3 Big Summer Read 2018 Sea to Shore Ahoy there Welcome to the Big Summer Read 2018 Libraries NI is delighted to present the Big Summer Read 2018, the annual children s reading event for everyone aged 15 years and under. During July and August there will be a programme of events and fun activities in libraries across Northern Ireland highlighting all aspects of coastal life. With such a vast and varied programme there will be something for all ages. Events will include fascinating talks and workshops promoting stories about our rugged coastline, the launch of the beautiful new picture book Molly and the Stormy Sea by Malachy Doyle illustrated by Andrew Whitson, safety at sea talks by the RNLI, storytelling and craft sessions and much more. If you are a Libraries NI member why not enter the Great Lighthouses of Ireland colouring competition to win a family break at one of the lightkeepers cottages at St John s Point Lighthouse in County Down? You can also complete the Lighthouse Quiz to get free child entry to Rathlin West Light, County Antrim, Fanad Head Lighthouse, County Donegal or Valentia Island Lighthouse, County Kerry. By taking part in the Big Summer Read, children will be entered into a free draw for a family pass to either the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum or the Ulster American Folk Park. 5 Great Lighthouse Competition WIN A FREE FAMILY BREAK St John s Point Lighthouse, County Down Take part in a coastal colouring competition to win a free family break at one of the lightkeepers cottages at St John s Point Lighthouse, County Down. Entrants must be children who are Libraries NI members and who are taking part in the Libraries NI Big Summer Read This amazing prize is for two adults and two children for two nights and is subject to availability at the time of booking (excludes bank holidays). 6 Have you ever visited a lighthouse? FREE CHILD ENTRY Lighthouses have acted as beacons of light for hundreds of years, guiding sailors and fishermen along our rocky coastline. All children who complete the Great Lighthouse Quiz will get free entry to one of the lighthouses below when accompanied by one fee paying adult (one child per paying adult). Rathlin West Light, County Antrim Fanad Head, County Donegal Valentia Island, County Kerry All you have to do is answer 10 easy questions, get your quiz sheet stamped at your local library or mobile library and you re on your way. 7 The Shining Light, Ships and Slipways Storytelling Tour BOOK A FREE TOUR Saturday 18 August from 11:00am to 4:00pm Join us for an interactive family friendly storytelling tour, where guests will visit SS Nomadic, the last remaining White Star Line ship in the world. Venture then on foot down the Titanic slipways where the world s most famous ship was built and launched, to the Great Light, one of the largest lighthouse optics of its kind ever built in the world. The storytelling tour will then bring everyone for refreshments and a short tour on board HMS Caroline, a unique survivor of the Battle of Jutland during the First World War. You will also be transported from HMS Caroline in style on board the Wee Tram, which is based on the tram cars that ran through the shipyard in Titanic s day. This is a unique opportunity for Big Summer Read participants and their families to spend time exploring Titanic Quarter and listening to stories of our industrial giants. Discover how these Giants have played a huge role in TQ s maritime history, and the one thing that links them all. 8 National Museums NI WIN A GREAT FAMILY DAY OUT Be in with a chance to win a great family day out. National Museums NI has partnered with Libraries NI on this year s Big Summer Read. Museums are all about storytelling where children can stretch their imagination and be transported to another world.
