STUDENT WORKSHEET 1.1A And the Fairest is Scenario Data: Background for Students SCENARIO 1 The Training Session The team captain, Michael, decides to take a short cut on the footy training cross-country run. Instead of completing the full circuit like the rest of his teammates, he has ducked through some trees and across the course, so that he doesn t have to run as far as the others. One of his teammates, Tien, has found out about his action and told the coach about it. The coach is disappointed with Michael s actions. The coach knows he is going to have to discipline the team captain. SCENARIO 2 The Great Hot Dog Fiasco Mr and Mrs Nguyen have taken their children, Tuan and Linh, and Linh s friends Joanna and Angelo to the MCG to watch the footy. At half-time they give Linh, Joanna and Angelo $20 to buy some food for themselves and Tuan. After making a few purchases the children decide not to give the change back to Linh s parents. Linh tells her mum and dad that she must have lost it on the way back to their seats. SCENARIO 3 The Broken Vase Simone, Abdul, Toan and Stephanie were playing footy in the lounge room at Simone s house. Simone knew that they shouldn t be playing with the ball inside, but she was having too much fun with her friends from school. As she lined up to take a shot at goal, the ball slipped off the side of her foot and smashed her mother s favourite glass vase! Simone and her friends try to repair the vase and pretend that they didn t break it. SCENARIO 4 The Pie Stain Ralph s 10th birthday was three days away and he couldn t wait to open his presents. His mum Lillian had bought him something he always wanted - a new Western Bulldogs jumper. The problem was that the big game at school was on today and Ralph was desperate to dress to impress. He asked his brother Dominic to cover for him while he carefully unwrapped the jumper. He put it on and wore it to school without his mum knowing. After the game, knowing that it was his birthday present, Ralph s best friend George mashed some pie into his jumper as a joke. Ralph was frantic. He ran home and carefully wrapped the jumper in gift paper once again and placed it back where he found it. He hoped that his mum wouldn t notice. Page 1 of 5
SCENARIO 5 The Footy Boot Prank STUDENT WORKSHEET 1.1A And the Fairest is Scenario Data: Background for Students The day had arrived. Tom and his AFL Auskick friends were going to play on the MCG for the first time. Before the game Josie, Tina and Angelo decided to play a practical joke on Tom and hide his boots in the team bus. In the change room Tom discovers that his boots are missing and becomes frantic. He was suspicious that some of his friends had a part to play in their disappearance but didn t want to accuse anyone without proof. His teacher Mr Boyle and friends, including Josie and Tina, start a search but find nothing. Angelo, feeling bad, runs back to the bus but realises it has left for the depot. It s time to run out on to the ground but without his boots Tom can t play. He misses the biggest moment in his life. SCENARIO 6 Out of Bounds Year 6 students Joey and Gary were kicking the football on the back oval at lunch. They had been warned by yard duty teacher Mr Briggs not to play too close to the workman s shed as it was strictly an out of bounds area. It didn t take long though for Gary to launch one of his torpedo punt kicks over Joey s head and into the shed. Joey panicked. It was his big brother s new football and he didn t have permission to take it to school. They knew about not being allowed in the out of bounds area but they had to get the ball. To avoid getting into trouble they called over Nicky, a younger Year 3 student, and asked him to get the ball for them. When they noticed that Mr Briggs saw that Nicky had gone into the shed Gary and Joey raced away from the scene. Nicky was left to take the blame with Mr Briggs on his own. Page 2 of 5
And the Fairest is Scenario Data: Stimulus Questions SCENARIO 1: THE TRAINING SESSION What do you think the consequences should be? Was Tien right to tell the coach about what Michael had done? Was the coach right to be upset? How can Michael try to redeem himself as a leader in the team? Who is responsible for the tension in the team? SCENARIO 2: THE GREAT HOT DOG FIASCO Why do you think Linh really kept the money? Why don t her friends stop her? Why are Linh s parents so suspicious? What does Angelo really think about the situation? Are Linh s actions and her attitude something to worry about? Page 3 of 5
And the Fairest is Scenario Data: Stimulus Questions SCENARIO 3: THE BROKEN VASE Who do you think acts most responsibly? What would you do if you were Simone? What does being responsible mean? Who is the true friend in the group? Who is at fault? What do you think should happen? SCENARIO 4: THE PIE STAIN questions, such as those below and others you think relevant, to determine if their explanations for their behaviour are satisfactory. Why was Ralph so desperate to dress to impress? Did Dominic do anything wrong? Did Ralph deserve what George had done to his jumper? What would Ralph s mum Lillian think if she knew what had happened? Is the most important thing for Ralph not to get caught? Page 4 of 5
And the Fairest is Scenario Data: Stimulus Questions SCENARIO 5: THE FOOTY BOOT PRANK Your job, as a class, is to question the characters and get them to explain their actions. Ask pertinent questions, such as those below and others you think are relevant, to determine if their explanations Why does Angelo feel so bad? Should he be excluded from any blame because he feels bad? Was Josie, Tina and Angelo s prank funny? Why was this game so important to Tom? Will he get another chance? Was Tom right not to accuse anyone for hiding his boots? If Angelo felt so bad why didn t he tell Tom what had happened? SCENARIO 6: OUT OF BOUNDS Your job, as a class, is to question the characters and get them to explain their actions. Ask pertinent questions, such as those below and others you think are relevant, to determine if their explanations Why was the workman s shed an out of bounds area? Should Nicky take any of the blame? When did the problems start for Joey and Gary? Should Nicky tell Mr Briggs about Gary and Joey? What would you have done when the ball went into the out of bounds area? Page 5 of 5
