Allington Castle Archers Nocking Point September 2016 Dates for your diary Sunday 11th September MKL Home v HVB 10:30 for 11:00 Sighters All archers welcome. The last chance to get in the team for 2016 Clive is standing in for me, and Sue, so be kind to them Sunday 25th September Captains Challenge 10:00 for 10:30 sighters National rounds Last Internal event of the outdoor season -1-
CHAIRMAN S CORNER The family day was an outstanding success this year with a big turnout (thank you weather!) and thanks to Kathy and Hazel for doing much of the prep. It did however expose our club barbeque equipment to some awkward questions and the Committee has decided to retire it and get one more suitable, together with a third gas bottle. Well done to Geoff and his MKL team who are still on the roll with another double win, this time at Darenthford. We have another round foam target on order and a replacement centre for our existing one. Our first foam target (the big square Danage ) has been sold. Although this was a very good archery target, it was difficult to store and manage. Mainly for the benefit of newer Members, incident report sheets can be found in the aluminium first aid kit in the hut. Please find and fill out a form for injuries sustained at the field and pass/send it to the Club Secretary, Dominic Reynolds, for formal recording in the incident book. Many thanks to Warwick and his string making demo. Relaxed and informative. A big thank you to Michael Clark and his support staff that made the White Friars open tournament happen again for A lot of hard work involved and a good indicator to the size of the heart in this Club. Carlos Bolou came 2 nd recurve York and both Carla and Alex Bolou came 1 st in their respective Bristol classes. Carlos will shortly shoot for the county. Malcolm Evans and Jose Bolou escaped the medals but both did well in the compound York (Malcolm - 6 gold end at 100yds). Alex above is in the sort of form that sees her knocking on the door of UK records for her age and both Alex and Carla are in Junior MB territory. Ian Sharp, Chairman ********************** Secretary s Sidelines Congratulations to Sandra on passing her Level 1 coaching. Members Affiliation Fees THANK YOU to all that made the payments of affiliation fees. Those of you that have had s from me about the ACA affiliations please let me know when you have paid. Archer KAA SCAS total y GB Senior Disabled Junior SHOOTING STARS Well done to our club members at the KAA Championships on the 21 st August
Notes relating to fees above. The KAA Committee in July 16 have, for this year, set the cost of junior fees and young adult fees at 3, and disabled fees at zero SCAS are not changing their fees. The En-Bloc Club for Juniors Affiliation has ceased, therefore the rates noted above will apply. If you plan to be making payment at the Young Adult rate (18 to 24 years old), please provide your date of birth to the Secretary. Age is as at 1 st October 2016 for the calculations. If you plan to be making payment at the Disabled rate please let the Secretary know. Junior U16 Compound Alex Bolou Clive Jeffery Gents Compound Ian Wilson Bare Bow What a month August was, weather acceptable, and the archery exceptional. Leaves Green team shoot ACA took the compound and the longbow, also the top scores in ladies and gents longbow and compound. A great day out and then we cleared the raffle prizes as well. We may be banned next year. That would be a pity as it would be nice to have a full set of all disciplines next year. Compound, Recurve, Barebow and Longbow. See photo below. Assistance to the Club Events Thank you very much to all who have helped at our events so far in this year. There are more opportunities available. AGM Nominations Please note that the nominations for the Committee roles are due to be in to the Secretary by the 25 th of October Dom Captain s Corner Just to congratulate our Club champions for Carlos Bolou Gents Recurve Wendy Bolou Ladies Recurve Junior U18 Recurve Carla Bolou Your team at the Ind Coope team shoot. Mid Kent League August v Darenthford Another great day out, perfect weather, sunny, with just enough cloud cover and a slight breeze. An eventful day as one of their archers tried to open his veins with his string on the first end. That was Darenthford down by two as it was a Hospital job unfortunately
In the shooting Mike White had the shot of the day see below. Flag and stick. The results were good to say the least as we won both pure score and handicap. It does help if an archer shoots a County record. Well done Alex Bolou a Short Windsor 108 hits 944 score and 93 golds. Full results later on the website. Whitefriars Open Tournament Sunday 28 th Went very well, just the right number of helpers on all days. Fairly good weather made it much better than the STW for the archers. Better ground as KH had mowed the grass closer. Judges were happy, archers and TO happy. Computer scoring better but needs a few tweks. ACA Members venture out to Clouts, Surrey and Essex Saturday and Sunday 20 th & 21 st. August, Sue Williams, Ian Wilson & I. The Surrey clout Very bad weather was forecast for the day, but we set off anyway. At a very small primary school we found a large open sports field surrounded on all sides by trees. With the very strong wind coming over our right shoulder we attempted to hit the clout. Luckily a one way clout, shooting into that gale would have been difficult. For those that have never been to a clout shoot, the flags are set at 180 yds for gent, 140 yds for ladies. The elevation for recurves is higher than your standard sight would allow you to shoot, for longbows a very high elevation is allowed and required to reach 180yds. Having shot 6 arrows you go up to the flag to see how near you are. To score a tape with the standard colours in the order from the flag, gold, red, blue, black and white. The scores are , the inner gold is only 3 feet in diameter. From this you will understand that scores for a imperial clout are very low, blanked a few ends, score some others. 3 dozen in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Managed a score of 31 with zero golds. On to the next. The Essex clout Sunday was a much better day for weather. Off to North West greater London, Woodford Archers. A very large field in a much urbanised area. This was a metric clout, basically the same but the scoring circles are in metres, same scores/colour and the same number of arrows. This time a reasonable score of hits and 4 clouts(gold s) a great day out meeting a few old faces, Alf Kershaw, Philip Faithful, and some Crown archers. Tassel awards for clout shooting are the equivalent of Rose awards in a York/Hereford. Sue and I managed one for each clout. My white for the surrey and - 4 -
black for the Essex. Sue got the Red for the Essex. Well done Sue. Kent Championships Vigo on the 21 st August. Clashed with the clout shoots so someone else can comment on this. Field shoot Sunday, 18 th September KAF-5 10:00 assemble and 10:30 start. An invitation to all members who have considered field shooting in the past now is your chance. Kent Archery Field are holding a shoot on Sunday 18 th Sept at Gorewood near Sittingbourne ME9 7RJ, shoot number KAF-5. The invitation is for any archer who wants to have a look at a field shoot FOR FREE, what s the course like, basic rules of shooting, scoring, types of target faces and types of rounds. It is proposed for one newcomer to be attached to a group who are shooting, and to go on the round, the experienced field shooters giving a running commentary of what is happening, and answering questions. You can shoot or not as you wish. Come along and see what is about, and why we have so much fun shooting. For more details see Geoff Barker, Ian Wilson or Sue Williams. Next month s events SCAS Intercounties WA 1440 match Oxford 10 th Saturday September. Carlos and I have been lucky enough to be invited to shoot for Kent at inter-counties at Oxford. Kent County Clout shoot Ramsgate 11 th September. Captains Challenge 25 th Sept. Kent Field Championships 9 th October. Geoff B Coaching Tips Continued This month we will add details to some items on the list I gave you last week 2. If you have trouble with the arrow coming off the rest, this is because when you curl your fingers round the string you are rotating the string and if the arrow nock is slightly tight, it rotates with the string pulling the arrow off the rest. To prevent this, start with an open hand and press the base of your fingers on the string and move your hand back until the string gets to the correct position rotating the string clockwise. Now when you curl your fingers the string can rotate anti-clockwise back to its original position. Next, keep your fingers firmly on the string and start pulling back, the end pads on your fingers bunch, holding it without you having to curl your fingers too much. Not only does this prevent the arrow coming off the rest but also gives you a cleaner release by reducing the amount of plucking which causes sideways movement of the string. 4 Before raising the bow the wrist should be straight so you are pulling in a straight line and there is a minimum amount of muscle use, and energy is conserved (it s easier). Your fingers on the string are holding the bow so the bow hand is open and not gripping the bow; now the bow hand can move into the correct position on the handle with contact along the palm from - 5 -
base of first finger along base of thumb pad. I believe that the handle should be smooth so that if everything else is correct the bow hand can slide into its correct position. Discussion welcome in next month s Nocking point or on the field. Colin Bowen ********************* Record Officers Report We have had two new Bowmen join the Club's elite ; first Mike Clark achieved it with his Longbow, joining Geoff and Sue as our Longbow Bowmen. Then our esteemed Chairman Ian Sharp achieved his long held ambition and shot his third Bowman score of the year to join Carlos, Stuart and Colin with the recurve bow. We now have four compound (Clive, Ken, Dave, and Deryck), three longbow and four recurve archers at that level. At the recent Club's Whitefriars tournament the Bolou clan represented the Club well, with both Carla and Alex scoring Junior Master Bowmen rounds. Carla shot 1110 in the Bristol with her recurve and Alex 1288 in the Bristol 3 in compound. Yes, 1288 with 140 gold s out of 144 arrows that is only 8 points off of the maximum possible score and only four less than the GB record. Not to be outdone by the younger members of the family (well in all honesty they were outdone) Carlos made Bowman in the York, with both Wendy and Jose 1 st class in their rounds. Coaching Group Workshop On Saturday 20th August a string making workshop was carried out. Ten members turned out on a blustery morning to take part in the workshop. The workshop focused on the making of a Recurve bow string. During the workshop a string was made as a demonstration for a bow that was donated to Ian Sharp. My thanks goes to all who came along, especially Sandra for her help and Ian Sharp for providing the bow for making the string for. The Club has a spool of Fast Flight Plus available for members to have a go and make their own strings (perhaps for a small donation to the club). Assistance can be given for anyone who wants to have a go just ask a coach for assistance. Warwick at the string making jig. Colin Symonds ************************** - 6 -
