carbo-loading" when they actually are "fatloading". For example, one soccer player raved about his pre-game pepperoni pizza with double cheese; another named lasagne as his favourite pre-game dinner. Both choices offer more fat and protein than carbohydrates. The fat fills the stomach, but leaves the muscles poorly fuelled. Breakfast on the day You should eat breakfast on the morning of the game. Breakfast helps maintain a normal blood sugar; this enhances energy, feeds the brain, and helps the athlete stay focused. You should not eat too much -- or too little -- of "tried-and-true" carbohydrate-based foods that settle well. Running Late? Players, who sleep until the last minute, roll out of bed, jump into the car, and arrive at the game without fuel or water will put themselves at a disadvantage. The best-fuelled team has the best chances of winning. "No time" is no excuse!!! Snacking before the game 1 Hour before the game: High carbohydrate, Low fat, Low fibre, primarily liquid nil protein e.g. WATER and a banana or a plain muffin and fruit juice 2 Hours before the game: High carbohydrate, Low fat, low protein e.g. cereal, banana and water or toast and jam 3 Hours before the game: High carbohydrate, low fat, moderate protein e.g. Sandwich with any of these: Lean meat, fish poultry or egg, OR Palm size serving of lean meat (not fried), 1 medium potato or rice or pasta, fruit and water OR Large bowl of cereal, fruit yogurt, toast, fruit

After the Game After the game, you need to refuel your muscles and start the preparation for the next practice or game. Muscles are most receptive to refuelling within the first 30 minutes to two hours after the game. So, for rapid recovery, muscles need to be offered carbohydrate-rich foods and fluids as soon as you are hungry. Proper refuelling is particularly important if you are playing a second game that day. Hydration THIRST IS A POOR INDICATOR OF FLUID NEED HYDRATE BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER PLAY Extra morning fluids, such as water and juice, are important to help you start off adequately hydrated. The body needs about 45 to 90 minutes to process liquids, so therefore the extra fluids should be consumed early enough in order to be passed by game time. Consuming fluids at any time are better than no fluids at all. For example, sipping juice in the car on the way to the game is better than drinking nothing.

Forest Lake State High School CODE OF CONDUCT The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to provide an enjoyable and safe sporting environment. We want our students to develop as a player, gaining personal fulfilment and satisfaction through friendly competition. This booklet has been designed for you and your child to read and to keep as an at home reference. School Rules It is very important that all rules are followed when you are on school property or wearing FLSHS uniform. These rules are not only part of our school policy, but legislation by the Queensland Government for property owned and facilitated by government departments i.e. Education Queensland. No smoking No alcohol No animals PRIDE at Forest Lake State High School CODE OF BEHAVIOUR PLAYERS Students involved in the 2015 FLSHS Rugby League program must adhere to all expectations set by the school wide behaviour policy, PRIDE. PRIDE is defined at FLSHS as Prepared, Respected, Included, Dedicated and Education. This acronym is particularly relevant in this subject. The objective for all FLSHS students is to be educated. Educational outcomes will always take priority over any sporting activities. If a rugby league student is not meeting the education and behavioural standards of the program they will be asked to leave and no refund will be provided. Students are required to perform all of the above expectations in all environments being in school and/or outside. Failure to comply with the FLSHS behaviour policy may result in the student being removed from the class. This will obviously have ramifications on the rest of the players/team as fees, playing structure and positions will have to change. 1. All players must ensure that they are disciplined in all areas of school life. Students who fail to do this will not take part in any aspect of the Rugby League program. Students cannot prioritize rugby league over other aspects of school. Students must attend all days of the schooling week. If they are absent, an explanation must be provided by the guardian at home. 2. All educational reports will be monitored in all subjects by the relevant coach. If a student has less than a C in behavior and effort they will be issued with a letter 1. Refer below. Failure to comply with the expectations of this letter may result in the student being asked to leave the program.

3. All players should play by the rules, carry out all training programs and attend all training sessions as set down by the coach. Players must train in the full training uniform (singlet, playing shorts and boots). 4. Players are to notify the Coach/Manager of any occasion they may be unable to attend a training session, prior to training sessions commencing. A medical certificate may be required. 5. Never argue with an official. Respect the Referee s decision. If you disagree, have the Captain, approach the official during a break in play. 6. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials, the use of foul language and sledging other participants, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent are not acceptable or permitted behaviours. 7. Work equally hard for yourself and/or your team. Your team s performance will benefit from your hard work and so will you. 8. Be a good sport. Applaud all good performances whether they are made by your team or the opposition. 9. Treat all participants in Rugby League as you like to be treated. Do not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor. 10. Cooperate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition. 11. Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches. 12. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants, regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion. 13. Shake hands with and thank the opposition players and officials after the match: win, lose or draw. Breaches of this code of conduct or any other poor behaviour may result in: Receive a Forest Lake SHS Rugby League Program Letter 1 or Letter 2 Removal from the Forest Lake SHS Rugby League Program Disciplionary action as per the FLSHS SWPBS for Students Breaches of this code of conduct in relation to on-field incidents may result in: Receive a Forest Lake SHS Rugby League Program Letter 1 or Letter 2 Removal from the Forest Lake SHS Rugby League Program Removal from the field by the Coach Sin Binning Being Sent off Face the Judiciary and Suspension Disciplionary action as per the FLSHS Responsible Behaviour Plan for students

Roles of Parents and Behaviour Code The role of parents in the Rugby League Program is to: Support and encourage their child/children to participate in Rugby League. Allow their child to participate only if they are feeling well and healthy. Encourage their child to participate for the enjoyment of Rugby League. Support their child to develop social and physical skills through Rugby League. Promote and abide by the School of Excellence Rugby League Program codes of behaviour. Be courteous when communicating with coaches, umpires and administrators. Be a positive role model. CODE OF BEHAVIOUR PARENTS Children learn best by example. If our parents and supporters behave in an appropriate manner, our students will have good role models to learn from. 1. Remember, children participate in Rugby League for their enjoyment not yours. One of the most important parts of playing Rugby League is for your child s development, both in character and physically. 2. Encourage children to participate, do not force them. 3. Focus on the child s efforts and performance, rather than winning or losing. 4. Encourage children to always participate according to the rules. 5. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. Never let match disappointment cause loss of control 6. Whilst at games we urge you to positively cheer on your son and our teams, acknowledge good play from both sides. Comments should only be supportive and encouraging. 7. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from Rugby League. Remember that comments and behaviour from the sideline can lead to field violence. 8. Show appreciation of volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Without them your child could not participate. 9. Respect umpires decisions at all times and teach children to do likewise. 10. The consumption of alcohol outside of licensed areas and smoking at the schools is inappropriate at all Rugby League games.

In relation to the coaching staff: The team has set patterns to play, depending on which part of the field the play is in. Do not instruct players from the sideline. It is confusing for the players. As Coach/Manager, we don t ask players/parents where they think the player should play. We will play players where and when we feel they will best benefit the team. Please respect our decisions. We will attempt to play all players throughout games. Please remember your child is now playing high school football and players may not be given equal time on the field, because of the position they play or the jobs they have to do. It is expected that once the players enter the change rooms, parents leave the players in the hands of the Coaching team. The team environment is important for morale both before and after a match. If there are any issues or complaints, they are to be directed to the HOD HPE/Sport

Sporting Excellence Programs 2015 Behavior Management Process Forest Lake High School Rugby League Program students are firstly and foremost students of Forest Lake State High School and will be managed in the same way as any other student within our school with regard to the Behaviour Management Policy. Goals and Objectives for 2014: In addition to providing sporting opportunities for our students, our aim is to promote the importance of attitude and discipline. It is these two things that we believe are the prerequisites for sporting and general day to day successes. In 2015, we are committed to further developing this approach to Behaviour Management. In 2015, students and staff from Forest Lake State High School Rugby League Program will be aiming to: A. Be Consistent in everything we do B. Be Positive at all times C. Be Respectful in our everyday actions. PRIDE in Rugby League Forest Lake State High School Rugby League Program students will be required to meet the expectations of the school wide behavior policy, PRIDE. Rugby League Program Process The rugby league program will be managed in the following ways: 1. The rugby league coordinator will monitor and review the Behaviour Management Data Base at least once per term or on a needs basis. 2. Once a Rugby League student has been suspended from Forest Lake State High School, or they are simply displaying unsatisfactory behaviour, they will be issued with a Letter 1, warning themselves and their parent/caregivers that their place in the program will be under review. This letter will be initiated and managed by the coordinator. If a student is currently serving a suspension they will not be permitted to participate in any games until the suspension is completed. 3. If students are suspended for a second time, or they are still displaying unsatisfactory behaviour in the same year, they will be issued with a Level 2 Letter. This will explain their removal from the team. This will be monitored by the HOD HPE/SPORT. The student may only reapply for their position back in the program if they: a) Complete an agreed satisfactory Behaviour Contract. The length of this contract will be determined by the HOD Students who are removed from the program will need to immediately negotiate a change of subject and may not be rated in either the Excellence Program and/or the new subject depending upon the time in the semester and the amount of assessment completed. Letter 1 will be initiated by the HOD, but Letter 2 must be jointly negotiated with the HOD and Principal.
