2 IXL FRU IT IN NECTAR ' Another North-St. Bernard's Grand Final The only thing closer to fresh fruit 'XL CONSERVES IN GLASS Page 2 is fresh fruit. Real Fruit Preserves THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - SEPTEMBER 18, 1976 I "DE LA'S" LATE BID JUST FAILS MARCELLIN MAKE By GEORGE McTAGGART IT TO TOP GRADE It's another North Old Boys-St. Bernard's Grand Final today! St. Bernard's held on just long enough to stop De La Salle's bid for victory in last Saturday's Final, and got home by two points. Marcellin won their way into the B Section Grand Final, and A Section in 1977, with a comfortable win over Old Scotch. They meet Caulfield Grammarians in the Grand Final. St. Bernard's opened up a 34- point lead in the first quarter with the wind and could have been further in front but for hurried, inaccurate shooting for goal. De La Salle steadily overhauled their opponents in the second term and their more accurate attack took them to the front shortly before the interval only to see St. Bernard's goal and level the scores. As in their previous meeting, "De La" held St. Bernard's well in the third quarter, Saints scoring only two goals from nine shots, and "De La" looked to have a slight edge when they trailed by two goals at the last change. But St. Bernard's put on the pressure early in the final term and added two valuable goals to increase their lead to 25 points nearing the halfway mark. They looked safe at this stage, but two quick goals spurred De La Salle on and they fought their way to within two points at the final siren. However, the goal that cut their deficit to two points was scored so close to the finish that there was only time for the bounce in the centre before the siren sounded. The Marcellin-Old Scotch game was even for the first half, but Marcellin broke away in the third quarter and their greater experience enabled them to go on to win by 34 points. Old Melburnians gained an early break on Old Haileybury and scored a comfortable win while Old Xaverians opened up a big lead over AJAX in the first half, and although AJAX finished well, Xav's won by 40 points. LaTrobe Blacks were not greatly troubled by St. Kevin's and West Brunswick overwhelmed Beverley Hills to go through the season undefeated. In the Junior Section, North Old Boys won easily from Monash University, their remarkably accurate kicking (16-3) being a big factor, but Thomastown scraped home by only a point from St. Bernard's, the winning point being scored just three minutes before the finish. 3 UMPIRE 'S By KEVIN McKAy "WHY BE A COACH?" CORNER That question is asked of every mentor many times during his career. Why put up with the frustrations, the petty arguments - the jealousies - and I suppose every coach has a different answer. Last week no less than 7 different people asked me the same question - "Why do you do it?" Coaches in any sport do it for many reasons, I guess I have a couple of my own. The feeling of puttin g something back into the Association from which I gained so much - the tremendous respect I have for our umpires - the tpopasine A of seseein an umpire t g ction" the feeling the achievement - I guess these are the things why most of us coach. The arguments - the jealousy, are all forgotten - but the boy you have coached remains your friend for life. The athlete you took out of the paddocks 15 years ago and trained to win a gift rings on the phone, just to say "hello", the boy who never made it to "A" Section sends a birthday card each year, - these are the real reasons I coach. A coach must be completely dedicated to his task - completely loyal to those under his care - athlete - upire, or must play th py eline straight: heblack lack and g is mwhit e down white, there is no is room for a shade of grey in a mentor's make-up. He must be firm, but also helpful - never a show of bad temper, and available at all times to listen to the problems of those in his care, whether that problem be one of his sport or of a personal nature. He must never betray a con told to him. fidence A truly dedicated coach will fight with everything at his disposal to protect "his boys" - to see that all are given opportunities equal to their ability -- he cannot play favourites. coach lshas reall y for those he trains eelingit a hard to explain - if the umpire or athlete is hurt, the coach feels i t It with gruelling mil e m the they umpire nis he feels? the coach feels that abuse The emotion the coach pis t not allowedothat.l pleasure, his nerves, his feelings must remain "ice cold" until the race is run, until the final siren of the game, and only then can he release his pent-up emotions - his feeling of joy for the protege he has coached. A true mentor does not seek personal kudos - his full satisfaction is gained from the pleasure on the face of "the boy who has made it to the top. " Coaching is not easy - many think it is simply going out and saying "run 6 miles or do 20 sprints". how to is so, men a coach fit and keep them that way, he must have them at their "peak" for the "big event" - know when and how to give specialised work - stamina, - sprints or distance - when to ease them up, he must be able to read every athlete - and he most certainly must be a confidence booster. He must be prepared to "stick up" for his principles. No doubt today someone will again ask "why do you do it?" Perhaps "I just love it". As I average over 20 hours per week - 48 weeks of every year in coaching, that is probably the answer. To all of our umpires of 1976, on behalf of John Posetti and myself, thank you for your fine effo rts on the field and for making our season such a one. pleasant We wish you and your families a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Interstate player with V.A.F.A. 1964, 1965, Wakefield St., Hawthorn, Vic Phone ( Business) ( Private) PREVIEWING TODAY'S A SECTIO N Well, St. Bernard's made It to the Grand Final, by the skin of their teeth, and put themselves into this position by atrocious shooting for goal. However, this problem is under controi. At my suggestion Gus Mitchell is ordering all players to attend their Grand Final Champagne Breakfast, confident in the fact that a few glasses of "bubbly" will rectify the problem. Having got rid of St. Bernard's main problem, let's get on with mine. Which team to go for, in the on e big game that matters, when for the whole season, I have had it clearly in my mind that North Old Boy's and GAMES St. Bernard's were in a class on their own. Having a great regard for the depth of talent, dedication and leadership of the two clubs, I now find it difficult to separate them. On paper, St. Bernard's can boast a greater number of players who have made excellent reputations for themselves in Amateur ranks, and the majority are in good form at the moment. To combat this advantage, the North ruck pack looks better served for marking stren g th in dry conditions, and there is an abundance of pace around the flanks. With so little to choose between these two top notch sides, I'm going for No rth Old Boy's and keeping my fi ngers crossed for good conditions, well aware that St. Bernard's proved themselves in the heavy going last week. The little breaks are going to be very important to both teams, and I anticipate a game worth going a long way to see. The loser is going to be the one that luck goes against. Maybe it's the Royal Purples' turn for a pennant anyhow. - ALF KEAM. B SECTION The B Section Grand Final brings together two teams who in the past two weeks have entertained spectators at Coliingwood with exhibitions of fast, creative football. Either side is capable of winning today as a result of a devastating burst of football. Marcellin, who joined the V.A.F.A. in 1971 seek their third flag today. In this time they have won four flags including that of 1970 in A section. After two seasons in B section the Grammarians return to "A" hoping to recapture the glory they enjoyed in the early 1970s. To endeavour to select today's winner I am indebted to John Byrne's dossier and Syd Whitfield's sagacity. The ruck duels, as always, may decide the result. Griffiths and Morphet will do battle with Power, Price and Currucan. Michael Power has often impressed me with his clever play. Should Morphet be still carrying an injury his effectiveness must be impaired. Griffiths must be similarly considered. The roving duels may therefore favour Aloisio rather than Malfroy. Marcellin's goal to goal line is a strength. However Caulfield's forward line will test the Marcellin defence. In the second semi-final Tootell with his strength and experience proved a thorn in the Old Scotch side. Buchanan lifted his game when he was really needed. Atchison and Macdonald are other players Marcellin need to watch. To multiply Ray Walsh's problems Fletcher and executive forward Butcher, if they are fit, will strengthen Caulfield. In the centre the clash of Lester, the B Section Best and Fairest player with Mahon of Marcellin will be another factor of vital importance in the outcome. The wingers appear evenly matched on paper. A winning centre line is essential in finals. So the side to gain the break here may well become premiers. Caulfield's great half back line Clark, Long and Watson will prove troublesome to Marcellin. Cullinan at centre half forward is a great winner of the ball. However, last week in the wet his strength also proved helpful. "Noddy" Gartner on a flank is another Marcellin veteran who has impressed over the years. Today without the worry of impending fatherhood he should do even better than last week. An interesting sub plot today i s whether Jones can score goal number 100. Fox or Middleton will have the unenviable task of stopping this teenage goalsneak. Their main hope will be aid from a winning half back line. Caulfield are the stronger and more experienced side. They watched last Saturday while Marcellin slogged in the mud. The extra time will have helped heal their injuries. It is my belief that Caulfield will be able to halt the accurate Marcelli n handball and convert sufficient opportunities to emerge as B Section Premiers for season NORM NUGENT - John Byrne is away.
