Friday 14 th October 2016 Dear parents, families and friends of Yarrells, Make a Difference Day Our school ethos promotes the value of caring for others. It has been very obvious this week, as I have gone around the school, that this idea is alive and well at Yarrells. I have seen buddy letters being delivered between older and younger pupils including birthday cards, party invites and thank you cards. In Mrs Cunningham s assembly at the beginning of the week she talked about the importance of making a difference and invited all of us, teachers and pupils alike, to make a difference to someone else at least once every day. This same message was re-enforced in the pre-prep assembly with Mrs Chappell. Later in the week I was pleased to present all the generous gifts of food donated by our parents and families as part of our Harvest celebrations to Poole Food Bank. I was accompanied by our Year 8 who learnt about how only the registered recipients were able to access the food bank and that how our donation and those of other organisations at this time of year helped keep very poor individuals and families who live in our local community from suffering. The amount donated at this time of the year amounts to some 60% of all donations for the year and they were very grateful for our help. Tournament and Sporting Successes! For me the most successful part of the tournaments we hosted this week was the wonderful spirit in which they were played. All the teams were competitive but in a positive way and it was lovely to see our children congratulating the opposition when they played well and neither boastful nor arrogant when we won. All the visiting teams came to thank me for the tangible positive atmosphere that their pupils and parents enjoyed about coming to Yarrells. The results were also very good. Congratulations to all of the children who played and to Mr Schneider for organising them. Meanwhile the girls were also on form with the Year 2 s having their first ever hockey match for Yarrells; although it was training only, the enthusiasm to play and represent their school was great to hear. The older girls also acquitted themselves very positively in their hockey fixtures during the week. Parent Staff Conferences This week we kicked off our first round of Parent Staff Conferences for Years 5 8 who had the chance to meet form tutors and core subject teachers to discuss how things have gone in the first few weeks and planning ahead for the future. It was my chance to talk to many parents about potential future schools as I like to work with parents to match their child to the many possible options available locally and further afield. In this Year 8 we have a number already aiming at a range of schools including Canford, Bryanston, Clayesmore, Milton Abbey, Ballard, Corfe Hills, QE Wimborne and Lytchett Minster. We hope to provide, with our accelerated Key Stage 3/Common Entrance syllabus (they are essentially prepared for Year 9 exams by the end of Year 8), a genuine choice of senior school options. This programme will give our students the choice of aiming at top sets in local state schools or the best on offer in local independent schools. This begins after the grammar school tests in September of Year 6 which means that those leaving us for the grammar school are already benefitting from this accelerated programme.

All Things Mathematical It has been very interesting for me as I visit all the classrooms around the school to see the enthusiasm and positive attitude to maths across all the ages throughout the school. This has not always been the case in many other schools I have run or worked in over the years. The strong problem solving approach which takes real life issues and uses maths to solve them is very evident and is very genuinely making a real difference to our young people s learning. Mr Small took a team of Year 5 mathematicians to Ballard School this week for a maths challenge day where the children performed very well while at the end of the week the school went off timetable and we all took part in offering exciting maths related projects and topics to mixed age groups of pupils. I particularly enjoyed working with children from Year 3 to 8 on understanding how much they need to earn in order to run their ideal car, buy their ideal home, how much it costs to have children and live the lifestyle of their choice! I hope that this will be an interesting lesson in how much things really cost and as a chance to reflect on how you can enjoy your life without necessarily having all the material trappings that advertisers would make us believe we need. Leeson House Next week we will see our Year 5 pupils go on a three-day field trip to Leeson House in Langton Matravers, near Swanage. Mr Schneider arranges this popular trip annually and it makes wonderful memories for our pupils, you can often read about it in the end of year school yearbook when pupils talk about their favourite memories of being at Yarrells School. The children will arrive at school on Monday as a war evacuee as part of the World War 2 day. The children will then travel to Leeson House from Norden on a steam train. The trip will include a village trail, an orienteering course, stone carving, night orienteering, geology workshop, compass skills and team building activities. We hope that they have a wonderful time and we look forward to hearing all their stories when they return next week. I wish you all a very exciting and peaceful weekend. Well done everybody. We also congratulate the following children for recent achievements: Polly Ghandour, Jayden Coombes, Benjamin Merrell, Isla McPhail Tristart Awards; Katelyn Stevenson Stage 5 Swimming award; Ayden Dirks The Big Friendly Read certificate; Matilda Raynor Level 2 Freestyle Ice Skating award and Daisy Day Youth Sailing Scheme award. News from Kindergarten & Pips Mrs Wilkinson & Mrs Huish Kindergarten and Pips have had an exciting week with a visit from a parent, Mrs Pereira, who brought along her dental equipment to show us. We took turns to make a tooth from play dough and then filled a cavity using a special tool. We learnt about the good foods we need for healthy teeth and how long we should clean them! Everyone was given a new toothbrush and a sticker. Thank you Mrs Pereira for coming to talk to us. The children also enjoyed lots of fun maths activities and brought in items for the sound of the week 't'. Transition News Mrs D Hayes & Miss Z Salter In Transition this week the children have had fun outside in the lovely Greenwood playground, they enjoyed dressing up inventing fantastic role play scenarios. We all enjoyed delicious tea cakes that linked to our sound of the week 't'. The children enjoyed colouring numbers and shapes and then glued them on to a hat to wear today to celebrate World Maths Day. Well done boys and girls we have had lots of fun in Transition this week.

Reception News Mrs B Chappell & Mrs J Williams Reception were thrilled on Tuesday when PCSO Jim Davies and PCSO Kirsty Foster arrived with their marked car. This week the children have been learning how the police help us. Many of the children just thought the police captured bad people so it was important for them to hear about the wide varied role that our police force play in society. The message that we can trust the police to help us came through loud and clear. As did the siren which made the children squeal with delight. It's a memory we hope the children won t forget. We have also been busy this week playing tennis. We are so fortunate at Yarrells to have an excellent relationship with Virgin Active and Reception love having a weekly lesson with Brett our tennis coach. Time spent on the tennis court at such a young age makes for great tennis players. A love for tennis begins to develop very quickly with the right teaching. We are really grateful for your patience Coach Brett, you make tennis so much fun! Year 3 Design Technology Mrs K Moyes & Mrs L Ing In Design Technology this term, Year 3 have been designing their own healthy sandwich snack. It has been a super unit of work and the children have been enthused from the outset. Having learned about food groups and nutrition in Science, we began by sampling different types of bread and a variety of shop bought sandwiches before researching different ideas and designing our own. Our cross curricular English this week has been writing a set of instructions to make the sandwich and the children were so excited when the big moment arrived when they finally got to make and taste the end product. Each child invited two friends to taste their sandwich and give feedback. Their creations were fantastic with many being extremely ambitious and innovative. The children demonstrated great independence as they chopped, mixed, grated and spread. Designs included a piano, dinosaur head, union jack, car and many more besides! Well done to all.

Well done to the Yarrells team for taking part in the Ferndown Try a Tri last weekend. The results are as follows: Under 8 Boys 1 st Jayden Coombes, 4 th Oliver Crowe and 7 th Benjamin Merrell Under 8 Girls 7 th Polly Ghandour & 8 th Marnie Dodd Age 9 10 Boys 3 rd Albert Johnson Age 9 10 Girls 1 st Isla McPhail, 2 nd Nancy Taylor, 5 th Elizabeth Dawson, 7 th Grace Crowe & 10 th Lola Rowland Age nd Fergus Taylor Year 3/4 Yarrells Football Tournament Monday 10 th October 2016 Jayden Coombes (A Team Captain) reports We faced St Thomas Garnet in our 1 st game in the tournament, we were ready and played really well as a team and as a result we won the game quite comfortably 5-1 to us. In the 2 nd game we played against Park school who were a very strong team but we played the way that we usually played and this was enough to see us win 2-1. In the 3 rd game we played Buckholme Towers who were really organised but we managed to score 3 goals and our defence played really well and let nothing past them so we won the game 3-0. As a result we were heading to the Final against St Thomas Garnet. We were ready and hoped the result will be quite as comfortable as our first game. We scored first as we were passing very well. Sadly after

half time St Thomas Garnet equalised and put the score to 1-1. We were quite disappointed but we were determined and tried to pass the ball and go forward faster. We scored in the last second of the game; we were relieved and very happy that we won our tournament. I would like to thank Mr. Schneider for organising and managing our team. Joshua Oxley (B Team Captain) reports An excited Yarrells White B team kicked off on the right foot, by winning 1-0 against Yarrells Green. The next match was against Park School, and although we had lots of chances, the end score was 0-0. Great entertainment however in this match from Mr Lewis having to vault the pond fence two times to get the wet match ball back! The last group match was against Yarrells Red and we skilfully worked as team to pull off a good 2-0 win. In the final, Yarrells faced Park School. It was a very tough match and again we had loads of chances. After an own goal by Park, it was 1-0 but they came back with a goal. By good passing in the team, Ted scored a fabulous goal, to bring home the win for Yarrells. Well done, Yarrells Whites! Year 3 Girls Hockey v Year 4 Park at Yarrells School Monday 10th October Mr Williams reports... Monday saw the first opportunity for the Year 3 girls to show what they have been working on during hockey lessons at school with myself, Miss Alford, Miss Tilley and Mrs Hine. Today the matches were very close. In the A Team match Yarrells put Park under sustained pressure throughout the match and really thought carefully about their shape when defending and attacking. The A team managed to score twice with two very well worked team goals with five of Yarrells seven players involved at some point, resulting in Lottie Vavasour scoring to put Yarrells into the lead. Park equalised just after half time from close range, however, because of some good saves by Saffie Chewins and resolute defending by Aimee Kelly, Aanya Jaswal and Evalyn Hunt, Park would not be able to add to their solitary goal. The girls kept putting on the pressure and it eventually broke Parks resolve, resulting in Nancy Timms tapping in from close range after another good team move, with some fast, accurate passing from Bebe-Rose Gault, Lottie Vavasour and Evalyn Hunt. Final score for the A Team - Yarrells (Year 3) 2-1 Park (Year 4) Player of the match (nominated by the opposition) went to Bebe-Rose Gault because of her tackling throughout the match. In the B Team some of the new pupils to Yarrells were playing their first ever fixture. Isla Hope-Collier said that she was very excited, because at her last school they didn't ever play matches against other schools. During the B team matches, the girls showed that their skill levels and game knowledge is improving steadily. On various occasions good control was shown when dribbling or shooting. Stick positioning was the best it has been to date when tackling 1v1. Miss Alford was particularly pleased with Annabel Smith and Emily Jee for their enthusiasm throughout the match. Charlotte Moyes, Charlotte Sandy Rebekah Pritchard and Izzy Shrimpton were a constant threat to the opposition in attacking situations. Jennifer Harries Jones and Milly Gatehouse worked well on remembering to control the ball and pass with accuracy. All of these small elements combined together meant that Yarrells put in a very good performance against girls who were a school year above them. Final result for the B Team - Yarrells (Year3) 2-1 Park (Year 4)

Player of the match went to Charlotte Moyes for her hard work and determination, and for showing good positional awareness and not chasing the ball around. Charlotte was effective when in possession of the ball, setting up both goals. Well done to each and every one of you for today's performances and for your hard work during training. The fixtures between schools is such a vital part of life at Yarrells, as it teaches the children to feel part of a group, all working towards a common goal, helps build good communication skills, it forms leadership, unity, friendship, being respectful of other children, to be magnanimous in victory or gracious in defeat. The children take pride in representing the school as it is lots of fun, but most importantly of all (as I'm told by both sets of teams, every time we have a fixture) is that the children get biscuits at the end! Yarrells Under 11 Football Tournament 2016 Wednesday 12th October On Wednesday 12 th October Yarrells welcomed football teams from Park and St Thomas Garnet to their annual A and B Football Tournaments for an afternoon of competitive but well spirited football in the autumn sunshine. In the A team tournament were a Yarrells Year 6 team and a Yarrells Year 5 team; as well as a Park A team and a St. Thomas Garnet A team. After a fiercely close round robin group stage, Yarrells Year 6 had to beat Yarrells Year 5 to progress into the final against Park. However, the game was a stalemate meaning that the Yarrells Year 5 team faced Park in the final. What followed was a scintillating final, with Park taking the lead early in the first half, and Yarrells equalising with seconds to spare. The game progressed into golden goal with 2 minutes gone, Joe Caton squeezed the ball in from a tight angle making the Yarrells Year 5 team champions! The B team Plate tournament was another tight affair with 3 separate but even Yarrells teams (the reds, the greens and the whites) battling with Park B team for the title. After a close group stage, the final was made up of Park B team who faced the Yarrells whites. After suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in the group stage to Park Bs the whites were hungry for revenge. However, a powerful display from Park meant they came out on top 3-0 winners. Mr Lewis was still bursting with pride at his team s performance and hailed them fantastic. A fabulous afternoon of high quality football meant that players from all teams headed to the courtyard for some delicious tea. Until next year Year 6 Girls Hockey v Park Wednesday 12th October All of the Year 6 girls travelled to Chapel Gate to play against Park. It was the first match the girls have played this term and an opportunity to play on a much bigger pitch than they are used to. The Astro is roughly three times larger, faster rolling and a consistent surface compared to what they train on at school. Yarrells A and B teams both tried hard to exert pressure on Park and play in the attacking third of the pitch. Betsy Vavasour was a constant threat on the Park goal with Park s goalkeeper and defenders clearing the ball off the line on four separate occasions. Eventually through a fine set of passes between Poppy Green, Esme Broadbent-Miles and Betsy resulting in the ball being smashed into the bottom corner of Park s goal. Final score for the A Team was Yarrells 1-0 Park Player of the match was Ellie Roper

In the B team s match Ellie Stevenson performed superbly in goal, showing very quick footwork to save from Parks attackers on several occasions to keep the score level. I was particularly pleased as this is a technique that Eliana Covell, Josie Corn, Claudia Harvey and Ellie (as the schools goalkeepers) have practiced with intensity during goalkeeper training sessions. Lulu Smith, Ella Guy and Elizabeth Leese all tried hard to put early pressure on Park to block the ball higher up the pitch and turn it into an attacking situation for Yarrells. Kira Cook, Matilda Raynor and Lottie Herschend Attwell cleared the ball away from the defensive D time and time again so that Park were left frustrated and unable to score. Final score for the B Team was Yarrells 0-0 Park Player of the match was Matilda Raynor Poole & East Dorset Cross Country League (2 nd round) at Sandbanks Thursday 13 th October 2016 Yarrells had four teams competing from Years 5-8. It was a very tough, leg burning course on the soft sand, some hard packed sand and the promenade. The Year 5 and 6 boys were first to start and the team of Tom Shepherd, Max Phillips, James Bourne and David Sherry were at the head of the race with over 100 participants in that race alone. Tom finished in 4 th place, Max in 15 th, James in 44 th and unfortunately David could not finish as he had breathing difficulties near the halfway point of the race. The Year 5 and 6 girls followed, with Freya Blundell and Ellie Roper working well together pacing each other around with the first 8 athletes near the halfway marker. Freya and Ellie both picked up the pace and overtook several athletes to finish 5 th and 8 th. Grace Crowe and Betsy Vavasour also worked very well together and put in lung busting finishes to place 32 nd and 34 th. In that same race, Mrs Sharpes daughter Kitty ran a superb race and finished in 2 nd position narrowly missing out on first by a few stride lengths. Year 7 girls entered another large field of runners from across the county. This was a tough group to run in as there were many runners who are in the Poole athletics team and compete on a national level. Lauren Corn and Pietra Overton paired up well to work

together taking turns to lead the other as they caught and overtook a former pupil, Ellie Blakeway where Lauren dipped on the line to beat her to the finish, placing 12th, a superb attitude and effort bearing in mind she had just ran the tough 1 mile course. Pietra finished close behind, outpacing another girl to place 17 th with Keirra Wood finishing 32 nd and Freya Tudberry-Swain did very well outpacing several girls who were all contesting to get over the line, with Freya finishing 35 th overall. Last up were the Year 8 boys who were arguably in the hardest race of all as they had some athletes in their category who are part of the Great Britain Biathle team and county athletics champions across varying distances. It was a challenge that the boys took on with the bravado that I have come to expect from them. Fergus Taylor and Eddie Shepherd combined well to really force their pace in the middle sector, passing over a dozen athletes until they were hanging in there towards the end and placed wonderfully, with Eddie 10 th and Fergus 11 th. Alfie Roper also performed extremely well and really showed how much effort he put in for himself and the team, grimacing as he crossed the line in 26 th place, with Lewis Maftah not far behind as he managed to put in a cheeky sprint finish, boosting his finishing place by 4 placings, passing athletes complacently finishing by crossing in 33 rd. I would like to thank all of the children who competed in this event as it was a big leap into the unknown for us all, however we all know what this entails now and will revisit how we train ready to better the performance levels that the team had today. Roll on Canford XC on the 10 th November. The children are looking forward to that as there is no sand! Thank you to all of the wonderful Yarrells parents for their tremendous support as always. Lastly to Mrs Sharpe who took time out from planning for parents evening to come and support me with the organising and logistics of the group. It was a special moment to have her there to be able to see her daughter perform so brilliantly in her category.
